Quicksand (2019)

Starts ok and becomes unbearable
2 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
As the series progressed, I lost all the empathy for the lead - It was unclear to me why she chooses to stick around this douche, drug addict, abusive boyfriend, unless it's for his money. She kept making morally bad decisions then complained about the consequences. She showed no signs of remorse and that basically makes her a psychopath.

For most of the series her defense attorney did a horrible job defending her- all he did was to explain to her the procedures and nothing else.

Apart from that - all the parents in the series are superficial, lack values and parenting skills. Quite unbearable.

Had potential but!
23 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I liked the light tone of the film, good actors and I think it had potential. Unfortunately too many issues and holes in the story left it less than mediocre:

First, the movie presumes to portray real life, so how come we don't know anything about the guy except for his relationship issues - he never works, has no friends (except for an ex), and struggles with nothing apart from his ability to stay in a relationship. As for her - unless she's super rich (and it doesn't look like she is) it's pretty difficult to be divorced and raise two small children in NYC, yet that's not a consideration in her conflict as to whether or not to keep the baby after getting accidentally pregnant from a guy she barely knows.

Second, a grown woman with two kids should recognize this type of selfish and childish douche who runs away when things get heavy at a much earlier stage - all the warning lights are there! But instead, she behaves like an teenager and flows with this relationship until the inevitable end.

Third- in what world, a divorced woman who already has two small kids, is seriously thinking about keeping a baby from a man she had one blind date with that ended in bed? Again, cost of raising a baby along with the huge responsibility are not even a consideration.

Fourth - the political issue around abortions is forced into the script and doesn't seem to belong there at all.

Fifth- all in all, I don't see the point in this film. Neither of the leads went through something that changed them by even a little or have new perspective. It's the same old story about a woman getting into a relationship with the wrong guy and we know how this ends. It's too weird that she wants to keep his baby.

A pity since the actors are really good and the tone was realistic & light. Could have been way better.

Docuseries
18 August 2018
It's an interesting documentary but horrible as a drama series. I don't know why they categorize it under drama - it's a narrated docuseries like they do in History channel. This is not what I expect in a dramatic storytelling. In fact, it's completely undramaric - no conflict, no rounded characters. They tell you everything (in a very annoying narration btw) instead of showing them through the human story. I gave it 5 because it's a decent documentary. That's it !

Spotlight (I) (2015)

boring movie
25 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
As a screenwriter this movie really upset me - a bunch of journalists expose a case, where hundreds of children have been molested by priests, and covered up by the church. How do the journalists expose it? they call up a bunch of guys who said it before, but nobody listened to them. No doubt it's an important story, however I didn't detect any brilliant journalism - this is not All the President's Men, nor is it The Verdict where Paul Newman battled against the church. Spotlight reporters never stray in the dark or risk anything - the story is basically handed to them on a silver platter, and they only verify it. Drama? hell with it. worst of all - No brilliant cinema, no actions, just dialogue about this and that, we hardly get to know the characters outside of work, so we don't care about them. Bottom line is that this horrible case leaves hardly any impact. By the end of the movie you just realize that there have been pedophile priests. Didn't we already know this? No climax, no anticlimax, no heroes to root for. Hell I don't understand the raving reviews.

A pompous sham!
15 February 2016
I really expected this one! I have only seen the pilot, but so far it's more of an exposition (drama, anyone?) to a mafia movie rather than a bigger than life story about the music scene in the 70's or a story at all. Not that I have anything against mob movies, but this mishmash definitely ain't the Godfather. The characters- I couldn't care much about any of them. It felt that none (including the lead) were really passionate or had any heart in them at all. it was all too cold and functional. Many of the characters had very little to byte on, were not iconic in any way, and simply boring (take a lesson from the creators of Suits and Mad Men!). Maybe if Ray Romano were the lead, he would bring the required charm and lightness into the role, alas there was too little of him. The story/expo (which was difficult to follow because it wasn't so interesting) is mainly plot driven rather than character driven, and I think that that's the main fault of the script. I am not even mentioning the number of times they name dropped famous leads & bands & Warhol was just ridiculous instead of being a humorous add-on.
