Black Mirror: Beyond the Sea (2023)
Why do we have to go to the 60s for?
I mean the story was better than the others and there were a lot of good plotlines too. I am pointing out my main issue.
I am kind of sick of stories based in history to establish a traditional relationship model. "You have to get those roles based on their timeline" are sentences I get from that. But there is no motivation why it is set in the 60s than fighting like strong men over a women, which is so dumb. Violence against the kid does nothing for the plot.
Script using violence against women and kids as probs again. Even if Kata Mara's character had some moments of self-determination it was always Cliffs decision. All in all all the women are possessions of the protagonists.
I give you a different storyline also Set in the 60s but makes sense:
What about having a women and men in space. Women's Family is killed in the same way. Woman becomes friends with Lana, Lana falls in love with spacewomen and hides it from Cliff. Kid notices the two kissing. Father finds out due to the kid.
Different endings:
* Cliff dies in space: women running off together and meet 4 years later in person (or both are imprisoned afterwards)
* Replica dies: Lana is waiting 4 years to meet the spacewomen
* Spacewomen kills Cliff
* Cliff kills own family.
Die Fremde (2010)
A beautifully underestimated independent movie
I don't really know why this movie is so underrated.
It is, as i know, the first feature film of the director. And the struggle to choose between your family and society is real. Not only in Turkish families, not in every family but in some for sure. Murder because of honer still exists. Murder because of different pictures of society still exists. And also it's a movie. I think it is really realistic but if you don't remind yourself of every Hollywood romance film existing. Yeah very realistic stuff..
I also don't get in what way this is racist. It is a story of a family not every family. This movie is a great example of using a different language than English or German and the cast is actually Turkish. It celebrates diversity in movies.
There are many many other films which portray Turkish people in a more ghetto and criminal style but this film is about relationships and the problem of honor and empowerment in a society.
The camera-work is beautiful. You feel like being sucked in that isolated world of the family. The dialog is beautiful written.
I just love that film and i would recommend watching it.
