12 Years a Slave (2013)
excellent
I am a southerner and when I watch movies depicting slavery, I am usually suspect. Most films depict Southern plantation owners as evil, cruel, despicable individuals. What I liked about the film, was the fact that it showed the political insanity of slavery, and those who owned slaves as the people they were. Some evil, some defective and some indifferent, and some, just trying to run a business. Notwithstanding the evils of slavery, in some cases the owners knew the horrors of slavery, yet the system was set up by a national government indifferent to the horrors of such evilness. How the lead actor Chiwetel Ejiofore did not receive the academy award, shocks me. The entire movie showed a character who persevered in circumstances inconceivable to most. The story line was straightforward, and since I will not write a spoiler, I am happy to say that the facts of the story appear to be told without undue political banter. I think it is the best movie ever made, and God knows I think Matt McConeghy is adorable, and Dallas Buyers club outstanding, it was a tie for Best Actor in my mind. If you have any time, read the book, 12 Years a Slave. This is a part of history that should never be forgotten, and hopefully all will gain insight of the complications and absurdity of slavery in the 1800's.
Gravity (2013)
Very Suspenseful
At first during the beginning of the film, I was a bit disappointed with the character, Ryan for seeming to be so helpless. As the film progressed there were some intense moments, and truly interesting character development. The graphics appeared realistic to a certain extent, kind of like what you see on public TV space programs. There are excellent moments in the film where the characters show real human emotions, and a bit of a surprise at one point. I think the ending was excellent, but lacking a bit. (No spoilers here). It gives you great pauses to the intensity of the space explorers and scientists, and shows a side that is not always seen. I was not happy with the sound track as I had to turn the volume way up to get a clear soundtrack. Sandra Bullock shows a new side to her acting dimension. George Clooney was cast as usual, but his character was serious and direct. I would recommend the movie.
Adrift in Manhattan (2007)
Great characters finding their way-- Warning spoiler
Enjoyed the film very much. The three main characters each have issues to deal with and are a bit trapped in themselves. The young man is so inhibited, you can practically feel the pressure in him about to explode. The old man is facing new horizons and is afraid of what that will bring. And the doctor is consumed with grief. The way the movie threads the lives of these 3 ordinary characters is done beautifully. Without knowing each characters intentions we see how our actions, great or small, affect others. My only complaint is it took a while to figure out what problem the Doctor was having, and there was not much information provided as to how the child died. As to the old man, the scene where he is drawing is incredible. His story unfolds quickly and the woman he works with does a great job in reaching out to him. The young man is a more complicated story. There is little to go on in trying to figure him out. His mother is overbearing, and a little "too close" to him. Yet, that is about all we can tell, except that he likes to take pictures. His inability to communicate clearly with anyone creates an enormous amount of tension, and the sex scene with him and the Doctor finally breaks down his wall. Beautifully produced. Would recommend. On a purely technical note, I occasionally found the sound track not consistent, and would have to raise and lower the volume on the remote. ( This could be due to my TV or the actual copy that Hulu is transmitting).
