Great setting and story, lackluster performance and realization
26 October 2023
"Bonn" is a miniseries playing in germany a decade after the end of world war 2. It focuses on the conflict between the Verfassungsschutz which is hunting and prosecting former Nazi officials and the Organisation Gehlen which was the predecessor of today's BND (the german foreign intelligence agency) and is more sympathetic and supportive towards former Nazis, enabling their escape from prosecution. The outcome of that conflict might determine the future of the very young west germany which is now linked with western allies to prepare for a possible new war with the USSR.

The series does a great job at portraying the life of a young woman that is being recruited as a spy for the Verfassungsschutz, conflicting with her father's Nazi background.

The story plays out well and both the set design as well as the locations give off a very post-war feeling.

Unfortunately the realization breaks the immersion and the tension in many places. While most actors and actresses do a good job, some roles (Toni's boyfriend played by Julius Feldmeier) made me feel like watching a school play.

Many scenes also have a german voice-over despite the characters speaking german and it's not lip synched at ALL (the scene in the bar/club in one of the later episodes...) and it's a prime example where small, really weak moments ruin the whole show.

The story is still very exciting, especially since the audience knows from the beginning that it's based on real history. However, it's painfully badly done in some parts which really removed most of the fascination that I had in the beginning. A real shame.

Only Murders in the Building: Ghost Light (2023)
Season 3, Episode 6
3/10
This season is not heading anywhere
10 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is just filler material and it's really getting boring after the last episodes also didn't do much for the plot.

What's the point having of Steve Martin lock himself in that maintenance room? Horribly boring, adds nothing to the plot and also doesn't work at all joke-wise.

Meryl Streep's character is also boring and their dating-life does not interest me at all, it's just irrelevant. Yes, it's hinted that she committed the murder, but the current main suspect changes in every episode and there's a couple of episodes left. Then it's just tiring watching them chase an obvious dead end.

This show really took a nosedive after season 2, season 3 is just not exciting at all.

Infuriatingly stupid script, so much wasted potential
17 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I finished season one and gave myself 2 weeks of calming down before writing this. I will avoid season 2 like the plague.

The show starts of rather well with an interesting setting of rich & poor and the usual problems that a group of teenagers have. Also the location is interesting to watch as the island has just been ravaged by a storm. This not only kicks off the story as a body and a wreck is discovered but also conveniently cuts off all cell phone signals so that stupid things can now happen all the time because people don't communicate properly now, even when they talk to each other in person for some reason. If you haven't guessed it by now: this show has many elements of the famous "idiot plot" concept where many of the problems and conflicts would never happen if the characters just made some minimally smarter decisions. At the beginning this might just be a little annoying but this is a constant theme of this show and the pure stupidity is an essential driver of the plot at some point. I literally screamed at the TV while watching it.

Spoilers ahead!

  • JJ just brings the gun wherever he goes and the group hates him for it. Yet: nobody really cares, this just goes on.

  • The rich kids have all the money in the world, but when it comes to owing money to the drugdealer, they don't have any.

  • Sure, Topper is an arrogant rich kid at the start, but he certainly cares for Sarah and then gets cheated on and understandably demands some explanation. Yet he is portrayed as being a raging maniac that you're not supposed to like or even understand.

  • The whole thing about Pope and his scholarship. I mean... wow. Stop disappoint your parents all the whole time and do something useful for once. Isn't he supposed to be the smart one?

  • JJ is just an annoying guy that nobody would hang out with in real life. He attempts to redeem himself by taking the blame for Popes (utterly useless!) ship-sinking nonsense, but as soon as Pope ruins the scholarship interview, JJ is that idiot again by talking him into smoking weed.

  • After Peterkin is shot, John B tries to turn himself in and then is super surprised that the bad guys framed him. Why?!?

  • When Ward accidentally kills Big John on the ship, he keeps insisting it was an accident, even though he admits throwing he body overboard. That makes it the exact opposite of an accident. The show continues to portray him as a loving father and totally nice guy for some reason. He is also totally fine with his son shooting the Sherrif.

  • Wards tells Grubbs about the "accident" with Big John, who in turn tells his wife and that Big John died on that island. Mrs Grubbs then tells John B something like "I know things, but I will not yet tell you", then in episode 8 she's like "oh right John B, glad you're here, now I can finally tell you about your father!" God, I hate lazy writing.

  • Evading capture on a small island where everybody knows everyone and whole crowds are looking for you is surprisingly easy, but who cares at this point.

  • the fight scene at the outside-movie-night-cinema thing was beyond stupid. Of course only that fire could've stopped the fight, not stepping slightly to the side so that the crowd notices.

  • the whole plot about the gold might be interesting in the beginning, because the poor kids have a real and legitimate way of getting rich because if they found it in the wreck, it would be theirs. Turns out the gold was on the island and thus belongs to that old lady. Ward buys the place. That makes the gold legally his and thus our protagonists are thiefs with 0 justification for claiming the gold for them. And why? Because they were stupid and Ward wasn't. It's impossible to still root for them after all these bad decisions.

There's several more things to list here but I have already deleted them from memory to avoid the pain.

One more thing that breaks the immersion of the show is the age of the actors. They mention that they are about 16, yet the actors are all at least 25. That's a very obvious difference at that age.

This show deserves a 1/10 because instead of entertainment, you get frustration. But there are 2 points I want to highlight, thus 3/10:
  • production value is really good. The scenery is beautifully shot and the portrayal of hotness and humidity is rather immersive. After the first episode, I really thought this might be a great show because of the good introduction and all the potential of the story.

  • the subplot of John B and Sarah going to the mainland was rather enjoyable and you could actually feel some chemistry between them. One of the few convincing parts of the show.

Having said all that about season 1, there are already many reviews that say "season 2 gets really annoying". So you mean this even gets worse!? Kudos to anyone who sits through that, I will not.

Scary Movie V (2013)
3/10
A disappointment.
30 July 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I am a huge fan of the Scary Movie series. I always liked parts 3 and 4 better than 1 and 2, but that's my opinion. And I've seen all of them at least 5 times each.

What part 5 did wrong? There are a couple of things, and all of those weren't nearly as bad in the previous Scary Movies.

The plot is basically non-existent. It vaguely describes the things that are happening in Mama and all the other spoofs (like the Black Swan side plot) don't feel like they are embedded into the main storyline at all.

Of course the plot lines weren't the main focus of all scary movies, but this one doesn't even try. Suddenly, there's Katt Williams appearing to attempt some sort of exorcism and disappears after 3 awkward minutes, leaving nobody laughing and everyone asking what the hell that was about. At another point, the pool-cleaning robots are having a pool party. Which is a totally unfunny idea in the first place, but they just went along with it and stretch that "joke" to over 2 minutes, making you look at your watch or cellphone or anything else, really.

The only thing that saves the movie are some really good jokes here and there. But they are very rare and really not worth to sit through this ordeal. The only thing that could have made this worse is a dancing scene (Yes, Disaster Movie and Meet The Spartans, I'm looking at you) or a Michael Jackson joke.

..and how useless was that 50 Shades Of Grey spoof? At least they cut ca. 80% of it out of the final movie, which becomes obvious when they show so many parts of it during the credits.
