Samaritan (2022)
Stayed for Stallone
Has this been the best movie i have ever seen? I have to say its not. Nor is it the best superhero movie i have ever seen.
Throughout the movie it was never great nor was it ever terrible. The story was captavating enough, but barely. The cast wasnt very enjoyable part from one exception. Luckily that was the lead for me.
Stallone has years and years of experience under his belt and that saved this movie for me.
It could have been a lot better in most areas. And i will not delve into such. Just watch this if your a Stallone fan or if your really into superhero movies and you can temper your expectations.
Overall it did what it had to do and that was to entertain. It wont be for everyone, but everyone has seen a lot worse. Give it a fair shot and you might not be dissapointed.
Curious to see what a better script and a bigger budget can do with this story. Just dont leave out Stallone. Its his shoulders carrying this move.
Hellraiser: Judgment (2018)
Those last 20 minutes!
Seen every movie in this franchise, my fun ended with the third part for obvious reasons. With every following sequal i had my hopes up, just to be dissapointed again and again.
When i saw this trailer my hope started to flicker again. The trailer was what i was hoping for. So i started watching this one while being curious and eager.
The bottomline is that this is not the entry we hope it is. But it isnt as bad as some of the entries either. Basiclly its those last 20 minutes you want and for that youll have to go through 60 minutes of scenes full with nonsense, boring set pieces and a lot of typing. If you find yourself at the end of that boring, long road youll get to experience just a little of the old vibe. And although not the strongest bits in the series, satisfying nonetheless.
The end creates chances for another weak entry or even a reboot. All in all i would hope they would for once invested a big budget in this franchise. All those little snacks here and there doesnt make for the meal we are so hungry for.
Batman and Harley Quinn (2017)
Unexpected greatness
Let me start off saying that i usually don't enjoy DC's animated adventures all that much. Most of the time i consider them watered down versions of stories that were magnificent while they where in the comics.
But this little gem follows its own path. A refreshing story that is brought with much love and attention. I cant give out to much without spoiling but this is by far the most hilarious as well as most mature story coming from DC Animated so far!
It even made me like Harley Quinn, something Suicide Squad even couldn't manage.
Boyka: Undisputed IV (2016)
Not as great as part 2 or 3
This movie was on my wishlist for many years. After seeing part 2 and 3 all i could hope for was a load of more movies about Boyka. Unfortuatly this movie got pushed back and back and back. That alone was frustrating as hell. Especially since a lot of people got to see it way before release. Unfortuatly the quality of this one wasn't worth the long wait. I wanted it to be but.. it didn't. If i had to order the Undisputed movies from worst to best... this would follow the first one.
SPOILERS
The first thing that disappointed me was the focus on Boyka being a good guy a whole lot more which didn't worked for the character. Boyka is and should be an anti-hero not a good guy overall. They gave him way to many lines and as a result the character looses most of his charm.
The fights are shorter then we are used to from this series but overall its still one of the bests. Scott is a very talented and gifted person and that will always give any movie a few extra points. His posture as well as his expressions are also his main selling points. But with weaker stories its best not to go to heavily in explaining or talking. It just breaks the flow.
I know most of the people from part 2 and 3 didn't do what they did back then...but i do hope they will for another sequel. Boyka deserves so much more then this.
What this movie did was just re-watching the others for me. It wasn't a centerpiece but i still believe there is so much more to go with. Its not hard coming up with a good story for Boyka, as long as the character is treated as he is.
Luke Cage (2016)
Not everyone's taste
I love superheroes. Been reading and watching them for years and hopefully i will do so for many more to come.
Luke Cage is a success obviously. And i can see why that is. He's a likable hero. The character has been in continuity for decades and even without all that... it can ride on the success of Daredevil and others.
Where it dropped the ball for me personally was the fact its to fixed on its American public. A lot of the slang isn't understandable for someone like me that's from Europe. I watch a lot of movie's so my knowledge of the language isn't the problem but.. Yes, it lacks in that department. The story is interesting and the shots are beautifully made and in that area it can go toe to toe with a lot of movies.
Luke deserves the love and attention. I just wish they made him more internationally understandable. Still... for most this is a great show to watch,
Arrival (2016)
Weird but interesting
I never had more trouble rating a movie as i had with this one. The actors did a great job with it and the filming and effects were very interesting. The part that makes it troublesome is the plot.
Although there are very interesting elements to it, it's also confusing. Especially the end. This is not a movie you watch once and completely understand. But it is entertaining.
Twelve alien spacecrafts arrive on Earth and experts are called in to make contact. The two experts on which the story focuses are interesting. Their path to understanding the aliens keeps you watching while at the same time you cant help feeling some parts are missing. Some times the story advances too far ahead which is a shame. It wouldn't hurt the movie if there was a bit more material.
All in all, this is a decent enough movie to watch. But it wont be everyone's taste.
Why Him? (2016)
Ultimate Feel-Good Experience
For the record.. I'm usually not a fan of Mr Franco's work or off that of his friends. That being said.. back to this movie.
Usually a movie has to hit a sweet spot for me even trying to wrap my thoughts about it, let alone bother to review it. When i saw the trailer i thought.. that's it. The movie will only go downhill from here on out. But it didn't. It didn't brought unexpected surprises, well not many but it did what it promised: make you laugh and really feel good at the end of it. And when a movie makes up on its promises, then i feel its done its job. The grand moments, you've MOSTLY seen in the trailer, but there is still a lot that wasn't shown. Also the story line was still for most parts refreshing which was also a pleasant treat. Every cast member seemed to have fun with their role and the plot and that clearly shows. You also get some great cameo's who i wont spoil.
So if you enjoy a funny movie that hits the sweet spots, then this one is for you. Don't believe all the hate posts. Be your own person and watch this with an open mind. You wont be disappointed,
Let Us Prey (2014)
Slow starter, great finisher
I don't review a lot of movies. Mostly because i can agreed with what the majority feels about it. But when i stumble on a hidden gem that's not recognized then yes i will speak my mind.
I went to see this film just because i love Ms McIntosh in her roles. And shes a beauty as well so yeah that's out. When i saw the trailer and cover i thought this would be at least a little entertaining. Oh was i wrong.
The movie starts slow so you'll have to stick with it for half an hour but you will probably not regret it. It just needs that time to have the story open up to us. So without giving spoilers..if you like a thriller with horror elements and you don't mind a low budget that's remarkably well done... then i recommend this.
I still have hopes that this will have a follow up. There is still enough left to validate one. When you've seen the ending you might think so as well.
Mechanic: Resurrection (2016)
Not worth the time
First off, I'm a HUGE Jason fan. At least i was until seeing this flick. I love his rough appearance and his great fighting choreography, not to mention his amazing way to put down some awesome one-liners. So when seeing this i had no doubt i would be pleasantly entertained. Unfortuatly nothing could be further from the truth. Usually i don't look to closely at a movie. I don't have to conclude if something that's happening actually can. But with this movie it really forces you to see ALL the mistakes. There is no logic to the story what so ever. The action scenes are just meh... nothing anyone of us haven't seen numerous times and better.
I hope that this movie is really a fluke and that the next movies are off the usual quality that we expect from Jason. After all hes not a director or the writer.
Hoping i can forget seeing this bitter pill very shortly.
Creed (2015)
Decent movie in its genre.
I've been a huge fan of the Rocky Balboa movies, where this is a spin-off/ continuation off. I saw Rocky rise, stumble and get back up again through out the series. After the Rocky Balboa movie it was clear.. my beloved character wouldn't be able to take on the gloves in a believable way. So thats one of the angles of "Creed". Rocky fans will instanly know what Creed stands for and yes your suspicions are true. Without giving spoilers i think this was a good road to go by. It has its roots in the previous movies while still staying fresh enough to get the attention of people who never saw every Rocky movie or even none at all. Now why i only gave it a 7. Although this movie is good its far from great. It clearly shows its not directed by Mr Stallone. And even though its a tough job and the director did perform nicely.. it feels just a little off. Another reason for my grade is the explanation of the character and his background. I felt it to far-fetched for a movie connected to the Rocky series. They could have gone with a more simple and easier believable path then this one. Also some fight scenes bothered me greatly. Usually i never see mistakes in movies the first time i watch them. But here.. i did. A jab that doesn't land even close and still they try to sell as if it did, the special make-up for wounds inflicted. Not something i enjoy seeing.
Still it is a good movie even though it could have been better. After all its just the first one. All the new characters have to grow in their role and this is a tough time to reboot or even continue an excisting franchise. It also answers small questions that were still unanswered. That really pleased me as a fan and for that i compliment the people who made this. If there is a sequel made then yes i will watch it. ALthough i hope everyone is more used to their role by then. I also hope more characters will return from previous ones. Especially old opponents.
If your a Rocky fan you'll want to see this. Just don't expect a Rocky-like quality or even a Rocky Jr kind of movie. Its a Creed movie. Bare that in mind.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Strong movie that leaves an impact for years to come.
This movie has stayed with me for several years after watching. And although its not my sort of genre.. it did deliver.
If you haven't watched this movie yet, i suggest not reading up on it and just go in blank for the best result. The story is just overall great and the casting is top notch. It really pulls you in and thats saying a lot for someone who has watched so many movies like me. So my recommendation is to load up on drinks and snacks before hitting the Play button.
After seeing this movie i searched for movies with the actors that shined in this one. But even they deliver mostly in all their films, its never like their performance in this.
The only reason im not giving a straight 10 is simply because of my way of rating. But if this was my sort of genre it would have been a straight ten! So overall, a must see movie.
