Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody (2022)
There must be another way...
With all the respect for the human being, who had her hardships in life... there must be another way how to tell this kind of biopic. I watched the movie about Tina Turner almost back to back with this one and let me tell you, it is like watching the same movie.
This undermines not only the person in the center of the movie, our heroine, but the viewer as well.
So here is the story... take a girl, with a golden voice. Sings in church, is better than anyone else, but the oldschool older woman tells her to stay in line. But all she wants is to sing. One night miraculously she sings in front of a crowd, she is shy but sings like a goddes, a producer hears her. Contract. Lights. Fame. Albums. Fans. Needs love. Finds husband. Trouble. More fame. Money. Sad family life. Moneytrouble. Sandes. But Hope. She finds empowerment. In herself. And a grand singing finale in a beautiful dress, thousands of people. Hopeful song. Epilogue with real pictures of the reallife lady, wrap up text over emotional music. Credits. Soundtrack by artist, that had no personal involvment in the movie.
I love Whitney, she was an amazing artist, a voice of her generation.
There needs to be another way how to tell this kind of story, in a unique way. Look at the Elvis biopic. That's what these legends deserve.
Don't Look Up (2021)
It wanted to be something else
The blueprint looked nice, but somehow it did not work out. Loved the cast, liked the initial idea and spent the rest of the movie involutarily analysing, what must have gone wrong that this well thought out film is neither funny, nor particularly eye opening or emotional at any point. The conclusion is somewhat satisfying, it has 2 mid- and post-credit scenes, so don't miss out on those. The final product is a social commentary, but probably meant to be something more, it just never got there.
Invincible (2021)
Binge-watched in 2 sittings
Great story, great characters, very good sence of humour and is not affraid of showing a lot of blood - but the violence actually makes the story more believable. And has something that many superhero stories lack - consequences. Can't wait for season 2!
Creed II (2018)
Good addition to the story
Not many movie franchises keep their story relevant for so many sequels, but here we are, 45 years after the first Rocky movie and it still has something to say. It keeps the rythm that we want from a Rocky movie, creates full circle moments, punches when it has to, hugs you in the right places and MBJ does a great job here. This is how sequels should be made.
Global Metal (2008)
Feelgood and Mind opening
I am not a metal fan myself and still absolutely loved this movie. And after watching this I agree that the anthropology books need some update about the current culture.
Midsommar (2019)
I love this movie so much
Have you ever felt like screaming from emotional pain but were unable to do so? This movie deals with pain, isolation and repressed emotions but makes sure you feel all of those hidden feelings once they boil over. Magical surroundings trick you into believing you are safe here, a tense movie set in meadows full of flowers, how brilliant. Don't expect your usual horror movie, no jump scares, but a creeping feeling of unease and then a gut punch. Go watch this. Eat before.
Love and Monsters (2020)
Chicken Soup for Apocalypse
Hey, this actually made me feel good about how people could behave towards each other in tough times. Has real nice visuals, good sence of humour and made me go "awww" at times. Do it.
Thunder Force (2021)
Another Spy Kids movie nobody asked for
I was actually excited to see a superhero movie starring Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer, both of whom I love, and hoped to see a different type of hero for once. The story could have been interesting, showing a different point of view by mature adult women, who have zero interest in proving anything to anybody anymore, or just realizing their true power, something... But this just looks like a vanity project, or friends
making a "fun" movie to spend time with eachother, what a waste of CGI, if a movie has no good writing and relies on "fart jokes". Octavia Spencer just looks checked out for the entire movie, which is such a shame since she actually is a brilliant actress. There is so much missing here, and I really wanted to like this. Another popcorn movie, but feel free to cook dinner while having this in the background.
Moxie (2021)
Empowering feelgood movie for young girls
Too many times have we seen the same story about bullying in high school and took it as a necessary part of coming of age. When is it time to speak up? When is it time to say - that's enough? How to stand your ground when others make you believe you are overreacting? Watch it with your daughter and tell her to always hold her head up high.
The Babadook (2014)
A Loveletter to Grief
I have not read the reviews, didn't have to. This movie was made by someone who has understood what it means having to hide your pain, not to be able to surrender to grief, to hurt out loud. It is not a movie about a monster, it is about loss and duty and how we are required to move on even if we are not ready to do so... This movie is wonderful in that sence. It turns your inner hurt into a real monster and yet still works as a simple horror movie. Even if it's so much more. Go watch this.
Coming 2 America (2021)
If you like Coming to America, you will like this
I used to watch Coming to America as a kid whenever it was on and in our home it is a classic. And yes, the sequel might not be a progressive update of the original, but rather a loveletter to the spirit of the first movie. Packed with cameos, you will enjoy this old school tribute to the original Prince od Zamunda. Relax, grab some popcorn and enjoy this pure escapism. Why not.
