Room to Let (1950)
Genuinely chilling performance by villain of the piece.
Very much of its time but an extremely interesting take on the Jack the Ripper case. Valentine Dyall is incredibly menacing as Dr Fell. Unsettling in the extreme & in my opinion a fantastic performance. Great to see a young Charles Hawtrey in this - one of our National Treasures. Impressive film despite still me parts of the plot being implausible.
Inside No. 9: Mr. King (2022)
Best episode ever.
I've watched these ever since the first one. I think these are the best writers we've had in decades. I was amazed they were allowed to make this in this Wokeworld we live in!
Hammer House of Horror: Visitor from the Grave (1980)
Tales of the Totally Expected!
It's hard to equate this worse than 'am dram' effort with the Hammer regular Peter Sadsy. Cheesy in the extreme.
The Serpent (2021)
Thrilling
Excellent, gripping drama. Well acted throughout. The story would be unbelievable if it were not true! Some reviews have pointed out the frequent timeline jumping. I personally found that watching it as a "box set" seemed to lessen that feeling. A refreshing change to see a work of such high quality from BBC these days!
Pennies from Heaven (1978)
Dennis Potter's Magnum Opus
Tour de Force performances throughout. Sublime production. BBC rarely does anything like this nowadays. A world away from the dumbed down tripe that is all too common today.
American Horror Story: Boy Wonder (2018)
Oh dear!
Worst episode of this whole story. Why on earth the obsession with Stevie Nicks. Even her fans must be embarrassed by her 'contribution, to this episode. Why Misty Day is obsessed with her is beyond me. I would advise anyone to skip this whole episode. The whole season is weak in comparison to other seasons and I've kept the blu-ray for completeness only (that and Jessica Lange's superb performances).
American Horror Story: Return to Murder House (2018)
Jessica Lange Shows How It's Done
Top drawer performance by Jessica Lange. She is streets ahead of anyone else in this series.
The Love Witch (2016)
You can't be serious!
This has got to be one of the worst films I've ever sat through. The acting/writing are like a village am-dram farce. The sets look like they were made from cardboard and the "story", if I can call it that, is nonsensical. The only thing I liked was the bizarre 60s/70s feel to the cinematography. Utter bilge.
The Ripper (1997)
Just too inaccurate to enjoy.
Yes, I know it's fiction but they could have at least made an attempt to get the known facts right. It's full of holes, crime scene photo of Mary Kelly (still alive at that stage), Prince Eddy was never at Eton (privately educated in the Royal household together with his brother George), he was NOT the heir to the throne (second in line). Other than Sir Charles Warren, the police officers are totally fictitious.
Other than Samuel West, the accents are shockingly bad. Maybe Americans think Londoners have an Aussie twang (& Aussies wouldn't care) but I'm afraid it's just very bad voice coaching. Dick Van Dyke did a better job!
I know it's entertainment but shockingly researched tripe like this just irks.
Watch any (or most) of the many films on this subject and you'll have a more enjoyable time and a more accurate story.
