Prime Suspect (2011)
Top marks for Prime Suspect
I Love the show. Thought Maria Bello and all the cast do a great job - I really hope that NBC does the right thing and makes series 2. If you haven't seen it - take a look. Maria gives a stellar performance as Jane Timony with all her Irish angst. Gritty series that gets you involved in the cops personal lives as much as the murder cases they are trying to solve. It was an excellent idea to film in New York rather that San Francisco as originally planned. The New York Irish references work well. I watched the ITV version of Prime Suspect and though I enjoyed the British show; the NBC version is better - more action and viewer involvement in the show is better. 10 out of 10!
The Hurt Locker (2008)
Annoying
I went to The Hurt Locker with high expectations, but should have known it was written by an embedded reporter who does very little to question the motives of the Iraqis or indeed the US forces in this film. Every Iraqi is either a stone-thrower, an insurgent or a kid selling porn to the troops. If I were an Iraqi - I'd want to join the insurgency just siting through this subtle propaganda! And what exactly are the motives of the 3 main troops? Why are they almost always on their own? What were they doing in the middle of the desert when they stumble on a bunch of Brit special forces? What a bunch of nonsense. The action scenes are well done but completely predictable. The dialog between the shrink and the 20 something year old grunt is simply ridiculous! The director stumbles along without a message or a reason. The main characters are self-pitying players in a war way out of their debt of understanding. so little did I care for both the story and the players that I left ten minutes before the end of this frustrating and wasted opportunity.
Gomorra (2008)
Review
Gamorra is Italian cinema at it's best. Outstanding. Hollywood would have destroyed this film had it been made there. The acting is first rate - the cinematography as real as it gets, and the film never shows the outside world - just what's happening in Naples. The guy who wrote the book is under police protection, and these gangsters have been shockingly linked to involvement in the World Trade Center rebuilding project!
I've read some negative comments on this page by people who seem more concerned about popcorn. Maybe they should stick to blockbusters cinema cause Gamorra is much more complicated and requires knowledge and thought.
Crossing the Bridge: The Sound of Istanbul (2005)
A Kurdish singer
This movie is one of the most memorable films I have seen. I went reluctantly with a Turkish friend who recommended it. I am not a very enthusiastic proponent of music documentaries, but when Aynur Dogan, a Kurdish woman banned for years from singing in Turkey, sings her piece, the theater was in awe. I would give my all to hear a CD recording of this haunting, gorgeous song. And she is just one of many artist interviewed and recorded, speaking of their experiences of performing in Istanbul. Even now, a month later, I remember the footage of Aynur singing in an acoustic auditorium, and I try to remember the music as it echoed in the cinema. Well done to Faith Akin, the director of this film, and his great idea to capture the many splendid sounds of such a cosmopolitan city. It would certainly encourage me to visit Istanbul.
