George & Tammy (2022)
all good, do not miss
I thought that this movie was done to perfection. I believe that it presented the characters accurately. The singing was spot on and hard to believe but both actors did it.
Makeup, hair, costumes, were all perfect.
The acting was amazing. Not just Jessica Chastian who won an award but Michael Shannon was amazing. He broke my heart. He so perfectly enacted the heartbreaking alcoholism and the angst of screwing up his life with the woman he adored.
Poignant, touching, fun and the songs were great.
I thought that this was so well done. I highly recommend watching it and have told my friends about it.
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
solid 7, tom cruise is great, action is awesom
I gave this movie a 7 because Tom Cruise is great in it. No one 'movie runs' like he does. He is also able to pull off those wry lines and I like a dark sense of humor. The action is great, esp at the end. The train sequences are terrifying.
The car chases became boring. The story line was so weak and silly, that if you wanted to enjoy the movie , don't pay attention to the story. Very lame, very contrived, not at all convincing. Really, not much good about this.
You could walk out and come back and not miss much. Leave in a car chase, return in a car chase. Yawn
but the train sequences were terrifying.
Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing & Charm School (2005)
Donnie Wahlberg is worth the price of admission
Diverse cast, light entertainment . This is a featherweight movie though it has done heavy subjects such as suicide, grief, loss, violence but is entertaining. It's also pretty forgettable, except For Donnie Wahlberg who is hilarious as Randall Ipswich. He absolutely steals every scene he's in. Effortlessly as a pompous dancer he is hilarious and a really good dancer. Kudos Donnie I loved you in this role and think you need to do comedy.
Blindspotting (2018)
Interesting, upsetting, funny
I would have scored this interesting film higher but I found the "rapping" unnecessary and inappropriate and it ruined a powerfull scene but all in all a a good film worth a message powerfully delivered. Great acting.
The Outsider (2018)
Jared Leto should have gotten an Oscar
I was mesmerized by him on screen. His performance was breathtaking. Normally I can't hang in with violence, but he is so beautiful and his face is so delicate, almost feminine, so the fact that he could create a character that was quietly intimidating and terrifying was extraordinary. His face showed every emotion even when it was barely visible. I could go on and on but I gave this movie a 9 based on his complex and extraordinary performance. He should have gotten an oscar. Watch this movie which has it's own merit but don't miss seeing him.
Only Lovers Left Alive (2013)
The most beautiful yawn of a movie
Beautifully shot, so very well acted, but egad.....it is one serious yawn.
Nothing happens or if it does, it's in such slow motion you can't tell.
The camera work, the photography, film editing and the very lovely acting by both leads is fabulous.
I found the music irritating and distracting.
The story is dull and draggy and come on!!! This is vampires, how do you make a dull vampire movie.
Can't even recommend to my movie buff friends.
To the Wonder (2012)
movie to cure insomnia
Love Ben Affleck, love what he does. Love Rachel McAdams, and Javier Bardem but how did the director get them to all act as if they were in comas? How did his get them to whisper everything? Artsie fartsie, and I'm a film buff and I like the unusual but this was a total snore fest. I kept waiting for something to happen.
BAD story, boring, bad editing, too drawn out, bad directing...too much spinning around, the female lead was not 3 years old......this was simply AWFUL.
Puppy Love (2020)
You won't forget this movie
This is not a movie for everyone. It shows a very seedy underbelly of life and because it's about prostitution and drug use, it's very graphic. That said, the lead was so well played, the casting is perfect, Carla was perfect. The way the story was built was perfect, the hot tub setting.....won't give you any spoilers. I thought that this movie was very well done. When it was especially seedy, there would be some great humor, the Morgan character could deliver a poignant and yet hilarious line like no one else. Again, because of the graphic nature, this is not always a fun film, but I loved it and I'm so glad that I got to see it at the Fort Lauderdale Film Festival. A film for film buffs. Well done!
Restless (2012)
GREAT cast, interesting suspenseful story
I enjoyed these for a lot of reasons. Suspenseful story.
I find that Charlotte Rampling is always in reat stuff
Arthur Newman (2012)
Yawn
I like both Colin Firth and Emily blunt so I was very disappointed in the movie. Colin Firth was appropriately boring and Emily Blunt did a very good job in her role. But the movie in its entire ready was a yawn. Plot wa thin, pace was off and the two leads didn't have chemistry, so bad casting
Just Mercy (2019)
Well crafted film
Well crafted legal docu- drama. Excellent acting. Facts about unfairness were stated but not overly dramatized. The corruption was left to show itself for what it was. Nice ending, sewing up details. Timely movie
The Rider (2017)
Perfect film
This film is perfect in every way, great acting, great casting, great story, great directing, great cinematography. It's a quiet little, unassuming film that works it's way into your heart and stays with you. Hollywood won't acknowledge this, it's the runt of the litter, but it will be your best choice
A Place to Call Home (2013)
Binge Worthy ....Loved it
At first I was a bit of a snob. I thought it was a little too soap-operay. but soon enough I was hooked.
The characters, the settings, the clothes, the cars, all were so wonderful! The dramatic story lines sometimes were lame (but I didn't care) because sometimes they were riveting. The acting suited the plot at the time, sometimes a bit hard to accept the drama, but still.....if you liked Downton Abbey, you'll like this smaller, country version of a family saga
This is a great series to dive into and look forward to watching. I found it such a wonderful, pleasant relief from the violence in current day American series. There's violence but it's not graphic.
Liked this a lot....it's so enjoyable.
Brotherhood (2006)
cut out some of the graphic violence
The series is great. The lead actors are fabulous, both brothers and the supporting cast. Perfect casting, great story, all exellently done.
I highly recommend watching this, HOWEVER, be prepared to hold the mute button and cover your eyes. The violence is too and unecessarily graphic. I didn't need it, didn't want it, didn't like it and it did nothing to help the story, only hurt it by making people turn away.
I will look up both Jasons, lead characters. Both so damn handsome, each in his own way and follow their work, but truly after this, I had to go watch British and Austrailian series. My fellow Americans have to stop supporting such graphic violence
The Last Kingdom (2015)
would have given this a 9, but.....
The sound track is HIDEOUS. Never in my life of being a movie buff have I been so tormented by a howling, screeching, wailing that is the sound track. The voice? The singing.......is there a bigger word than horrible?
The characters are great, they're Vikings.....come on, all that machismo. The stories are loosely based on history. The sets are great, the lighting, cinematogrpahy all wonderful, but that damn sound track.
I couldn't watch this without holding onto the remote, with my finger near the mute button. So, while I blame the sound people, it's mostly the fault of the producers. What were you thinking to ruin this wonderful series? I guess I could respond by steppng on a cats tail into a mike for you.
Vault (2019)
If you like true crime and history
If you like true crime and history, as I do, I enjoyed this. I loved the facts, the locations, Providence, the towns, and the zany spot-on characters. I thought this was fun and well done. The casting was superb, the acting was good, the cinematography could have been a bit better, but all in all, this is a fabulous heist movie that is TRUE. Not a commercial film, but I liked that it had an artsie feel to it. I've already recommended it.
I read the rest of the reviews and had to laugh about the 'bad acting' I've lived in Boston, and know Providence and run into these 'characters'. Not the ones in the movie but similar and trust me, that's not bad acting, that is spot on acting for character that ARE bad actors. They walk like that, they talk like that, they interact like that. It was so funny to me that the reviewers missed that. Good job on the film!!
Is That You? (2014)
Loved this quiet, endearing sleepily lovely film
Loved this, that's all.
It's imperfections make it wonderful, slow, and sleepily. Being poorly filmed adds to the realism and convinces me that's its real and has a message.
Don't expect to be wowed, rather welcome this into your home and let it grow into your heart
The Irishman (2019)
It's all good
Great cast, great story, great acting, totally held my interest the entire time. I see loads of movies and I loved this.
Can You Keep a Secret? (2019)
Inoffensive schlock
Yes she had pretty eyes but it was predictable and not remotely believable, uncomfortably goofy. Seriously, who would ever dress like that for work? Transparent plot. A grade b hallmark movie for those who insist on a "feel good" movie
Berlin, I Love You (2019)
Watch this for one of the BEST performances you'll ever see
I saw BERLIN I LOVE YOU on Netflix. It was great to see snippets of the high energy and mad fun of the bars of that city very accurately depicted. They are unlike bars any place else and helped liven up this slow moving film.
Additionally, I like stories with a lot of different moving parts that get sewn together. Cate Blanchett is always great and there was a nice mother-daughter dynamic piece with Kiera Knightly.
AH, but Mickey Rourke, whose face looks like it got hit by a train, was incredible. He delivered an amazing performance. The small piece of story that was his, was a performance that you'll never forget and makes the whole thing worth watching. You won't forget him.
Spitak (2018)
A historic event treated with dignity and honesty
This film revolves around the massive earth quake that hit the Armenian town of Spitak. It is an excellent depiction and considering the subject matter was handled very well. The acting was superb and it reminded me in the finest way of a Ron Howard film with all the attention to detail.
It's an historic event handled so well. I understand that this is winning a lot of awards
A Star Is Born (2018)
Oscar....Oscar....Oscar!
If Bradley Cooper doesn't get an Oscar for his sensational performance in this movie I am never watching the Oscars shows again, because they will be worthless. I have never seen a man look at a woman the way he did in this movie that showed such love and pride .
I thought to myself that I had to see this movie because a third remake is a classic " give me a break, you couldn't come up with a new idea ??"
He was a fabulous, his acting his singing he was spot on perfect. Lady Gaga's first acting performance, was very good. The role was a natural for her as a singer and a performer and as she was very good in it.
The storyline was updated and more credible, Sam Eliot is always wonderful as a great character actor, and who could ever tire of his low rumbling growl of a voice. It melts my butter for sure, And for some reason, Bradley Cooper as his brother, had that same beautiful tonal quality of Sam Elliot's.
This movie pretty much had it all; the acting, the casting, the directing, the music, the storyline, the cinematography, but I have to say the movie really was Bradley Cooper, and to outshine Lady Gaga's belting it out from the bottom of her sultry boots, well , that's saying something
Ray Donovan (2013)
Fabulous, great writing, acting and memorable characters
Finally, actors that get a Boston accent right, of course it is a perfect south Boston accent. At first I was put off by the stereotypical drinking and brawling and the excessive profanity. In the end, it did suit the characters it did suit the characters.
The acting is great, but truly Jon Voight steals every scene, and he does have some of the best lines. It's not only his best role, but it's a legendary character.
All the other actors are very good. I would give this a 10, but I believe that they I have a new writer doing season five. The story line has become botched, with the backwards and forwards, of flashbacks and chopping up the sequence of events. So,while the characters are great, and the acting is great, the writing is terrible in season five.
Please go back to the great other writers that you had in the first four seasons.
When I say this is like an Irish 'Sopranos ' I mean this as a great compliment. compliment.
The Promise (2016)
The Promise a very special film
The Promise keeps it's word. It is a wonderful film. It's a lovely story line built into historically accurate facts with such authenticity. I was amazed at the accuracy of the information provided, yet the story line and manner of handling horrors beyond imagination, was very well done. The movie softens it all.
I wondered if it was too soft but realized that a brief snippet of what happened was enough.
There was an event that occurred that took place in 40 days and yet in the film it appeared to be only 2 or 3 days, but I guess it would be herd to portray that.
The acting was superb, and it's hard to pick who I though played it the best. Wonderful actors and a delightful cameo from one of my favorites, Jean Remo.
Go see this movie.
Nymphomaniac: Vol. I (2013)
low brow porno disguised as a pseudo phychological drama
This film would have gotten a 1, but I gave this yawn a 3 because of Stellan Scarsgard. It was a boring excuse of a film. Actually, it was so bad and so downright silly at times that it was comical. Two brothers with large bouncing erections arguing over who has which position with a girl, while she got up and left and they never noticed, was hilarious.
The lead premise seems to be 'freedom of expression through sexual gratification and exploration' etc was just absurd. Film has lots of graphic sex, vaginal penetration by numerous objects (some sharp and quite unpleasant) so if that's your cup of tea, you'll get that, though I find vaginas boring.
A lot of it is pretty disgusting, and some of it is pretty upsetting (the neglect of a child).
The really funny disclaimer, much like 'no animals were hurt during the filming of this film' was that 'none of the professional actors engaged in penetration, a body double was used".
Perhaps the most comical is the entire pomposity and pretense of being a high brow film, when it's just ordinary, and only funny by accident, though it does have an impressive few cameo appearances.
