Manhunt (2024)
Jumbled Facts and Creative Dialogue
Okay, first of all Stanton never looked that good. He was short, paunchy and had a beard the size of Indiana. When you see a move "based" on a book or "based" on a true story, you would hope at least some of it was reasonably accurate. Some aspects of this series are accurate to a degree. Most, not so much. As drama, it's fine. But, why take a remarkable true story and burden it with unbelievable situations? History is inherently fascinating when played straight. This is a mishmash. The acting is adequate, the production values satisfactory, but so much is lost with the storytelling. Read the book, or any book about Lincoln's assassination. And another thing, Lincoln hated being called Abe. It was either Lincoln, or Mr. President.
Little Big Horn (1951)
Better Than Expected-Worth the Viewing
A low-budget western that really tries to be a better film. The writing is a little stilted and the drama suffers from some low-energy performances. Unlike similar (and bigger-budget films), care was taken with uniforms that are similar to real campaign clothing-note the cartridge belts. Troopers carry Springfield carbines;no Winchesters, thank God. A good Saturday afternoon feature that keeps the action coming. It's obvious the director studied Ford's cavalry trilogy and puts it to good use. It definitely is an under-appreciated film that deserves a closer look. It's also fun to pick out the familiar faces.
Ink (2009)
Another Small Gem
Finding indie films that are rewarding has become a passion of mine. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Ink is one of the better films that deserves notice. Imaginative if a bit complex, the film is well-written and acted. As a parent (with a daughter), the film resonates with my love for my child and a desire to do whatever I can for her. Unlike CGI bloated films, Ink offers a gentle and heart-felt journey into choices we all make, and those we wish we had not. I especially appreciate the off-beat characters which add a great deal to the story. The strong performances ring true, strengthen the film, and bring depth to the story.
The Man from Earth (2007)
One Man's Story
Set in a rural cabin, several academics gather to bid good bye to one of their colleagues. His story, fictional or the truth, captivates and angers them. A fascinating script with superb performances from a talented cast adds so much to this sometimes moving, often confounding movie. The question for the gathering is: do they believe this soft-spoken man? Each of the participants react differently, facing long held, preconceived notions of history, religion and philosophy. The drama unfolds not because of what they are told but rather, its impact on them. I found this film be thought-provoking and beautifully written.
The Fare (2018)
A Must See
I'v e been scrolling through IMDB trying to find those small films that are sometime ignored. As a hopeless romantic I seldom find the connection with a film that I look for. THE FARE is different. A superbly told story about love, longing, and the pain of loss, this film, in a gentle but effective way concerns two people whose lives intersect for a short period in a cab ride. Both actors approach their roles in an under-stated but effective fashion, adding enough humanity for us to care about them, but also to remind us they are just people trying to make the most out of their existence. Skillfully told, THE FARE is an intriguing film.
All Eyes (2022)
Well-done
I try to find movies that surprise me and this is one. Although it received a low rating (I suppose because it's a low-budget), All Eyes is a charming, fun and scary film. The acting is first rate and the story intriguing. Watch it and forget about the CGI bloated films that populate movie screens. Both central characters add pathos to the story and take the viewer in an unexpected direction. It would be worth-while to see what the team could do with a decent budget and another good story. Don reminds me of some of the cantankerous charactersI know and its played superbly. I recommend the film with a tub of popcorn for a late-night veiwing.
