Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
as a kid i remember this being well better
Scenes just happen, a scene happens that gives reason for the next scene, but only trivially, it feels like a 2 hour trailer, CGI looks like a joke edit on youtube from someone who just learned using a greenscreen, camera shots are lackluster.
I wont bother going in further but i lasted about 3 minutes and i couldnt find a single interesting thing about the film, stuff just happens for the spectacle and this being the peak of pop-culture at the time.
Jelgava 94 (2019)
missed a few spots, but fun while it lasts
My review is coming from someone that has read the book, so i had more context for the movie scenes and an easier time following it. The first half followed the book very loosely, setting the mood for a 90s jelgava a city in a Slavic country, being not too far from it myself it looked very accurate and sold the mood and atmosphere well. I thought the characters were well transitioned to film, almost all of them feeling right on. the transition from a smart kid to a metal head was good, seeing janis develop as a person was interesting and made me remember my adolescence at bits. the whole film had plenty of humor and swearing, making it come off more real, because that's jelgava in the 90s for you.
But the other half of the film really rushed through the events, in what felt like an afterthought, as in they filmed half of it and realized they don't have the budget/time to make this film long enough to fit everything. and the ending was pretty bad. for someone who hasn't read the book the ending would be a surprise, it comes out of nowhere, not much has really been told and the story is already over. only a bit has been carried over in the sense that u get that feeling of worthlessness that the book also had, the feeling of maybe it was all for nothing.
The movie also added the main character as an adult going through the memories as he is writing the story as we see it, going through the past. i really liked this addition, sort of felt like the adult smart bit of janis would sometimes step up, and janis would make smarter choices, and when the older janis is in the background the young one makes teenager mistakes like drinking a screwdriver at a party. the book obviously didn't have this and i appreciated this addition to the film version.
The Butterfly Effect (2004)
a different type of time travel movie
I greatly appreciate how different this movie is not only for its time travel rules, but mood, and the questions it asks. Obviously the main thing being just like any other film of the genre, to change the past, but here its about the characters personal life rather than things that are grand scale. The main character does his best to make a reality with no victims, something that unfortunately isn't plausible in a real world. I expected a bit more of a god complex, as he could theoretically change the world until he sees it to be fit, but the rules established don't allow that, and that proves to me that the writing is superb. There was a weird paradox where he did do this and change nothing, making me question the original blackouts, because originally he would have never lived, but that's paradox theory and i can delve into it forever, but this movie does its best at keeping to its rules about time travel.
Grave Encounters (2011)
A lack of focus
At times the movie felt strong, like the start was slow perhaps yes, but felt good and wasn't filled with cheesy fake jumpscares to set the mood, sure it had its goofiness but it felt like it was justified with the characters filming a tv show. But the entire movie felt inconsistent in most aspects, scares and the paranormal activity didn't have a general focus of what really is haunting them, it was more of a let's see what scary moments can we make up as we go. most of the time it was patients as demons or what not, and the building changing shape. but at one moment some kind of mist comes and makes a character simply disappear. Also the loss of time, it isn't really explained how they didn't starve although its meant to be 3 days or more towards the end. and at the very end some satanic bs was introduced with what looked like a book with Nordic symbols in it. To put it simply if the movie did what it did at its best moments for the whole movie it would be a pleasant found footage horror, but this had me laughing at half of the scares simply because how out of the blue they were.
Trainspotting (1996)
I never thought id give a movie a 10
But this title seems worthy of that number, to me a movie can never be really perfect, that's what makes it special in a sense as well, however this film is beyond that to me. The characters are fun and painfully real, they have their needs,. wants and dislikes and a life philosophy. Even tho we follow the main character, we aren't always rooting for him, he ruins life for everyone around him, and even when he tries to be better he does it still. the story and characters besides, if i were to watch this movie on mute i'd still enjoy my time, because the camerawork and scenes are a pleasure to look at, the film has fun with its visuals where it can, making many very memorable scenes have that extra touch to make them even more memorable. Its packed with scenes that matter, leaving almost no filler, its both fun and depressing at times, but always seems to know when to be which. The Scottish setting and accents added a great feel of authenticity and making it neat and dialogs, although sometimes harder to understand, much more memorable.
