Bruiser (2000)
Best Romero since Creepshow...
I finally watched the Bruiser DVD last night...
Movie: Not too bad. Definately Romero's best since Creepshow. Not a slasher flick at all as the cover would have you think. Some pretty cool camera work when Henry comes out of his daydreams.
There's some good acting here and there, for the most part pretty solid, and then some HORRID stuff reserved for the woman who plays #9 (it'll make sense when you see it, she's SO bad).
Peter Stormare plays a sleazeball quite well (tho he does overdo at times) - you'll get to hating his character QUICK, which is a good thing. Don't wanna spoil anything, but he doesn't seem to get his comeuppance as well as you'd want him to. The club ending is kinda sloppy like that.
Video: Pretty sure that was non-anamorphic, but it's widescreen (1:85, I'd say) and pretty decent for a film that didn't get a theatrical release. No real complaints here.
Sound: Dolby Stereo. No surround channels. Which is kind of a shame because the scene where the woman is hiding under a conference table and she doesn't know where the killer is could have been REALLY cool with some panning voices. When you see it you'll think so as well. The finale could have been spiced up some with environment sounds too -- but all in all a decent stereo soundtrack.
Extras: There's a commentary by George that I didn't listen to, and the "Scream" music video by The Misfits (yay!) that George directed. The video's kinda neat, but Jerry Only does ham it up a bit too much at the end. (But I let it slide as they ARE my favorite band...)
All in all, not a bad disc. Hopefully George'll make enough $$ off of this to make Dead 4!
Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992)
What happened?
I'm not quite sure what happened to poor ol' Pinhead, but his character sure got an overhaul for this misfire of a film. He is transformed from his more mysterious visage into a gimmicky Freddy Krueger-type mass-murderer.
Once upon a time in the series, you had to open a puzzlebox searching for the secrets of pain and pleasure to be attacked by the Cenobites. But no more. Hell, all you have to do now is go to a nightclub and you're on the victims list. Sillyness abounds as the DJ becomes a CD throwing cenobite and a cameraman launches missiles (yes, missiles) from the lens buried in his head. Stupid.
Way off base when compared with the rest of the series, and not worth your time.
Unbreakable (2000)
Very surprised how good it was
Ok, first off - i HATED the Sixth Sense. Saw it twice to make sure I wasn't missing anything the first time around, and I still hate it. So, going to see this wasn't my first choice, but a friend had passes so I figure I'll give M. Night a 2nd chance.
I'm so glad I did. While M. Night's camera styles can be a tad overbearing (i.e. the back and forth between the seats on the train or the reflection shots) - this movie really impressed me.
The only thing I didn't like were the epilogues, it would have done better without a synopsis. You can't just expect to sum everything up in a few sentences. That kinda left a bad taste, but the movie overall? Very cool. Try it on for yourself.
