Majo no takkyûbin (1989)
adorable
Okay, so now I've seen a fan-subbed version of the movie, and later the Disney version. Which one did I like better? I can't say. I liked both of them. I agree that most dubs of anime are horrible (the version of Sailor Moon they show on Cartoon Network makes me shudder) I feel that Disney made a heroic effort in staying true to the film, not cutting a thing (I was afraid they'd cut Jiji's funniest line where he sarcastically asks whether Ursula is going to draw Kiki naked). I wonder if the author of the original film worked with Disney to keep it as true to the original as it is?
To the hardcore anime fans, a word of advice. before you jump on the dub trash bandwagon ("I heard the Disneyed version was awful" gimme a break) at least see and evaluate it for yourself.
Beautiful beautiful movie.
The Matrix (1999)
Visually Stunning
This was an awesome movie. It was well shot, the plot was good, and so was the dialogue except for a few cheesy throwaway lines. But dialogue is not what you see a movie for. You see a movie to be entertained, and the Matrix delivers. It is visually beautiful, and the special effects were absolutely amazing. The Kung fu scenes were great, and damn, I want Trinity's wardrobe.
This movie also does something rare. It makes you wonder. What if there really is no spoon?
Enjoy the movie, if you haven't already seen it.
The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love (1995)
Very cute
In terms of cuteness, this movie is equivivalent to a Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan romance, which isn't a bad thing at all. The two leads are sensitive and funny in their portrayals of Evie and Randy. Interesting that Laurel Holloman and Nicole Parker both wound up in the cast of Boogie Nights, no? I especially loved the character of Frank in this movie. A sweet date movie for couples of all orientations, in my opinion. :)
Ladyhawke (1985)
A beautiful movie
This movie is awesome. It is both extremely sad an hilarious. A younger Michelle Pfeiffer is gorgeous as the lady doomed to live by day as a hawk. The imagery is great, Matthew Broderick (he was a cute kid, wasn't he?) is extremely funny. I especially loved that the bad guy wore white and the good guy wore black! You don't see that in every movie. One question, though - what was the composer thinking with the 80's style music over some of the scenes? Argh! See this movie - it is beautiful.
Titanic (1997)
You bunch of Party Poopers.
Okay, I've been on both sides of the fence. I saw the movie. I loved the movie. Are you kidding?? I was sobbing from the moment the orchestra started playing "Nearer my God to thee." (Of course, my friend should not have taken me to see it in an attempt to cheer me up...) Then I got caught up in the trend of dogging the movie. "Oh it has an awful screenplay." "Oh, Kate Winslet and DiCaprio can't act." "Oh, the story is so contrived." "Oh, the movie is too long." "Oh, gawd, if I have to listen to Celine Dion sing 'My Heart Will Go On' one more time I'm going to bash my radio against the wall."
And then I saw it again and got my head on straight. Okay, so the love story is cheesy. ALL LOVE STORIES ARE CHEESY. Otherwise they wouldn't be so goddamned interesting. Next time you fall in love see how intellectual you behave. Yes Celine Dion is awful, but the song is gorgeous when orchestrated (and probably would be if Celine Dion weren't singing it). My only problem with the special effects is that they cost too damned much but let's be realistic - if the people doing them were doing it for the love of computer animation instead of for sucking millions out of Hollywood, it wouldn't have. All the roles are fine for the purposes they served. The Asshole, the mean mother, the lost lover . . . Trust me, it's no cheesier than another great love story I can think of. Do you recognize this one? Boy meets girl at Party. Boy has to marry girl the next day or else, despite the fact that she is from the family of a sworn enemy. Girl agrees. Boy kills girl's Cousin. Oops, he just violated the local ruler's decree, he must now be exiled. Girl feigns death to avoid distasteful marriage. Boy hears girl is dead, kills himself. Girl hears boy is dead, kills herself. Families reconcile. All in the space of four days. And yet everyone loves this story. Yes I'm talking about Romeo and Juliet. I repeat, ALL LOVE STORIES ARE CHEESY. So why does everyone mind that this one is too?
Get real, rent the video or order it on Pay-per-View, see it without the gaggle of heckling friends you went to see it with before. Or if you haven't seen it, goodness me, how can you expect the rest of us to respect your position on the movie IF YOU HAVEN"T EVEN SEEN IT? Come on! Don't believe the hype either way. Just see the movie and then keep your opinion to yourself. It's been a year already, and there are other movies out there. Sheesh.
Practical Magic (1998)
Amusing, in a silly sort of way
This was an amusing way to spend a Friday, but I think if you must see it it will be better on video. Though a much more positive portrayal of Witchcraft than usual, I probably would have liked it better if I didn't know what witchcraft was actually all about.
Beloved (1998)
deliciously haunting
Wow. I was floored by this movie. Once you forget that it's Oprah in Sethe's clothing and she becomes Sethe, (and it's easier to do than you think) the movie takes you over. I agree that it's a movie to be understood with the heart and emotion and not the linear mind. Those looking for pure entertainment will no doubt be disappointed (as shown here) but I applaud the resurgence of movies you have to think about, versus the drivel that's been coming out of Hollywood. Great movie.
