The days of the old CW network are over. Last season, Nexstar took over running the smallest broadcast network and most of the network's remaining original scripted series came to a close. Nexstar is choosing to focus on airing inexpensive acquired programming and unscripted shows in order to make the network profitable. The CW shows depend on ratings more than ever before and have to earn their keep to stay on the air. How many shows will be cancelled or renewed during the 2023-24 season? Stay tuned.

Matthew 25: 35-40 in the Bible says that giving to the unhoused is akin to giving to the lord directly: “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” For Angel Studios, the distributor hopes its unique style of generosity toward its top filmmaker will be a benefit unto themselves as well.
Angel Studios has a 10-year overall film deal in place with Alejandro Monteverde, the director of last year’s “Sound of Freedom” and this year’s “Cabrini,” to direct and produce at least five more theatrical films. In the interim, Monteverde certainly won’t be homeless: As part of the deal, Angel has agreed to purchase Monteverde a house valued between $4-5 million in a location of his choosing. A new faith-based film fund has been set up by former Im Global executive Alexandros Potter and filmmaker Yelena Popovic, behind the hugely successful 2021 drama “Man of God,” about the Greek saint Nectarios of Aegina.
Simeon Faith, one of a number of new announcements in the faith-based film world in recent months, is a dedicated equity film fund focused on financing and producing what it describes as “talent-driven, high-end artistic and commercial fare with strong elements of faith for a global audience.”
The new fund aims to finance one to two films per year over the next four years. The first project on the slate is “Moses the Black,” a story of a gangster in modern day Chicago that is inspired by the fourth-century saint of the same name. The CW has renewed sports drama “All American” for a seventh season. The network has also secured broadcast rights for Season 4 of “The Chosen” and renewed “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” for Season 11.
“All American” is inspired by the life of former NFL linebacker Spencer Paysinger and stars Daniel Ezra as Spencer James, a young football player from Los Angeles. In the currently airing sixth season, Spencer and Jordan (Michael Evans Behling) are juniors at Gau and officially eligible to enter the NFL draft, while a new addition to the coaching staff shifts the team dynamics. Other characters navigate changing relationships, parenthood, legal trouble and grief.
Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios produce “All American” in association with Berlanti Productions. Executive producers include Nkechi Okoro Carroll, Greg Berlanti, Jameal Turner, Sarah Schechter, Mike Herro and David Strauss.

The CW Network has given a 13-episode Season 7 renewal to its flagship drama series All American to premiere in 2025. Additionally, the network today announced pickups for Season 11 of unscripted magic competition series Penn & Teller: Fool Us and Season 4 of The Chosen.
The All American news is not surprising since, as Deadline reported, the college drama had been in the strongest position of any remaining legacy CW scripted series to continue.
All American, whose Season 6 renewal was stipulated in Nexstar’s deal to acquire the CW, is a top ratings performer, and it also is the most economically feasible to produce for its studio, Warner Bros. TV, as its license fee, believed to be north of $1M per episode, is the highest among all 3 “old CW” dramas that were up for renewal this year.

All American has survived another round with Nexstar — but there’s a catch.
The CW, currently controlled by station group Nexstar, has renewed All American for an abbreviated 13-episode seventh season that won’t arrive until 2025. A decision on the future of its spinoff, All American: Homecoming, has not yet been determined as the show is currently airing on the network.
The CW also announced that Penn & Teller: Fool Us has been picked up for an 11th season and secured broadcast rights for the fourth season of Jesus drama The Chosen.

One of the more surprising elements of The CW’s fall schedule unveiled last month was that there was no room for Penn & Teller: Fool Us – one of the longest-running anchors of the network’s unscripted slate.
That’s changed now as the network has renewed the show for Season 11.
It is one of a handful of renewals at the network; The CW also picked up All American for a seventh season and dated season four of religious drama The Chosen.
The magic competition show is centered around the legendary duo, who invite aspiring magicians are invited to perform their best trick to try and fool them. Anyone who succeeds wins the right to perform with Penn & Teller in their show at the Rio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Penn & Teller see the trick only once and have to immediately try to work it out.

“The Chosen” has cornered the American market for Biblical cities.
A historical drama about the life of Jesus, the series is a phenomenon partly because it constructs its first-century settings with such care. The sumptuous visuals deliver the sheen of prestige TV, which has helped garner over 200 million viewers, not to mention the attention of platforms as diverse as Hulu, Netflix, and Peacock. They’re all streaming at least part of the first three seasons, while Season 4 was screened in cinemas this spring in advance of its streaming debut June 2.
To maintain its production standards, the show has constructed a 1,200-acre backlot in Midlothian, Texas. It’s an impressive facility, at least judging by drone videos producers have released, but it doesn’t give “The Chosen” everything it needs. The series also films at a replica of ancient Jerusalem that’s part of a motion picture campus in Utah owned...

The Chosen creator Dallas Jenkins teared up during a livestream telecast Wednesday. He had just won a hard-fought, months-long arbitration with his Biblical drama’s original partner, Angel Studios. The arbitrator had ruled in Jenkins’ company’s favor, freeing him to potentially secure a major exclusive streaming partner to help fund the show’s upcoming seasons.
“What I’m about to say [is] very sad,” Jenkins said (video below). “The arbitrator’s decision comprehensively affirmed our position…and The Chosen‘s relationship with Angel Studios is effectively over. We take no pleasure in this. We want to reiterate our deep appreciation for their immeasurable role in how they launched the show. But we came to the conclusion that we simply had no choice [but to split with Angel] for the future of our company and the show.”
Jenkins then announced the news Chosen fans had long waited for — a season four streaming date.

Angel Studios is planning to appeal an arbitrator’s ruling that ended its relationship with the producers of faith-based TV megahit “The Chosen.” The news comes as The Chosen LLC — the company behind the production of series — announced this week that the show’s Season 4 would exclusively stream on “The Chosen” app starting with the first two episodes on June 2.
In a statement, Angel Studios CEO Neal Harmon said it will “pursue the appeal provision that Angel and The Chosen agreed to as the process for resolving disagreements privately.”
In a unique distribution model, “The Chosen” Season 4 was first released in theaters this February, where it scored big box office returns. But after that, the show’s TV premiere remained in limbo as Angel Studios and The Chosen LLC tussled over the season premiere plans.
“The Chosen” started in 2017 as a partnership between Dallas Jenkins and Angel Studios, originally financed through crowdfunding.

Ever since The CW announced the changes that would lead to the rebranding of an entire network, viewers weren't sure what exactly that would mean for their favorite shows. However, understanding came as soon as the network began canceling its own originals one by one, leaving the old loyal audience with nothing to look forward to.
With the cancellation of Walker, the show produced by The CW star of more than 20 years, Jared Padalecki, it became clear that the network didn't want to look back and keep ties with the audience it used to attract. With only Wild Cards and All American under its belt, it needs to find something else for the new viewers to come around.
When Will The Chosen Season 4 Premiere?
The Chosen, which premiered in 2017, has become the most successful crowdfunded TV series or film project in history, attracting millions of viewers and posting consistently strong numbers across all streaming platforms.

“It was, by every objective measure, one of the most devastating days of my life,” Dallas Jenkins recalls.
The Midwest-born director and son of a best-selling author of Christian novels had for years struggled to build a Hollywood career and had finally landed his big break: directing a movie for Get Out producer Jason Blum, who shared Jenkins’ belief that there was an untapped market for elevated religious fare. Their film — 2017’s rom-com The Resurrection of Gavin Stone — scored “insanely” well at a test screening and their hopes were high.
Then came opening weekend.
“I was at home with my wife and shell-shocked,” Jenkins recalls. Gavin Stone ranked 18th at the box office and opened to just $1.2 million. “I mean, we were crying. I thought this was my chance. I had finally got in the door. I was working with one of the most prolific and influential producers in Hollywood,...

It’s been less than two years since the close of Nexstar’s acquisition of The CW and the network’s primetime slate could not look more different.
In addition to the broadcaster’s shifted focus to sports, unscripted fare and foreign imports/co-productions, The CW will soon be getting into the original TV movie business. In an interview with Variety, network president Dennis Miller and president of entertainment Brad Schwartz revealed that The CW is planning to air its own slate of films (in addition to acquired features) on Sunday nights beginning later this year.
The network already has a Sunday night movie block, which will continue in the fall according to the network’s newly-released fall 2024 schedule. But in addition to airing well-known studio movies, they will be producing movies of their own — as many as ten. The network is prepping a deal with an unnamed TV movie...

Oh, God. The enfant terrible of animated comedies is delivering unto us a Season 22 finale of biblical proportions. Because after Family Guy’s near-quarter of a century on the air, nothing is sacred! “I never thought I’d hear myself say this as a writer,” confesses Richard Appel, a showrunner alongside Alec Sulkin, “but the Standards and Practices department at Fox is easy to work with and pretty good with us.” Due in part to the sheer success of the cartoon, as well as its consistent ability to push the envelope without inspiring boycotts (anymore), Guy has gotten away with decades of gags other shows wouldn’t dare to attempt—like tonight’s trip back to the days of Jesus. A travesty, you say? Even the respected drama The Chosen has a sense of humor—witness its Jesus (Jonathan Roumie) cracking jokes! The episode kicks off with Brian the dog...

Talk about a prediction of biblical proportions.
Angel Studios — home of the 2023 sleeper hit Sound of Freedom — told theater owners gathered at CinemaCon on Wednesday that it intends for its upcoming film David to be the top-grossing animated film of all time.

Also returning is exec producer Dallas Jenkins, who directs and also writes with Ryan Swanson and Tyler Thompson. “The Chosen” also continues to be a fully independent production, with global distribution rights handled by Lionsgate.
