With his latest film, Blackout (not to be confused with The Blackout), Larry Fessenden finally gets around to tackling the werewolf mythos. He’s dealt with vampires in Habit, Frankenstein and his creation in Depraved, and even the Wendigo in the film of the same name. Now he ventures to Talbot Falls, I wonder where he got that name from, for a tale of lycanthropy, small town corruption and what it means to be human.
Blackout begins traditionally enough for a horror film with a couple having sex outdoors, running afoul of a large, hairy creature before introducing us to Charley. He’s an artist with a drinking problem, or at least that’s what he tells people is the cause of his monthly blackouts. Of course, he,...

Ken Kelsch, the hard-charging cinematographer and Vietnam War veteran who shot the down-and-dirty classic Bad Lieutenant and 11 other features for iconoclastic director Abel Ferrara, has died. He was 76.
Kelsch died Monday at Hackettstown Medical Center in New Jersey after a battle with Covid and pneumonia, his son, Chris Kelsch, told The Hollywood Reporter.
“If you knew him, you probably have a story about him,” Chris wrote on Facebook. “He really was a great man, loved by many. A war hero who filled every room with his presence. An artist who never stopped being himself. A caring father who would do anything for his kids and grandkids. Shared his experience, wisdom and love with all. Our family will deeply miss him and always love him, as I’m sure many of you will as well.”

The mark of an actor’s career, I think, is what extent their filmography can reflect the time they’re working. Matthew Modine is a prime case: we can point, first and most easily, to leading a Stanley Kubrick film, a title for which there are fewer living holders than men who’ve walked on the moon; there’s one of the all-time biggest box-office disasters; supporting roles for Christopher Nolan, Robert Altman, Oliver Stone; and aiding auteurs Abel Ferrara and Alan Rudolph as a star. This makes especially appreciable the Roxy Cinema’s retrospective The Many Faces of Matthew Modine, running Friday through Sunday with five films: Ferrara’s The Blackout, Rudolph’s Equinox, Cutthroat Island, Birdy, and his own feature If… Dog… Rabbit…
Having long admired Modine’s screen presence, I was happy to speak with him about this retrospective. But it engendered a longer, deeper conversation about...

Bad Bunny (Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) appeared on the cover of Time in March 2023. In the interview, he discussed “El Apagon,” perhaps his most political song. He made a comment about how he doesn’t feel as strongly now about one of the lines he wrote for the song. The internet reacted in a big way. Recently, the rapper has spoken out about the quotes that got taken out of context.
What Bad Bunny said in the Time interview
Martínez has always sung about Puerto Rican identity and Caribbean culture. In “El Apagon,” or “The Blackout,” the artist references the power outages that have been going on in Puerto Rico since Hurricane Maria. He also touches on the gentrification and displacement that happens on the island.
When he spoke to Time, he said he wrote the line: “Ahora todos quieren ser Latino, pero les falta sazon” because he felt frustrated...

Turnstile returned to late-night TV Monday, performing a high-energy rendition of “Blackout” on The Tonight Show. The multi-segmented song appears on the Baltimore-based band’s latest album, Glow On, which was released to critical acclaim last August.
The performance finds the hardcore punk outfit deftly moving between the track’s unique blend of musical genres — hardcore punk, sludge metal, dance punk and arena rock — with vocalist Brady Ebert even providing additional percussion accompaniment during one portion of the song.

Turnstile returned to late-night Wednesday, delivering a high-octane version of the song “Mystery” on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The track served as the lead single for the group’s critically acclaimed 2021 LP, Glow On, which came in at number 8 on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 50 best albums of the year.
The Baltimore-based punks’ unique brand of hardcore draws from a wide-range of sonic inspirations, channeling everything from experimental pop to electronic dance music. On “Mystery,” however, Turnstile stays true to form, evoking the melodic, emotional-driven sound of post-hardcore pioneers such as Fugazi and Unwound.

It was a big weekend for movies all around as the Super Bowl brought with it a wealth of trailers and TV spots for some of the biggest releases coming our way in 2022. It was also a big, uneven weekend at the box office, with not one but three new studio movies arriving in theaters for audiences to choose from. As it turns out, "Death on the Nile," "Marry Me," and "Blackout" were no match for the big game, and essentially none of them succeeded in the face of the American pastime that is football. Let's dig into the numbers, shall...

Three years after a deadly virus has destroyed much of Earth’s plant life humanity’s fate rests on a pair of alien artefacts uncovered by scientists and kept secret until now. “I don’t really treat them any differently,” editor Myron Kerstein admits about how he approaches his work on movie musicals versus other genres of television and film. As word came in about the death of Melvin Van Peebles, tributes quickly poured in for a “true revolutionary” and a “genius auteur” from filmmakers and actors such as Spike Lee, Barry Jenkins, Ava DuVernay and David Alan Grier.
The godfather of Black cinema, who died in his home on Tuesday night at age 89, was hailed by critics and Hollywood stars as an example an “iconic” figure who inspired countless generations of filmmakers and shaped popular culture years in the future.
“He made the most of every second, of Every single damn frame,” Jenkins said, recalling a meeting with Van Peebles one night many years ago. “The man just absolutely Lived.”
His son, actor-director Mario Van Peebles, also paid tribute. “Dad knew that Black images matter. If a picture is worth a thousand words, what is a movie worth? We want to be the success we see, thus we need to see ourselves being free,...

There’s a casual decadence to the films of Jon M. Chu, an energy about them that is irresistible to watch. Whether the director is indulging in absurd magic tricks, grandiose weddings, riveting action, or exquisitely choreographed and performed song-and-dance numbers, there is an almost effortless extravagance to his work as a filmmaker. Having been suited to spectacle from the get-go, his adaptation of In the Heights is proof that the movie musical isn’t dead––it simply needed a little flavor.
From its opening notes, In the Heights feels like a breath of fresh air, its upbeat first number not just introducing its characters, but inviting viewers to be a part of the community being highlighted. Chu begs the audience to step up and dance along, with the endlessly charismatic Anthony Ramos taking the lead as Usnavi, the film’s narrator and owner of a bodega in Washington Heights.
