In a move reminiscent of Hulu’s latest dealings, BritBox is now coming under the control of a single company.
It’s a little strange to see streaming services that are controlled by more than one company these days. Hulu, for example, is finally in the process of coming under the full ownership of Disney, after years of being split between that company, Fox and Comcast. The journey of BritBox from multiple owners to one has been far swifter, as BBC Studios has announced it has acquired ITV’s 50% stake in the international arm of British-focused streaming platform.
BBC Studios paid $322 million for ITV’s stake in BritBox. Extended licensing agreements will keep ITV content available to stream on Britbox for years to come. A change in ownership could signal big incoming changes for BritBox. 7-Day Free Trial $8.99+ / month BritBox.com

90 days of BritBox for just $9? That’s better than the BritBox Black Friday deal last year. But you have to hurry to get it.

The exec producer behind BBC comedy-drama We Might Regret This has said his ambition was for a show starring and written by a disabled performer to be “at the very top table of creativity.”
The Office and People Just Do Nothing producer Ash Atalla, whose Roughcut TV outfit is making We Might Regret This in association with Village Roadshow Television, said there has been a tendency for British broadcasters to “use the dry slopes of smaller budget shows or ancillary channels as training progams” when it comes to projects led by disabled people.
Penned by Kyla Harris and Lee Getty, We Might Regret This, on the other hand, is being positioned as a bigger-budget primetime offering for the UK’s national broadcaster, which its backers feel could be a potential awards winner.

BritBox is following where the bigger streamers lead. The service, which has grown more than 300% in three years, and at last report had 3 million subscribers, has now risen its price to $8.99 per month, or $89.99 per year. It’s a relatively modest price increase of $1 per month, or $10 per year, but the increase came without a major announcement or press release.

BritBox carries a host of beloved British programming, including dark and brooding detective shows like “Luther,” the more old-school sleuthing of “Father Brown,” or following Hyacinth Bucket from hedge to hedge as she peeks in her neighbors’ windows in “Keeping Up Appearances.”
The good news is that there is still a way for new users to get BritBox at the old price of $7.99 per month. That’s by signing up through Amazon's Prime Video Channels, which still offers BritBox at $7.99 per month after a seven-day free trial.

There’s never been a better year to be a David Tennant fan – the man’s the very definition of “booked and busy”.
You could have been forgiven for thinking he’d had a pretty unbeatable year back in 2005, when (among other things) he starred in two of that year’s biggest TV and film successes, both beginning his tenure as the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who and playing Barty Crouch Jr in Harry Potter and The Goblet Of Fire.
But almost 20 years later, Tennant’s demand has only continued growing, so much so that these days it’s almost easier to list the blockbuster shows and franchises that don’t involve David Tennant.
Add to that acting roles for Georgia Tennant, his wife, and three of their five children (so far!), and there’s a whole smorgasbord of Tennant talent on offer.
Let’s take a look at what...

Hallmark Channel’s new series The Way Home doesn’t hold back when it comes to ‘90s nostalgia. In the multi-generational family drama, a present-day teen named Alice (Sadie Laflamme-Snow) discovers that she has the ability to time-travel back to the late 1990s, when her mother Kat (played by Chyler Leigh as an adult and Alex Hook as a teen) was in high school. Aside from the era-appropriate fashion and nods to dial-up internet and movies like The Blair Witch Project, the show also references the decade in its episode titles.

We’re only partway through the first season of The Way Home, but the show is making its commitment to the ‘90s theme clear in its episode titles. Three of the four episodes that have aired so far reference popular songs from the late 1990s.

David Tennant’s transformation into serial killer Dennis Nilsen for ITV’s Des was unsettlingly convincing. It wasn’t just the physical resemblance, though under that hairstyle and behind those 1980s glasses frames, the similarity was remarkable. It was also the posture, the unwavering eye contact, and the voice; mumbling and unconcerned, listing the terrible details of Nilsen’s crimes as if reciting a recipe instead of multiple brutal murders.
As Nilsen, Tennant pulled off what every actor hopes to in a real-life role – a disappearing trick. He slid clean inside the role, leaving no trace of The Doctor, or Simon from There She Goes, or the demon Crowley, or Alec Hardy, or his funny, self-deprecating public persona. For those three hours on screen, he was nothing but Nilsen.
The role is one in a long line of on-screen psychopaths for Tennant. He might be best loved around these parts as excitable,...

Writer Shaun Pye’s Facebook posts led to the eventual creation of a BAFTA award-winning television series.
Pye and his wife Sarah Crawford serve as writers for the U.K. television series “There She Goes,” which is based on their experiences raising a child with a chromosomal disorder. The central storyline follows the Yates family, made up of Simon (David Tennant), his wife Emily (Jessica Hynes) and their children Ben (Edan Hayhurst) and Rosie (Miley Locke), who has a chromosome disorder that limits her development.
Tennant and Hynes, joined Pye and Crawford in the Variety Streaming Room, moderated by Variety senior editor Michael Schneider, for a conversation about the show’s first two seasons. The panel included discussions on the show’s origins, dual narrative and reception as a case study in parenting.

BBC and ITV-backed streamer BritBox is finalizing plans that will see the service roll out to 25 countries worldwide, with the footprint expanding across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, South America and Africa.
This will build upon the service’s success in the U.S. and Canada, where it has surpassed one million subscribers. The platform launched in the U.K. in November, and will be available in Australia later this year.
It’s still unclear exactly what additional countries BritBox will target.
BritBox has a large collection of U.K. programming, including “Shetland,” “Vera,” “Coronation Street” and “EastEnders.” The service has also launched co-productions such as “The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco,” “The Mallorca Files,” “There She Goes” and “The Bay.” Last week, the service announced a raft of original commissions, including “A Spy Among Friends” (Sony & ITV Studios), “The Beast Must Die” (New Regency Television and Scott Free), “Crime...

When the first series of Shaun Pye and Sarah Crawford’s autobiographically inspired comedy-drama aired, they were prepared for a mixed reaction. Their dramatisation of life raising a severely learning disabled child would likely shock, cause discomfort, and – in these furious days of gladiatorial online parenting forums – almost certainly provoke judgment and criticism. What they weren’t necessarily expecting were stories about poo.
“The most common reaction from parents or siblings with a child similar to Jo [Sarah and Simon’s learning disabled daughter on whom the character of Rosie, played by Miley Locke, is based] is they’ll come up and say ‘Saw the show, loved the show’ and then start telling me funny stories.” Faecal hijinks, outrageous incidents and family code words… “They can’t wait to tell me,” says Pye speaking at the series two press launch. “They just want to start talking about their children in a joyous, celebratory way, but also, not.”
The “also, not” of it all is the...

Among the shows coming to the service are “A Confession,” an original drama from Jeff Pope, starring Martin Freeman (“Sherlock”) and Imelda Staunton (“Vera Drake”), about divergent paths to justice for two women when the confession of a violent criminal is ruled inadmissible; the six-part mystery series “Wild Bill,” starring Rob Lowe; “Sister Boniface,” about a crime-solving nun, a spin-off of the mystery series “Father Brown”; a co-production with ITV from Mammoth Screen, “McDonald and Dodds,” about a pair of mismatched police detectives, starring Jason Watkins; and Mike Bartlett’s three-part psychological thriller “Sticks and Stones,” starring Ken Nwosu.

BritBox president Soumya Sriraman has said she is relaxed about the arrival of Apple to the streaming wars.
Speaking at the International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam on Friday, Sriraman said she is not worried about being undercut by Apple TV+ when it launches on November 1.
Apple TV+ will be keenly priced at $4.99 a month — two dollars cheaper than BritBox, which is available in the Us and Canada for $6.99 a month.
“I’m not worried,” Sriraman said, adding that Apple has not announced many shows. It suggests that BritBox thinks that its deeper library of content could still give it the edge for consumers.
Apple revealed this week that Apple TV+ will launch with nine originals, including Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston-produced The Morning Show, Jason Momoa’s See, and documentary The Elephant Queen. It will have few archive shows and films, however.

Phoebe Waller Bridge’s slinky thriller “Killing Eve” made its mark at the BAFTA TV Awards on May 12, taking home three prizes, including drama series, lead actress for Jodie Comer and supporting actress for Fiona Shaw.
Now airing its second season on BBC America, the series centers around a bored spy played by Sandra Oh who gets drawn into a game of cat-and-mouse with Comer’s obsessive contract killer.
The win is a significant boost for Comer, whose performance in Season 1 was often overshadowed by Oh’s, resulting in both a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for the latter.
HBO’s “Succession” also got a boost in its Emmy campaign, taking home the BAFTA for international series, edging out last year’s winner, Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.”
