The Edinburgh Film Festival’s Midnight Madness strand will close with the body horror The Substance, starring Demi Moore.
Still riding the wave of a nine-minute standing ovation in Cannes, Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance also features Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid in a thriller that doubles as a ruthless satire on female body standards and the toxic beauty myth.
The U.K. premiere of The Substance will screen at Eiff on Aug. 20, with further theatrical release details to be announced by Mubi soon. The full program for the event, taking place Aug. 15-20, will launch on July 10.
Paul Ridd, Eiff director, said: “Having experienced the legendary Midnight Madness premiere of Coralie Fargeat’s ferocious debut Revenge at Toronto a few years back, I am truly honored that our first ever Midnight Madness strand at Eiff will close out with her wildly entertaining second film The Substance. Set in the outskirts of Paris, Rodeo explores the underground passion for bike-life gatherings and racing. Into this heavily masculine world comes a young female rider, who ultimately joins a gang and climbs its ranks as she plans a dangerous heist to test the group’s ambition and skill. While filming The Outrun, Saoirse Ronan delivered lambs, swam with seals and communed with her fair share of flora and fauna.
The four-time Oscar nominee plays Rona, a young woman who leaves London and returns to her small hometown on Scotland’s Orkney Islands as she charts her course to sobriety while experiencing all the harsh realities and natural wonders that a tiny, wind-swept isle off the coast of Scotland has to offer.
The film, directed by German helmer Nora Fingscheidt (System Crasher) and based on the Amy Liptrot novel of the same name, will screen in Berlin following its premiere at Sundance, where it garnered rave reviews (THR’s David Rooney observed that Ronan “puts herself through the physical and emotional wringer”). “The Outrun,” the story of a 29-year-old Scottish woman in the throes of, and recovery from (though not necessarily in that order), an increasingly desperate alcoholism, is a drama with a lot of things going for it. It stars Saoirse Ronan, a great actor who, no one will be surprised to hear, lives inside this role as if she’d occupied it her whole life. The film is based on Amy Liptrot’s 2017 addiction memoir (the heroine is now named Rona), and the German director Nora Fingscheidt (“System Crasher”) adapts it in a somber, meditative, structurally free-form way that’s all about broken surfaces and moods of fragmentation and despair (and mutating dyed hair).
Much of the movie is set on the Orkney Islands, a remote archipelago located in the Northern Isles of Scotland and steeped in folklore. This gorgeously severe landscape — the black rocks, the waves, the end-of-the-earth barrenness...

I saved the best for last and it was entirely worth the wait. My very last in-person screening (after 30 other films) at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival ended up being my favorite film of the entire festival. It may even end up on my Top 10 at the end of the year. The Outrun is the latest film from talented German filmmaker Nora Fingscheidt, best known for her German film System Crasher from 2019. This time she's adapting a book from Scottish writer Amy Liptrot, telling a story about a young woman in Scotland trying to figure out her chaotic life. It's everything great cinema is about - all of the elements of filmmaking integrated perfectly together to bring us into the life of Rona as she returns to the Orkney Islands to calm herself and work on her addiction to alcohol. It's always hard to tell before watching a film whether it...

Floating 10 miles beyond the tip of Great Britain like a barren moon that’s been anchored to the rest of the world by a rusty chain running beneath the North Sea, the Orkney Islands are a place so primordial and extreme that even the scientists who live there fall back on folklore to explain it. Maybe the silent tremors that vibrate through the land are caused by the impact of ocean water crashing into underwater caves — but it seems just as plausible that they might be produced by a buried dragon the size of the entire world unfurling its massive tail. Maybe the poor souls who drown off the coast are truly lost and gone forever, but on this blustery archipelago — where the winter breeze can only be measured in scenes from “King Lear” — it doesn’t seem too far-fetched to believe that the dead turn into adorable selkies who...

Channing Tatum has been set to star in the remake of the German feature ‘System Crasher’ at MGM.
The original German film centres on a young girl with a traumatic past. Constantly moving from one child-services home to the next because of her aggressive behaviour, she’s labelled a “system crasher” and seen as a hopeless cause. That’s until she gets paired with a caring but tough anger-management coach. They form an unlikely bond, and he helps her find peace by reconnecting her with nature and also nurturing her passion for boxing.
The remake will be set in the U.S. and look to focus on childhood trauma, and healing.

Sandra Bullock plays a newly released Washington State ex-con trying to pick up where she left off 20 years earlier in “The Unforgivable” — no easy task, particularly since her character remains branded a cop-killer pariah. Working in English, German director Nora Fingscheidt’s second narrative feature (following Berlin prize-winner “System Crasher”) is adapted from a 2009 miniseries by esteemed U.K. TV scribe Sally Wainwright. The story translates well enough in cultural terms, though its density of plot elements ends up feeling more contrived in this compressed feature format.
Nevertheless, the producer-star’s first vehicle since “Bird Box” in 2018 is a sturdy drama-cum-thriller that should prove another Netflix hit, albeit one unlikely to reproduce that film’s flukish cultural-cachet buzz. It opens in limited U.S. theaters the day before Thanksgiving, then launches worldwide on the streamer Dec. 10.

It’s no surprise that Nora Fingscheidt’s “The Unforgivable” is based on a British miniseries, as this Sandra Bullock ex-con drama about a woman released into the merciless cold of Snohomish, Wisconsin, after a 20-year murder stint is gray enough to seem like it still has one foot planted in Yorkshire. What is surprising, however, is that the ITV show had a cumulative runtime of only 135 minutes, a curious factoid when you consider that Fingscheidt’s version — a Netflix movie which runs just 21 minutes shorter than its source material — is so patchy and spread thin that you’d sooner guess it was trimmed down from a sprawling eight-hour epic.
“The Unforgivable” could have been a beat-for-beat remake of the original without any significant difference to its budget or distribution, and yet

A strong cast and tightly focused direction make The Unforgivable an engrossing enough redemption drama, though this Americanized feature adaptation of British TV writer Sally Wainwright’s 2009 miniseries, Unforgiven, doesn’t always benefit from its condensed plotting. A deglammed Sandra Bullock headlines as Ruth Slater, an ex-con attempting to find a quiet place in the free world, who wants only to reconnect with her younger sister after serving 20 years for a violent crime. Following her Berlinale prize winner System Crasher, German director Nora Fingscheidt makes a respectable English-language debut with this somber look at the ripple effects of trauma.
