- Musa is an idealist Ottoman captain at First World War, Caucasian Front at 1917. He is only survivor of recent battle with a gun wound and he takes refuge to a mountain hut. While he was searching the area, he sees a lost Russian captain and they start a gun fight. As it expected, he defeats the enemy and wants to finish him.The moment he directs his gun to finish him, he sees his scarred eyes and can not kill him. He leaves him wounded at the middle of area. While returning to his hut he hears the wolves and realizes the wilderness of mountain steep. His conscience makes him carry the wounded Viktor inside the hut.Musa is now in paradox.
Viktor wakes up and can not understand why Musa is tending his wound. Viktor also falls in an emotional paradox. He starts to question himself. This questioning is not an answer toward Musa's attitude towards him but rather an answer that he wants to give contradiction to his inner world.
The unavoidable dialogue between Musa and Viktor stems from keeping the military honors but also reflects their personal feelings and ideals. They both have not avoided expressing the war's justice in terms of their individual sides.
Musa 's attitude towards Viktor walks through between his humanistic emotions and feelings of being superior due to capturing Viktor.Being captured makes Viktor closer to talk about beyond the realities of war Although Viktor starts questioning the meaning of the war since it is taking place between the people with same beliefs and roots; Musa does not show any apparent weakness on this issue with the honor of being bound to high ideals. Nevertheless this approach of Viktor pushes Musa to metaphor. The inner world tells of the silence of Musa. Musa strikes out the emotional change with a question he asked by way of his wife's picture in Viktor's wallet. Viktor expresses his feelings towards war through his father's faith in peace. To express this directly to an enemy soldier, which is very difficult for an officer; Musa shows his acceptance by this indirect expression in a hot cup of soup given to the captive Viktor.
Something is changing. Viktor asks him his name. This moment is the turning point of the story. This question sent them to a direction which none of them know where it will take them. They know that the only reality of the war is the number of the soldiers and no soldier has a name. The dialogue between them continues; somewhat cynical, and sincere. Expressing subdued emotions gives Musa relaxation and he passes out. This creates an opportunity to escape for Viktor but his conscience does not let him to do it. Musa wakes up by Viktor's calling and realizes the realities of the war. His facial expression shows that he is wishing the war were a nightmare until he sees Viktor's anxious but calm waiting.
Viktor realizes that Musa is hurt. Even he accepts himself as a prisoner of the war, he feels the similarities of emotions and hurt between them. With this feelings he tells Musa that he is a writer. Musa asks him what kind of writer he is with maze. While Viktor tells how people fight in a war without believing in,Musa touches his wound. While feeling his pain, Musa, first time blurts out his dilemma on purpose of war. Viktor is pleased with his comments but the gun shot sounds pulls them in the realities of the war.
The next day, Viktor wakes up but can not see Musa in the hut. Now on, breathe of war is getting closer to both of them. He hears the gun shots and stumbles to outside. He sees his soldiers and running Musa. He gets a sudden urge to transform to Captain Viktor and wants to call his soldiers. At that moment, Musa gets shot and falls to ground. That moment was so familiar for him; he feels like someone inside of him also shot. He feels the real face of war in his veins, he looses all his hope for the peace. The life became meaningless for him. His losses his senses and froze. After waiting in frozen state, and the soldiers are gone; he carries Musa inside the hut. Nothing was like before. He calls Musa with his name. Now on, soldiers have a name in this war.
