The future of "Star Wars" recently came into focus as Disney and Lucasfilm announced the movie that will welcome a galaxy far, far away back to the big screen. Oddly enough, it's going to be centered on the characters that have helped anchor "Star Wars" on the small screen since 2019. "The Mandalorian & Grogu" will be directed by Jon Favreau, with the film set to go into production in 2024. Indeed, it will be Mando and the one they call Baby Yoda who will help bring the franchise back to theaters after years away. One big question now looms very large: Will a TV show turned into a movie translate to meaningful box office dollars?
There are far too many unknowns right now to accurately predict this movie's commercial performance, but there are some key things we do know. For one, "The Mandalorian" has been extremely popular, with Pedra Pascal's Din Djarin...

The National and Phoebe Bridgers are cracking up to stave off falling apart in the new animated music video for their recent collaboration, “Laugh Track.”
The video was directed and animated by Bernard Derriman, who recently helmed The Bob’s Burgers Movie. In it, a couple sit down for a grave conversation but are soon overwhelmed by a rising tide of chuckling faces. Before the couple nearly drowns in bleak hilarity, however, they launch into the sky, escaping the deluge and eventually landing back at the table for a clear-eyed conversation.

Further proof that time is a flat circle: “Rick and Morty” is getting back to basics in Season 7.
Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland began Adult Swim’s flagship animated series as a searingly cynical “Back to the Future” homage in 2013, introducing audiences to an alcoholic scientist and his 14-year-old grandson through mostly self-contained episodes. Over the decade that followed, Harmon’s world-building smarts combined with Roiland’s knack for character design to create a sweeping multi-verse of interlocking plots that upped the ante across adult cartoons.
The show also fostered an infamously toxic workplace and lead to a painful split between the creators. Overly long hours, unwanted sexual advances, and a hostile creative process plagued the writers room with Roiland becoming an increasingly aloof and unpredictable presence past Season 4. Now, in the wake of the animator’s ousting (Roiland continues to deny numerous sexual abuse and grooming allegations), it seems...

What’s the biggest TV event happening on March 12? Some might say the Oscars ceremony, while others might point to the season finale of “The Last of Us”. But Fox is giving both a run for their money with their newest episode of “Family Guy,” which will see the raunchy animated program stage a three-way crossover with its Fox channel brethren “The Simpsons” and “Bob’s Burgers”
“Family Guy” previously crossed over with “The Simpsons” in 2014 during the show’s Season 13 premiere “The Simpsons Guy,” but this is the first time that the two series’ younger Fox sibling “Bob’s Burgers” is getting added to the mix. However, unlike “The Simpsons Guy” — an extra-long 44-minute extravaganza for the two rival shows — the upcoming episode (titled “Adoption”) doesn’t appear to focus on the interplay between the three shows, instead featuring characters from “The Simpsons” and “Bob’s Burgers” in a scene released by...

Zach Galifianakis has been cast in Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch” feature, TheWrap has confirmed. We’ve heard he will be playing Pleakley, the alien character originally voiced by Kevin McDonald and animated by Ruben A. Aquino.
Dean Fleischer Camp, the Oscar-nominated director of last year’s “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On,” will be directing the new adaptation. Originally, Jon M. Chu was on board to direct but exited in 2020; that version of the movie had a script by Mike Van Waes. It’s unclear if that version of the screenplay will be utilized for this version. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who produced the live-action “Aladdin” for Disney (which grossed more than 1 billion worldwide), are aboard as producers.
The original film, released in 2002, was written and directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois. The film followed an extraterrestrial experiment (voiced by Sanders) who escapes his cosmic prison...

The “Lilo & Stich” live-action remake is assembling its Ohana. Zach Galifankis has been cast in the upcoming Disney+ film, IndieWire has confirmed.
Details of Galifanakis’ character is being kept under wraps, so it’s unclear if the “Hangover” star will be playing a live-action character, or if he’s voicing a CGI character such as the lovable Stitch himself. Because the original animated film centered primarily on Native Hawaiian characters, Galifanakis will likely be playing either a new character for the film or one of the aliens in the cast, like Stitch, antagonist Captain Gantu, or a member of the iconic odd couple Jumba and Pleakly.
The beloved original animated film focuses on Lilo, a young girl struggling after the death of their parents. When she encounters Stitch, a bizarre dog-like creature created by an alien scientist to be the ultimate destructive force, Lilo adopts the stray and brings it...

Hand-drawn, 2D cel animation is hard. It's labor-intensive and time-consuming and the leading cause of death for pencils. Who knows, that last bit might even be true. Despite its difficulty, however, there are plenty of artists who still gravitate toward the medium. 3D CGI animation might be readily available in 2023 but for some, it just doesn't capture that same magic.
Loren Bouchard, the creative mind behind "Bob's Burgers," an ongoing 2D animated series, told Looper during an exclusive interview that the medium is, "by definition, somewhat more minimal." Bouchard explained, "It doesn't have to be simple, but it's reducing the world to a line drawing with some color. It's a fascinating process." He noted that CGI incorporates a true perspective of reality, and while he respects and enjoys CG animated films, he hopes that "the art and craft of 2D animation, especially at that higher level, that theatrical level," continues on.

Fox is once again committing to its long-running animation block: the network has just renewed "Family Guy," "The Simpsons," and "Bob's Burgers" for two more seasons a piece, according to Variety.
The news comes as little surprise for fans of Matt Groening's decades-old animated sitcom "The Simpsons," as the show has been the longest-running scripted series in TV history for years now. This fall, the show will premiere its 35th season, and the series impressively still features the same original core cast that's been voicing the Simpsons family since 1989.
"Family Guy," meanwhile, also seems to be trucking along after surviving a previous cancelation early in its run. Seth MacFarlane's bawdy adult comedy now has the go-ahead to continue for its 22nd and 23rd seasons. MacFarlane's other adult animated series, "American Dad!" is currently on a different renewal cycle over on TBS network, and it already got the green...

It's hard to imagine the current landscape of television without "Bob's Burgers." Just like the animated classics "The Simpsons," "Family Guy," and "King of the Hill" before them, the show created by Loren Bouchard has become a staple of the Fox network's weekly lineup since 2011. The Emmy-winning series starring H. Jon Benjamin, John Roberts, Dan Mintz, Eugene Mirman, and Kristen Schaal as the offbeat yet lovable Belcher family has also extended its reach even further through reruns via syndication and streaming on Hulu.
However, the Belchers' future wasn't always as stable as their current reputation would lead you to believe. Long before Bouchard's team created over 200 episodes filled with creative burgers and catchy songs, the people working on the show about this eccentric family living in a coastal town were worried that it wouldn't stay on the airwaves very long after the first season. Even after the original premise involving cannibalism was scrapped,...

2022 saw the return of theatrical cinema. From "Everything Everywhere All at Once" and "Avatar: The Way of Water" to "The Batman" and "The Fabelmans," the message Hollywood wanted to send was loud and clear: movies are back and they're really, really good. Among these many wonderful entries into the universal film catalogue was "The Bob's Burgers Movie," which cashed in on every ounce of the TV series' charm to deliver one of the many phenomenal animated stories that 2022 had to offer.
Created by Loren Bouchard and co-written by Bouchard and Nora Smith, "The Bob's Burgers Movie" saw almost the entire main voice cast of the TV series return for the silver screen, including H. Jon Benjamin, who voices Bob Belcher, the titular restaurateur and exhausted patriarch of the Belcher family. For better or for worse, there's a lot of turnover in the world of television. While it can happen onscreen occasionally, as we recently saw with Henry Cavill in "The Witcher," this especially applies behind the scenes. Almost every day there's news about shows adding new writers or swapping showrunners. For example, after a tumultuous first season on Netflix under the guidance of Scott Buck, Marvel's "Iron Fist" rebounded with a better (but overall still not great) second season helmed by Raven Metzner before getting canceled. Speaking of shows based on beloved comic book characters, the adaptation of Robert Kirkman's "The Walking Dead" on AMC had four different showrunners over the course of their eleven-season run. Luckily for them, only one of those instances resulted in a lawsuit (which was eventually settled outside of court).
But if the major creative forces of a writers' room get to stay together...

As someone who only got into "Bob's Burgers" within the past year, it was wonderful to see the Belchers make the leap to the big screen with "The Bob's Burgers Movie." Unfortunately, the film underperformed at the box office, raking in about 34 million against a 38 million budget, which means that any chance of a sequel, at least theatrically, has probably been nipped in the bud. It's a shame, really, as the 2022 feature, while certainly flawed, settled in nicely among the other animated feature adaptations such as "The Simpsons Movie" and "Beavis and Butt-Head Do America."
What "The Bob's Burgers Movie" lacked in a consistent musical rhythm, it made up for with a delightful and hilarious hometown adventure with Bob (H. Jon Benjamin), Linda (John Roberts), Tina (Dan Mintz), Gene (Eugene Mirman), and Louise (Kristen Schaal). Where some feature adaptations would take the main characters out of their local environment, this...

These are curious days for feature animation. Netflix scaled back its plans in the arena, while two years of releases straight to Disney+ during Covid and under Bob Chapek seem to have seriously devalued the once unstoppable Disney/Pixar animation empire. Universal, though, enjoyed one of the biggest hits ever with the near 1 billion juggernaut “Minions: The Rise of Gru” and also landed the year’s second-biggest animated release with “The Bad Guys.”
Still, animation at the box office and animation in the awards race are two very different things, and it’s unlikely that Academy voters will be checking the grosses as they review the 27 qualifying films in this year’s Best Animated Feature race at the Oscars.
Those 27 include movies from big, traditional studios like Disney/Pixar, Universal’s DreamWorks Animation, Warner Bros. and 20th Century (now part of Disney) – but also a handful of international productions from GKids,...

I spend far too much time agonizing over my end-of-year lists. Perhaps it's because I've been chronically online since I was a teenager and my brain chemistry has been irreparably damaged by being inundated with unsolicited opinions by thousands of strangers. Or, more likely, it's because I love movies so much and not including a title makes feelings of guilt completely wash over me. As was the case with the previous two years, I spent a lot of time indoors and consuming as much media as possible to distract myself from the overwhelming anxiety that the world was falling apart. Luckily, 2022 was a banger year for film and television, and there was an abundance of incredible entertainment.
Before diving into my end-of-year favorites, I want to point out that thanks to a ridiculous distribution issue, "Dinner in America" was my favorite film for the second year in a row. However,...

Characters on our favorite shows are everything.
It's the stories each character brings to the table which can be the difference between a show's success or its failure.
We believe that the best new characters of 2022, found below, have kicked the entertainment quotient of their respective shows up a notch.
Do you agree?

The holidays are here, Oscar voters. What are you going to watch?
At this point in the calendar, the answer could almost be “everything” – but maybe not everywhere, and definitely not all at once. The Academy Screening Room, the members-only portal where studios can place their films to be viewed by voters, has 178 films as of the beginning of Christmas week, including every major Best Picture contender except for a pair of three-hour epics only recently unveiled, Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” and James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water.”
Those films, which beg to be seen on the largest and loudest screen possible, have yet to be added to the Academy Screening Room, a placement that costs 20,000 (albeit with a discount available to lower-budget productions). But while the Asr got off to a slow start this year, the other contenders are all now available for members to view, even...

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced the list of eligible films for the animated, documentary and international feature categories for this year’s 95th Oscars. Among the films in the running are Amazon’s documentary “Good Night Oppy,” Netflix’s German remake “All Quiet on the Western Front” and Apple’s animated collaboration with Skydance, “Luck.”
Both major and independent studios are well represented across the board. A24 is going forth with confidence after its NYFCC win for animated gem “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On,” which qualified for consideration. Documentaries are littered with harrowing stories from Neon (“All the Beauty and the Bloodshed”), Sony Pictures Classics (“Turn Every Page – The Adventures of Robert Caro and Robert Gottlieb”) and IFC Films (“Bad Axe”).

In the early days of the Academy’s animated feature Oscar, there were questions as to whether enough films would qualify each year for the award to be given. Not anymore! This year sees a record number of contenders across a wide variety of genres, styles and audiences, from serious, adult-targeted films (like “Charlotte” and “Eternal Spring”) to boffo offerings from Hollywood’s top toon studios — and that doesn’t even count such anime franchise sensations as “One Piece Film: Red” and “Jujutsu Kaisen 0,” which didn’t submit but further illustrate the vitality of the form.

Jordan Peele's meteoric ascent in the film industry has landed him squarely on the map as one of the rare figures -- alongside proven talents such as Christopher Nolan, M. Night Shyamalan, and a select few others -- who's able to bring in audiences to original genre movies by virtue of their name alone. But Peele's actual directing work really only scratches the surface of what he brings to the table. In addition to lending his voice to animated movies like "Wendell & Wild" and "The Bob's Burgers Movie," he's also used his considerable influence to set up his own production company and help get several other projects off the ground.
By now, seeing the evocative logo of Monkeypaw Productions before his and other movies has become a familiar sight, conjuring images of the famous horror short story about the mystical item that grants wishes... at a cost. For Peele,...

When it comes to narrative continuity, animated television is in a realm of all its own. Time moves differently in animated sitcoms — if it does move at all — but once a show like "Bob's Burgers" or "The Simpsons" starts racking up seasons in the double digits, the concept of time is pretty much a non-entity. Still, that doesn't stop fans from wondering how things work. Are the characters of "Bob's Burgers" trapped in a time loop? Are they immortal? And what about its recently released film? Is "The Bob's Burgers Movie" a prequel? Is it meant to fit into the series continuity at all? Is it even canon?!
The answer, according to series creator Loren Bouchard, is probably a bit more complicated than anyone might have thought — but, just like the series, it's still fun to think about.

Exclusive: Ireland’s Lighthouse Studios is developing its first original series, Savage Town.
The 2D-animated crime drama is based on a graphic novel co-authored by Marvel comic book artist Declan Shalvey and Philip Barrett, along with colorist Jordie Bellaire. Marcus Fleming, who wrote Dominion Creek for Ireland’s TG4 and Netflix UK and political drama The Running Mate, is Head Writer.
Savage Town is loosely based on real events in Ireland at the turn of the 21st century during a period of economic growth known as the Celtic Tiger, which transformed it from one of Western Europe’s poorer countries into one of its wealthiest. It follows one local gangster who sees an opportunity to make a major play to control the city but finds himself trapped between two rival gangs with the same intention.

"The Simpsons Movie" may have made the joke about paying to see something you get on television for free, but there's a certain thrill that comes with seeing one of your favorite shows make the transfer to the big screen. I may have hopped aboard almost a decade into its run, but I adore "Bob's Burgers" and all of the delightfully weird characters of Seymour's Bay. I think it's safe to say that the Belchers have earned their place among the great sitcom families, especially since Bob and Lina actually nurture their children's idiosyncrasies.
Seymour's Bay is structured like a summer town so it makes sense to turn the animated sitcom into a summer blockbuster to compliment the series' sunny aesthetic. I really enjoyed "The Bob's Burgers Movie," for the most part, as it stands by its characters while exploring beyond familiar environments and all of the secrets within. At its center,...

Against the eventful corporate backdrop of Warner Bros Discovery trimming expenses and trying to convince Wall Street of its strategy, the company is offering limited-term discounts on streaming service HBO Max for both new and existing subscribers.
Anyone signing up for a full-year plan by October 30 will pay 104.99 for the ad-free tier and 69.99 for the ad-supported one, a 30 savings compared with the going rates of 149.99 and 99.99. Compared with month-to-month pricing, which always runs higher than the year-at-a-time rate, the savings reach 42. The deal is only for the first year and must be ordered through the HBO Max website or via distribution partners Roku, Google Play, Apple, and Amazon.
The lower prices are timed with the long-awaited rollout of Game of Thrones spinoff series House of the Dragon, which debuts this week.

Choosing which episode of “Bob’s Burgers” will be submitted for the Emmys each year is a tough task for creator and executive producer Loren Bouchard. This year the show has submitted “Some Like it Bot Part 1: Eighth Grade Runner.” “We really took a bigger chance. Not every episode will be as big and cinematic as this one, but we wanted to come off of the ‘Bob’s’ movie and bring cinematic storytelling to the series but in a way that also was organic,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above). The episode sees Tina using her “erotic friend fiction” to escape from reality in a “Blade Runner” setting after Tammy and Jocelyn make fun of her new shirt. “The production team killed themselves to make the shots gorgeous. So we submitted it to celebrate the work that everyone did on it.”

According to CEO Bob Chapek, Disney had an “excellent” fiscal third quarter. He’s a bit biased, sure, but we cannot argue with the numbers.
Disney+ ended Q3 with 152.1 million overall streaming subscribers, up from 137.7 million on April 2, 2022. Compare that with the 220.7 million subs Netflix reported at the end of the same quarter. Keep that Netflix number handy for a moment.
ESPN+ now has 22.8 million subs, up from 22.3 million three months ago. Hulu reported having 46.2 million subscribers, up from 45.6 million in Q2 2022. Of those, 42 million are straight-up Hulu SVOD; 4 million have elected to add Hulu’s Live TV service.
Adding all three services up, Disney has a grand total of 221.1 total streaming subscribers. Yes, combined the individual services making up the Disney Bundle just surpassed Netflix in overall global subscribers.
Here, we’ll point out that Hulu is still the only one of the Bundle that makes money. However, its...

Even after 12 seasons of the Emmy-nominated series, Bob’s Burgers and creator Loren Bouchard show no sign of slowing down. In May of this year, Bouchard and his team released their feature length film The Bob’s Burgers Movie, which they have been working on simultaneously along with the series. Bouchard says the movie inspired them to “take bigger swings” in season 12, resulting in a two part finale, with the first part “Some Like It Bot Part 1: Eighth Grade Runner” being submitted for Emmy consideration. The series is nominated for the Outstanding Animated Program Emmy this year, totaling 13 nomination and two wins since the series premiered in 2011.
Deadline: Why was “Some Like It Bot Part 1: Eighth Grade Runner” chosen for Emmy consideration?
Loren Bouchard: It had a lot of passion in it. All of our episodes have all of our passion in them, but this one was a real passionate project.

Named for the TV show named for the eponymous restaurant named for its owner, The Bob's Burgers Movie feels like an extended episode. That might seem like damning with faint praise, but as a fan of the show myself it hit the spot nicely.
The challenge of taking an animated sitcom that usually runs some 22 minutes and stretching it to nearly five times that length isn't an easy one, The Simpsons Movie had similar struggles. Well, not similar struggles, there's no dome over the Wonder Wharf, but events are similarly hermetic. The Simpsons are now at 34 series, 731 episodes, Bob's Burgers are at 13 and 238 or so. The latter hasn't yet experienced the discontinuities of running for three decades, it's been observed that Bart's original birth year is now before Homer's.

Universal rules this week. “Jurassic World: Dominion” and “The Black Phone” (both 19.99) are first and second respectively on three current VOD Top 10 charts. They also have 10 of 30 total slots (including “The Northman”/5.99 from Focus). And they accomplished this with minimal damage to their new releases’ box office take for the weekend.
They also defied what might have been a logical instinct to separate their releases so as not to compete with each other. Studios, even when there were far more theatrical releases than currently, virtually never would debut new wide titles the same week.
Per standard Universal policy, “Jurassic World,” with an opening weekend of over 50 million, got home availability after its fifth weekend. “Black Phone,” though a strong performer with 72 million, was released after its third, like most Universal titles. At the midway point of 2022, it seems difficult to imagine how “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (A24/Lionsgate) wouldn’t be figuring heavily in best-of lists and award chatter come December. The sophomore feature from The Daniels (“Swiss Army Man”) mixes genres and metaphysics with heart and soul to create a hard-to-describe but easy-to-love masterpiece, one that’s not quite like anything else you’ve ever seen. Moving, funny, exciting, mind-bending and always giving you something to look at — including extraordinary performances from Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu and Jamie Lee Curtis — this is a one-of-a-kind film that will reward repeat viewings (and a deep dive into the extras on the DVD and Blu-ray).
Also available:
“The Bob’s Burgers Movie” (20th Century Studios): There’s a mystery to solve, a sinkhole to fill, and a restaurant to save in the first big-screen outing for the long-running Fox animated sitcom.

The latest film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: Love and Thunder debuted atop the box-office weekend, beating the second-place film by nearly 100 million.
Thor: Love and Thunder easily took over the box-office as it opened to 143.0 million, giving the God of Thunder his bigest opening at the box-office to date. In a very distant second-place was last weekend’s top film, Minions: The Rise of Gru, which brought in 45.6 million over the weekend to raise its overall total to 210.1 million. Similarly being pushed down a spot was Top Gun: Maverick which dropped to third place in its seventh week of release with 15.5 million over the weekend and an overall total of 597.4 million. Also getting lowered a peg by the God of Thunder was the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll as Elvis finished in fourth place with 11.0 million. The latest film to feature the adventures of the Minions, titled Minions: The Rise of Gru debuted atop the top ten with 125.2 million over the four-day holiday weekend. This pushed Top Gun: Maverick to a very distant second-place finish at 33.0 million, though the film can still fall back on its six-week total of 571.5 million. As it did to Top Gun the debut of The Rise of Gru also pushed Elvis from second place to an even more distant third place with 23.5 million. This gives the Elvis Presley biography a two-week total of 71.8 million. Finishing in fourth place was the sequel Jurassic World Dominion with 19.7 million, which raises the film’s four-week total to 335.9 million.

With its list of new releases for July 2022, HBO Max is stepping up its TV game. Not that any entity associated with “It’s Not TV, It’s HBO” would ever not bring the televised goods, but the small screen is of particular consequence this month.
The middle of July is jam-packed with TV goodies like docuseries The Anarchists (July 10), rescued animated project Tuca & Bertie season 3 (July 11), and the latest Nathan Fielder creation The Rehearsal (July 15). The real heavy hitter arrives later on though. Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin premieres on July 28 and will introduce the next generation of the Pll franchise. It doesn’t have a release date yet but July will also host season 3 of the delightful Harley Quinn at some point.
HBO Max’s movie offerings aren’t as deep this month. The Bob’s Burgers Movie (July 12) and We Met In Virtual Reality (July 27) are really the only originals of note.

In case you were keeping track, the fifth film in the Despicable Me franchise is a sequel to 2015’s Minions, which was itself a prequel to the first two films in the series. It’s a testament to Hollywood’s commitment to recycling, and certainly understandable in light of the series’ blockbuster status. Minions: The Rise of Gru gives fans more of what they’ve come to expect, mainly Gru acting evilly, the Minions acting stupidly, and enough clever gags that will fly over its target audiences’ heads but keep their adult chaperones from dozing off.
Not that sleeping would be possible, considering that this entry is the most frenetic and action-packed of the bunch. Parents may want to consider taking their tykes early in the day, since they may be so revved up after seeing it that bedtime could become contentious.

After ceding the top spot of the box-office weekend to Jurassic World Dominion for the last two weeks, Tom Cruise and Top Gun: Maverick bested Elvis by the slimmest of margins to claim the top of the box-office weekend.
In its fifth weekend of release, Top Gun: Maverick reclaimed the top of the box-office weekend with 30,500,176 over the weekend. This was just enough to relegate newcomer Elvis to second place with 30,500,000. Meanwhile, last week’s first-place film, Jurassic World Dominion finished in third place with 26.4 million to bring its three-week total to 302.8 million. The second debut of the weekend, the horror film The Black Phone landed just behind that in fourth place with 23.4 million to show for its opening weekend. This dropped Lightyear to fifth place with 17.7 million after a second-place finish last weekend. The Disney/Pixar film now has a two-week total of 88.8 million.
