The Estonian festival is aiming to spotlight local talent this year.
“Black Nights brings the world’s films, film professionals and projects, top-end politicians and decision makers from the private sector to Tallinn,” says festival director Tiina Lokk of Black Nights, which was classified by Fiapf as an A-list event in 2014.
Local producer Ivo Felt sums up the event’s importance to the local industry: “That can’t be underrated. For a small country, as we are, to have such a festival is a big thing,” Felt said. “Thanks to the festival, we are getting more attention for our own films.

Inspired by real characters from the award-winning book “Sex Trafficking” by Harvard professor Siddharth Kara, Will Wallace’s “Trafficked” follows a trio of intertwining stories about young women forced into the world of human, organ, drug, and gun trafficking. The film focuses on three girls — from America, Nigeria, and India — who, though horrific experiences in the trafficking world, end up as sex slaves in a Texas brothel.

Starring Ashley Judd, Anne Archer, Elisabeth Röhm, Sean Patrick Flanery, Madison Wolfe, and Patrick Duffy, the film looks to cast a glaring light on the human trafficking trade, bolstered by fact-based reporting from Kara. The professor has been researching, writing, teaching, and advocating against modern slavery for nearly two decades, and the film is a continuation of that essential work.
Appropriately enough, the film will have a...

As I watched the gorgeous first trailer for Tom Lowe's Awaken, I was reminded of the films of Godfrey Reggio (Koyaanisquati) and Terrence Malick (especially Tree of Life) and hey, what do you know, both those gentlemen serve as executive producers of this documentary. But that's not just some random director-association game. Lowe made Timescapes, a short film that garnered wide attention, and subsequently served as second-unit director for both Malick (Voyage of Time) and Reggio (Visitors). Awaken explores "humanity's relationship with technology and the natural world," according to the official synopsis. Lowe had an impressive resume in the military, political, and speechwriting worlds before becoming a filmmaker, and he's spent five years making the movie "in more than 30 countries," again per the synopsis....

Say what you will about the latter day films of Terrence Malick, dude still knows how to create some gorgeous images. The director’s visual style is practically a trademark at this point, and it’s not a surprise that some of films Malick puts his name on as a producer (“The Better Angels,” “The Vessel“) look like they could’ve been directed by man himself. So it goes with the documentary “Awaken.”
The documentary is actually from filmmaker Tom Lowe, and was shot over a 5-year period in more than 30 countries, using timelapse, time-dilation, underwater, and aerial cinematography techniques.
