The most chilling horror trilogy of the 21st century finally arrives on Netflix, and it has no deal with Final Destination or Paranormal Activity and The Ring franchises, it’s something even better than these ones.
Back in 2013, the world saw the first installment of this movie universe. Set in the 1970s, the movie focused on Lorraine and Ed, the duo of paranormal investigators on their way to solve the case of an isolated farmhouse that is haunted by supernatural creatures.

The long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot from director Gary Dauberman (Annabelle Comes Home) is still without a release date, but we’ve learned from The Hollywood Reporter this afternoon that the film will Not be releasing in theaters at all.
As we suspected, Salem’s Lot will be a straight-to-streaming release for the Max streaming service. THR notes, “No date was given, but sources believe a fourth quarter release is likely.”
Originally set for theatrical release on September 9, 2022, the new Stephen King adaptation was recently bumped to April 21, 2023, before getting ejected from the theatrical slate.
For what it’s worth, Stephen King has recently tweeted praise for the film.
King wrote earlier this year, “I’ve seen the new Salem’S Lot and it’s quite good. Old-school horror filmmaking: slow build, big payoff. Not sure why WB is holding it back; not like it’s embarrassing, or anything.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) ran an undercover sting on a Georgia-based animal training firm that services the major studios and networks. Then the activist group filed a Feb. 21 complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture alleging violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The Usda’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service tells THR that it’s reviewing the matter. “Aphis takes all animal welfare-related complaints very seriously,” says a spokesperson.
The company, Atlanta Film Animals (Afa), disputes PETA’s claims related to a variety of its creatures, from monkeys to cockatoos. It also counters that it has evidence it will share with the federal agency that, in at least one instance, the clandestine operative failed to adequately provide medication to a pair of elderly pigs — which the organization denies.

One of the most successful cinematic universes in Hollywood doesn't have any superheroes, isn't set in outer space, and wasn't originally designed as a cinematic universe at all. James Wan's 2013 horror movie "The Conjuring" was made on a budget of just $20 million but became a stunning box office success, grossing more than $320 million worldwide. That success has since spawned a whole world of horror that includes not only two "Conjuring" sequels, but also the spin-off "Annabelle" trilogy, two "Nun" movies, and (tenuously) "The Curse of La Llorona."
A big part of what makes the "Conjuring" movies so frightening is their commitment to practical effects. The strangest supernatural feats are achieved using wire work, contortionists, and stunt performers, while monsters like the Nun and the Crooked Man are real actors in make-up.

THR reports that Michael Chaves is in negotiations to serve as the director of The Conjuring 4, which is expected to be the final installment of the main series.
Michael Chaves is no stranger to The Conjuring franchise as he was the director of the last installment, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and also helmed The Nun II. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who penned the screenplay for the third installment, will return to write this final sequel. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are naturally expected to return as Ed and Lorraine Warren, with production looking to start shooting this summer in Atlanta. Plot details are being kept under wraps at this point, but a few ghostly apparitions and demonic possessions are a good bet.

New Line’s The Conjuring movie series is coming back for one last ride. Or one last rite, as it were.
The project, operating currently under the simple title of The Conjuring 4, has been in the works since early last year but has finally landed on a director. And it’s a familiar visage.
Michael Chaves, who helmed the previous installment, 2021’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, is in negotiations to direct what is being eyed as the fourth and final outing. The move makes Chaves a true Conjuring Universe player as he also directed last year’s spinoff, The Nun II.
David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who co-wrote the third installment with franchise creator James Wan, penned the screenplay.
Wan is producing with Peter Safran.

There’ll be some happy holidays on Prime Video in December, as the streamer’s seasonal offerings hope to keep the fires warm in your home this month!
As such, there are quite a few new original holiday movies coming to the service. At the beginning of the month, Eddie Murphy stars in Candy Cane Lane. In this film, the Beverly Hills Cop and Coming to America star plays a determined man who is willing to go above and beyond to win the annual Christmas home decoration contest in his neighborhood – even if it means making a very magical deal.
The DC universe will also be getting festive in December thanks to Merry Little Batman, an animated feature that sees Batman’s son, Damian Wayne, stumble upon a villainous plot on Christmas eve, one that may give him a chance to save the day when his dad isn’t around.

Warner Bros. Discovery will open Legendary’s “Dune: Part Two” not on March 15, 2024, but on March 1, 2024. That takes the place of Universal’s “The Fall Guy,” as the Ryan Gosling/Emily Blunt action comedy recently moved to May 3, thus making it the unofficial summer kick-off film for 2024. Now the Timothée Chalamet/Zendaya sci-fi fantasy, which was initially set to debut Nov. 3 of this year, is the unofficial Spring season kick-off flick instead.

“The Nun II” is more evidence that “The Conjuring Universe” is among the most consistent and bankable franchises in Hollywood. It’s a straight-up sequel to “The Nun,” with both films now serving as prequels to “The Conjuring 2.” The Michael Chaves-directed entry earned $268 million worldwide on a $39 million budget. That was up from Chaves’ $197 million-grossing “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” released in the Covid/Project Popcorn summer of 2021. It’s also more than the $200 million DC superhero tentpole “The Flash.”
The eight films, begun in 2013 with James Wan’s “The Conjuring,” have earned over $2.25 billion on a combined budget of $71 million. Well, $2.37 billion if you count Michael Chaves’ “The Curse of La Llorona.” That early 2019 flick earned $123 million in early 2019 and contained a handful of “Conjuring” universe treats.

The long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot from director Gary Dauberman (Annabelle Comes Home) is still without a release date, but we did get a bit of an update on Halloween night earlier this week. According to the latest reports, Warner Bros. is toying with the idea of bringing Salem’s Lot straight-to-streaming sometime in 2024.
Originally set for theatrical release on September 9, 2022, the new Stephen King adaptation was recently bumped to April 21, 2023, before getting ejected from the theatrical slate altogether. As of now, Salem’s Lot still doesn’t have a release date. If this week’s latest update is accurate, the film will be debuting on the Max streaming service in the coming months.

One of the biggest questions this year in terms of horror releases remains: Where’s the Salem’s Lot remake? According to Variety, the Gary Dauberman-directed Stephen King adaptation may be heading to Max, the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming platform.

While a Warner Bros. spokesperson told Variety, “No decision has been made about the film’s future distribution plans,” the outlet cites that “the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike has created a growing need for Max content.” That makes Salem’s Lot a prime candidate, considering how long the adaptation has been shelved.
Perhaps, with vocal support from fans, Salem’s Lot may yet head to theaters as Evil Dead Rise did earlier this year.

Netflix originals have always been the biggest draw for the streaming juggernaut, and their true crime documentary offerings have been so popular that they've been spoofed by both "Black Mirror," and the brilliant satirical mockumentary series "American Vandal." Released just in time for the Halloween season, the latest documentary, "The Devil on Trial," has been dominating the top 10 charts across the globe. The film is the latest from Peabody Award-winning and three-time BAFTA-nominated British writer, director, and producer, Chris Holt, and tackles the first and only time demonic possession was used as a defense in an American murder trial. Taking place in 1981, the trial made headlines as the "Devil Made Me Do It" case, as 19-year-old Arne Cheyenne Johnson claimed that he was not guilty in the murder of his landlord, Alan Bono, because he was possessed at the time of the killing.

Five years after the Conjuring Universe entry The Nun wracked up almost $366 million at the global box office, a sequel finally reached the big screen on September 8th. At the start of this month, The Nun II was given a digital release (you can get it at This Link). Now Deadline reports that the movie will be streaming on the Max service just in time for Halloween! The Nun II will be available to watch on Max as of October 27th.
The sequel didn’t replicate the box office success of the first film, but it still did quite well. As of this writing, The Nun II has earned over $257 million worldwide.
The Nun II is directed by Michael Chaves from a screenplay by Akela Cooper and the writing duo of Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing (The Autopsy of Jane Doe). The film has the following synopsis: 1956 – France. A priest is murdered.

“The Nun II” has set a streaming release date on Max just in time for Halloween weekend. The New Line horror sequel will hit Max on Friday, Oct. 27 so those looking for a new horror movie to watch before the spooky holiday will be in luck.
The latest film in the “Conjuring” universe and direct sequel to 2018’s “The Nun” opened in theaters on Sept. 8, so it marks a quick move to streaming even in the wake of the film’s box office success. It’s pulled in $257 million at the worldwide box office so far, which is under the $365 million that the first “Nun” movie pulled in but not too shabby for a budget under $40 million.
The streaming release no doubt serves to bolster Max’s visibility during a time of increased movie-watching as the Halloween season coincides with a surge in demand for horror films.

Halloween is nearly here, and one of this fall’s scariest movies will arrive on streaming just in time for the spooky holiday.
Warner Bros.’ “The Nun II” will begin streaming on Max on Oct. 27, a few days before Halloween. The film, released in theaters on Sept. 8, is the latest chapter in the “Conjuring” horror franchise and opened to a solid $32.6 million at the box office.
The movie follows the characters from the original “Nun,” which was the highest-grossing moving in the entire “Conjuring” universe. Taissa Farmiga, sister of “Conjuring” star Vera Farmiga, returns as Sister Irene in “The Nun II.” Four years after vanquishing the Demon Nun and the evil, possessive entity Valak, things get hellishly twisted once again, this time at a boarding school in France. The cast includes Jonas Bloquet, Storm Reid, Anna Popplewell and Bonnie Aarons as the titular, creepy Nun. Filmmaker Michael Chaves returns to...

In 1981, 19-year-old bright young boy Arne was prosecuted for murdering his landlord, Alan Bono. He was charged with committing murder in the first-degree, which, according to the law, translates into willfully killing someone with full intention. But Arne pleaded not guilty. And his defense was the first of its kind in the history of the United States—demonic possession. This is what the latest Netflix documentary, The Devil on Trial, is based upon. Sounds familiar, right? Yes, in case you are wondering, the popular film in the Conjuring franchise, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, was indeed based on the same story. This time around, we get to see the real people who went through it. The real Arne, who is the focal point of the documentary, his wife, Debbie Glatzel, and her brother David, who also got possessed. The other family members of the Glatzel family also appear as narrators.

Spanning nine films in total, “The Conjuring” franchise, including “The Nun II,” is as vast as it is complex.
The story that kicked off with supernatural investigating couple Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) has since expanded into a series of “Conjuring” movies and spinoffs, all set at different points in a timeline that begins all the way back in the 1300s. The events in the three proper “Conjuring” films actually do occur in the order they were released, but the spinoffs and prequels, including “The Nun” and the “Annabelle” films, make the timeline much more complicated.
Here’s how to watch all the “Conjuring” movies in chronological order, all the way back to the Dark Ages.
The Nun (2018): 1300s, 1952, 1971 The Nun (Warner Bros.)

The Nun II is an gothic supernatural horror film directed by Michael Chaves and released in 2023. The screenplay is written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and Akela Cooper, based on a story by Cooper. This movie serves as a sequel to the 2018 film, The Nun, and is the eighth installment in The Conjuring Universe franchise. The cast includes Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, and Bonnie Aarons, who reprise their roles from the first film, along with Storm Reid and Anna Popplewell joining the cast.
As a good sequel, “The Nun II” once again focuses on the elements that made the first one successful: lots of scares and a gothic atmosphere (they say now) with a photography style that emphasizes light and shadow.
Caravaggio’s tenebrism seems to still have its followers, as similar themes are combined, although this time with fewer distorted angles and more scares.

"We thought we were going to have a new start, and it didn't work out that way." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a chilling horror documentary film called The Devil on Trial, available for streaming in October, along with almost every other horror film. These horror docs seem to be part of a new trend, with others like Monster Inside on Hulu. Netflix's doc film The Devil on Trial explores the first – and only – time "demonic possession" has officially been used as a defense in a U.S. murder trial. Including firsthand accounts of alleged devil possession and a shocking murder, this extraordinary story forces reflection on our fear of the unknown. Using reenactments and home videos, this dark documentary investigates the apparent possession of a young boy and the brutal murder that followed. Some will remember this is also the same case used as the inspiration for...

Third franchise installment The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It came along in 2021, and like the other films in the franchise it was inspired by a true story of true evil.

Move over, Marvel: The Conjuring Universe is the greatest modern cinematic universe.
The quality has been consistent. The mythology is complex without being confusing. The heroic human leads are among the finest horror protagonists of the 21st century so far. The demonic villains are often truly unsettling and despicable. Every chapter in the franchise has enriched what came before while setting the stage for what comes next. You think superhero fans have been eating well at the pop culture buffet? Horror fans have had it even better.
And now that there are eight films in the Conjuring Universe, some casual viewers or newcomers may have questions. After all, entering any ongoing film series can be a tricky proposition. Do you start with the best of the bunch and then pick and choose from there? Do you watch them all in release order? Or, in the case of something as timeline-happy as the Conjuring Universe,...

As someone who actually likes "The Nun" (insert "There are dozens of us!" gif here), I'm pleased to see the sequel to the Conjuring Universe spin-off doubling down on its predecessor's approach of, to paraphrase /Film's Jacob Hall, feeling like the greatest Hammer Horror tabletop role-playing game that's never been made. Directed by Conjuring Universe veteran Michael Chaves, "The Nun II" sees the titular demon Valak (Bonnie Aarons) getting back in the habit of terrorizing the world of the living. Taissa Farmiga is also back as Sister Irene, though Demián Bichir is noticeably absent as Father Burke, a character who we learn sadly died from cholera in between films early on in the "Nun" sequel.
Not bringing Burke back for "The Nun II" makes sense enough from a creative perspective. Between the character's relatable trauma from the events in his past and Bichir's compelling, understated performance, a grounded protagonist like...

Denzel Washington is no match for this sister.
“The Nun II” topped the box office charts, earning a scary good $32.6 million this weekend from 3,728 locations. That was more than enough to topple Sony’s “The Equalizer 3,” which features Washington as a mysterious avenging angel, from the first place perch it held last weekend. “The Equalizer 3” racked up over $12.1 million in its second weekend to push its domestic gross to $61.9 million. Globally, the action sequel crossed $100 million at worldwide box office, bringing its haul to $107.7 million.
Though impressive, “The Nun II,” which is the ninth chapter in Warner Bros.’ ongoing “Conjuring” series, couldn’t match the high-water mark set by its 2018 predecessor “The Nun,” which opened with $53.8 million. The film sees Taissa Farmiga and Bonnie Aarons return as Sister Irene and the titular Nun, respectively, with newcomers to the franchise, Jonas Bloquet, Storm Reid and Anna Popplewell, rounding out...

Warner Bros. and New Line’s The Nun II kicked off the fall box office with a pleasing $32.6 million domestic opening from 3,726 theaters, more than enough to scare away The Equalizer 3 and win the weekend. Moviegoers between ages 18 and 34 made up a whopping 67 percent of ticket buyers, while the pic skewed slightly female (52 percent).
In 2018, The Nun opened to $53.8 million domestically on its way to earning $365.6 million at the worldwide box office — the top showing for any title in The Conjuring horror franchise, not adjusted for inflation. While the sequel’s domestic start came in behind the first film’s debut, no one is complaining. Overall domestic revenue for the weekend hit an estimated $88.9 million, up 118 percent over the same year last weekend.
Overseas, The Nun II launched to a rousing $52.7 million from 69 markets for an early foreign tally of $52.7 million, including scoring the biggest...

Warner Bros./New Line’s “The Nun II” is kicking off the fall box office with a $32.6 million opening weekend is making it likely that September will be a much better month for theaters than last year’s miserable slump.
While well short of the $53 million opening of the first “Nun” in 2018, “The Nun II” is meeting pre-release projections and is also in a similar range to past films in the “Conjuring” series. It tops the $24 million opening made by “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” during Warner’s day-and-date experiment in 2021, and slides just below the $35 million opening of “Annabelle: Creation” in 2017.
“The Nun II” has also made $52.7 million from 70 overseas markets this weekend — including $8.9 million from Mexico — to give it an $85.3 million global start. Warner Bros. is anticipating a final global total of over $200 million, a solid result given that all of the “Conjuring” films have...

Michael Chaves, the director behind “The Nun 2,” revealed in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly that he made the film even gorier after a test screening proved that audiences craved a higher level of violence.
“People wanted more violence,” Chaves said. “There was already a good degree of violence and gore in the movie, but people wanted more of it.”
The film, which had its theatrical release on Sept. 8, follows Sister Irene (Taissa Fargima) as she faces supernatural forces following the murder of a priest in 1956 France. Chaves explained how the crew behind the film, which is a part of the long-running “The Conjuring” franchise, put in extra work to increase the carnage.
“So, we did a little bit of additional photography and we ramped that up. It just goes to show how audiences are always changing, evolving. Even in the earliest version, it was more [violent] than what was in your traditional ‘Conjuring’ movie,...

“The Nun II” spooked the box office with $13 million on opening day, including $3.1 million in previews.
The ninth and latest chapter in Warner Bros. “Conjuring” series is expected to open around to $31.3 million this weekend from 3,728 locations, a drop from the record-setting original movie but enough to surpass Denzel Washington and Sony’s “The Equalizer 3.” The 2018 “Nun” original scored the highest opening of a movie in the “Conjuring” universe with $53.8 million, and it’s the series’ highest-grossing worldwide with $365.5 million.
Taissa Farmiga and Bonnie Aarons return as Sister Irene and the titular Nun, respectively, with Jonas Bloquet, Storm Reid and Anna Popplewell joining the franchise. Filmmaker Michael Chaves returns to the series after previously directing “The Curse of La Llorona” and “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.”

Warner Bros. and New Line’s “The Nun II” is kicking off the fall box office with a solid $32 million estimated opening weekend after grossing $13.1 million on Friday from 3,728 theaters, matching prerelease projections.
The first “Nun” was released in 2018 as a spinoff of New Line’s lucrative “Conjuring” horror series, and is the highest grossing film in the franchise with a $53 million domestic opening and a $365 million global box office total against a reported $22 million budget.
“Nun II” has never been projected to reach the heights of its predecessor, but is still beating the $24 million opening of the 2021 film “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” which released simultaneously in theaters and on streaming.
If walk-up traffic is higher than expected, “Nun II” could stretch closer to $35 million, which is what fellow “Conjuring” spinoff “Annabelle: Creation” earned in 2017 before inflation adjustment. Reception has been tepid among early moviegoers with a C+ on CinemaScore,...

The Conjureverse’s latest installment marks the eighth entry in the franchise and the fifth spinoff. This immensely popular horror series is widely regarded as one of the finest in the genre, featuring some of the most menacing villains in the world of horror. While The Nun received its share of criticism, the second film is performing admirably under the circumstances. Valak continues to strike fear into the hearts of viewers, much like his or her (however you’d like to refer to the demon) debut in The Conjuring 2. Despite the franchise’s esteemed reputation and a decade of expansion, it’s noteworthy that there is relatively little interconnected lore across the series. The primary binding element throughout all the films is the presence of Ed and Lorraine, which could be a reason why entries without them tend to lack the same excitement. It’s important to acknowledge that...

Warning! Contains major spoilers for The Nun II, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and all other movies in the series!
Do you remember when the Conjuring films were marketed around the idea that these stories (at least in the mainline series) were based on “true events”? How quaint that seems a few years later when Warner Bros. Pictures and director/producer James Wan have built a sprawling, gargantuan shared cinematic universe filled with ghosts, ghouls, and good times in the desecrated church yards!
Indeed, not since the Universal Monsters and the first shared and connected film universe has there been an overarching horror brand as devilishly appealing to moviegoers as the Conjuring Cinematic Universe. With interconnected supernatural terrors that span the 20th century and increasingly tenuous “real events,” the films have turned a doll named Annabelle, the actual figure of legend La Llorona, and a nun with...

The ninth and latest instalment in Warner Bros.’ “Conjuring” universe is expected to open the weekend with roughly $30 million to $33 million — a decline from the original “Nun”‘s record-setting opening, but enough to contend against Sony’s “The Equalizer 3” starring Denzel Washington.
