Documentary fans have a lot to be excited about this month on HBO and Max. April begins with the premiere of The Synanon Fix, a docuseries that follows the rise and fall of the cult-like drug rehabilitation program Synanon. The documentary Brandy Hellville and the Cult of Fast Fashion takes a deep-dive into the controversial “one size fits most” clothing brand Brandy Mellville and the impact of fast fashion on the planet.
An American Bombing: The Road to April 19th looks at the surge of political violence and anti-government sentiment that led to the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, and the effects still felt nearly 30 years later. HBO is also returning with a second part to their popular docuseries The Jinx, with filmmakers continuing their investigation of Robert Durst.
But if documentaries aren’t your thing, there’s still plenty of popular films hitting Max in April, like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,...

It’s the NASCAR season and the world of sports is gearing up to witness some of the most amazing sports events in the world. Drawing thousands of viewers each time, the Daytona 500 is the iconic opening event of the NASCAR Cup Series, held annually at the Daytona International Speedway in Dayton Beach, Florida. And like every other year with a famous celeb serving as the Grand Marshall, it was Dwayne the Rock Johnson who held the title this time.
Dwayne Johnson (via Jimmy Kimmel)
Yet Johnson is not the only celebrity fond of high-speed racing and the thrill attached to it. NASCAR has witnessed more dignitaries and celebrities than events like the Oscars, for apparently driving around in circles is as hypnotizing and intriguing as it can get, literally.

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. Today we’re talking to UK film veterans Richard Kondal and Patrick Fischer, founders of post-production house Creativity Media and film finance company Creativity Capital. The duo, which sold Creativity Media to Fulwell 73 in 2019, talk us through the jump from post-production to financing to the launch of their new London-based co-production outfit Big Safari, international sales strand Architect and investment in VFX house Koala FX.
Staying alive in the UK independent film world is no easy feat these days but Richard Kondal and Patrick Fischer are two execs who have been quietly thriving in the space for a number of years. The two veterans, who first founded post-production outfit Creativity Media in 2010 before selling it to UK production house Fulwell 73 in...

Updated: “Super/Man,” a documentary about the life of Christopher Reeve, has finalized a deal to sell to Warner Bros. Discovery following its buzzy Sundance Film Festival premiere. It’s an interesting home for the documentary, because Reeve experienced his greatest commercial success playing the Man of Steel in the first four Superman movies, which Warner Bros. produced. James Gunn, the co-head of Warner-owned DC Studios, is currently reviving the character in the upcoming “Superman: Legacy,” which he wrote and will direct.
Wbd’s DC Studios. Warner Bros. Motion Pictures, HBO, CNN Films and Max will collaborate on the film’s global release across theatrical and home viewing release windows.
“Everyone at Warner Bros. Discovery is incredibly proud to come together as one company to partner with Christopher Reeve’s family and the filmmakers behind ‘Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story’ and bring his personal journey to audiences the world over.

Directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story recounts and examines the incredibly compelling, tragic, redemptive story of actor and activist Christopher Reeve. He was made famous playing the superhero Superman in Richard Donner/Richard Lester/Sidney J. Furie’s quartet of films in the ’70s and ’80s. In 1995, Reeve was paralyzed from the neck down after being thrown from a horse during a competition. That terrible accident eventually sparked the creation of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, a non-profit whose goal is to cure spinal-cord injury and improve the quality of life for those with paralysis.
It’s hard to write criticism of films like these. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is an important movie about an important subject, supported by those closest to him––in this case, Reeve’s grown-up children Matthew, Alexandra, and Will. Bonhôte and Ettedgui are accomplished documentarians (see their...

There’s an iconic scene in 1978’s “Superman” of Clark Kent, played by Christopher Reeve, spying Lois Lane dangling from a helicopter. He locates a revolving door, emerges as the Man of Steel, and soars upward and catches a falling Lane.
“Easy, miss, I’ve got you,” says Superman. Lane is still panicking. “You’ve got me? Who’s got you?”
Superman smiles, offers a casual goodbye and flies off into the night, his forelock perfect. It’s the image the world held of Reeve until 1995. And that’s where Ian Bonhote and Peter Ettedgui’s new documentary, “Super/Man,” picks up a very different version of the hero’s journey.
Reeve is now paralyzed from the neck down after a fall from his horse. He cannot move, he cannot soar. His wife, Dana, tends to him and then talks of seeking out towels fresh from the dryer so she...

Where are the Skins cast now? Short answer: absolutely everywhere.
While the show did earn critical acclaim as well as a cult following over the course of its seven series, when this scrappy teen comedy drama launched on E4 in 2007 few could have predicted just how many household names it would spawn.
Among Skins’ impressive alumni are actors who went on to win Oscars and Baftas, play lead roles in hit movies like Slumdog Millionaire and Get Out, not to mention star in hit shows like Game of Thrones and Peaky Blinders.
Let’s take a look at some of the Skins cast’s best roles:
Joe Dempsie – Game of Thrones

The "Cars" universe has taken us all on a journey. With each new installment in the franchise, we learn more about this wacky, wild alternate reality the titular automobiles call home. The creatives involved have no problem further stirring the pot by adding more head-scratching things into their world-building. Sometimes this means pulling in stuff we're familiar with from our reality. And sometimes, it's especially otherworldly.
"Cars on the Road" -- the new animated series that just dropped on Disney+ -- takes Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) and his best friend Mater (voice of Larry the Cable Guy) across the country to meet up with Mater's Sister. Each episode involves a brand new adventure in a brand new place, which has provided director Steve Purcell and the creative team with plenty of fun when it comes to tackling how to go about each episode.

With its list of new releases for June 2022, HBO Max is joining in what should be a TV summer to remember.
Not content to let Netflix’s Stranger Things or Prime Video’s The Boys to dominate the summer TV landscape, HBO is coming through with a new season of one of its big hits. Westworld season 4 is set to premiere June 26 on both HBO and HBO Max. What will this season of the increasingly confusing sci-fi drama be about? Per HBO’s synopsis it will be “A dark odyssey about the fate of sentient life on earth.” So you know, only that.
Irma Vep is the only other Max Original of note this month. Based on a 1996 cult classic of the same name, this limited series stars Alicia Vikander as a disillusioned movie star looking to remake the early 20th century French silent film serial Les Vampires.

There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.
Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.

British distributor Vertigo Releasing has acquired David Bowie origin film “Stardust,” starring Johnny Flynn, who recently won the best actor award at London’s Raindance Film Festival for his performance as Bowie.
Vertigo will release the film before the end of the year, on the back of the U.S. release by IFC Films on Nov. 25. Ed Caffrey, head of acquisitions and business development at Vertigo, lauded the “compelling performance from the very talented Johnny Flynn.”
As well as the strength of Flynn’s performance, the distributor will build on Bowie’s enduring popularity in the U.K., and positive local reviews, such as a four-star write-up in The Times newspaper, which called “Stardust” “a remarkably confident, smart and resilient film with the sense of soul that its fascinating subject deserves.”
The film is a “cusp-of-fame-of-a-rock-star biopic,” in the words of Variety‘s reviewer, which dramatizes Bowie’s road trip...

Nicola Pearcey, President of Lionsgate’s film and TV operations in the UK, is to leave the company “to pursue new opportunities” at the end of the year, the mini-major has announced. Pearcey has only been in the role since August.
A successor has not been named and Lionsgate was unavailable for comment. Our sources indicate that the studio’s UK structure may look a little different going forward. There is likely to be clarity in coming weeks.
This is Lionsgate’s second European chief to depart in the space of six months, following Zygi Kamasa’s exit in July. As the realities of Covid and shifting viewing habits take hold, we are seeing significant restructuring and downsizing across most traditional studios.
During her 14-year tenure at Lionsgate UK, Pearcey helped shepherd the UK releases of blockbuster franchises The Hunger Games, John Wick and The Expendables and critically-acclaimed successes including the multiple La La Land,...

Beginning not least with the cancellation of the Olympic Games in Japan, 2020 has been a year unprecedentedly devoid of sporting events. Though there’s been a slow return to normal there’s still no live audience, stadiums are mostly empty, and many athletes were left to hang up hopes after endless training. Enter “Rising Phoenix,” “McQueen” team Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui’s . While it doesn’t capture the same excitement of a live competition, the filmmakers damn well try, intercutting intelligently art-designed interviews with flashy visual symbolism, ethereal reenactments, and frequently nail-shredding archival footage from Paralympic Games of the past.
Narrated by Paralympics advocate Prince Harry, “Rising Phoenix” will probably introduce you to some of the Paralympics’ most famous figures, and the disabilities that have become a tremendous asset in their respective fields, from skiing while blind and fencing in a wheelchair. You may recognize Tatyana McFadden, a Russian-American Paralympic celebrity who,...

This NOS4A2 review contains spoilers.
NOS4A2 Season 2 Episode 6
One of the smarter choices in “The Hourglass” is to lean on Maggie (Jahkara Smith), who has been underutilized this season. She was such a crucial part of the first season of NOS4A2, being Vic’s inroad to the world of the supernatural, and this season she’s mostly just been hanging around, afraid to use her bag of tiles due to the horrible side effects she suffers. That in and of itself is an important role—gifts have consequences—but it’s not the most exciting thing to be on television, and to see such a dynamic character sidelined is always disappointing. However, Maggie proves her worth in this episode, because of her willingness to put herself in danger for her friends and her gifts.
The only thing I remember about the Fullmetal Alchemist series is the repeated refrain regarding the law of equivalent exchange.

Amid all the amazing performances and inspiring speeches at the MTV Movie & TV Awards on Monday night, one particular win gave us the most poignant speech of the entire award show.

In the 1960s, early in his career as a milliner for New York’s Bergdorf Goodman, Roy Halston Frowick, who would come to be known only by that middle name, attended a dinner in the Hamptons at which two heterosexual men refused to be seated at the same table as, in their words, a “f—ot.”
While hardly an inciting incident, the variations on this sort of moment tend to hover over the careers of accomplished queer people, driving them to be better at their jobs in a world that still denigrates their humanity, and it also hovers over “Halston,” a sleek documentary from director Frédéric Tcheng (“Dior and I”) about the American fashion designer’s legendary career and rocky relationship with business interests.
Another equally chilling word also hovers over the film: “Volume.” It’s uttered by a Jc Penney executive in archival footage from 1982, when he’s asked...

More than half of these releases made less than £50,000 at box office.
The Film Distributors’ Association has published its annual yearbook, revealing a series of statistics around the UK cinema market in 2018.
A total of 916 films were released in UK cinemas in 2018 – equating to almost 18 new releases per week. That’s a new record, topping the watermark of 900 posted in 2016. In 2017, the number fell slightly to 874. The number has increased significantly over the last decade, growing from 503 in 2009.
However, many of the titles released in 2018 did not return significant grosses. Of the 916, 484 (53%) grossed between £1 and £50,000, with 282 (31%) of those grossing less than £10,000.

If things had gone differently, the red-carpet mileage of awards season would still be splashed with the showy, flowy designs of Roy Halston Frowick: better known simply by his middle name, the Midwest-raised fashion designer belatedly put American couture on the map in the 1970s. After his luxury brand expanded to ubiquitous levels in just a few years, riding a wave of celebrity disco culture, a series of ill-advised business decisions and cruel corporate sabotage combined to demolish it even more suddenly, making Halston a has-been by the time of his AIDS-related death in 1990. It’s a true fashion tragedy that docmaker Frédéric Tcheng unpicks with devotion and compelling attention to detail in his plainly titled “Halston,” though the film errs by treating its subject’s demise as more of a mystery than it really was.

Exclusive: Adam Rifkin wrote and directed The Last Movie Star, the 2018 release starring Burt Reynolds, who died Thursday at 82. The iconic actor played an aging screen hero who is talked into attending a local film festival that plans to give him a career achievement award. The event turns out to be “run” by a pair of starstruck local dudes. Here is Rifkin’s first-person remembrance of the real-life screen legend.
I am utterly heartbroken by the news of Burt Reynolds’ passing. This one hits hard. Really hard. They don’t loom larger than The Bandit. And Hollywood doesn’t make movie stars like Burt Reynolds anymore. The world has lost a genuine legend today, but I also lost a friend.
Growing up in Chicago, Burt was my childhood hero. He was the coolest and the funniest, and he never took himself seriously. That self-deprecating sense of humor was what made him so likable.

In a year of stellar documentaries (Won’t You Be My Neighbor, Rbg, McQueen), Minding the Gap takes its place with the cream of the crop. In his debut feature, filmmaker Bing Liu started with 12 years of footage that he shot in his hometown of Rockford, Illinois, to trace the restless lives of his skateboarder buddies; what he ended with was a larger statement about the shifting definitions of what it means to be a man. Weaving sensational boys-on-the-board footage into the stories of his friends (and himself) as they...

For a documentary titled McQueen, a question quickly springs to mind: which one? Steve McQueen, the iconic actor? Steve McQueen, the British director? Or Alexander McQueen, the British fashion designer? Turns out, it is the latter.
Fashionistas will instantly think of Alexander McQueen, of course, but given that there are so many famous McQueens, maybe this single-name title was not the best choice. Fans of the ’60s-’70s actor who plunk down money for tickets are in for a real surprise.
But with that quibble out of the way, McQueen is a good documentary about the rise and fall of a fashion original, Lee Alexander McQueen, a rebel with a cause who shook up the fashion world. McQueen didn’t look like the stereotype of a fashion designer, a slightly chubby young man who looked a bit like James Cordon,...

Bleecker Street was looking to capture the nonfiction zeitgeist of this spring and summer’s robust runs of popular documentaries like Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, RBG and Three Identical Strangers, and it appears to have dazzled with its Tribeca premiere McQueen. Directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, the title about late British fashion sage Alexander McQueen grossed $96,928 in four theaters this weekend in its debut, an average of $24,232 per screen, a number that places it on par with the opening frames of the year’s other successful docs.
Summit Entertainment/Lionsgate also launched Carlos López Estrada’s dramedy Blindspotting with Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal with 14 runs Friday. Over its three days, the Sundance-bowing feature is estimating a $332,500 take for a solid $23,750 per-theater average. Also planting firm roots with an exclusive opening-weekend run was Sundance Selects’ Far From the Tree, grossing $20,034.

In true popcorn-season form, it’ll be a battle of the sequels at the domestic box office this weekend.
Universal’s “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” is taking a chance at the top spot against fellow newcomers “The Equalizer 2” and “Unfriended: Dark Web.”
The follow-up to 2008’s jukebox musical “Mamma Mia!” is tracking for a three-day tally between $30 million and $36 million when it opens in over 3,200 locations. A $30 million-plus debut would be a jump on its predecessor’s $27 million start. Much like the hit Broadway musical it was based on, “Mamma Mia” became a box office smash, earning $615 million worldwide on a $52 million budget. Though it pocketed an impressive $144 million in North America, “Mamma Mia” found even greater success overseas, where Swedish pop group Abba has a huge following. At the time, it was the highest-grossing film directed by a woman (Phyllida Lloyd), until it was surpassed by...
