Ah Hollywood. The evil temptress where talent often overshadows any sort of character flaw. Many people claim it to be a new development with the advent of social media, where a person tweets out something dumb ten years ago only to have it brought back up when they have a new Netflix movie dropping. But actually, celebrities have seen their careers implode long before people posted pictures of their dinners online for the world to see. Think back to the story of Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle, one of the highest-paid silent film stars of the era whose talent and fame were overshadowed when a woman was assaulted and subsequently died at a party hosted by the famed comedian. Arbuckle was acquitted of the crimes, but his career never recovered. We have never seen a career implosion like we witnessed in 2023 when an emerging talent had a genuine break-out year that was...

Jonathan Majors Career Timeline In A Glimpse(Photo Credit –IMDb)
Jonathan Majors has gained much recognition for his role as Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He started his career on the small screen and is now associated with one of the highest-grossing studios. However, his professional life has taken a hit with the assault charges against him, and the trial is underway; let us look at his career timeline from When We Rise to Creed III and Loki 2.
The actor was born in California and studied at Duncanville High School. He was so inspired by Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, especially by Heath Ledger’s Joker, that he joined the theatres. He then went to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts to get his bachelor’s degree and earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from the Yale School of Drama in 2016.

Jonathan Majors may have just gotten a break as far as his reputation goes, as Grace Jabbari – the woman who accused him of assault and harassment back in March – was arrested for “suspicion of misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor criminal mischief”, according to The New York Times.
Grace Jabbari’s arrest was a result of a counterclaim from Jonathan Majors, who alleged that she was actually the one who assaulted him. However, Jabbari was not prosecuted and was released. She will, however, have to appear in court at a later date. Despite no prosecution, one does wonder how the public perception of Majors may change. It wouldn’t be much of a surprise if there is indeed a shift; just as many declared Majors guilty immediately after his arrest – his talent agency dropped him the month after – there will most certainly be people that point to Jabbari’s arrest and pin her as the guilty one.

Unfortunately, the tanking of Amblin/Universal’s $45M-costing The Last Voyage of the Demeter stands out like a wart, since we haven’t had many misfires this summer. Jonathan Majors is currently one of the hottest actors today. Majors joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Phase 4 as the next “big bad,” Kang the Conqueror. However, he has been in other productions before, and his notoriety grows with every project. The actor has a quirky trait involving holding a cup wherever he goes, even on red carpets. Majors reveals how his mother’s advice inspired this strange habit.
Jonathan Majors has had a rapid rise to the top
Majors’ first role was in the eight-part docuseries When We Rise. The actor landed the part while still at the Yale School of Drama, playing real-life gay activist Ken Jones. Majors met Jones to learn more about him before bringing his story to the screen. He also appeared in the revisionist Western Hostiles, which debuted in 2017.

Jonathan Majors has been an actor on the rise during the last several years, popping up in offbeat studio films like "Hostiles," "White Boy Rick" and "Captive State" before making a splash in "The Last Black Man in San Francisco" and HBO's gone-too-soon series "Lovecraft Country." It's on the strength of his work in those films and shows that Marvel Studios hired him to anchor the next phase of their Cinematic Universe as Kang the Conqueror, a villain who's currently mixing it up with Ant-Man in the recent "Quantumania," and he continues to play challenging characters elsewhere, such as in the upcoming "Magazine Dreams."
Now he's poised to demonstrate his considerable range once again with his performance as Damian Anderson in "Creed III." In the film, Damian is a man who's grown up within the prison system while his old buddy, Adonis Creed, has risen to greatness in the boxing ring,...

On Jan. 8, NATPE cancelled its Jan. 18-20 Miami in-person conference, due to skyrocketing Omicron cases. No online event was put in its place.
The show, however, has gone on.
Some sales companies have made the trip to Miami anyway. Many others, who had already shifted Miami business meetings online, will still make those calls. Spanish language entertainment business publication Produ has launched a NATPE Showcase, bowed by an Inter Medya’s presentation of Turkish novela Aziz, a 1930s-set family drama. On Monday, Globo released details of its slate of new telenovelas, led by “In Your Place,” direct by email to targeted buyers.
Over June 18-20, Variety will publish three E-Show Dailies capturing breaking news from the international TV business. Welcome to this week’s Nwa: Power review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and I’m back to reviewing the National Wrestling Alliance every week. It is nice to be back at the original wrestling league/body and its World Title, which is the only championship that actually means anything. I’m going to be honest with you here. I don’t give a s—t about the other wrestling leagues. I care about the wrestlers and the matches, but promotions don’t matter to me. The only exception is The Nwa, since it is the original and the source of the vast majority of wrestling history. There isn’t a moment in WWE history that isn’t eclipsed in some manner by the most fleeting instance in the glory years of The Nwa. I wish Billy Corgan would start showing The Nwa the proper respect. He...

A version of this story about “The Mosquito Coast” first appeared in the Comedy & Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
(Note: This story may include spoilers).
Cinematographer Alex Disenhof admits to not being terribly familiar with “The Mosquito Coast” via either Paul Theroux’s 1981 novel or Peter Weir’s 1986 film starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. But for those who have seen any of the episodes to date, it’s a rare case where that is perfectly Ok. “We didn’t really want to use them as jumping off points too much,” Disenhof said. “We wanted to tell our own story, and we were guided by the scripts handed to us.”
Apple’s series, hatched by “Luther” creator Neil Cross, retains the main story of both sources: the Foxes, an American family led by its eccentric, inventor paterfamilias Allie and his more introspective wife Margot (Melissa George), find...

It looks like Roland Emmerich has re-teamed with German director Tim Fehlbaum on a science fiction thriller called Haven: Above Sky. Some research into the title shows that it's been in post-production since early 2019, but there is good pedigree and rep behind the film, including production company Constantin Film (Resident Evil series), and international sales rep from Mister Smith Ent. who managed I Am Mother and Captive State. Also, the visual FX company Scanline has it listed as an upcoming project. Here's hoping this means we hear more from this one sooner than later. Set in the distant future, the film is set to follow a female astronaut, shipwrecked on the long-decimated Earth who must decide the fate of the wasteland's remaining populace. Emmerich...

Updated with additional distributors and adjustments. As blockbusters battled it out at the box office, the specialty space hit high notes with Judy, flew with The Peanut Butter Falcon, shined with Uncut Gems, gave us one helluva Farewell and took us back to Downton Abbey. Major box office strides were made in 2019 with fare from indie, art-house-driven distributors that delivered confident numbers, proving that audiences are craving bold and intimate narratives told through a scaled-down lens. Of the distributors in the specialty box office space, Focus Features, A24, Roadside Attractions and Neon had a banner year with a slate of films that garnered critical acclaim.

Things are happening fast for Jonathan Majors. In January at the Sundance Film Festival, the actor became an instant breakout, with a winning performance in Joe Talbot’s wistful “The Last Black Man in San Francisco.” The movie finds Majors playing quirky artist and playwright Montgomery “Mont” Allen, and the role recently scored the 30-year-old Yale School of Drama graduate Gotham and Spirit Awards nominations — but he’s unfazed by the sudden acclaim.
“To me, an award just means your peers are saying, ‘He contributed to the form,’ and I want to contribute to the form much as possible,” Majors said. “I’ve been lucky enough to be busy, but it’s still strange at times. My manager will tell me that so-and-so wants to interview me, and I say, ‘Me? Are you sure they have the right guy?’ So it’s probably just an adjustment I need to make.

There have been plenty of box office hits in 2019 from “Avengers: Endgame” to “Joker” to “Us.” But as always, there are films that end up taking a dive once they hit theaters. Some have been failed attempts to revive flailing franchises. Others are poorly reviewed films that moviegoers barely notice on the cinema marquee. Either way, they’ve made this list.

Sony Pictures is starting to take meetings to lock down a director for Venom 2, the sequel to last year’s Marvel villain pic that grossed $856.1 million worldwide. We hear that it’s only at the meeting stages at this point, and no offers are out, but that the list of helmers includes Mowgli and Breathe director Andy Serkis, Bumblebee‘s Travis Knight and Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Captive State helmer Rupert Wyatt.
There is no clear frontrunner at this moment.
Deadline previously heard at some point that Rupert Sanders (Ghost in the Shell) was a person of interest, but that didn’t work out.
Ruben Fleischer directed the first installment for Sony. Venom was the surprise sensation among 2018’s many superhero films. Kelly Marcel, one of the screenwriters on the first film, was hired to write the follow-up to showcase actor Tom Hardy and his shape-shifting CG alien symbiote.

With “Spider-Man: Far From Home” crossing the $1 billion worldwide box-office milestone, Sony is now looking to get the “Venom” sequel off the ground and executives recently met with a handful of new directing candidates.
Sources tell Variety that Andy Serkis, “Bumblebee” director Travis Knight and Rupert Wyatt are among the directors meeting for the coveted job on the film that has Tom Hardy set to return in the title role. Insiders say these are just meetings and no one has moved into a front-runner position.
Ruben Fleischer directed the first pic in 2018, but is not returning as he is in post-production on “Zombieland: Double Tap.”
Sony hopes to shoot the film in the fall.
“Venom,” from Sony Pictures’ arsenal of Marvel characters, grossed a massive $855 million worldwide. The news comes after the studio recently dated an untitled Marvel sequel for October 2020. Comic-book enthusiasts put the pieces together to assume that slot was for “Venom 2,...

“Native Son” premiered on HBO last night, and it would appear that Ashton Sanders wishes A24 had promoted it more. The studio produced Rashid Johnson’s adaptation of Richard Wright’s revered novel but sold it to the premium-cable network prior to Sundance this year rather than distribute it on its own, as was originally intended. Ahead of the film’s airing last night, Sanders took to his Instagram story with two pointed posts: “@a24 where’s the native son love? Asking for a friend” and “@a24 what’s good?”
The actor previously worked with A24 on “Moonlight,” his breakthrough role, and more recently appeared in this year’s “Captive State.” Later last night, the studio posted an Instagram story of its own promoting HBO’s debut of “Native Son.”
In his Sundance review of the film, IndieWire’s Eric Kohn described it as “less than the sum of its parts,...

Captive State is director Rupert Wyatt’s first feature film in five years after the relatively underseen drama, and his remake of the same name, The Gambler – released in 2014, starring Mark Wahlberg, Brie Larson and John Goodman. Wyatt re-teams with Goodman on his latest science fiction thriller that evokes a similar sentiment as his breakout cinematic hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes in 2011, with deeply engaging social/political commentary and a superb climactic flair that crafts Captive State into a thrilling, albeit slightly over-convoluted narrative.
The stand out here is the superbly eerie and grounded production design by Keith P. Cunningham. The execution of scale and scope in the unsettling and glib setting of...

Neon’s space documentary Apollo 11 soars to $6.9m after four weekends.
March 25 Update: Riding high on frenzied buzz and comparisons – by some observers in the Us at least – to Alfred Hitchcock, Jordan Peele confirmed that he is the genuine article as Us, his follow-up to global hit Get Out, delivered the highest debut of all time for an original horror film in North America on a confirmed $71.1m.
Furthermore the story of a family hunted by their doppelgangers produced the third highest horror film opening weekend in North America, behind It on $123.4m and last year’s Halloween reboot on $76.2m.

This week was mostly about streaming here on the Casual Cinecast. We review the newest Netflix thriller, Triple Frontier, starring Ben Affleck, Oscar Issac, and Charlie Hunnam. The film is directed by J.C. Chandor. The hosts also briefly discuss everything else they've been watching this week before moving into the main review, which contains a spoiler free section before moving into a spoiler-filled conversation.
Before we movie into the main review for Triple Frontier, the hosts like to go over what they've been up to, in a section called "What's On Our Mind". Netflix finally released the final eight episodes of Arrested Development's fifth season on March 15th. Mike decided to check those out right away, and has some opinions on the show's (likely) conclusion. He also discusses the finale of Star Wars Resistance season 1, and whether or not it's worth checking out.

If you somehow haven't heard yet, Netflix is coming out with a Mötley Crüe biopic, and it looks seriously wild. Based on Mötley Crüe's bestselling 2001 autobiography The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band, this long-awaited biopic will follow the story of the heavy metal band's rise from obscurity to super stardom and international fame during the course of the 1980s. What's even crazier than the stories drugs, alcohol, and groupies told in the book (which are supposedly all true) is the incredibly stacked cast, and we can't imagine a better person to play Mötley Crüe's founding member and drummer Tommy Lee than Machine Gun Kelly.

“Captain Marvel” continued its dominance with a $69 million second weekend. The 55 percent second weekend drop is on par with the most recent “Avengers” and “Thor” entries; by contrast, “Wonder Woman” and “Black Panther” each dropped about 44 percent in their second outings.
Of all moviegoers this week, about half went to see “Captain Marvel.” That left the total gross, which will end up somewhat above $140 million, about $10 million above the same weekend last year. That’s two up weekends in a row after a long string of inferior three-day totals. That brings the year-to-date drop to just under 19 percent, with a total take lagging by about $460 million from where things stood in 2018.
The domestic take so far for the Brie Larson starrer is up to $266 million 10 days in, with over $400 million (about where “Wonder Woman” ended up) looking certain. The foreign take of $494 million brings worldwide to $760 million. That makes the...

It may seem like a fool’s errand to find a new angle on the alien invasion thriller — Captive State, however, is determined to give it a shot. It barely shows us the extraterrestrials themselves; our clearest view comes when we glimpse them in the opening moments, during the initial hostile takeover. The creatures look like giant spiders crossed with porcupines, and they have the ability to obliterate people with one giant blast of … well, something. It doesn’t matter. The point is that they’re extremely powerful. After that opening prologue,...

For a second weekend in a row Disney and Marvel's Captain Marvel topped the weekend box office as it has now posted over $760 million worldwide in just twelve days in global release. Overall, the weekend ended up topping the same weekend last year for a second straight week as both Wonder Park and Five Feet Apart outperformed expectations with their opening weekend performance. At the same time Lionsgate's release of Pantelion's No Manches Frida 2 delivered a top ten finish from just 472 theaters, topping Focus's disappointing release of Captive State, which struggled in its debut in over 2,500 locations. Disney's Captain Marvel topped the weekend box office for a second weekend in a row, delivering an estimated $69.3 million sophomore frame, dipping -54.8% and outperforming the -56% average second weekend dip for a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This pushes the film's domestic cume over $266 million after just ten days in domestic release.

The second frame of Disney-Marvel’s latest MCU installment, 'Captain Marvel,' is set to top the box office with an estimated $70 million.
The superhero film already pushed past the $200 million mark domestically after taking in $19 million on Friday for a total of about $215 million. It’s also generated $378 million overseas after jolting the domestic box office out of a slump that had seen it down 27% from last year.
“Captain Marvel’s” second weekend will mark the second-highest in March box office history with “Beauty and the Beast” having taken in $90 million in its second frame in 2017. “Captain Marvel’s” weekend take will mark a 54% drop from its debut.
Paramount’s animated adventure film “Wonder Park” should drop into second place with about $17 million from 3,838 North American locations, while CBS Films and Lionsgate’s “Five Feet Apart” is estimated to bring in about $13 million from 2,803 domestic sites for third place.

Studios don’t enjoy playing into a Disney/Marvel movie nor do they enjoy playing in the wake of one, and with Captain Marvel staying strong with an anticipated strong $68.9M-$70M second weekend most of the wide entries —Wonder Park, Captive State, and Five Feet Apart are essentially built for those who’ve already taken in the Brie Larson tentpole.
With that weekend result, Captain Marvel owns the second best second frame in March after Beauty and the Beast two years ago which drew $90.4M and ahead of 2010’s Alice in Wonderland ($62.7M). Friday’s results of $18.8M put Captain Marvel at $215.7M through Eod today. By end of Sunday, she’s looking at $266.9M at the high-end.

If near-future science fiction has taught us anything, it’s that humanity is irremediably doomed — either we succumb to rapacious technology or natural disasters of our own making, or an invasion by foes beyond our atmosphere wipes us out or enslaves us. Rupert Wyatt’s “Captive State” adheres to the latter variant but shows no intention of providing entertainment, just an unsatisfying potluck of quasi-relevant, frustration-inducing ideas.
Nine years after first contact, Earth’s governments have surrendered power to the alien overlords, whose spiny-looking leader is known as The Legislator. These creatures are benevolent in the way that a dictator is good to anyone: They’ve delivered stability in exchange for oppression. Up-close, the extraterrestrial enemies read as a crossbreed between a hairy tarantula and a lychee.
In response, the unimaginatively named insurgent group Phoenix has emerged and consistently carried out attacks on the “closed zones,” underground areas from which...

Giving new meaning to #TheResistance, “Captive State” envisions a future in which those “I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords” memes have finally come to pass. Rupert Wyatt’s fixation on non-humans taking over the world continues unabated in the sci-fi thriller, with the “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” director introducing us to the earth nearly a decade after it fell to an alien species who have since moved on to the sinister second phase of their plan. What he doesn’t introduce us to, alas, is any real reason why we should care about the ongoing efforts to push back against these creatures’ oppressive regime.
Nine years after conquering the planet with minimal resistance, the Legislators, as they’re called — perhaps the least intimidating name for invading aliens in movie history — have all but disappeared from daily life. They instead rule from a deep underground lair...

The romantic drama “Five Feet Apart” has opened with $715,000 on Thursday night, barely beating previews for the animated film “Wonder Park,” which earned $700,000.
Focus Features’ sci-fi movie “Captive State” generated $300,000 on Thursday. The trio of wide openings is expected to be dwarfed by the sophomore frame of Brie Larson’s “Captain Marvel,” which could generate another $70 million to $85 million. “Wonder Park,” an animated family film from Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies, earned $700,000 in its Thursday box office previews from 2,620 screens. It opens on approximately 3,800 screens this weekend.
Paramount is looking at an opening weekend between $10-$14 million for the children’s fantasy tale, but it is of course contending with “Captain Marvel” in what is expected to be an especially strong second weekend for the Marvel superhero film. “Wonder Park” is tracking similarly to Paramount’s “Sherlock Gnomes,” which opened in March last year to just $10.6 million on a $59 million budget.
“Captain Marvel” meanwhile grossed an additional $9.1 million domestically on Thursday, bringing its domestic total to $196.8 million. It also made an additional $16.1 million internationally on Thursday, bringing its overall global total to $575.5 million.

Given the allusions to literal and thematic Trojan Horses that pepper its third act, one probably shouldn’t be surprised that “Captive State” — which opened cold on March 14 after Focus mysteriously canceled screenings for critics — actually is something of a purposefully camouflaged interloper. Although the TV ads and other promotional material appear to promise a megaplex-ready thrill ride about space invaders and rebellious Earthlings, this rigorously intelligent, cunningly inventive, and impressively suspenseful drama plays more like a classic tale about a disparate group of resistance fighters united in a guerrilla campaign against an occupying force.
The big difference here, of course, is that the occupiers are extraterrestrials, not German troops or British colonialists. But, truth to tell, director Rupert Wyatt (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”) and scriptwriter Erica Beeney (“The Battle of Shaker Heights”) don’t seem terribly interested in those intergalactic beasties, which appear only fleetingly on scattered occasions,...

Captive State, starring John Goodman and Ashton Sanders, from director Rupert Wyatt isn't the alien invasion movie you think it is.
Captive State should be exactly the kind of movie I want to see more of. As much as we love superheroes, Star Wars, and the endless parade of easily exploitable ‘80s and ‘90s nostalgia that keeps manifesting as remakes, reboots, belated sequels, and even TV shows, quality, original genre films should be celebrated so they aren't lost in the shadow of the ever-expanding blockbuster calendar. So something like Captive State, from Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt, with its authoritarian overtones and eerie realism couched in its alien invasion premise should be a safe bet for a 2019 genre movie that keeps people talking all year. Unfortunately, it's not.

Captive State could very well be set in an alternate timeline of Arrival, one where the communication tactics of Louise Banks (Amy Adams) failed and the aliens stayed put to govern over humans. While this has happened worldwide, Rupert Wyatt’s grounded new sci-fi thriller specifically hones in on Chicago, where top government officials work with the alien forces in hopes of eventually getting off the “dying rock” that is Earth. Meanwhile, nearly-eradicated factions of the resistance aim to hold on to a semblance of hope that humanity will prevail as they fight back. With the kind of world-building that seems better suited for the pilot of a TV series, Wyatt peppers intriguing details throughout but gets too tripped up in a deluge of timely messages that he loses sight of his characters in this jumbled, peculiarly-structured narrative.

After last weekend saw the weekend box office top the same weekend in 2018 for the first time all year, this weekend looks as if it is going to be tight on that front. Disney and Marvel's Captain Marvel is certain to top the weekend yet again as it pushes over $260 million domestically in just ten days while Paramount debuts the animated feature Wonder Park, Lionsgate and CBS release Five Feet Apart and Focus releases the near-future thriller Captive State. Also looking at a top ten finish is Lionsgate's release of No Manches Frida 2, the sequel to the 2016 feature that debuted with over $3.6 million from just 362 locations. At the top for a second weekend in a row will be Disney's release of Marvel's Captain Marvel, which debuted with a strong $153.4 million last weekend and has been pacing relatively similarly to The Hunger Games since release. That, plus the -...

Pity the new movies that have to go up against Captain Marvel.
The first female-led superhero pic from Marvel Studios and Disney is expected to earn $60 million to $70 million in its second weekend of play at the North American box office, easily enough to retain the crown.
Captain Marvel has already zoomed past the $500 million mark in worldwide ticket sales, including nearly $190 million in the U.S. through Wednesday.
Opening nationwide this weekend are Paramount's animated family pic Wonder Park, CBS Films' teen drama Five Feet Apart and Focus Features' sci-fi adventure Captive State.
