Revisiting the murder mysteries of his award-winning 2013 feature, Stranger by the Lake, but with a more darkly comic tone found in much of his other work, French writer-director Alain Guiraudie’s latest, Misericordia (Miséricorde), plays like two films at once: The first is a sinister, small-town homicide story in the vein of Hitchcock’s Shadow of a Doubt, in which a man shows up to wreak havoc on the seemingly innocent. The second is a twisted variation on Pasolini’s Teorema, in which a family is torn apart by a visitor’s pervasive sexuality and refusal to leave them alone.
The two movies don’t always crystallize into one, and if you’re looking for a credible crime thriller in which everyone behaves logically, Misericordia may not be for you. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for an exploration of repressed sexual desire and religious hypocrisy in backwoods France,...

If you took a poll of movie lovers and asked for a list of the best actors of the past 50 years, Daniel Day-Lewis would certainly be among them -- he may even occupy the number one slot. The versatile performer has been wowing audiences with his all-in, committed performance style for decades, and legends are legion about the lengths to which he'll go to immerse himself in his characters.
But only one of his films has a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, and it's somewhat surprising: It's not "Gangs of New York," "My Left Foot," or even "In the Name of the Father," but 1985's "A Room With a View," directed by James Ivory. Set in the early 1900s, the film follows a young Englishwoman named Lucy (Helena Bonham Carter) and her chaperone (Maggie Smith) on a trip to Italy, where she ignites a brief relationship with a man (Julian Sands...

Jonny Greenwood is laughing at your luxury vacation TikToks. In a recent profile in The Guardian, the Radiohead guitarist and film score composer dug into some of his current influences, his most important collaborations, and why setting images of beautiful resorts and moments of wistfulness against his “Phantom Thread” score feels kind of funny.
“That’s hilarious!” said Greenwood when told by The Guardian about a recent trend featuring his glorious “House of Woodcock” piece being used for TikTok videos and Instagram memes. “It was written without guile. It’s not supposed to be a pastiche – those soaring strings are unashamedly beautiful, and one can’t help but find the music very affecting. Although even saying this makes me feel terribly pink and stiff and English.”
That traditional perception of English stiffness is something Greenwood has worked a great deal to avoid in his work despite having incredibly formal musical training.

File this evergreen headline under “no alarms and no surprises.” After working together on There Will Be Blood, The Master, Inherent Vice, Junun, Phantom Thread, and Licorice Pizza, Jonny Greenwood has confirmed he’s already started to work on the score for the next feature from Paul Thomas Anderson.
“I’m incredibly lucky that Paul indulges me and gives me so much time to experiment and compose,” Greenwood tells The Guardian. “That’s not usually the case in Hollywood, where the soundtrack writers are often very far down the food chain, and are sometimes given only a couple of days to bash out a complete score.”
This will mark the first time a Greenwood score will be heard in IMAX theaters as PTA’s currently untitled film has been set for an August 8, 2025 wide release from WB. With a cast of Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, Wood Harris,...

Jerry Seinfeld had lofty dreams for his film directorial debut. The comedian said on Tuesday he wanted to cast Daniel Day-Lewis as a sugar drug lord in his Netflix Pop-Tart comedy Unfrosted.
“We have a sugar drug lord who controls all the world’s sugar, his name is El Sucre,” Seinfeld explained during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! “I wanted Daniel Day-Lewis to play it like Daniel Plainview from There Will Be Blood,” a reference to Day-Lewis’ Oscar-winning performance as a ruthless oilman during the 19th and 20th century Southern California oil boom.
(There Will Be Blood is one of three Oscars that Day-Lewis has won; he was also knighted by the British monarchy in 2014.)
Unfrosted co-writer Spike Feresten previously mentioned the Day-Lewis dream to ScreenRant, saying, “We would watch There Will Be Blood, and that end scene, where they’re beating each other up with bowling pins, all...

When we think of the greatest actors who opted to retire, there are really so few that ended on a high note. Daniel Day-Lewis in Phantom Thread is the first one that comes to mind, but who else would even be close? Unfortunately, it isn’t Gene Hackman, who left Hollywood after a 40+ year on the screen following 2004’s Welcome to Mooseport…which is just about the most embarrassing way to cap off such a legendary career. Then again, maybe it’s just the sort of movie that would make you want to retire.
By the time filming began on what would be his last movie, Gene Hackman was in his mid-70s and had seen enough in the business to know who was competent and, well, who would be directing Welcome to Mooseport. As co-star Maura Tierney remembered, Hackman and Donald Petrie did not get along at all when making the movie.

In the summer of 2017, Oscar-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis surprised Hollywood, London and the entire entertainment world when he revealed that he retired from acting and would make no more films. His final performance in Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “Phantom Thread” (2017) brought Day-Lewis his sixth Oscar nomination, his eighth Golden Globe nom and his seventh BAFTA bid (losing all three to Gary Oldman for “Darkest Hour”).
One of the most respected actors of his generation, Day-Lewis is the only man who has won three Oscars for Best Actor. Those victories were for “My Left Foot” (1989), “There Will Be Blood” (2007), and “Lincoln” (2012). In fact he is one of only three men to win acting Oscars three times; the others are Walter Brennan and Jack Nicholson. In addition, he has won two Best Actor awards each from the Screen Actors Guild and the Golden Globes.

HBO had the Lakers, now FX has the Clippers. Will the series’ fates differ (as the real-life teams’ have), or will “Clipped” face the same quick, quiet end as “Winning Time”? We’ll find out this June, when FX’s latest ripped-from-the-headlines adaptation premieres exclusively on Hulu. The trailer was released Thursday, April 25 — just under six weeks prior to the premiere — and now you can watch the first footage below.
Set in 2013, the six-episode limited series stars Ed O’Neill as L.A. Clippers’ owner Donald Sterling and Laurence Fishburne as the team’s head coach, Doc Rivers. Formerly with the Boston Celtics (who won an NBA title in 2008), Rivers had just joined the Clippers when the owner’s racist comments went public, sending the organization into a tailspin and Sterling into a power struggle with Rivers, players, and the NBA at large. It may not be hitting theaters in North America until next month, but the Amy Winehouse biopic "Back to Black" is off to a solid start at the box office overseas. The film opened in the U.K. and Ireland this past weekend, and it managed to top the charts in the territory, coming in ahead of Alex Garland's "Civil War," which topped the domestic charts with a $26 million debut, as well as "Kung Fu Panda 4." It's an impressive start, but how will the film fare when it arrives in the U.S. in May?
Director Sam Taylor-Johnson's "Back to Black" topped the U.K./Ireland charts with $3.36 million (£2.7m). That was above "Kung Fu Panda 4," which was in its third weekend in the territory, while "Civil War" had to settle for third place. For anyone who witnessed her tumultuous rise to fame and eventual fall from grace, it’s clear that Amy Winehouse was truly one of a kind. A diamond in the rough that not only needed to be handled with kid gloves, but one who also craved love and attention from all the wrong people. Her sudden death at the age of 27 in the summer of 2011, while not entirely unexpected, was still a huge shock for most of us.
The story of how a bright and talented nice Jewish girl from North London became prime tabloid fodder and a global superstar, is told with a fair amount of contrivance in this slightly disjointed biopic from Fifty Shades of Grey director Sam Taylor-Johnson.

Since Cillian Murphy just became the first Irish-born actor to win the Best Actor Oscar, I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a list of the most notable Irish actors who have been honored by the Academy with either Oscar gold or a nomination.
1. Cillian Murphy
Murphy has played non-Irish roles so often and so well that some people may not realize or remember that he is Irish. His best Irish films include Breakfast on Pluto and The Wind that Shakes the Barley. And as noted above, he is the first Irish-born actor to take home an Academy Award in the Best Actor category.

Retired English actor Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the greatest actors in cinema’s history. Although picky, the actor won numerous accolades throughout his career. Most of his performances, if not all, have been critically acclaimed. The proof of this fact is that he has three Academy Awards, making him the actor with the most Academy Awards for Best Actor.
Back to the part about him being picky, Day-Lewis has rejected roles in some great movies. For instance, he rejected the lead role in 1993’s Philadelphia and the role of the vampire Lestat in 1994’s Interview with the Vampire.
Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot
Another such role that Day-Lewis reportedly rejected was Batman. Zack Snyder once approached the actor for a role in Man of Steel, and it was not until much later that he revealed which role it was.

Last year, Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for “The Whale,” which also won Best Makeup and Hairstyling for artists Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Annemarie Bradley. This is a combination of Oscar categories that have popped up several times over the years. But could it happen again this year? Well, theoretically, yes.
The brilliant makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turned Bradley Cooper into Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro.” Kazu Hiro landed himself an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside Kay Georgiou and Lori McCoy-Bell. Meanwhile, Cooper is nominated for Best Actor.
Along with “The Whale,” several other movies have done well with this pair of Oscar categories. In 2018, “Darkest Hour” won Best Actor for Gary Oldman and Hiro won Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick. In 2014, “Dallas Buyers Club” won both awards, too, with Matthew McConaughey winning for acting...

Ever since Daniel Day-Lewis made a rare appearance to present an award to Martin Scorsese, speculations have been spreading on the internet about his return to films with a Scorsese project. However, that dream may not happen anytime soon as one of the close friends of the actor has revealed that he is done with films. The revelation came from Day-Lewis’s My Left Foot director Jim Sheridan.

Daniel Day-Lewis will remain retired from acting, despite best efforts to lure him back. Apparently the actor is also most displeased with “streamers”.
We’ve known for a while that Daniel Day-Lewis, the actor known for roles in films like Phantom Thread, There Will Be Blood and Gangs Of New York, has retired from acting.
Just to be clear, nothing has changed on that front. In fact, we’ve simply got further confirmation that Day-Lewis is not looking to make a comeback of any sorts.
Director Jim Sheridan, speaking to ScreenDaily, said he still talks to Day-Lewis, but the actor isn’t interested in making another film.
“I’d love to do something with him again. He’s like everybody else, he opens up the streamers and there’s seven thousand choices, none of them are good. Film has been moved out of the public domain into a private domain – you have a remote,...

Three-time Oscar-winner Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the greatest living actors working today, which is why it’s puzzling to many that he decided to leave the profession altogether following the making of the Paul Thomas Anderson film “Phantom Thread.” The acclaimed drama earned Day-Lewis his sixth Best Actor Oscar nomination, playing a dressmaker who falls in love and places himself in a power-struggle relationship with his romantic partner.

Despite Martin Scorsese teasing a possible collaboration with his “Gangs of New York” star Daniel Day-Lewis, the famed Oscar-winning Method actor is still firmly retired, according to director Jim Sheridan.
Sheridan worked with Day-Lewis on “My Left Foot,” “In the Name of the Father,” and “The Boxer,” with “My Left Foot” landing Day-Lewis one of his three Best Actor Academy Awards. Day-Lewis officially announced his retirement from acting in 2017 with Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread” as his last film.
“He says he’s done. I keep talking to him,” Sheridan told ScreenDaily. “I’d love to do something with him again. It’d be great to see Daniel coming back and doing something because he’s so good.”
You know what’s not “so good”? Streaming content — and that medium’s takeover has (further) soured the serious actor on the entertainment business, Sheridan said.

It sounds like Daniel Day-Lewis is serious about his retirement from acting and won’t be returning, at least according to his longtime director Jim Sheridan. The Irish filmmaker directed three of Day-Lewis’ most prominent films: “My Left Foot” (1989), “In the Name of the Father” (1993) and “The Boxer” (1997). Day-Lewis won the Oscar for best actor with “My Left Foot” and was also nominated for “In the Name of the Father.”

Daniel Day-Lewis may have drank his last milkshake after all. Despite some chatter that the three-time Oscar winner may be coming out of retirement, director Jim Sheridan is quelling the rumors, saying that any meetings they have had weren’t what fans may have been hoping for.
Speaking with Deadline at the Doha Film Festival in Qatar, Sheridan – who directed Daniel Day-Lewis three times, more than any other director – said that he and the actor did in fact meet but it was for a project that would have found the actor working behind the camera. “We were talking about a project. Daniel was only going to be involved, if he did get involved, as an executive producer, not as an actor.”
As for what this mystery project even was, Sheridan said, “It was on the life of Joe Kennedy, the patriarch of the Kennedy family…we haven’t advanced it,...

Nobody loves a good tease quite like “American Horror Story” creator Ryan Murphy, and this latest one is for a horror project we didn’t even know existed until, well, right now.
It’s titled “Grotesquerie,” a new horror drama coming soon to FX.
Niecy Nash-Betts (“Dahmer”) will star in the upcoming horror series alongside Courtney B. Vance (“Lovecraft Country”) and Oscar nominee Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread).
Ryan Murphy also debuted a short teaser trailer for “Grotesquerie” on social media this afternoon, which features Niecy Nash-Betts talking over a blank screen. Her character says:
“I don’t know when it started, I can’t put my finger on it, but it’s different now. There’s been a shift, like something’s opening up in the world. A kind of hole at the center of nothingness. What I saw today… they sent shrinks for everyone who worked this crime scene.

“Peoor Things” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Costume Design with a win for period pictures at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Feb. 21. It prevailed over three of its Oscar rivals, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon” and “Oppenheimer” plus “Maestro.”
The fifth Oscar nominee, “Barbie,” won the fantasy/sci-fi race. The other CDG winner was the contemporary film “Saltburn”
In its 25-year history, the CDG has previewed only 12 of the Oscar winners for Best Costume Design: nine of these have been period pictures and three have been sci-fi or fantasy flicks. Of the last six Costume Designers Guild Awards winners three have gone on to repeat at the Academy Awards: “Cruella” in 2022, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” in 2021 and “Black Panther” in 2019.
Last year, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” pulled off an upset in the fantasy/sci-fi race over eventual Oscar champ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

It appears that Robert Pattinson’s much-awaited project, Mickey 17, has gotten the short end of the stick due to Warner Bros.’ massive gamble on Leonardo DiCaprio’s next flick. The Titanic star, 49, will be helmed by Paul Thomas Anderson in an untitled movie that is scheduled to start shooting in California this year. Even so, we can’t help but wonder if sidelining Pattinson’s flick was a wise choice in this regard.
Pattinson, best known for his role as Edward Cullen in the Twilight saga, has been carving out a niche for himself as a talented and versatile actor over the last few years. His performances in films such as The Lighthouse and Good Time received critical acclaim, so it is no surprise that fans are looking forward to this upcoming sci-fi film.

Determined to end the cycle of abuse that has already claimed their mother, the boys bury him in the forest. But returning later to the shallow grave, there is a problem. The body is not there. At the top of Episode 1 of Apple’s “The New Look,” a title card flashes some weighty words: “This is the story of how creation helped return spirit and life to the world.”
But Todd A. Kessler’s drama series is barely that. “The New Look” is largely insular, despite taking place during a turbulent era that still affects millions around the world, centering figures who certainly left their marks on culture and history — but the vague thesis statement sounds like just that; the kind of sweeping, half-formed idea that a high school student might retroactively tack on to the introduction of an essay.

Jumper, Justin Anderson’s first short, opened on a naked man bathing in a pool. Conceived in 2014 for the tenth anniversary of British fashion designer Jonathan Saunders, the film was a riff on Pasolini’s Teorema; it followed a lunar stranger who shows up uninvited at a luscious Spanish villa and upends the frigid lives of its tenants. Ten years later, the same idea and shot survive more or less intact in Anderson’s feature debut, Swimming Home, based on a 2011 Man Booker-shortlisted novel by Deborah Levy. Except this time the setting is a summer home on an unidentified Greek island, the nude intruder a young woman, and her target is not a whole family but its taciturn, haunted patriarch.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is to receive a theatrical release in Japan on March 29, more than eight months after it opened around the world through Universal.
Japanese distributor Bitters Ends confirmed the release date, which falls more than two weeks after the Oscars on March 10, where the film leads the race with 13 nominations.
Universal opened Oppenheimer on July 21 and it has taken $952m worldwide to date. But the release in Japan is highly sensitive as the biopic centres on the creation of the atomic bomb, which was dropped in Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, and was responsible for more than 200,000 deaths.

This year, there was an embarrassment of riches in the world-building of films, and it’s wonderful to partner with Roger Durling,...

There is plenty of precedent for performers to still earn Oscar nominations after snubs by the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes and SAG Awards. Last year, Andrea Riseborough became the latest Oscar contender to come out of nowhere when she reaped a Best Actress bid for “To Leslie.”
She joined a roster of 23 other performers who heard their names on Oscar nominations morning despite being repeatedly overlooked earlier in awards season. However, for all of those who overcame these earlier snubs the nomination had to be reward enough as none took home the Oscar.
(Note: Marcia Gay Harden won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Pollock” without any precursor bids. However, that was in 2001, the year before the Critics Choice introduced nominations. Frances McDormand won with that group for both “Almost Famous” and “Wonder Boys,” Kate Hudson took home the Globe for “Almost Famous” and Judi Dench prevailed at SAG for “Chocolat.

Daniel Day-Lewis has always been known for his method acting. For My Left Foot, in which he played a man with cerebral palsy, he wouldn’t leave his wheelchair and had people feed him. For Lincoln, he had cast and crew address him as Mr. President. And for Phantom Thread, we can only assume he actually ate poisonous mushrooms. So when he’s retired, you better believe he’s going to disappear. And that’s pretty much how it’s been, as the three-time Oscar winner has stayed off the radar. That is, until Thursday night, when he bestowed Martin Scorsese – who he has worked with twice – with the National Board of Review’s Best Director award. And with that came a tease for a hopeful third collaboration…

Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall and Sean Penn have been confirmed to have been cast in Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming untitled feature.
According to a source, the movie is said to be set in California in a contemporary setting and will be an ensemble piece.
Warner Bros, who are producing the movie, are keeping all other details on the project top secret. However, it is said that the production is set to be Anderson’s most expensive project to date with an estimated $100 million price tag.

Anderson, although a exceptional filmmaker is not known for his money making projects with the likes of ‘Phantom Thread,’ ‘Boogie Nights’ and ‘Licorice Pizza’ under his belt. In this instance it would seem that the bankability of DiCaprio is to be heavly relied on.

Ever since “The Holdovers” premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival, 21-year-old Dominic Sessa has steadily attracted heaps of praise for his debut performance as one of its central characters. Despite earning recognition from some critics groups, he now unfortunately sits as a BAFTA longlist contender with no other key industry precursor bids. However, there is plenty of precedent for performers to still earn Oscar nominations after snubs by the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes and SAG Awards.
Below, we list the 24 performers who pulled off Oscar nominations surprises after being overlooked earlier in awards season. However, for all of those who overcame these earlier snubs the nomination had to be reward enough as none took home the Oscar. Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie”) is the latest addition to this list for her Best Actress bid last year.

At long last we have confirmation on casting for Paul Thomas Anderson’s next feature. Back in 2022, it was revealed that his Licorice Pizza follow-up was planning to enter production in summer 2023, but strike-related delays have now moved the shoot to kick off this month.
Deadline now reports that Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Regina Hall will star in the film, which begins production on January 21 in California. Scripted by PTA, not much is known about the project, only that it will be set in the present-day (ruling out those Vineland adaptation rumors) and it will be “the most commercial one that PTA has attempted, with commensurate budget.” Variety specifically reports the budget could be as high as $100 million. Expect more casting announcements soon as it will be a large ensemble cast.
