From the original Mortal Kombat to Mortal Kombat 1, “Get Over Here” has become an iconic catchphrase among them. Basically, everything that Scorpion does has found a home in the hearts of people. One of his signature moves, when he harpoons the opponents through his Kunai rope dart, can raise the hair strands on anyone’s neck every time they hear it.
Little do they know, this could’ve become a matter of jokes today if the original concept had been added to the game. To that end, Scorpion might’ve become the cowboy running around, giving a loud “Yeehaw” instead of the original catchphrase. Maybe people would’ve given him a new alias, ‘Wonder Man’.
Mortal Kombat Would’ve Seen an Entirely Different Character

It is not a rare sight to see video games often collaborating with cinematic and other similar franchises that focus on a similar genre in order to entertain a larger audience. The same was the case when an unexpected collaboration between Mortal Kombat and DC came back in 2008, leaving fans shocked but glad as they enjoyed fighting against some of the most known superheroes.
What would have made such collaboration even better would be an animated movie, which is something that was actually pitched to Warner Bros, or WB as they own the copyright and trademarks to the superheroes. This was unfortunately shot down, depriving fans of what could have been a great experience watching the movie.

In a lot of ways, 2023 was a rough year for gaming. Mass layoffs across the industry impacted the most seemingly successful studios even as the cost of being a gamer continued to rise. Largely unchecked greed robbed many of their dream careers and more of their dream games. Events like the likely death of E3 and the continued (often failed) pursuit of a few major design trends at the Triple-a level stole a little of gaming’s identity and magic. There are times when it feels like you have to turn a blind eye to all of that if you want to just talk about the best games of the year.
Yet, it’s nearly impossible to not be impressed by the quality of 2023’s greatest games. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a year gift us with not just such an overwhelming number of modern...

Veteran international film executive Martin Moszkowicz will step down as chairman of the executive board of German mini-major Constantin Film after his current contract expires early next year. Deputy chairman Oliver Berben will take over the role.
Moszkowicz, who has overseen the production of the Resident Evil and Mortal Instruments franchises at Constantin will stay on as a producer with the Munich-based outfit after his contract as chairman runs out on Feb. 29, 2024. Moszkowicz has been part of Constantin’s management since 1990 and took over as chairman in 2014.
One of the most important figures in the European film scene, Moszkowicz has helped build up the company into a local giant — with such blockbuster German franchises as the Fack Ju Goethe trilogy of high school comedies — and a major international player, producing English-language titles including video game adaptation Monster Hunter, the family feature Black Beauty and the Mads Mikkelsen action thriller Polar.

Since 2018, creator group RDCWorld has organized an annual event series called Dream Con, which takes place in the group’s home state of Texas. The 2023 edition of Dream Con established several milestones for the yearly gathering: It was the first DreamCon to take place in Austin, and it drew the largest crowd in the convention’s history, with more than 20,000 attendees flocking to the Austin Convention Center.
Dream Con exists on several axes. On the surface, it’s a creator convention that provides a Texan complement to VidCon. For the members of RDCWorld, the three-day event is an opportunity to rub shoulders with like-minded creators and entertainment industry notables.
But at its core, Dream Con is a space for Black nerds — or “Blerds” — who love anime, video games, and sports. It’s a chance to hang with other members of that community and meet the people who are sharing Blerd...

Dark Fantasy Soulslike ‘Deathbound’ Has You Absorbing Fallen Warriors to Aid You in Combat [Trailer]
Those who enjoyed Cold Symmetry’s Mortal Shell (which most recently made its Switch debut) and its unique mechanics can look forward to Tate Multimedia and Trialforge Studio’s upcoming Soulslike Deathbound. Launching on Steam next year, Deathbound makes use of its Binding System to mix up its combat mechanics akin to Mortal Shell‘s playstyle.
Deathbound is set in a crumbling civilization where the clash between fanatical faith and unnatural science has decimated the world of Ziêminal and the great city of Akratya. You are the product of the Essencemancers, a zealot sect of scholars of the forbidden knowledge to deceive death itself. However, this deception has come at a cost. You are now in a race against time to face your creators before the powerful Church of Death captures them and executes them as heretics.

It looks like Vampire Academy will remain staked after Peacock canceled it in January.
Executive producer and showrunner Marguerite MacIntyre shared an update on the efforts to find a new home after the cancellation.
Since the cancellation, MacIntyre has remained optimistic that the show could return in some capacity.
However, the latest update is somber as the former Vampire Diaries star said she "doesn't see any avenue" forward to keep the show alive.
"I have been wanting to say this for a very long time," MacIntyre said in a video posted on Twitter.
"Again, thank you for all your love for the show."
"Thanks for the incredible support. Thanks for you sticking with us through a lot of thin lately."
She continued, "I don't have good news. I don't see any avenue forward."
"And I just feel like now is the time to say I'm sorry about that; it wasn't for lack of trying.

Universal loves its Dracula movies.
With “Renfield” out in theaters this week – with Nicolas Cage playing the blood-sucking monster legend – the studio has debuted a new trailer for “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” which Universal notes is based on a single chapter of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel.
“Based on a single chilling chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula, ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’ tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo—fifty unmarked wooden crates—from Carpathia to London,” reads the film’s synopsis.
The new film, out in August, is directed by André Øvredal (“Mortal” and “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark”) and written by “Escape Room” screenwriter Bragi F. Schut and “Bullet Train” screenwriter Zak Olkewicz.
“Strange events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship.

My Hero Academia Season 6 Episode 24
“And you call yourselves heroes?”
Any series with a cast as big as My Hero Academia is going to face balancing issues where certain characters get underserviced or completely abandoned. Ochaco Uraraka is one of the first friends that Midoriya makes in My Hero Academia. The anime’s first season implies big things for this budding hero, but she’s been significantly sidelined and Uraraka fans are lucky to get two episodes a season that put her in the spotlight. Uraraka’s Zero Gravity is on the stronger side of abilities, yet she’s seldomly involved in any of the show’s big villain brawls.
Audiences have accepted that it’s unlikely that Uraraka will use her Quirk to defeat Shigaraki, but in “A Young Woman’s Declaration” she makes use of an even greater power–empathy–to...

When I first saw the title Viking Wolf, Vikingulven in its native Norwegian, I had visions of Norse lycanthropes raiding and pillaging their way up and down the coast. Sadly that isn’t what it’s about although it does begin with a prologue, shot like a silent film for some reason, showing a raiding party under the command of Grim Gudbrand storming an abbey.
The monks warn them against going into a locked room and assuming it to be filled with treasure, smash down the door and find a snarling red-eyed wolf cub. Of course, they take it with them, and by the time their longship returns home, it’s the only thing left alive on it.

An adaptation of Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy novels is heading to streaming TV. Here’s how you can enroll with the Peacock service to catch all the supernatural (and romantic) action.
Hailing from from executive producers Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries, The Originals) and Marguerite MacIntyre (The Originals), Vampire Academy promises a story of friendship, romance and danger. In a world of privilege and glamour, the friendship between two young women — Rosemarie “Rose” Hathaway and Vasilisa “Lissa” Dragomir (played by Sisi Stringe and Daniela Nieves) — transcends their strikingly different classes as they prepare to complete their education and enter vampire society.

Each of the first four episodes of Vampire Academy, the new YA series from creators Julie Plec and Marguerite MacIntyre, opens with a quick sequence outlining the three principal roles that characters occupy. The first are the Moroi, vampires who have magical Elemental powers, but are basically powerless to defend themselves. Then there’s the Strigoi, who are Moroi that have turned evil and adhere to characteristics that audiences traditionally associate with vampires such as bloodlust and aggression. Finally, there are Dhampir guardians – half Moroi/half Dhampir who have sworn to protect the Moroi from the Strigoi.
If that primer is confusing, Vampire Academy only gets more convoluted from here. The 10-episode Peacock adaptation of Richelle Mead’s bestselling fantasy romance series is overstuffed, overcomplicated and often nonsensical, especially in its first half.
We open at a party that introduces Lissa Dragomir (Daniela Nieves), a Royal Moroi, and her best friend Rose Hathaway,...

"Pom Poko" is as much a war movie — with casualties on both sides — as "War for the Planet of the Apes" is, except it passes the Six Laugh Test as a comedy and centers on shapeshifting raccoon dogs with occasional parachute scrotums. If that sounds like a recipe for something special, it is.

If there’s one weapon out there that people don’t fully understand or even think is that useful, it’s the rope dart. Well, there are a number of weapons that fit that description, but the rope dart is one that looks as though it might be a little too impractical. In the hands of a skilled practitioner, though this weapon can be downright lethal since much like any weapon, practice and precision are absolutely necessary to the success that one can have with it. But if anyone has ever taken the time to notice, this weapon has been popular in Mortal

On the surface, it might appear that little changed with home viewing this weekend. At least as far as can be told with “In the Heights” (Warner Bros.) on HBO Max. Even with theaters of great interest, unlike its disappointing gross, results at home remain a mystery.
But a second glance reveals a few nuggets of note. A handful of new releases arrived, including “Queen Bees” (Gravitas Ventures) on Premium VOD, which also placed in the theatrical box-office top 10.
Meanwhile, some positions suggest how different pricing strategies may have an impact on results, including possible consumer resistance to prices higher than normal. That might be the case with “Mortal Kombat” (Warner Bros.).
“Wrath of Man” (United Artists/$19.99) edged out “Nobody” (Universal/$19.99) as the top performer. Both had two #1 placements across the charts. But “Wrath” did slightly better, taking two #2 positions, while “Nobody” was #3 on two charts. (See the rankings below.

This weekend saw the debut of two appealing studio titles, neither of which will be in theaters. “Without Remorse,” Paramount’s relaunch of their Tom Clancy franchise and “The Mitchells vs the Machines,” from Sony Animation, launched on Amazon Prime and Netflix, respectively, free to subscribers. On the Netflix chart, “Mitchells” immediately placed at #1.
The cinemas could have used their momentum. Last weekend, “Mortal Kombat” and “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” surpassed expectations with openings over $20 million. This weekend, the only new release was horror film “Separation,” which earned $1.8 million. “Mortal” and “Demon.” each fell over 70 percent.
It isn’t unusual for big openers to drop half or more in their second weeks, but new competition opening is usually a contributing factor. It also appears that the titles’ audiences showed less crossover interest. Total business for the weekend will be around $24 million, about 60 percent less than last week.

“Mortal Kombat” bested “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train” this weekend, but exhibition was the real winner. Both R-rated films targeted the action audience, and they both doubled their pre-opening estimates with a combined gross of $42 million.
The total for all revenues will come to around $55 million, which is 25 percent better than any weekend since theater closures began and ahead of March 13-15 last year, the weekend before exhibition shut down. It’s a significant step on the steep climb toward recovery.
“Mortal Kombat” took in an estimated $22.5 million — more than “Tenet” grossed in its first eight days. That’s $6 million more than “Wonder Woman 1984” — over Christmas weekend, no less. Per the first-day survey, the moviegoers were predominantly young, male and non-white.
This achievement also came while being available on HBO Max, and while many theaters are still not open. Perhaps most impressive is it succeeded...

“Mortal Kombat,” which hits theaters and HBO Max on April 23, marks Lewis Tan’s first time leading a major blockbuster — and it’s not a role he took on lightly.
Tan, a martial artist and actor who performs his own stunts in action-heavy roles in “Iron Fist,” “Into the Badlands,” “Wu Assassins” and “Deadpool 2,” has a legacy to protect. His father, Philip Tan, is also a martial artist and stunt coordinator, and Lewis has prided himself on choosing roles that present the stunts authentically.
Your character, Cole Young, is not one that’s in the games. Tell us about him.
If you’re familiar with the game, you know that the game started with only a few characters, and now the game has expanded into a “Mortal Kombat” universe if you will, and there’s over 100 characters. So, in the movie, we wanted to introduce something new and at...

With theaters slowly reopening and April approaching, the new Mortal Kombat movie will explode. If you have HBO Max, then you can watch it when you get home after the theater. About 10 hours into a November 2019 flight to Australia and the set of Warner Bros. Mortal Kombat reboot, I started to ask myself whether this was all worth it. I loved the original Mortal Kombat movie about as much as anyone unironically can, but the fact remains that the history of live-action video game film adaptations is paved with disappointment. Even the best movies in that field have earned their reputation largely by exceeding low expectations.
After nearly 30 years of failed attempts, it’s hard to even picture what a good live-action video game movie might look like. What is it about the transition from sprites to screen that makes this process so difficult? Is this a pursuit that is, in some ways, doomed to be dictated by those who see such films as another piece of merchandise? What will it take to finally break the curse? Those questions raced through...

Batman: Soul of the Dragon sounds like an interesting departure from the usual slate of DC animated movies. The story is set during the 1970s and follows a young Bruce Wayne on the path of martial arts mastery. We’ll see him training with and battling other elite martial artists, including Richard Dragon, Ben Turner and Lady Shiva, all of whom are under the tutelage of O-Sensei.
We don’t know too much about the plot just yet, but the synopsis has teased that the students will have to face off against “a deadly menace from the past.” Who this is remains a mystery, but given the location the film is set in, the kung fu movie tone and the 1970s time period, I think the chances are good that the menace will be a bare-chested Ra’s al Ghul.
Now, we have the first clip from the pic, showing...

The erratic world of VOD consumption saw a lift this week with debuts of “The New Mutants” (Disney) and “Unhinged” (Solstice), films that were the first wide releases when theaters began to reopen in August. Ninety days later, normal windows dictate that it’s time for non-premium availability. (They each rent for $5.99.)
Disney’s Marvel spin-off took the top spot at Apple TV and FandangoNow, while Russell Crowe’s stalker thriller is #1 at Google Play. Two items of note: “Mutants” shows its strength by taking the top spot at Fandango, which ranks by revenue, not transactions; that’s impressive for a standard-price title. Unlike “Mutants,” “Unhinged” had a PVOD release and now sees a revival at its lower price.
These two titles were the only ones to place on three charts. (Spectrum’s weekly chart lags behind and will likely show them next week.) “Unhinged” placed #2 and #3 elsewhere, while “Mutants” was #5 on Google.

Four VOD titles reached #1 in a week with scattershot results across the board. “Mortal” (Saban), a contemporary action film with Nordic mythology roots, took first place at Apple TV. Meanwhile, the PVOD prison drama “The Informer” (Vertical) repeated at #1 at FandangoNow, Paramount’s horror entry “Spell” is first at Spectrum, and romance “After We Collided” from Briarcliff bested at Google Play. “Mortal” is a standard price entry, while “The Informer” is at $19.99 premium, with “Spell” at $9.99 finding a middle ground.

Every year, movie-preview pieces herald the holidays’ arrival; in 2020, the headlines are a little different. As USA Today proclaimed, “10 Must-See Movies to Stream Over the Holiday Season.” They include “Soul,” “Mank,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Let Them All Talk,” and “Small Axe” — major awards contenders, many of which would have have been theatrical releases. However, they all belong to streamers, not VOD.

In “Mortal,” a film plagued by assorted crises and confusions of identity, one stands out at the very beginning: It’s an R-rated superhero movie that assumes its audience doesn’t know the meaning of its title. An introductory chyron helpfully offers the single dictionary definition “a human being,” without going into any of the others. That doesn’t bode well for a wealth of words or ideas in Norwegian director André Øvredal’s allegedly original adventure, which starts on a chilly, mildly intriguing note before sinking into its own puddle of very, very familiar reference points. This is an origin story we’ve seen before, and not just in the generic sense: Its protagonist is a strapping young man in Norway who reveals, early on, the power of thunder and lightning in his fingertips.
If you haven’t put two and two together, buckle up: You might be in for a ride.
