Despite “Barbie’s” recent box office domination, the history of toy-to-film franchises has not always been easy. Often dismissed as a cash grab (“Battleship”) or popcorn fare, turning toys into critically and commercially successful content is no skate in the park.
For Mattel and co, there was another toy that had to walk before “Barbie” could fly: Lego. Written and directed by Lord and Miller, “The Lego Movie” proved that movies based on toys could be so much more than a 90-minute commercial when it was released ten years ago. Although snubbed at the Oscars (not even garnering a nomination for best animated film), the Warner Bros. pic — like its eventual successor “Barbie” — was a hit with both audiences and critics.
Buoyed by “The Lego Movie’s” success, a string of spin-offs and sequels quickly followed – “The Lego Batman Movie” and “The Lego Ninjago Movie” in 2017 and “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part...

"Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" (read our review here) is now streaming on Max, and its arrival on streaming marks the official end of the old Dceu once orchestrated by Zack Snyder. Now, new DC films are in the hands of James Gunn and Peter Safran, with new actors coming in to play familiar DC heroes in brand-new stories. The old Dceu is now a thing of the past, and a reminder that reverse-engineering a superhero cinematic universe to compete with Marvel isn't an easy task.
And what of Aquaman? Jason Momoa's aquatic hero only got two movies of his own, but he appeared in a total of six. This might have you wondering: what the heck is the correct order to watch all the movies with Aquaman in them? If you're ready to sit down and watch "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," but want that question answered first, you're in luck!

Director Mike Mitchell gave an update on if he would be interested in returning to the franchise for The Lego Movie 3.
The last main entry in the saga (The Lego Movie 2) was released in 2019, and its story saw tense sibling (in the form of teenagers Finn and Bianca) frustrations playing out as an apocalyptic event for the fictional Bricksburg. The tale somehow got even crazier than the first installment, adding aliens and time travel to the mix.
While the sequel did not resonate quite as much as the original did, it still sits at a respectable 84% critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Disney is a huge conglomerate with stakes in every genre of films and shows. The House of Mouse has established itself in genres such as sci-fi with Star Wars, animation with Pixar and Disney Animation, and the superhero genre with Marvel. The company also acquired Fox Studios, thus owning the Avatar franchise as well.
While Disney has been the parent company of these studios, they largely operate on their own. Hence, when Kung Fu Panda 4 director Mike Mitchell was asked if his Kurt Russell starring superhero film Sky High would get a sequel, he mentioned that it would make more sense for Marvel to take over and develop the film as Disney wanted Marvel to be in charge of superheroes.

The Eternal Sunshine and Being John Malkovich screenwriter has adapted a picture book for his debut family film about being afraid of the dark
A mainstream children’s movie from screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, creator of Being John Malkovich and Synecdoche, New York? It has to be worth a look, if only for the pleasure of wondering how much of his own adult neurosis has crept in. For this DreamWorks/Netflix family animation, Kaufman has adapted a picture book by Falmouth-based British author Emma Yarlett, and Sean Charmatz makes his feature directing debut, having worked chiefly on storyboarding films such as SpongeBob SquarePants and The Lego Movie 2.
It is about an unhappy little kid called Orion (voiced by Jacob Tremblay), who is afraid of pretty much everything: putting his hand up in class, being bullied, causing the toilet to overflow with an immoderate bowel movement, talking to the girl he...

Let’s get this out of the way right away. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is not on this list. Despite what was initially planned, the sequel to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will not be coming to theaters in March, or any time in the upcoming year.
However, the loss of one exciting film does not mean 2024 will be short of great animated movies. In its place will be cartoons to meet the needs of every type of moviegoer, from franchise continuations to adaptations of beloved works to new entries. Given the complex nature of animated films, many of these don’t yet have firm release dates.
Still, animations enthusiasts have a lot to look forward to this next year. Here are the big movies you need to watch out for…

The cinematic DC Universe has always been pretty confusing, but it’s gotten even moreso in the past few months. James Gunn and producing partner Peter Safran oversee DC Studios and a new DC Universe, while the studio also continues to release DC superhero movies made by a previous regime. But let Jason Momoa, star of the upcoming “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” break things down for you.
Momoa was on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon and when Fallon asked if there would be a third film in the franchise, Momoa said: “This is kind of like the end of this DC Universe.” Watch below:
Of course, after Momoa said that, he said, “Unless… I mean things have happened before. If people like it…” before trailing off. He then transitioned to an impression of a lugubrious Warner Bros. exec as he said, “There will always be a place for me at DC.

Paul McCartney and Gaumont have assembled an all-star creative crew for “High in the Clouds,” the long-awaited feature adaptation of McCartney’s children’s adventure novel.
Boasting six original songs by McCartney, the family adventure movie, which is budgeted at €28 million, will be directed by Toby Genkel (“The Amazing Maurice”), scored by Michael Giacchino and penned by Jon Croker (“Paddington 2”), with Patrick Hanenberger tapped as production designer. McCartney will voice one of the main characters. Two other major music stars are in advanced talks to come on board.
Production will begin during the first quarter of 2024 and delivery is expected for the first quarter of 2026. Gaumont is producing with McCartney via his banner Mpl Communications.
The English-language feature follows the journey of a headstrong teenage squirrel, Wirral, who lives in Gretschville, a city where music has been banned by a diva-owl, Gretsch, who wants to be the only singer in town.

The "X-Men" movie "Dark Phoenix" was hurt by upheaval at its studio, 20th Century Fox. The film was developed during the merger between Fox and Disney; in fact, "Dark Phoenix" was released on June 7, 2019, early into the new management's tenure. During that theatrical run, it made only $254 million on a $200 million budget, ultimately losing $133 million in the worst bomb of 2019.
It's tempting to think Disney undermined "Dark Phoenix." The movie was released as a lame duck, the last product assembled before all Marvel properties were back under Disney's umbrella. Marvel Studios would've doubtlessly preferred not to inherit a completed "X-Men" film, so that they could get to work on their own versions of the characters (even if the Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought back some faces from Fox's "X-Men" movies since).
However, The Hollywood Reporter indicates there was another player who helped doom "Dark Phoenix" — James Cameron.

Dora and Boots are headed to theaters in a new short film debuting with Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie.
Dora and the Fantastical Creatures marks the first time an animated iteration of Dora has hit theaters, following the live-action 2019 feature Dora and the Lost City of Gold, which starred Isabela Merced as Dora.
The short sends Dora (Diana Zermeño) and Boots (Asher Spence) on a journey to the land of alebrijes, which according to the logline is a place full of “most magical and colorful creatures in the rainforest. There, they must band together against Swiper (Marc Weiner) to save the beloved alebrijes and their Copal Tree Celebration.”
Dora and the Fantastical Creatures will lead into a new CG animated series, Dora, which will stream on Paramount+ in spring 2024, and also air on Nickelodeon. The film also voice stars Anairis Quiñones as Luna Arcoiris, Danny Burstein as Sol, and Kate del Castillo as Ale.

Two of the UK’s top comedy stars, Richard Ayoade and Jonathan Ross, have received backlash on social media after reviewing The It Crowd writer Graham Linehan’s memoir.
Irish scribe Linehan has gone from the writer of much-loved Channel 4 comedies The It Crowd, Father Ted and Black Books to an outspoken anti-transgender activist in recent years, leading many in the UK and Ireland to boycott him.
His book, Tough Crowd, has gone on pre-sale on Amazon this week. Its reviews section displays favorable quotes from talk show host and writer Ross and actor-director Ayoade, who starred in The It Crowd between 2006 and 2013. The last 12 months have been filled with pain for Warner Bros. A merger with Discovery earned its CEO, David Zaslav, ugly headlines and the disdain of many in Hollywood. Most of its theatrical releases have been misfires, including one of the biggest bombs in studio history with “The Flash.” This century-old studio is in need of a hero.
So here comes “Barbie” to the rescue.
Since the studio released its “2001: A Space Odyssey”-inspired teaser trailer alongside “Avatar: The Way of Water” this past winter, Greta Gerwig’s comedy about the most famous doll ever made has captured the attention and imagination of millions and, with the help of Universal’s “Oppenheimer,” has turned July 21 into the most talked-about date on the film release calendar.
That date is finally drawing near and box office projections show that online hype is converting to dollars and cents in a big way.

Plenty of fans make art inspired by their favorite pop culture, but few end up getting the seal of approval from the original work’s creator. That’s what happened to one fan of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” who recreated the movie’s trailer entirely in Lego form and got a huge thumbs up from the film’s co-writer and co-producer, Phil Lord.

Paramount will open Nickelodeon’s “Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem” not on Friday, August 6 but on Wednesday, August 4. It’ll still go head-to-head with Jason Statham and Wu Jing’s “The Meg 2: The Trench” opening that Friday. Moreover, it still won’t get any Imax or Plf screens even for those first two days since those auditoriums will be going to Chris Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” or (if circumstances justify it) Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” or Disney’s “The Haunted Mansion.” However, it’s the latest big theatrical release to opt for an extended Wed-Sun weekend instead of a conventional Fri-Sun debut.
Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” decided to open two days early and ended up with a $146 million Fri-Sun frame and a $204 million Wed-Sun debut. Does that mean the film might have nabbed the first $200 million animated opening weekend had it opted for a conventional Fri-Sun frame? Perhaps, since...

To celebrate the release of the action-comedy spectacle of the year Cocaine Bear – on 4K Uhd & Blu-ray May 29th – we have a 4K Uhd up for grabs!
From Director Elizabeth Banks, comes the “Uproariously entertaining” (Flickering Myth) story inspired by the time an actual bear did cocaine. The comedy-laced, high-octane film phenomenon stars Keri Russell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Margo Martindale (American Crime Story), and the late Ray Liotta (Goodfellas) in “a thrilling binge of adrenaline” (TheWrap).
Inspired by the 1985 true story of a drug runner’s plane crash, missing cocaine, and the black bear that ate it, this wild dark comedy finds an oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists and teens converging in a Georgia forest where a 500-pound apex predator has ingested a staggering amount of cocaine and gone on a coke-fueled rampage for more blow … and blood.

Dreamworks Animation got some help from Jack Black, Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake to highlight its upcoming slate, including Trolls Band Together — a new movie from its Trolls franchise set to open Nov. 17 — and Kung Fu Panda 4, slated for a March 8, 2024 release.
Jack Black — the voice of panda Po — got a hero’s welcome as he took the stage to introduce Kung Fu Panda 4. He described the story for the spring 2024 release via a comedic and dramatic monologue: “Po faces his biggest challenge ever. Will he survive?”
Black shared that Po is set to become the spiritual leader of his Valley of Peace, but also needs a succession plan for his role as the chosen Dragon Warrior. In the story, he also will train a new kung fu practitioner and meets a villain called the Chameleon who can summon villains from the past. “Po has to defeat every one of them,...

Dracula has made his way from the novel to the big screen, and it gives us chills to watch this horrendous persona in theatres, but ‘Renfield’ is an exception. Directed by Chris McKay, who is famous for ‘The Lego Movie’, ‘The Lego Batman Movie’, and ‘The Tomorrow War’, and with a cast that boasts Nicolas Cage, Nicholas Hoult, Brandon Scott Jones, and Ben Schwartz, ‘Renfield’ seems worth the hype it has created. Here are 5 reasons why you shouldn’t miss this movie:
Nicolas Cage as Dracula would be enough to make any movie a must-see! Hell Yes!
Watching Nicolas Cage as Dracula on the Big screen is the type of entertainment that you cannot miss. “Some call me The Dark One. Others, the Lord of Death. To most, I am Dracula,” he growls as he makes his dramatic entrance. It almost feels like he was Born to play this role.

While the eye-rolling cheese of Batman & Robin certainly has its defenders, movie adaptations of the Caped Crusader have largely adhered to one rule: be serious. Since that 1997 movie ended the four-movie run that began with the relatively dark and gritty Batman from 1989, every subsequent big-screen take on the Dark Knight has been increasingly grumpy and grounded. The Christopher Nolan Dark Knight trilogy starring Christian Bale gave thorough explanations for every part of the mythos, Zack Snyder’s Batman played by Ben Affleck showed us what Batman would be like in a dystopia filled with adherents of Ayn Rand’s Wikipedia page, and Robert Pattinson’s Batman writes dark journal entries about the filth infecting Gotham City a la Frank Miller.
There is, of course, one shining exception to the rule. Lego Batman, voiced with pitch-perfect pompousness by Will Arnett, made his debut as a supporting character in The Lego Movie and The Lego Movie 2,...

Child actor Brooklynn Prince caught a lot of attention and racked up the award nominations – and took home some of those awards (including a Critics Choice Award win that came along with an acceptance speech that went viral) – for her performance in her second film, The Florida Project, back in 2017. She has earned several more screen credits in the years since, and can be seen in the recent release Cocaine Bear (read our review Here). And now, at just 12 years old, Prince says her “nerd dreams” have come true, as Sumerian Comics, a major publisher of comic books and graphic novels, has picked up her comic book pitch Misfortune’s Eyes!
Written by Prince and Aliz Fernandez, Misfortune’s Eyes will be unveiled at Mega Con in Orlando, Florida next week. Prince will also be speaking on a panel at the convention.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie expected to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom with an $85M-$90M 5-Day opening
The box office is about to feel the power of a Super Mushroom when The Super Mario Bros. Movie butt stomps into cinemas. According to Deadline, Illumination/Universal/Nintendo’s Mario movie is advancing toward an $85M-$90M Easter holiday weekend opening. The 5-day opening tracks the film for Wednesday through Sunday, casting a wide net to add as many golden coins to its purse as possible. I’ll tell you this, though. I would not be surprised if The Super Mario Bros. Movie makes over $90M during the 5-day window. Like, way more.
Fan responses to The Super Mario Bros. Movie trailers have been outstanding, with many planning to rush to theaters as soon as it opens. I plan to see the movie immediately, preferably at a late-night screening to avoid a kid-dominated crowd. Speaking of the kiddos, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is tracking well with boys and girls under 12 equally.

During today's Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment released the newest trailer "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," based on the world of the Mario video game franchise. We haven't seen a Mario Bros. movie since the monstrosity (I say that with love) that was the 1993 live-action "Super Mario Bros.", and before that, the Japanese anime film "Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!" from 1986.
This time around, we have Chris Pratt voicing the diminutive Italian plumber instead of voice actor Charles Martinet, who has voiced Mario, his brother Luigi, and so many other characters since 1992. (Martinet will reportedly lend his voice in a cameo role in this movie.) As for the plot, we know the kingdom of Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) and many others (including the penguins we saw in the teaser trailer) are in trouble. Bowser (Jack Black) is trying to take over all the galaxies,...

The R-rated horror-comedy directed for Universal by Elizabeth Banks has broken out as one of the early success stories of 2023, affirming that original features, and those in the comedy arena, can certainly still perform in today’s marketplace. Based loosely on real events that took place in 1985, the film watches as a duffel bag’s worth of cocaine drops from a drug smuggler’s plane and winds up in a Georgia forest, becoming a favorite snack for a hulking black bear. An electric set of unfortunate souls, including Prince, Keri Russell and Christian Convery, are then subject to the animal’s murderous rampage.

We’re given a detailed look at the hustle and bustle of the city and treated to many familiar sights and easter eggs as Mario works his way through obstacles in a literal adaptation of the video game platform levels. Anya Taylor-Joy is lending her voice to give life to Princess Peach in the upcoming The Super Mario Bros. Movie. To prepare for the role, the Queen’s Gambit star turned into a gamer.
“So now I am a gamer, and it’s really fun,” she told Modern Luxury San Diego. “Ideally, I like playing at arcades, because, again, it’s like cinema; I love the ceremony. I’ll go with a whole bunch of friends. And we’ll just spend hours at the arcade.”
Taylor-Joy will join a star-studded cast that will voice the iconic characters. The cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

The first teaser trailer for "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" gave us the "wrong-sounding Muppets" version of Mario voiced by Chris Pratt, a fantastic portrayal of Toad by Keegan-Michael Key, an army of penguins from Super Mario 64, and the crushing reveal that in this movie, Mario Mario has no ass. Fortunately, the second trailer is a massive improvement, teasing worlds, characters, and iconic moments dating all the way back to Mario's introduction in the 1981 "Donkey Kong" arcade game.
Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" boasts a ridiculously stacked cast including Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike, and yes, Chris Pratt as Mario.

Not everything is just peachy in the world of “Super Mario Bros.”
The Nintendo movie adaptation, from Universal and Illumination, stars Chris Pratt and Charlie Day as plumber brothers Mario and Luigi. The duo set out to save Princess Peach, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, as Bowser (Jack Black) and Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) stand in their way. Keegan-Michael Key voices Toad.
“Super Mario Bros.” is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, both “Teen Titans Go!” alums. The screenplay is written by Matthew Fogel, who penned “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part” and “Minions: The Rise of Gru.”
The film first garnered controversy over the lack of Italian voice acting casting, namely with Pratt as Mario. Producer and Illumination Studios founder and CEO Chris Meledandri curbed any casting doubts over the lead star.
“We are collaborating with Chris and his experienced team to not just create a character-licensed film,...

In a world desperately crying out for some sort of hero to save them, only one man stepped up and answered the call: Chris Pratt voicing the world-famous video game character Mario.
A few months removed from when we received our first look (listen?) of Illumination and Universal's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," resulting in a strangely compelling trailer that mostly had everyone talking about how thoroughly unremarkable Pratt's take on the stereotypically Italian plumber really was, viewers around the globe now have a better idea of what to expect from this animated adaptation of one of the most popular video game franchises ever made. But while some may have held out hope for a last-minute, absurdly reactionary creative change in response to those vocal hot takes — refer back to that whole "Sonic" design snafu — it certainly appears that pipe dream will remain exactly that. Honestly, you almost have...
