If he has the option between the Croisette or the Lido, Paolo Sorrentino is going to… France. His Cannes journey began with 2004’s The Consequences of Love, followed by 2006’s Friend of the Family, his masterwork Il Divo, his misstep of 2011’s This Must Be the Place, 2015’s Youth and the two-piecer Loro He returns with a piece of cinema that we could equate to the sweet summer breezy demeanor and while Parthenope lays it on thick with its pristine-looking flair, but how did our critics think about it’s center? Celeste Dalla Porta toplines in what will be a complete early career boost.…...

Gary Oldman took the opportunity to clarify his comments about his acting in the “Harry Potter” franchise during the Cannes press conference for his new film, “Parthenope,” on Wednesday.
When asked about a prior comment in which he disses his performance as Sirius Black as “mediocre,” Oldman said he didn’t mean to “disparage anyone out there who are fans of ‘Harry Potter’ and the films and the character who I think is much beloved.”
“What I meant by that is, as any artist or any actor or painter, you are always hypercritical of your own work,” he continued. “If you’re not, and you’re satisfied with what you’re doing, that would be death to me. If I watched a performance of myself and thought, ‘My God, I’m fantastic in this,’ that would be a sad day.”
He continued, “There was such secrecy that was shrouded around the novels,...

Paolo Sorrentino embraced the stars of his latest film “Parthenope,” including Gary Oldman, Celeste Della Porta and Stefania Sandrelli, as the film received a 9.5-minute standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday night.
Tears streamed down the face of Della Porta, who plays the title character, and Sorrentino looked visibly moved as he addressed the crowd.
“For me, this movie is a celebration of the journey of my life,” he said. “I want to thank [Cannes general delegate] Thierry Fremaux for the beginning of my journey in cinema 20 years ago.”
His film “The Consequences of Love” premiered at Cannes two decades ago, and the Italian auteur has certainly made his mark on the festival since. He won the festival’s jury prize in 2008 for “Il Divo” and the prize of the ecumenical jury in 2011 for “This Must Be the Place.” Sorrentino has now had seven films compete for the prestigious Palme d’Or.

It’s no secret that Paolo Sorrentino is profoundly obsessed with the topics of youth and great beauty. Such preoccupations — and several more! — are self-evident in films like “Youth” and “The Great Beauty,” two unbridled displays of Italian maximalism that are every bit as subtle as their titles suggest.
Following 2021’s achingly personal “The Hand of God,” in which the Neapolitan director filtered the agony and the ecstasy of his formative years through the same veil of Fellini-esque sacrilege that he’d previously cast over movies about Silvio Berlusconi and the fading splendor of Roman history, Sorrentino is back on his proverbial bullshit with another sprawling flesh parade that’s more consumed with abstract ideals than it is with the stuff of life itself. Once again, he returns with a rapturously sumptuous film that blurs the line between the sacred and the profane until sex feels like religion and religion feels like sex,...

Paolo Sorrentino has done a wide range of films but until his most personal, The Hand of God two years ago (a prize winner in Venice), he had not returned to Naples, the land of his youth, except for the very first feature he made, 2001’s One Man Up. Since then though, he has been to Cannes with his films six times, and his impressive list of movies have included The Consequences of Love, Il Divo, Loro and his Oscar-winning The Great Beauty. There have been more mixed reactions for his starry English-language films like Youth and This Must Be the Place, but Italy seems to drive his creative mojo and may be closest to his heart in the current phase of his filmmaking career when he has found new inspiration by going back to his youth, first in Hand of God which closely reflected his own coming of age in Naples,...

According to a royal commentator, the king’s not keen on the idea of speaking to Archie in an “ordinary” phone call or making a video call to the Sussexes.

In 1991, when Debbie Gibson’s underrated third album, Anything Is Possible, stalled at #41 on the charts, the New York Times printed a full-page obituary for her relatively brief career titled “The Perils and Perishability of a Teen Idol.” In just a few short years, Gibson had gone from America’s sweetheart—anointed the youngest artist to write, produce, and perform a #1 hit—to being declared a pop casualty by the nation’s newspaper of record.
Only two years earlier, the Long Island teen had scored her biggest hit, “Lost in Your Eyes,” the lead single from her sophomore effort, Electric Youth. The album is arguably the weakest of Gibson’s four Atlantic releases, largely eschewing the sleek dance-pop and of-the-moment freestyle and hi-Nrg stylings of 1987’s Out of the Blue in favor of ostensibly more mature piano ballads and Motown-lite, which zapped her music of the exuberance that made her debut so charming.

Exclusive: We are hearing that DC Studios is planning to test actresses soon to star in Supergirl, and that Milly Alcock, Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly are in the mix.
There is a chance the studio could make a straight offer to a star, but all things are pointing toward screen tests for actresses, which will go down within the next month or so, we hear.
Deadline understands that natch, DC Studios co-boss James Gunn is definitely part of the process, as this is a character who likely will make its debut via a cameo in a DC project that isn’t Supergirl. The search is ongoing for a director.
Alcock is best known for her lead role on HBO’s Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon, playing Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. She is repped by CAA, Shanahan Management, Entertainment 360 and Curtis Brown.
Jones, repped by CAA and Brillstein,...

Bram Inscore, a songwriter, producer, and performer who worked with such artists as Beck and BTS, has died by suicide, according to his family. He was 41-years-old and no other details were made available.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Bram Inscore, who ended his life after a hard fought battle with depression,” read a statement from his family, wife and friends. “Bram was a ‘musician’s musician,’ a producer, composer and multi-in,strumentalist, who lent his talents to artists such as Beck, Troye Sivan, and BTS. Selfless as a human and generous as a collaborator, he ingeniously served the music but never his own ego. Deep compassion and dry wit were embedded into everything he did, though he never sought praise or approval. He was truly a unique spirit and though his soul has left his body, it will live forever in his music.

Apparently, over Christmas King Charles III will make his “good relationship” with Prince William “very clear.” An author expects the monarch to highlight he “at least has a good relationship with one son,” the 41-year-old Prince of Wales. Meanwhile, things between King Charles and Prince Harry reportedly haven’t changed much. Not since the Duke of Sussex, along with Meghan Markle, called to wish the king a happy birthday in November 2023.
The Wales family is going to be ‘very visible’ at Christmas as King Charles highlights his ‘good’ relationship with William
Christmas for the royal family, like many others, means getting together for a big meal and, of course, presents. However, for them, it also means navigating optics amid years of tension with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
The world can expect King Charles to play up his “good relationship” with William come Christmas, per author Tom Quinn.

Even if you don’t know James Hamilton’s name, you probably recognize some of his images. Over a career that has spanned seven decades and seen his work published in Harper’s Bazaar, The New York Observer, New York Magazine and The Village Voice, Hamilton has photographed music and film superstars, legendary directors, notorious criminals and powerful politicians, as well as wars, famines and revolutions.
Hamilton is also humble to a fault, making him a perfect focal subject for D.W. Young’s new documentary Uncropped. Ostensibly a biography of and tribute to Hamilton’s life and work, Uncropped is most interesting when it uses its subject as a bit of a Trojan horse. Yes, Uncropped achieves its goal of raising Hamilton’s profile and celebrating the genius within his work. Chinese director Wang Bing found joy in latest film “Youth (Spring),” focusing on young textile workers. But as he continues to work on his trilogy, things might get a bit darker.
“Their age is one of the factors here: they are so young and it’s just a happy time in your life. You are experiencing so many things, for example romantic relationships. Their actions are not entirely controlled by rationality, which made for vivid footage,” he tells Variety ahead of traveling to IDFA, where he is this year’s Guest of Honor.
“But here’s the thing – this trilogy is not finished yet. I will finish the second and third part by 2024 and they are not the same [as the first]. Maybe when it is completed, it will feel completely different?”
Despite winning multiple awards over the years, including Locarno’s Golden Leopard for “Mrs. Fang,” making films hasn’t necessarily gotten easier,...

Israeli filmmaker Tom Shoval has expressed his growing fears for Gaza hostage, former actor and friend David Cunio and called on the Israeli government to explore all possible ways, including a ceasefire, to secure his release and that of all the hostages.
Cunio, his wife, three kindergarten-age children, sister-in-law and her young daughter were among more than 200 people abducted by Hamas, during its brutal terror attack on Southern Israel on October 7, which killed 1,300 people.
“I try to think from which sense I need to talk. Should I be careful or brave, frontal or complex. What angle will serve the cause that is what I need right now? In the midst of disaster, I don’t need sides, right or wrong, I need action,” Shoval wrote to Deadline in a heartfelt message.

Veteran French editor Dominique Auvray says there’s an essential intuitive element to her work. The woman who created the sound for “Paris, Texas” and cut such films as “No Fear, No Die,” “L’Amour Fou,” and “Hu-Man” says her career has been built around one key ability: Tuning in to your eyes and ears.
Speaking at the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival this week, the longtime collaborator with seminal French director and author Marguerite Duras said, “I think the first thing when you are an editor, you have to look and to listen. And to listen at the same time to your heart and your head. And to listen to the director. And to listen to what the images say, you know.”
Auvray says she approached her work on the definitive Duras films “Le Camion,” “Woman of the Ganges” and “Le Navire Night” this way, and is still listening...

Thurston Moore has offered an update on the “debilitating” health condition that forced him to cancel the book tour he had slated for this fall. Speaking in a new interview, the Sonic Youth co-founder said that he’s not too worried about the ailment, as “the prognosis is very good.”
The revelation came in a conversation with The New York Times published earlier this week, in which Moore explained that he has been suffering from a common heart rhythm abnormality called atrial fibrillation for several years. In the past, the condition has been manageable, but according to Moore: “This year, it became slightly concerning… I was finding myself at times to be so weak I could hardly walk around the neighborhood.”
Though Moore felt that he “could just power through it” in order to embark on the tour promoting his new memoir, Sonic Life, doctors felt otherwise and advised him not to fly.

Israeli actor David Cunio is believed to have been abducted by Hamas alongside his wife, 3-year-old daughters, sister-in-law and niece during Saturday’s massacre.
Cunio, who made his debut in Berlinale-premiering feature film “Youth” in 2013 alongside his twin brother Eitan Cunio, was a resident of Nir Oz, a kibbutz in Southern Israel that was the scene of some of the worst atrocities perpetrated by Palestinian terrorists.
Cunio’s brother-in-law, Aharon Aloni, told CNN that the actor woke up to the sound of bombs on Saturday morning and sought refuge in his home’s bomb shelter alongside his wife Sharon, the couple’s 3-year-old twin daughters, Sharon’s sister Danielle and her 5-year-old daughter Amelia. But after terrorists set fire to their home the family were forced to flee and have not been seen or heard from since, leading officials to believe they are among the 150 people who have been abducted into Gaza.

Wang Bing might not have released any new films in the last half-decade, but that is only because he’s been hard at work shooting his new trilogy. Captured between 2014 and 2019, the director’s new project documents the social and economic transformation of 21st-century China through the eyes of young migrant workers laboring in textile factories in the town of Zhili, outside Shanghai. Youth (Spring), one of two new films from the director to premiere at Cannes alongside Man in Black, will now get a theatrical release from Icarus Films starting on November 10 at Metrograph and the first trailer has arrived.

Acclaimed director Wang Bing, this year’s guest of honor at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, will be using his IDFA platform to highlight nonfiction cinema of his native China.
The festival, which runs from Nov. 8-19, announced the 10 films Bing has selected to be screened at IDFA – one of the perquisites of being named guest of honor. Among the documentaries he’s choosing to highlight are Old Men (1999), directed by Lina Yang; Wheat Harvest (2008), directed by Tong Xu, and IDFA Bertha Fund-supported Last Train Home (2009) by Lixin Fan, “documenting the millions of migrant factory workers that travel home for Spring Festival each year.” (Scroll to see Bing’s full top 10 list).
Director Wang Bing attends the Cannes Film Festival May 19, 2023.
The documentaries chosen by Bing “and their politics are subtle in their film language,” IDFA noted in a release, “representing a wave of filmmaking rarely shown internationally.

Speaking about his underseen 1970 film British Sounds, Jean-Luc Godard said it was important that the bourgeois heard oppressive factory noise the working class must endure every day. This made me think of a job I had right after graduating university nearly a decade ago. Not wanting to leave Montreal for personal reasons, but limited in work opportunities due to my lack of French, I––in desperation––took work at a warehouse assembling light fixtures. Lasting from the middle of 2014 to the early months of 2015, my overwhelming memories of that time (beyond its general misery) are the sounds. In particular the radio which was on all day, as fellow workers and I weren’t allowed to listen to anything with headphones or earbuds. Working an eight-hour shift and finding out that Top 40 radio does, in fact, just play practically the same 9 or 10 songs over and over––thus hearing Taylor Swift’s...

The 551-minute 2002 film, Tie Xi Qu: West of the Tracks, telegraphed its intentionality both through its politics, starkly depicting the lives of factory workers and the strain put on Shenyang’s industrial Tiexi district, as joblessness loomed. The film’s intuitive, necessarily lo-fi aesthetic allowed the artifacting visuals of its Dv shooting format to become a conduit through which to further imagine the fate of the eroding spaces of the danwei.
The monumental achievement of West of the Tracks galvanized the field of Chinese independent documentary in the early 2000s to such a degree that a new generation of filmmakers seemed to form almost instantly and take specific cues from Wang’s DIY ethos.

One of my most anticipated races this Grammy season is for the newly added Best Pop Dance Recording award. The category is meant to honor pop songs with strong dance and electronic elements, and was likely established to avoid the Best Dance/Electronic Recording category becoming a pure popularity contest. When big stars like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, or Justin Timberlake were nominated there against true electronic musicians, it often favored the pop acts. So with this new category, the Recording Academy can give a fair shake to both and nominate even more great material. But who exactly will be the contenders?
Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” could arise as the potential front-runner. She’s a previous winner with both dance/electronic voters and pop voters, and the song will likely be the biggest hit eligible in the category. Of course, sales alone can’t win you a Grammy, but...

After a one-year hiatus, the much-missed El Gouna Film Festival (Oct. 13 – 20) is back and poised to make an increased impact. Joining beloved festival director Intishal Al-Timimi this time around is esteemed Egyptian producer-director Marianne Khoury in the artistic director position.
Khoury’s long-time championship of female filmmakers and themes finds an echo in the impressive first wave of programming just announced. Of the 19 features, 10 boast a distaff helmer or co-director.
The kudo-laden titles include “Anatomy of a Fall” from Justine Triet, “On the Adamant” from Nicolas Philibert, “Scrapper” by Charlotte Regan, “Stepne” from Maryna Vroda and “The Strange Path” from Guto Parente, which claimed every prize in Tribeca’s international competition.
Among the other buzzed-about auteur titles are Todd Haynes’ “May December” and Wang Bing’s epic documentary “Youth.” Emerging talents Tibor Bánóczki and Sarolta Szabó offer dystopian hybrid-animation “White Plastic Sky,” while a robust documentary selection includes Tatiana Huezo...

Twitch is well-known for its focus on video games, but a different platform seems to have a greater impact on teens’ gaming habits. A report from Precise TV and Giraffe Insights shows that 76% of teenagers who watch creators play video games do so on YouTube.
Precise TV and Giraffe Insights surveyed 1,000 people between the ages of 13 and 17 to compile the Precise Advertiser Report – Teens & Youth (Party). Many of the findings in the report relate to the consumption of gaming content. While 76% of respondents watch other players on YouTube, only 40% watch on Facebook. Twitch ranked third on that axis with a 34% share, while rival Kick reached 20% for the first time.
One factor driving YouTube’s success among gamers is its sheer scale. 93% of teens play video games, according to the Party report, and 82% of teens watch YouTube, which compares favorably to the 65% share earned by TikTok. Based on these percentages, it...
