Welcome to the 259th episode of TV’s Top 5, The Hollywood Reporter’s TV podcast.
Every week, hosts Lesley Goldberg (West Coast TV editor) and Daniel Fienberg (chief TV critic) break down the latest TV news with context from the business and critical sides, welcome showrunners, executives and other guests, and provide a critical guide of what to watch (or skip, as the case may be).
Here’s how this week’s episode plays out:
1. Headlines
Will Ferrell, Anthony Mackie, Seth Meyers, The Other Black Girl and Not Dead Yet lead the week’s non-upfronts TV industry headlines.
2. Upfronts: Amazon, Netflix
The streamers officially made their first in-person pitches to Madison Avenue ad buyers and the strategy Amazon employed — a ton of news! — vs. Netflix’s approach (they’re the culture!) couldn’t be more different.
3. Upfronts: Legacy media companies (aka everyone else)

In a surprising move, Hulu has announced the cancellation of The Other Black Girl after just one season. The series, based on Zakiya Dalila Harris’ bestselling novel, aimed to bring a haunting yet realistic portrayal of workplace dynamics through its thrilling narrative. We really wanted for it to be unclear what is the actual scary part. Obviously, there’s the twist that’s happening, but also, it’s being gaslit in your office! shared Harris in an interview with The New York Times, reflecting on her creative vision. The Plot Intricacies The show focuses on Nella (played by Sinclair Daniel), an editorial assistant

The Other Black Girl will not return.
Hulu has canceled the comedy series based on the book of the same name by Zakiya Dalila Harris after a single season, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
First put in development in April 2020 before Tara Duncan signed on to serve as president of Disney’s Bipoc-focused studio Onyx Collective, the 10-episode satirical comedy about the publishing world dropped its full season in September to impressive reviews. The series currently has an 86 percent rating among critics on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences seem to have rejected The Other Black Girl with that score sitting at a lackluster 50 percent among viewers.
Danielle Henderson (Sorry for Your Loss) originally was set to serve as showrunner but was ultimately replaced by Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey. Exec producers on the series included Onyx’s Duncan, Rashida Jones, Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey, Adam Fishbach and author Harris.

Since the pandemic, Black female-driven content with universal appeal has found a home on Hulu. Stepping away from the cliched stories that have too often defined others’ efforts, each new project from the streamer, be it “The 1619 Project” or the recent “The Other Black Girl,” grows increasingly more ambitious. “Black Cake,” produced by Oprah Winfrey, pushes the boundaries even further by centering on a biracial, immigrant woman’s experience.
Adapted from Charmaine Wilkerson’s New York Times-bestselling novel of the same name, the sweeping eight-episode family drama from showrunner Marissa Jo Cerar revolves around a Jamaican Chinese woman who has lived an epic life spanning various parts of the globe. The problem is: Her past has been kept hidden from her children. Only through a flash drive of audio recordings played after her death do they learn that they know very little of her story. As their mother unravels her life from the grave,...

"The Other Black Girl," Hulu's new series based on the best-selling novel by Zakiya Dalila Harris, is an important addition to the streamer's arsenal as a show that centers on the hostile environments that Black women can face in the workplace. It's a near-universal experience for many Black women and is finally being represented on screen.
But when the show takes a turn and reveals the main villain to be another Black woman perpetuating violence against her own community, the show falls short, creating a world where Black women are pitted against each other. As a Black woman who has often been the "only" in workplace settings, the experiences that Nella (played by Sinclair Daniel) goes through at Wagner Publishing resonated. But, unlike Nella, I always had Black colleagues to lift me up, not keep me down.
I have always found that the Black women I worked with had my back.

Zakiya Dalila Harris rarely saw another natural-haired Black woman in the office. But one time it did. She was an assistant editor at Knopf Doubleday, a publishing group within Penguin Random House, and a woman stepped into the bathroom. Instead of a serendipitous smile, though, Harris received the cold shoulder from her colleague.
“I definitely thought we’d have some kind of, ‘Hey,’ the nod, and that didn’t happen,” Harris recalls. “I ended up going back to my desk and started writing this book.”

Zakiya Dalila Harris’ novel “The Other Black Girl” has hit the small screen in ten episodes filled with songs that support the story’s underlying message of compromising identity and Blackness in a majority-white workplace. Developed by Harris and Rashida Jones, who contributed the intro montage, to Episode 7 set to Anita Baker’s “Sweet Love,” the series crosses multiple genres from comedy to thriller and provides social commentary on how minority Poc employees compromise and navigate the social system of corporate America.
Set to Sza, TLC, Busta Rhymes, H.E.R., Janelle Monae and more, many scenes in the show become even stronger with the songs in the background. Co-showrunners Gus Hickey and Jordan Reddout left the ending open for a potential second season. The suspense and humor go hand in hand with the soundtrack for “The Other Black Girl.”

We’re halfway through September, which means the most entertaining show on TV is back: Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show.”
The Emmy-winning drama starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon returned this week for its 10-episode third season, which picks up two years after the events of the Season 2 finale. Naturally, this means big changes are happening, not just at the fictional network within the show, which is struggling after launching a streaming service right as the pandemic hit the U.S. (the series loves its “ripped-from-the-headlines” approach to storytelling), but for the actual show as well. Emmy winner Jon Hamm joins the cast as tech billionaire Paul Marks, who takes an interest in Uba (and perhaps a little bit more), while Nicole Beharie portrays new “Morning Show” anchor Chris Hunter. The first two episodes are currently streaming on Apple TV+, and with so much drama already beginning to unfold,...

Based on the suspenseful novel by Zakiya Dalila Harris, Hulu and Onyx Collective’s “The Other Black Girl” tackles the issue of systemic racism in the workplace through a thrilling lens. Produced by Rashida Jones, the show follows Nella Rogers (Sinclair Daniel) as she battles microaggressions and the isolation of being the only Black girl at Wagner Books. That is until the publishing house hires Hazel May McCall (Ashleigh Murray). Grocery list, to-do list, honey-do list, Christmas list; everybody loves a good list. Now, Hulu users are getting a list of their own. On Thursday, the Disney-owned streaming service unveiled its new “Top 15 Today” list across all TV, desktop, and mobile devices. The streamer follows in the footsteps of Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max, which introduced its own top-10 list just two weeks ago. These types of lists have long been a favorite feature on Netflix and other streaming platforms.

First reported by Vulture's Josef Adalian, Hulu’s list will differ slightly from most of its competitors’ as it will factor in both how many people are watching a title that day, as well as its general popularity across the platform, according to a Hulu source.

Zakiya Dalila Harris’ 2021 best-selling fictional novel has already been adapted by streaming giant Hulu. Even with Zakiya being an integral part of developing The Other Black Girl for the screen, according to fans of the book, the show takes many liberties for a screen-friendly presentation. The 10-episode series of about 30 minutes each dropped all at once on Hulu on Wednesday, giving us the opportunity to binge-watch the whole thing in one sitting. This seemed like a bad decision, and we’d have preferred to watch it a little bit slowly. Read our full review to know why. The Other Black Girl joins a list of satirical-horror media, the likes of Get Out and The Stepford Wives, and we can tell because of the self-aware name-calling within the show.

Disney’s Hulu has jumped on the trend of releasing the most-popular trending titles on its service — but instead of the usual top 10 lists for movies and shows, it’s lumping both into one top 15 ranking.
Hulu on Thursday launched “Top 15 Today,” a collection of trending movies and TV series that will be updated daily. Topping the first list are Hulu original series “Only Murders in the Building,” starring Selena Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short, followed by FX’s “Welcome to Wrexham” and Hulu’s “The Other Black Girl.” Three “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies, starring Johnny Depp, are on today’s list: the first installment, “The Curse of the Black Pearl”; “Dead Man’s Chest”; and “At World’s End.” (See full list below.)

Can one small thing address systemic racism in the workplace? Probably not, but The Other Black Girl presents a unique idea woven into a tale of anxiety and dread. Adapted from a book of the same title that was released as recently as 2021, The Other Black Girl sets out to be a workplace thriller that follows a young black woman in the publishing industry. In reality, it plays out more like a satire than a thriller, and the nail-biting stuff is far more limited in comparison to the relentless workplace humor. I found the first half of the show especially captivating. The pacing is great, and there’s an element of mystery, but at the same time, there’s also a lot of fun stuff, like getting to know our main character, Nella, who is quite delightful.

Every minority in the good old U.S. of A has heard or internalized that damaging myth: There can only be one. One model minority, one diverse member of the team (or cast) — and in Hulu’s “The Other Black Girl,” one editorial star at Wagner Books, as long as she falls in line. “The Other Black Girl” is a rarity for Black women in scripted television. The latest series from Onyx Collective to premiere on Hulu, this psychological thriller and satire tinged with horror offers a rare and provocative look into the challenges facing Black women within the larger white society, while also exploring their internal tensions through a mainstream premise.
Adapted from the 2021 book of the same name from Zakiya Dalila Harris, the show centers two Black women working in book publishing, widely acknowledged as one of the least diverse industries in the country. Nella Rogers (Sinclair Daniel) is a promising young employee at Wagner Books, with eyes on becoming an impactful editor like her idol Kendra Rae Phillips, the publisher’s first and only Black editor to date, did back in the early 1980s. Across much of corporate America, it’s taken almost for granted that things have been “getting better” for racial minorities: that there are more Black voices in positions of influence than there ever have been; that diversity and inclusivity are more prized than ever; that every generation of trailblazers and role models begets the next; that no matter how unjust things remain, they’re still better than they were three or four decades ago. And sure, some of it might even be true.
But there’s a special frustration to being told all this when you can see with your own eyes that it isn’t always the way things are, to being instructed to just wait your turn, to gritting your teeth in the meantime. Hulu’s The Other Black Girl, set largely in the lily-white territory of book publishing, taps into that tension with every genre in its...

You won’t know whether to laugh or scream — it’s Ok to do both — during The Other Black Girl, Hulu‘s sensational comic thriller, adapted from Zakiya Dalila Harris’ buzzy bestseller. A tonal rollercoaster, the series unfolds over 10 blissfully brisk half-hour chapters that keep a binge from feeling like a slog, as the series morphs from a Devil Wears Prada-style workplace satire into an audacious, radically charged twist on The Stepford Wives weirdness. Just try not to cringe when a mentor tells Nella (the endearingly eager Sinclair Daniel), an ambitious editorial assistant at New York’s very white Wagner Books publishing house, “You just need a little polish.” She has already endured so many patronizing micro-aggressions as Wagner’s sole Black employee, doing the bidding of her unctuous boss and almost never feeling seen or heard, that you share Nella’s delight when the chipper, hip Hazel (Ashleigh Murray...

These elements kick off Hall’s full and rewarding day as the head of hair department for “The Other Black Girl,” the new Hulu series that premieres September 13.
Tapping into her background working in the hair salon world from 2000 to 2015, Hall wanted the set’s hair trailer to be a safe, sacred environment akin to a Black beauty shop, a community hub where Black women gather for a sense of liberation, vulnerability, and empowerment.

If you’ve ever worked in an office, you’ll likely vibe with Hulu’s The Other Black Girl, a dark comedy tinged with suspense and moments of outright disbelief. Literary legend Toni Morrison once called racism a distraction. “It keeps you from doing your work,” she said during a 1975 speech. “It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being.” Black people must contend with everything from blatant acts of racist terrorism to small microaggressions that filter into our everyday lives. Instead of existing, you find yourself in a state of constant emotional regulation and survival, one that is exhaustingly unfair and unsustainable. For people of color and Black folks navigating predominantly white spaces, this constant state of code-switching and performance can quickly become horrific and soul-sucking.

Did you fall for the Steven Avery saga with Netflix’s Making a Murderer? Did you demand justice and, in doing so, throw Steven’s unwitting victims under the bus to do it?
Well, Candace Owens has helped put together another view of that docuseries, including how court transcripts and voice recordings were manipulated to paint a picture fitting their narrative rather than allowing the evidence to speak for itself.
Prepare to be taken on a journey through witness and Avery fan interviews that will upend the narrative. Was he wrongly imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit? Absolutely. But that’s not the whole story.

When The Other Black Girl hit bookshelves June 1, 2021, it was already a phenomenon. The manuscript went through a 14-way auction, eventually landing at Atria for a seven-figure deal — and an adaptation was already in the works at Hulu after a similarly competitive bidding war. The novel became an instant New York Times best-seller.
Zakiya Dalila Harris wrote the thriller (her first) from her own experience as one of two Black people on her floor of the Penguin Random House offices, where she worked as an assistant editor. The book’s protagonist, Nella, is drawn to new hire Hazel in hopes they can bond over racism at the fictional Wagner Books before realizing that Hazel has sinister intentions.
Harris took a break from writing her next novel to speak with THR about what it’s been like to work on the adaptation — which premieres Sept. 13 on Hulu and counts Rashida Jones as an executive producer.

As always,...
