Since the days of finger painting stories on cave walls, storytellers have known the secret of telling a quality fable. If your characters have flaws, they will resonate, even the villains.
One-dimensional characters just don't cut it, even if they're relegated to a distant, supporting role.
Some pundits are decrying the use of the deeply flawed character as an overdone trope that should die an ignominious death.
Yet, here we are, with the most acutely compromised characters reigning supreme on our TV screens and reverberating throughout our social interactions.
The art of creating the 'grey' character isn't going away any time soon, as this list of 13 deeply flawed characters clearly demonstrates.

"I would say 90% of our text chain with Dan Stevens is just 'I Think You Should Leave' references and memes," estimates Tyler Gillett, co-director (with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin) of the upcoming ballerina vampire movie "Abigail." And it didn't just stay in the text chain. Stevens himself says that on set, "When we weren't shooting gory scenes, we were just generally quoting 'I Think You Should Leave.'"
The obsession with the bizarre, mind-warping Netflix comedy series was so deeply ingrained that even the look for Stevens' character, Frank, was formed around a certain sketch from "I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson." Frank is tasked with overseeing a heist crew who have been hired to kidnap the daughter of a very wealthy man and hold her to ransom. He's not there to make friends, and he's not a very nice person. He is, you might say, a piece of s**t.

“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” (Tas Rights Management), with three added songs, came out for rent (at $19.89) on the singer’s birthday (an unusual Wednesday release for PVOD). It scored well, with two #1s (both Google Play and Vudu), as well as iTunes initially. But in a surprise, “Killers of the Flower Moon” (Paramount for Apple) is back atop iTunes, while holding on well elsewhere.
Both #1s are noteworthy, as well as another factor: An unexpected decision from Universal. Normally, even as a decent performer (it has grossed $88 million), “Trolls Band Together” would have come to PVOD after three weeks in theaters. But it’s actually only available on December 19, after its fifth weekend in theaters. That took it away from competition until close to Christmas.
Curiously, “Eras” at this point is not for download, with no word on whether that will be added for last-minute gift giving. It’s...

Leave the World Behind Ending Explained: What Is Really Happening In Netflix’s New Mysterious Thriller?(Photo Credit –IMDb)
The new project coming from Sam Esmail, the creator of Mr. Robot, is a film full of mystery that might actually be tapping into the worst fears of the modern era and be more realistic than we think.
What Is The Origin Of Leave The World Behind?
The creation of Leave the World Behind comes from a very interesting source. The film is an adaptation of a novel written by Rumaan Alam. The novel is filled with even more mystery than the film, and in some ways, it makes the film look clearer and more forward in comparison. Alam’s novel follows a very similar series of events. However, the movie suggests a more direct explanation of what is happening. Meanwhile, the novel avoids even talking about what is really happening.

This Weekend’s What To Watch List Is A Cinematic Mix of Laughter, Thrills, and Festive Surprises(Photo Credit –IMDb)
In this week’s cinematic lineup, viewers can anticipate a diverse range of releases, from the festive cheer of “Merry Little Batman” to the suspenseful drama of “Leave the World Behind” and the heart-stopping, horror-inducing narrative of “Thanksgiving.” However, it’s worth noting a somewhat unexpected scarcity of Christmas-focused movies in this listicle. Despite the historical trend of feel-good holiday films during this season, the current offerings showcase an intriguing mix of genres, encompassing not only Christmas tales but also comedy, action, thriller, and horror. The cinematic choices are indeed varied, ensuring a plethora of options for audiences seeking entertainment beyond the traditional yuletide fare.
Whether you’re in the mood for laughter, adrenaline-pumping action, spine-chilling thrills, or heartwarming moments, this listicle unveils a cinematic smorgasbord that goes beyond the anticipated Christmas movie lineup.

Park Chan-wook's Decision to Leave is exclusively showing on Mubi in many countries in the series Luminaries.Decision to Leave. It’s been a great pleasure and privilege to talk with Park Chan-wook for my ongoing interview project. This project, which has involved 4,000 conversations with visual artists, architects, poets, film directors, and novelists, aims at bringing all the art forms together, pooling knowledge to create a polyphony of art and culture of our time.In these interviews, there are often recurrent questions about unrealized projects and advice for future artists, but I particularly emphasize beginnings: How does an artist begin? How does someone come to art, or to cinema, or to architecture? What’s the first film, the first artwork, that the artist feels is when they found their own language?I’ve known director Park Chan-wook since Joint Security Area (2000) all the way through Lady Vengeance (2005) and The Handmaiden...

Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail has assembled an impressive cast for his thriller Leave the World Behind that includes Julia Roberts (Homecoming), Ethan Hawke (The Black Phone), and Mahershala Ali (True Detective). Netflix will be giving the film a limited theatrical release on November 22nd, with the streaming release to follow on December 8th – but a premiere screening was recently held, and the embargo on reactions has been lifted. Judging by the first reactions that have made their way online, it looks like Leave the World Behind might make for a divisive viewing experience.
First, we have a few positive reactions that describe the film as “wildly riveting and entertaining” and “absolutely amazing”, saying it has a “smart script”:
Welp, I’m going to be obsessed with #LeaveTheWorldBehind. (Or I guess I already am?) What a uniquely and expertly crafted and photographed disaster/apocalyptic story. (I absolutely must read the book now.

Warner Bros. Discovery has laid off top diversity executive Karen Horne, a rep for the company confirmed to TheWrap on Friday.
Horne is the latest senior executive laid off at the studio as it conducts massive restructuring under CEO David Zaslav, following the much-protested June 20 axing of longtime TCM executives Anne Wilson, Dexter Fedor and Genevieve McGillicuddy.

Christine McCarthy’s abrupt departure from her post as Disney’s chief financial officer was attributed to a family medical leave, but insiders say there’s more to her exit than her husband’s poor health, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
While McCarthy’s husband has been in a healthcare facility since early this year, a person familiar with her situation told the Journal there have been no dramatic changes recently that would drive her to step down. But there were signs of strife coming from the CFO’s office before the House of Mouse announced Thursday that she’d be leaving that were perhaps buried in the glowing comments that accompanied the announcement of her depature.
“Christine McCarthy is one of the most admired financial executives in America, and her impact on The Walt Disney Company during 23 years of dedicated service cannot be overstated,” CEO Bob Iger said in a statement Thursday.

Cross-cultural misunderstandings about in Alex Herron’s atmospheric fable about a young woman looking for her roots in a far-off land. A thriller dressed up as a horror film, perhaps to please Shudder, Leave is the first serious venture into fiction for the director, who is best known for his music videos – and, indeed, it uses the black metal scene as a backdrop in places. Although most of the action takes place in his native Norway, it’s mostly filmed in English, which other characters speak for the benefit of its American-born heroine, and is squarely aimed at an international audience.
She is Hunter (Alicia von Rittberg), found in a graveyard as a baby in an overblown opening scene which might have been lifted from one of Herron’s videos. The cross around her neck is interpreted as a Satanic symbol and causes consternation, but Raylan (Clarence Smith), the man who finds her,...

Everyone in Hollywood seems to have a unique story about how they got there. J. Lee, who plays Lieutenant Commander John Lamarr in "The Orville," is no different. He's bounced around Hollywood since 2005, mostly getting bit parts with generic titles like "Partygoer 1" and "Bouncer" -- or even worse, uncredited appearances.
In 2017, Lee finally got his big break. He was cast as Lamarr in Seth MacFarlane's sci-fi comedy/drama and loving homage to "Star Trek." The role has allowed Lee to show off his range with a character that is both bright and charismatic. "I think it's cool to see different sides of John," Lee said discussing his character while on the Quantum Drive podcast. "I kinda made a joke in the first few episodes, like 'Leave it to Lamarr' because he's scrambling, trying to figure out ways to fix things, fix a problem, whatever, so it's been cool.

"Bring me the head of that kind detective." Mubi has debuted their own new official trailer for Decision to Leave, one of the best films of the year opening in theaters this fall. It's the latest from acclaimed Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, originally premiering at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival where Park won the Best Director prize. It was my favorite film of this year's festival, an impeccably made intriguing story of love and murder. A detective investigating a death in the mountains meets the dead man's mysterious wife in the course of his dogged sleuthing. It's not as shocking or as crazy as Park's previous films, but it's still a remarkable film anyway. Starring Tang Wei, Park Hae-il, Go Kyung-Pyo, and Lee Jung-Hyun. I wrote in my Cannes review: "More than a detective story about solving crimes, Decision to Leave is a masterful, exquisite romance that makes your heart beat faster.

More than 300 industry delegates from top shingles including Warner Bros Discovery, Viaplay, Germany’s Constantin Film, The Match Factory and France’s TF1 Studio are expected on the shores of Haugesund, Norway, over Aug. 23-26, for Scandinavia’s major film showcase, New Nordic Films.
Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winner “Triangle of Sadness” will both open the film confab festivities and screen alongside 18 new Nordic finished films at the market. But for the avid buyers and programmers of Nordic content, the biggest draw will be the 18 works in progress – half of them looking for sales and distribution – and 23 pics in development available for co-production and financing.
“We’ve noticed a shift in recent years, with buyers and sellers favouring the Works in Progress and Nordic Coproduction Market over the market screenings. These seem to be more valuable for the industry,” said Gyda Velvin Myklebust, head of New Nordic Films.

A time of division indeed.
The last two editions of Cannes, the critics IndieWire polled were in lockstep with the jury’s picks, at least for Best Film. In 2019, they chose “Parasite” and “Titane,” both winners of the Palme d’Or. In 2022, the critics are shaking things up.
This year’s Palme d’Or winner, “Triangle of Sadness,” tied with “Eo” for fourth place in our Best Film rankings. Consensus was not the order of the day this time around. And more critics voted in our survey than ever before: 75 in total, representing five continents and a couple of dozen countries.
The critics chose Lukas Dhont’s “Close” as the best film of the festival. The tender drama about two 13-year-old best friends sneered at by their classmates for being too “close” was described by some as “heartbreaking.” The emotional film did tie for the Grand Prix, but many thought...

“Congratulations… it’s a murder.” A backwards thing to celebrate? Not when you’re a droll insomniac detective who’s only happy (read: not miserable) when you’re investigating a killing, the likes of which have been absent lately. And especially not when that killing means an encounter with the lowkey crush exponentially consuming your thoughts. Alas, Park Chan-wook––eloquently maximalist writer-director behind Oldboy and The Handmaiden––is no stranger to bizarre characterization.
Police detective Hae-joon (Park Hae-il) has been married for a while, but as his tedious wife points out at the beginning, “55 of sexless marriages end in divorce.” If divorce isn’t necessarily on Hae-joon’s mind, that’s probably because he’s lazy—an ironic trait for someone whose job is a high-stakes game of paying attention to detail.
The latest assignment is a murder in Busan: a man pushed off a cliff right after he scaled a mountain,...

While Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden dealt with a lot of sex and kink in its story of a handmaiden who gets into the good graces of her Japanese heiress, only to defraud her, the Korean filmmaker in his latest Decision to Leave, dotes on a detective Hae-Joon (Park Hae-il) who is head over heels with a very possible murder suspect, Seo-rae (Tang Wei).
Ya see, it looks like she threw her husband off a mountain.
And love being the motif between the two pics, Chan-wook was called to the carpet by the global press today at the Cannes Film Festival to field, “What is love for you?”
The refreshing query came in the wake of an immediate press conference for Crimes of the Future in which David Cronenberg slammed U.S. conservative tendencies, in particular Roe vs. Wade.
“My life isn’t part of my work,” answered the director,...
