Joel Kim Booster is sharing why his focus is not on becoming a trailblazer.
The comedian-actor has established his name in the entertainment industry in recent years, notably with his 2022 Netflix stand-up special Psychosexual, Hulu’s gay romantic comedy Fire Island, which he wrote and starred in, and his role in the TV series Loot.
“It’s difficult because I am not somebody who went into this wanting to be an advocate or a trailblazer or anything — I just wanted to make people laugh,” he recently explained to People magazine. “All the rest of it is a byproduct. You cannot prioritize it. You cannot be mission first, joke second and be successful.”
Booster said it actually makes him “really uncomfortable” when people call him a “trailblazer” as he feels the term should be used for comedians who helped pave the way for others. And particularly those who came before him...

There are a plenty of longtime Saturday Night cast members, yet there were no big exits — or hints of departures — on tonight’s Season 49 finale of the venerable NBC late-night program.
No SNL veterans were tearing up at the end of their sketches like Kate McKinnon did in the 2022 finale, it was all smiles and fist bumps at the curtain call, and, after another brutal joke swap, Colin Jost and Michael Che wrapped their 10th season together on Weekend Update by wishing everyone a great summer.
This was to be expected, given that no one from this year’s 17-strong troupe would willingly miss next year’s big celebrations – The Big 50.
Host Jake Gyllenhaal set the stage for what is to come in his opening monologue, noting that the finale was “the last episode before the big anniversary season.”

Bowen Yang realized that he couldn’t defy gravity — or sleep deprivation — when filming “Wicked.”
The “SNL” star told Vanity Fair that he found it “mentally fraying” to fly back and forth between the “Wicked” production in London and his weekly sketch series in New York City. Even “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels seemingly warned Yang against spreading himself too thin.
“This is when Lorne Michaels comes in,” Yang said. “Whatever you think about the situation, however you think it’s unique to you, however you think you might be the exception to the rule, Lorne is here to be like, ‘Actually, it might not be so good on the body for you to fly back and forth between New York and London to go shoot a movie.'”
Yang admitted that he was referencing “Wicked” as the most recent example of balancing both his TV and film obligations.

“Spa Night” and “Fire Island” filmmaker Andrew Ahn is set to direct Lily Gladstone and Bowen Yang in a new take on “The Wedding Banquet” that has been described as a “reimagination” of Ang Lee’s beloved 1993 film.
The new project, which was announced on Thursday by co-producers Bleecker Street and Shivhans Pictures and begins filming in May, is based on a new script by Ahn and frequent Lee collaborator James Schamus, who co-wrote the original film.
Lee’s “The Wedding Banquet” won the Golden Bear at the 1993 Berlin International Film Festival and helped cement his status as a notable figure in the global film community. The film stars Winston Chao as a gay Taiwanese man living in America who agrees to a marriage of convenience with a female friend, only to find his life complicated when his overbearing parents travel to America to plan his wedding banquet. Before you make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best TV Movie, take a look through our photo gallery featuring the telefilms most likely to land in this year’s lineup. As it stands, Peacock’s “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” (a continuation of the eight-time Emmy-winning 2000s comedy series “Monk”) is comfortably leading the race.
“Mr. Monk’s Last Case” would be the first Peacock movie ever nominated in this category, as would “Genie” or “Shooting Stars.”
Last year, Hulu’s “Fire Island” and “Prey” were both passed over in favor of The Roku Channel’s “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story,” but the streamer could soon avenge those losses with “No One Will Save You,” “Quiz Lady,” or “Self Reliance.”
Netflix – which won this award for three “Black Mirror” installments (2017-2019) as well as “Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square” (2021) – can now achieve its fifth victory with “Scoop” or “Unfrosted.”

“Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie” and “The Holdovers” were among the film winners at the 39th annual Casting Society Artios Awards.
The ceremony honors top casting in the year’s films, TV and theater. The celebrations were in person for the first time in three years, taking place in Los Angeles and New York City with hosts Niecy Nash-Betts and comedian Alex Edelman dividing up emcee duties between the cities. There was also a ceremony for casting directors in London.
With the newly added Academy Award for casting, the night certainly was a celebration. Starting in 2026, there will be a prize for best achievement in casting, the culmination of a campaign for recognition that has taken decades.

Joel Kim Booster is sharing his thoughts on the future of artificial intelligence as a creator in Hollywood.
Ahead of the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards Sunday afternoon, the writer-actor-comedian spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the controversial technology that had sparked fears across the entertainment industry (and beyond) about AI displacing people from their jobs.
“I think if anyone’s job should be replaced by AI, it should be the execs, you know, in terms of the skill sets,” the Fire Island star explained. “I think it aligns a little bit more with what AI is able to do in terms of just sort of distilling algorithms and what can be bought and sold and things like that.”
Booster, who has worked in all facets of the industry, including writing, producing and acting, said that he is “absolutely” scared about what’s to come with AI.

It was recently announced that Joel Kim Booster was teaming up with Searchlight Pictures again following the awards-nominated success of his 2022 queer rom-com “Fire Island.”
This time around, Booster’s new script is about the gay best friend (Booster) of a bride-to-be who’s in charge of making sure his bestie’s wedding goes off perfectly.
However, Booster says he’d like to start moving away from playing the “gay best friend.”
“I know how the industry works,” Booster tells me on this week’s episode of the “Just for Variety” podcast. “I know that there are a couple more gay best friends in my future. I will play them gladly. But my threshold for the level of project that I will be willing to play a gay best friend in shifted greatly in the last couple of years. Exclusive: After seeing Searchlight Pictures release his acclaimed queer rom-com Fire Island via Hulu, Joel Kim Booster is back in business with the studio as the writer and producer of Again Again Again, a spec that it snapped up for development ahead of last year’s WGA strike.
Eyed as a potential starring vehicle for Booster, the film centers on Gus, who as the man of honor for his closest friend Maggie’s extravagant wedding weekend at a Napa winery, is tasked with making sure the whole event goes off without a hitch. But when Gus’s wildly charismatic but emotionally unstable boyfriend Hal shows up unexpectedly, chaos ensues and threatens to derail the wedding as well as their relationship.
Aboard to produce the pic alongside Booster are Local Time’s Lulu Wang and Daniele Tate Melia, the duo behind the hugely acclaimed family dramedy The Farewell, written and directed for A24 by Wang.

“Loot” star Joel Kim Booster teased a “better” and more humor-heavy second season of the AppleTV+ comedy in which he portrays Nicholas alongside Maya Rudolph’s Molly Novak, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez’s Sofia and Ron Funches’ Howard.
The producer, writer and comedian attended the 75th Emmys with two nominations for “Fire Island”: Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
“It’s a much more joke-dense season because we know our voices and the kinds of jokes we can make, and so it’s much faster and funnier. You saw the relationships in Season 1, me and Howard, Molly and Sofia, and we sort of switch it up a little bit. I ruled out half the nominees immediately, but this is still the strongest single category in the history of the Emmys and I agonized over the other four. I had zero interest in The Crown — I watched the first season because my wife asked me to, then I was done. You couldn’t pay me to watch House of the Dragon — I was a Game of Thrones person, but I watched 10 minutes of this and read the reviews and it just seemed like a money grab. I devoured the first season of Yellowjackets, but it jumped the shark in season two. I love Bob Odenkirk and Jonathan Banks, but there have been better seasons of Better Call Saul. I loved The White Lotus — not as much as its first season, but still, Mike White is the best argument for why writers should be allowed to have a writers room of one.

As speculation continues over who will be the next James Bond, Andrew Scott, who played the villainous C in Sam Mendes’ “Spectre,” is weighing on his “All of Us Strangers” co-star Paul Mescal stepping into the shoes of 007.
“He’d probably be a great James Bond,” Scott told me Saturday night at Los Angeles special screening of “All of Us Strangers” at Vidiots in Eagle Rock.
But then he added with a sly smile, “I want to see him in ‘Gladiator’ first.”
Mescal, who couldn’t attend the Saturday screening because he is currently filming the “Gladiator” sequel in Malta, has been a fan favorite to lead the James Bond franchise after the departure of Daniel Craig.
Scott says Mescal has sent him photos from the “Gladiator” set. “It’s gonna be incredible,” Scott said. “It’s so exciting. I’ve seen some images that are going to delight the world over.

Hulu may have started out as the redheaded stepchild of the streamers back in Netflix’s heyday, but it has stuck around long enough to have firmly established itself as one of the old standbys. It follows, then, that Hulu would have a veritable fount of LGBTQ content ready to compete with the robust queer catalogues available to subscribers of Netflix, HBO, and other platforms.
A brief perusal of Hulu’s LGBTQ section doesn’t disappoint, but digging in deeper will give you the best chance at a genuinely memorable watch. Right now, the Disney-backed streamer is hosting popular queer television classics, like “The L Word,” “My So-Called Life,” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” alongside fresher fare, including “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay” and “Killing Eve.” Recent Hulu originals, such as “Love, Victor” and “Shrill,” deserve singling out, if only because you know they’re buzz-worthy and readily available on the service.

In “Everything You Want,” the second single from Matt Rogers’ new album Have You Heard of Christmas?, he croons about sending holiday tidings to a former flame — who, as it turns out, he can’t quite remember. “Gifted you my heart and swore a lifetime of my love, you’ve gone away now,” he sings. “Go get everything you want even if you can’t give that from me…all the stuff you like, which I forgot.”
The song, which is also a collaboration with Katie Gavin of Muna, was one of the last he added to the tracklist. The collection began as new recordings of songs the actor and writer has been performing as part of his musical comedy tour of the same name, but Rogers felt it was missing something a little more emo. “I needed a song that went full Pisces,” he says with a laugh. “My...

The Casting Society of America has announced the television, theater, commercials, short film and short form series nominees for the 39th Artios Awards. The gala will take place on March 7, 2024, where the winners will be announced.
“Each year, the Artios Awards celebrates the work of the casting community to represent a diverse range of fascinating stories authentically, and this collection of nominees underscores that commitment. We look forward to gathering our community together to celebrate these achievements at our 39th Annual event next year,” CSA President Destiny Lilly said in a statement.
Netflix leads the television categories with eight nominations, down from 11 in 2022, when it tied with HBO/Max, which this year received five nominations — the same number as Apple TV+ and Prime Video. Netflix nominations included “Beef,” “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” and “The Diplomat.”

Comedian Matt Rogers was stoned, wandering the streets of New York City, reeling from a bad breakup, and trying desperately to unlock the lyrics of a song steeped in this heartbreak — that also had to fit on his Christmas album. He had the start of a hook (“Go get everything you want…”) and a core idea, hoping his ex will get everything he wants in life, even if Rogers won’t be the one to provide it. But that was it.

This LGBTQ+ History Month, we're asking writers to reflect on a moment in queer pop culture history that has allowed them to experience queer liberation in their own lives. Check out our coverage here.
Long before the commercial success of "Crazy Rich Asians," "Shang-Chi," "Fire Island," and "Everything Everywhere All at Once" heralded a new age of Asian representation in Hollywood, Alice Wu's "Saving Face" paved the way for queer Asian visibility in 2004.
Last year, when I watched the film for the first time, I had a vague inkling that I aspired to become a screenwriter and filmmaker. I had taken a few screenwriting classes through a nonprofit arts organization, but I felt deep insecurity that the subjects I was writing about - my American-born Chinese experience of being queer in an ethno-burb in Los Angeles - were too specific and too esoteric to be relevant to any audience.

TV movies (now that mostly means streaming titles) have returned to favor amongst Emmy voters after a nadir of interest last season. All of the nominees for Outstanding Television Movie have received nominations outside that category - a stark difference from last season. This year, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (8 noms) and Prey (6) lead the pack, with Hocus Pocus 2 (3) and Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas and Fire Island (2 each) trailing behind. Even Boston Strangler got a single nom despite being absent in the Television Movie category. Frankly, this should have been the case for the past few years - especially beginning with the pandemic year/s - since this category has registered a steady uptick of eligible films.
