While everyone is talking about the next live-action Lord of the Rings film, the Hunt for Gollum, which will include Peter Jackson making a comeback to the franchise, WB Animation has been quietly working on its previously announced Lord of the Rings animated picture.

Netflix and Sony’s anime specialty platform Crunchyroll will both stream the upcoming Japanese anime series Dan Da Dan, an adaptation of the manga of the same name created by Yukinobu Tatsu. Netflix will stream the series globally, while Crunchyroll will simulcast it everywhere except in Asia as the episodes air in Japan. Taiwan-based anime distributor Muse also revealed during Hong Kong Filmart Tuesday that it has picked up Asia rights to the anticipated title.

The Motion Picture Sound Editors has revealed the nominations for its 71st annual Golden Reel Awards in categories spanning feature film, television, animation, computer entertainment and student productions. “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” are among the nominees.

Max’s We’re Here and the ABC special Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration each nabbed a pair of juried wins, which will be presented during the dual Creative Arts Emmy Awards on January 6 and 7 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. An edited presentation will air Saturday, January 13, on Fxx.

HBO and Max’s “We’re Here” and ABC’s “Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration” are among the first winners to pick up trophies at this year’s Emmy Awards. The Television Academy has announced early winners to this year’s 75th annual Emmy Awards via juried categories in animation, costume, hairstyling, makeup and motion design.
Juried awards will be presented at the 75th Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Jan. 6 and Jan. 7, at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live. An edited telecast will air Saturday, Jan. 13, at 8 p.m. Et on Fxx.
Juried category entrants are screened by a panel of professionals in the appropriate peer groups with the possibility of one, more than one or no entry awarded an Emmy.
In the innovation in emerging media programming category, the panel determined that no Emmys would be awarded.

Anime has catapulted in popularity the past couple of decades, with movies big and small all adding Easter eggs and references to the biggest animated shows out of Japan. Damien de Froberville has been hired as EVP of production and operating strategy at Sony Pictures Animation, TheWrap has learned. He comes from his post as CEO and producer at Sergio Pablos Studio in Spain.
The industry vet’s new role was announced by Sony Pictures Animation president Kristine Belson in an email to staff Monday. The move is, in part, meant to fill the role that Pam Marsden, head of production, will leave when she retires in the new year.
Additionally, SVP of physical production Erik Vignau, who has been leading new series production, will continue to do so but will also be leading “feature productions day-to-day” (according to the email).
“Those two production leads, in addition to artist management and operations, finance, technology and post-production will all report to Damien,” Belson wrote.

De Froberville comes from the Spain-based shop Sergio Pablos Animation and will largely assume a portfolio held by long-serving Spa executive Pam Marsden. Marsden will retire in 2024 after nearly two decades with the studio.

One of the most significant strands at Rome’s Mia market is its Co-Production Market and Pitching Forum, which has fast become one of the leading co-production forums in the industry calendar.
This year more than 500 projects were submitted for the industry section for animation, documentary, drama and film from 80 countries. This was a 30% uptick of countries compared to 2022 and of these, 62 were selected from 36 countries.
“We build everything around content,” says Mia director Gaia Tridente. “We have built a program that really fits the needs of the industry and the co-production market is the perfect place for people to come and discover good partners for international co-productions.”

Aardman Animations is one of the most celebrated animation studios in the world and certainly the most celebrated stop-motion studio this side of Laika. Aardman's work has a unique and signature look and feel, which for many outside of Britain has become synonymous with British humor, particularly when it comes to the quaint, low-key vibe, and cartoonish tone of the "Shaun The Sheep" and "Wallace & Gromit" shorts and movies.

Lucasfilm Animation, like so many fledgling studios, took a moment to find its footing. Founded in 2003, the company released its first feature film, "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," in 2008 to much scorn. Critics were quick to recognize the film was little more than three TV episodes hastily strung together, and its janky computer animation stood out like a sore thumb compared to the far more expressive and fluid visuals in films like "Kung Fun Panda" and "Wall-e" from that same year. "Clone Wars" also saw the debut of Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker's young, rambunctious Padawan, and a character who was immediately the target of much-undeserved derision (and more than a little sexism).

"This musical resistance needs us, Ernest!" The adorable bear and mouse are back once again! GKids has re-released the official trailer for the animated adventure sequel called Ernest and Celestine: A Trip to Gibberitia (this is for the original French-language version). The follow up to the Oscar-nominated Ernest & Celestine (2012) once again features the famous unlikely duo – this time returning to Ernest's hometown in Gibberitia. Nominated for Best Animated Film at France's 48th César Awards, Ernest and Celestine: A Trip to Gibberitia opened in French theaters in December, and had its US premiere as the opening night film of the New York Children's Film Festival. Jean-Christophe Roger, director of the Ernest & Celestine animated series, returned to the beloved characters as co-director, and is joined by Emmy-nominated co-director Julien Chheng, who worked on the original Ernest & Celestine feature as a character animator, and directed "The Spy Dancer" from the latest Star Wars: Visions series.

The animation community was taken aback at the July 12 announcement that there would be no Emmy awarded this season for Outstanding Short Form Animated Program. The category was shut out for the first time since its inception in 2008 (when it was called Outstanding Special Class Short-Format Animated Program). In case you missed it during your annual "Star Wars Day" machete viewing order party, season 2 of "Star Wars: Visions" was officially released on Disney+, and is back with an even more ambitious catalog of animated shorts from various studios. In November of 2017, just prior to the release of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," it was announced that director Rian Johnson, working with his creative collaborator Ram Bergman, would immediately begin work on three new "Star Wars" feature films, set entirely apart from the Skywalker-centric story already being explored. The actual story or content of this mysterious new trilogy was not revealed, although Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy expressed enthusiasm, saying that Johnson was "a creative force, and watching him craft 'The Last Jedi' from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career."

When Lucasfilm asked legendary Aardman (“Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget”) to participate in “Volume 2” of the “Star Wars: Visions” animated anthology (currently streaming on Disney+), the Bristol stop-motion studio came through with the amusing day at the races comedy “I Am Your Mother.” For director Magdalena Osinska (“Share the Orange” Alzheimer’s U.K. Research campaign), it was an opportunity to not only introduce Aardman wit and handmade prowess to the “Star Wars” universe but to emphasize girl power and maternal pride as well.
In the lively, 10-minute short, Anni (Charithra Chandran), a Twi’lek teen and promising pilot, refuses to enter the annual parent-child starship race because she’s embarrassed by her clinging mom, Kalina (Maxine Peake).
