A chaotic and bittersweet love affair meets a compelling journey toward radical self acceptance in Brazilian writer-director Felipe Sholl’s second feature, “Glória,” which screens as part of Ventana Sur’s Primer Corte strand on Wednesday in Buenos Aires.
Produced by Daniel van Hoogstraten at Brazil’s Syndrome Films, the plot follows bereft literature professor Gabriel as he moves to Río in an attempt to escape his close minded family after the death of his grandmother. There, he meets the enigmatic Monica (Diva Menner) who owns the neighborhood bar and becomes fast friends with regulars Mateus (Alan Ribeiro), Roger (Sandro Aliprandini) and Laila (Jade Sassará), who moonlight as sex workers. Quickly devoured by a tumultuous relationship with reclusive Uruguayan transplant Adriano, his sense of intimacy and care is distorted as he tries to contort into versions of himself that quickly prove futile.

Is a party really a party without a pooper? The question was rhetorical in Thursday’s Grey’s Anatomy as the residents’ blowout at Mer’s house included in the festivities — cue the sad trombone — Simone’s estranged fiancé, Trey. Did she admit to him that, at this point, he was yesterday’s news and Lucas, tomorrow’s? Read on, and we’ll discuss not only that turning point but how Blue and Jules spent their fateful evening at Grey Sloan and whether the talk was anything but small when Teddy and Owen had a double date with Bailey and Ben.

After seven weeks of uninterrupted chart dominance, Sza was knocked down a peg on the Billboard 200 albums chart for the tracking week that ended February 2. Her “Sos” fell to number-two while the number-one position was taken over by K-pop band Tomorrow X Together, whose five-song collection “The Name Chapter: Temptation” becomes their first ever chart-topper. Read more about this week’s chart at Billboard.com.
“Temptation” reached the top spot with 161,500 equivalent album units, which are calculated by combining traditional album sales, individual track sales, and online streaming performance. Traditional sales were the lion’s share of units for the collection, and most of those came from CD sales. This is the third time the group has been in the top 10. They reached number-four with “Minisode 2: Thursday’s Child” in 2022, and “The Chaos Chapter: Freeze” hit number-five in 2021. So they’d been steadily inching their way up the chart with each successive release.

The 65th Grammy Awards ceremony ended in mass confusion after the night’s biggest prize went to Harry Styles.
The British pop singer was announced as the winner of the Album of the Year award over BeyonceÌ, who was widely tipped as the favourite with her critically adored record Renaissance.
Styles himself addressed the surprise backstage after it was suggested by a reporter that BeyonceÌ should have beaten him to the prize.

Sam Smith and Kim Petras brought their viral song "Unholy" to the 2023 Grammys stage, proving exactly why the track has been such an inescapable hit with a fiery performance. Smith opened the segment surrounded by a circle of dancers bathed in red light, later wearing a set of devil horns, while Petras sang her verse from inside a cage as a line of fire blazed behind her.
The Feb. 5 performance was introduced by Madonna, who praised the duo for their subversiveness. "Here's what I've learned after four decades of music," she said. Sam Smith released their fourth studio album “Gloria” on Friday, January 27, a few months after they reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with “Unholy” featuring Kim Petras. Is the entire album just as big a hit as that song has been? Reviews have been coming in from music critics.
As of this writing the album has a MetaCritic score of 72 based on four reviews counted thus far: two positive and two somewhat mixed. On the positive end of the spectrum, Nick Levine (NME) calls “Gloria” “the most vital work of their career … mixing classy downbeat pop with moments of disco catharsis.” He adds that “Smith’s soulful voice is stunning throughout” and that the album is “rich musically, thematically and above all, emotionally.”

Sam Smith says their collab with Ed Sheeran was a long time in the works.
The artist’s new album Gloria is filled with star-studded names like Canadian Jessie Reyez and Kim Petras, but the track “Who We Love” with Sheeran took work to come together.
“It was beautiful. We’ve been friends for a long time and we’ve always wanted to work on a piece of music together. And this happened just so naturally,” said Smith on the team-up.

Rick Astley is suing rapper Yung Gravy for impersonating his voice.
In a lawsuit filed on Thursday (26 January) in a Los Angeles court, Astley, 56, claimed that Gravy’s track “Betty (Get Money)” violated his right to publicity by mimicking the distinctive voice he used in his 1987 song “Never Gonna Give You Up”.
“In an effort to capitalise off of the immense popularity and goodwill of Mr Astley, defendants … conspired to include a deliberate and nearly indistinguishable imitation of Mr Astley’s voice throughout the song,” Astley’s lawyers said, per Deadline.
“The public could not tell the difference. The imitation of Mr Astley’s voice was so successful the public believed it was actually Mr Astley singing.”
The lawyers also added that Astley is “extremely protective over his name, image, and likeness,” meaning the unauthorised use of the soundalike voice had caused him “immense damage”.

Akon has gone on a sexist rant in which he claims that women are not equal to men and need to understand “their roles”.
The singer also claimed that while women need a man to create life, men do not, and could have a child by putting their sperm in an “incubator”.
Akon made the comments while being interviewed on TheJoe Budden Podcast in December. He began by saying that he preferred African women to American women.
“The women [in Africa] treat you like a king,” he said. “They’re not competing with you, they’re not fighting for equality because they understand that men and women could never be equal.”
“They understand their roles. The roles there are very defined, it’s very clean.”
He continued: “Here [America], even if you say the word role to a woman here, they get offended.”
The 49-year-old was born in Senegal, but grew up in New Jersey in the States.

Sharon Stone has spoken out about the misogyny she has experienced on film sets from “big stars”.
The actor did however name Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci as two exceptions. Stone, De Niro and Pesci worked together on Martin Scorsese’s 1995 gangster epic Casino.
“I’ve worked with some of the biggest stars in the business, who will literally talk through my close-up, telling me what they think I should do,” Stone said, in an interview with Variety.
“They’re so misogynistic – now, that is not Robert De Niro. that is not Joe Pesci, that is not those guys,” she continued.
Stone began by praising George C Scott, with whom she acted in the 1999 Sidney Lumet crime drama Gloria.
According to Stone, the Dr Strangelove star put his hand on her face as he told her: “You’re the best listener I’ve ever worked with except for my wife.

“You like them crazy do you? I’m crazy through and through...” croons Sam Smith on their fourth album, Gloria. Smith seems too sweet to live up to the boast. You could safely take every song on this easygoing record home to meet the parents. Even on “I’m Not Here to Make Friends”, a track about searching for a lover in the darkness of a club, you can still imagine Smith at said club volunteering to be the designated driver for their mates.
This warmly conversational quality is nicely expressed on opener “Love Me More”, in which Smith asks listeners: “Have you ever felt like being somebody else?” They admit that the identity that “used to burn” now feels increasingly comfortable. Set to an affable, Nineties R&b beat, the song sees the mainstream pioneer of non-binary life holding out a companionable hand to anyone struggling to accept themselves.

Sam Smith was the musical guest during the first “Saturday Night Live” of 2023, and the British singer brought along some surprise guests.
During their first number, “Gloria”, Smith was accompanied by Sharon Stone, who reclined on a glittering chair while Smith sang, backed by a choir wearing dark hooded cloaks.

There was no shortage of guest appearances during the Aubrey Plaza–hosted Jan. 21 episode of "Saturday Night Live" - Amy Poehler, Allison Williams, Joe Biden, the Property Brothers, and Tony Hawk appeared over the course of the show - but the award for most surprising guest appearance of them all goes to Sharon Stone. Midway through the episode, Stone appeared lounging on a golden bed in front of Sam Smith and a choir as they performed the title song from Smith's new album, "Gloria." Near the end of the song, the actor sat up and dramatically stared into the camera.
At once strange and perfect, the moment may have left some "SNL" fans puzzled as to why Stone was chosen for this bit of performance art. But if you delve into her back catalog of films, it quickly becomes clear why Smith chose her. In 1999, the Golden Globe winner starred...

Updated with Sharon Stone’s reaction: Sam Smith debuted the title track of their upcoming album “Gloria” on Saturday Night Live. There was a special guest for the occasion, Sharon Stone.
The Oscar-nominated actor, the star of the Sidney Lumet-directed 1999 movie Gloria, a remake of John Cassavetes’ film of the same name, was part of the elaborate music production, which featured Smith surrounded by a large choir. In some sort of surreal performance art, Stone was lying on a bed for most of the song, then dramatically got up toward the end.
Smith released Gloria two days ago, ahead of their stint as musical guest on the NBC sketch program; the album, Smith’s fourth, is coming out January 27.
Stone has hosted SNL once, in 1992, shortly after the release of Basic Instinct, which catapulted her to global stardom. She was frequently impersonated on the show by Amy Poehler who,...

First time host Aubrey Plaza returned to her NBC Page roots giving a backstage tour of the show, with a surprise cameo from former “SNL” cast member and “Parks and Recreation” star Amy Poehler and President Joe Biden.
“Wow, it is great to be here hosting ‘Saturday Night Live.’ This is a dream come true and yes I mean that,” she said.
“People think I’m weird because of the characters that I play,” she said. “My real family is here including my Grandma Margie. They all came up here from Delaware. I was voted most famous person from Delaware, I beat Joe Biden.”
“That’s a fact and he was pissed, he was livid,” she said.
The President then appeared, saying, “Aubrey, you’re the most famous person out of Deleware and there’s no question about that. We’re just grateful you made it out of ‘White Lotus’ alive.

Sebastián Lelio's films have often dealt with the experiences of women on the edge or at a major crossroads in their lives. His characters are challenged by present difficulties and past traumas that appear directly in front of them all at once, and Lelio uses every tool possible to fill his movies with their subjective view of events. In his 2022 film "The Wonder," based on Emma Donoghue's book of the same name, that subjectivity becomes a core question: How can one know the experience of another?

"Saturday Night Live" is going to kick off the new year with some pretty incredible hosts. The long-running late-night sketch comedy series will feature Aubrey Plaza for its return episode after the holiday break, with Michael B. Jordan hosting the week after. Both are first-time "SNL" hosts, and both have fantastic dramatic and comedic chops, so it will be a blast seeing those skills put to the test by the series' sketches. The news was announced via the "Saturday Night Live" Twitter, with their traditional post-it notes listing the names of hosts, musical guests, and episode dates.
Plaza will host the first "SNL" episode of 2023 on January 21, with musical guest Sam Smith, while Jordan will host the following Saturday, January 28, with musical guest Lil Baby. The best way to draw big audiences to "SNL" is with great hosts, and both Plaza and Jordan are currently riding high in their careers.

While most fans were happy to see him enjoying his time off, some trolls found their way into the comments and criticized Smith’s physique.
Fans were quick to jump to his defense, calling out the trolls for judging someone for their happiness.
This is them accepting themselves and being happy with their body. Something you clearly lack the ability to do,” wrote one Twitter user.

Smith, who often sings about his struggles growing up as a gay man, performed his Grammy-winning track “Stay with Me” with a little twist.
“I felt inspired to change the lyrics of ‘Stay With Me’ from, ‘this ain’t love, it’s clear to see’ to ‘this is love, it’s clear to see’ to mark the historic occasion,” he continued.

FX’s “Kindred,” streaming on Hulu, is the long-awaited adaptation of what is arguably sci-fi trailblazer Octavia E. Butler’s most well-known novel. Released in 1979, “Kindred” is a literary mash-up that is part slave narrative, fantasy and historical fiction. What many regard as Butler’s magnum opus transports a modern Black woman back in time to a plantation where she experiences life as an enslaved woman. To bring this work to life, which has been in the Hollywood pipeline since at least the 1990s, FX tasked Obie Award-winning playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, noted for his plays “Appropriate” and “An Octoroon” as well as Pulitzer Prize finalists “Gloria” and “Everybody.” Jacobs-Jenkins also served as a producer on HBO’s critically acclaimed, multiple Emmy Award-winning limited series “Watchmen,” which propelled the horrific Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 into popular conversations.
Which is all to say, this adaptation of “Kindred” has some serious bona fides bringing it to life.

One of the greatest powers that films have is the ability to generate empathy. Even if we have a hard time understanding the issues that other people are dealing with, a great movie can open us up to someone else's experience. While some people go to the movies simply for escapism, films can be a tool for healing and learning.
Divorce is a topic that cinema has flirted with since the golden age of Hollywood, and classic films bravely took on these topics. Comedies like "His Girl Friday" and "The Awful Truth" dealt with non-traditional relationships, in which the couple has to consider the vows they want to make to each other. Although the 1970s saw many serious dramas about the legal proceedings of divorce, such as "Scenes From A Marriage" and "An Unmarried Woman," there have also been more humorous interpretations like "Something's Gotta Give" and "It's Complicated."
