With voting for the 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards set to end on January 7, “The Morning Show” star Billy Crudup hit the SAG Foundation on Wednesday night to participate in a conversation about the Apple TV+ drama’s third season and his role as Cory Ellison on the hit show.
Crudup is a five-time SAG Award nominee and a past winner as part of the “Spotlight” ensemble. His acclaimed and Emmy Award-winning performance on “The Morning Show” has earned him three overall SAG Award nominations, including two individual Best Actor nominations for the show.
“I love the work more than anything,” Crudup said during the event – his first appearance in support of the show since the end of the actors’ strike. “This has tested my limits in this medium as TV has a different rhythm. To have the opportunity to play someone like Cory is a gift.”

In 2023, two major industry strikes put movies on hold. In the upcoming year, it should be interesting to see if the releases reflect that major halt in work or if things will move forward as usual. Many blockbuster releases claim to be on track to come out on their original dates, but there is always time to push them back if needed. Let’s preview the movie 2024 release schedule and see if some of your most anticipated films will arrive on time.
January Night Swim – January 5th
Just the premise alone brings a lot of atmosphere to the idea. A nighttime use of a swimming pool always brings a certain air of creepiness to it. This is produced by horror king James Wan and Blumhouse. With their usual smaller budgets, it’s easy that this one will be a win even if the box office isn’t huge. Horror hit...

As my colleague Anthony D’Alessandro has noted, the domestic movie box office, starved of product by overlapping strikes, will likely be trimmed by a billion dollars in 2024.
So here’s question worth pondering: Would the film industry be healthier if most of that pruning occurred at the very top?
There’s a case to be made.
One of the more noticeable distortions to accompany the simultaneous arrival of Covid lockdowns and a streaming revolution in the last few years was the acceleration of a trend toward extreme top-loading at the box office.
In 2023, the three top-grossing films were Barbie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, with about $1.6 billion in ticket sales among them. Figuring the year’s box office take at roughly $9 billion, by Anthony’s early estimate, just three films accounted for 17.8 percent of the domestic theatrical total.

Happy New Year! The first month of the year begins next week, and January means a few things in the world of movies: First off, there’s the Sundance Film Festival, where new movies and talent will be discovered that the rest of the world will have a chance to see over the rest of the year. There are also the Oscar nominations on January 23 which will become the focus of movie lovers for the next few weeks. There’s also the notorious myth that studios save all of their bad movies for January, which isn’t necessarily true, but one probably shouldn’t expect too many mega-blockbusters in the coming month. Read on for Gold Derby’s January 2024 box office preview.

[This story contains spoilers for Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire.]
Rebel Moon co-writers Kurt Johnstad and Zack Snyder go way back. Years and years before they struck gold with 300 (2006), Johnstad met Snyder at a time when they were both cutting their teeth in the world of music videos, and in 1997, Snyder raised the idea of Rebel Moon in its embryonic form of Seven Samurai in space. And once they both broke into the film industry in the early 2000s, Johnstad and Snyder began to brainstorm potential characters and scenes.
Johnstad and Snyder’s partnership then led to the 300 franchise and various other unproduced scripts. In 2012, Snyder pitched the idea as a more grown-up version of Star Wars to Lucasfilm, but when Disney acquired the company, Snyder knew that his vision wouldn’t see the light of day. He then entertained the idea of a TV series with producer Eric Newman, but it wasn’t until Snyder’s dramatic...

There will be blood at the box office in 2024.
And not the type that comes with two studio tentpoles going at each other. Nah, as Barbenheimer showed this past year, that’s actually great for business.
We’re talking the red-ink kind, and it will be felt on both sides, studios and cinemas, with the latter sector experiencing a potential collapse come spring among midsized circuits due to the erratic pipeline of product.
While this year counted 124 wide theatrical releases, the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes forced a bulk of tentpole delays that are leaving 2024 with only 107 wide titles. Craters abound on the release schedule, with six weekends currently sans wide entries: January 26, March 15, May 31, October 11, December 6 and December 27. The domestic box office this year, after being +21% over 2022 with a near $9 billion, is expected to shed at least $1 billion in 2024 to $8 billion, -11%.

Chicago – The world was rocked on December 27th, 2023, when the report came through that South Korean (Sk) actor Lee Sun-kyun – who had a prominent role in the 2019 Oscar Best Picture “Parasite’ – had died from an apparent suicide in Seoul (Sk), months after his appearance during Closing Night at Chicago’s Asian Pop-Up Cinema (Apuc), where he represented his outrageous new comedy, “Killing Romance.” His apparent suicide was on the heels of government pressure due to his alleged drug consumption. Lee Sun-kyun was 48.
After beginning his career in musical theatre, Lee was relegated to minor and supporting roles onscreen as he began in TV and film. His breakthrough was in Sk TV’s “Coffee Prince” and the medical drama “Behind the White Tower,” both in 2007. He gained more popularity with “My Mister,” (2018) which is currently on Netflix.

Typically the momentum of Christmas moviegoing spills over into Dec. 26, but that wasn’t the case this year as Warner Bros’ Wonka led all titles with $8.9M — the second lowest take for a No. 1 movie after Christmas (since 2000) ahead of the studio’s own Wonder Woman 1984 which made $5.8M when a bulk of the nation’s cinemas were closed due to Covid. Yikes!
In the last two years post pandemic, the No. 1 movie on Dec. 26 cleared some $30M-plus in a single day –we’re talking Spider-Man: No Way Home and Avatar: The Way of Water. In its pre-Covid heyday, Dec. 26 delivered $56.7M to Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2019, a record amount of cash earned by a movie the day after Christmas.
Warner Bros./DC’s B CinemaScore Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom after leading the weekend with a 4-day of $38.3M, fell to the No. 2 spot with $8.3M (-21% from Christmas) yesterday at 3,706 theaters.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan Is The Hgoty 2023, Ends Bollywood’s Hiatus After 6 Years (Picture Credit: Instagram & Youtube)
Shah Rukh Khan has officially ended Bollywood’s long hiatus at the box office, and Jawan is officially the highest-grosser of the year in 2023, coming from Bollywood. However, we are still not sure if celebrating this achievement as a Bollywood achievement is correct since the film featured South Indian superstar Nayanthara and the blockbuster South Indian director Atlee!
However, one thing for sure is that the crown this year officially goes to SRKn for bringing people back to the theaters in such great numbers. While Jawan has turned the highest-grossing film of the year, it was speculated that Animal or Salaar could have broken Srk’s record, but that seems impossible now.

On Sandra Hüller’s wall is the first piece of art she ever owned: a photograph she bought from a shop in Munich. “I won’t say its name,” she says archly, “because that would be advertising.” It’s a dynamic, joyous image showing the ensemble cast of Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring as staged by Pina Bausch, the German choreographer famous for saying, “Dance, dance, otherwise we are lost.” “I just love it,” Hüller says admiringly, turning her head for another look. “These people are all making the same movement, as you can see. But everybody is doing it completely differently. They have the same task, but you can see each personality in the way they’re doing it. I love it so much. It’s like they’re almost flying.” It explains a lot about Hüller and her craft.

The entertainment industry is wrapping up one of the most chaotic and costly years in its history. From striking writers and actors to swooning stock prices, 2023 didn’t lack for drama.
But even as Hollywood looks to put all that in the rearview mirror and get back to business as usual, the landscape remains treacherous. Wall Street has big concerns about how media companies are handling the shift from cable to streaming. The box office hasn’t recaptured its pre-pandemic stride. Once the epitome of coolness, late-night TV is suffering from a full-blown identity crisis. Elected leaders are eager to crack down on the excesses of Ticketmaster and its ilk. All this upheaval is expected to lead to more consolidation in a space that’s seen century-old companies vanish or get absorbed into larger businesses, displacing thousands of workers and creating unprecedented disruption.

Here, we run down each Deadline International journalist’s top pick from the year, for the most part avoiding spoilers. Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for the Season 2 finale of “Julia,” now streaming on Max.
“Julia” might put a strong focus on the food, but it’s a show that also has a lot more on its mind. The Max comedy series takes on a wide range of 1960s-era social issues, including feminism, homosexuality, civil rights and the anti-war movement.
“Julia” wraps up its second season Thursday with an eventful finale that includes filming an ambitious crustacean segment — in the “Lobster a l’Americaine” episode. After cooking and hitting farmer’s markets in the south of France with her friend and co-author Simone Beck (Isabella Rossellini), the Childs — played by Sarah Lancashire and David Hyde Pierce — spend time in Paris, then return to Boston where they must confront — and foil — an FBI investigation into Wgbh’s “subversive” activities, with help from station employees like producer Alice (Brittany Bradford).

The Directors Guild of America on Thursday unveiled a new Feature Film Diversity & Inclusion report, which spotlights the limited progress that’s been made in the feature space over the last five years, when it comes to the hiring of women and people of color, in stark contrast to what’s transpired in TV.
Of the 1,026 DGA-covered features released theatrically from 2018-2022, just 16% were helmed by women, with 17% being helmed by directors of color. Directing jobs for women ranged across the five-year period from a low of 12% in 2018 to a high of 22% in 2020. Similarly, directors of color ranged from a low of 13% in 2019 to a high of 25% in 2021.
In comparing the data for 2018-2022 to that of the DGA’s last report for 2013-2017, it’s evident that women directors have seen only incremental growth in opportunity, up 8% from the previous five-year period. Directing jobs for people of color...

As T.E. Lawrence exclaims in "Lawrence of Arabia": "Big things have small beginnings." That axiom holds generally true of most things in life, of course, yet it curiously applies to a great number of films released in 2023.
Over the last decade and change, we've been privy to many "big things" in American cinema; such trends as the rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its brethren have ensured that world-ending stakes (or larger) became the order of the day on screen, and such stakes were allowed to rise given their films' not-so-humble beginnings (for example: Tony Stark in "Iron Man" begins as a billionaire playboy military weapons manufacturer).
While there has never been a complete end to a more modest style of storytelling focused on average, everyday characters, the prevalence of the superhero film and the need for Hollywood to get butts in seats as screens dwindle meant that...

Exclusive: Producers Ian Collie and Rob Gibson are best known for helping bring an injured mongrel dog into the global consciousness in Colin From Accounts. Ahead of a busy 2024, the pair sat down with Deadline to chat about plans for their Easy Tiger Productions imprint, the state of TV in Australia and signing with CAA.
And where else to start, but with Colin From Accounts, Australian streamer Binge’s romantic sitcom series written by and starring real-life couple Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer. Over the weekend, the critically acclaimed show, winner of the Most Outstanding Comedy Program at the Logies, went into production on Season 2 after a delay primarily caused by the U.S. writers strike.
Gibson was first alerted to what would become Colin just after leaving his post as Head of Originals at Binge rival Stan. “Harriet had given me the script as a writing sample for another show,...

In the summer between Paige Wassel‘s sophomore and junior years of college, she emailed Vogue cold and asked for an internship.
“I was studying PR at the time, and Vogue got back to me and they were like, ‘We’ve never had someone just email us for an internship,'” she says. “They brought me in for an interview, and I ended up landing it.”
She worked PR for Vogue, and then got a full-time job at a PR firm in Los Angeles after graduating. But it wasn’t too long before she realized “I just don’t want to do this anymore.” And she got lucky/unlucky: “I actually got laid off around that time where I was looking for new jobs.

100 Crore Club Box Office (Facts): Ranbir Kapoor’s Hat-Trick Makes Him The Only Actor With A Rare Record! (Picture Credit: Youtube)
Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal is eyeing the 1000 crore box office worldwide and has already crossed the 500 crore club in India. Currently, it is eyeing Jawan’s highest-grossing box office collection of the year 2023, which still seems an impossible number to match with a 640.42 crore collection in its lifetime.
However, the Animal box office is slowly and steadily still breaking records and setting new targets for the upcoming biggies. As the film is performing well overseas and making some new records daily, it has brought laurels to Ranbir Kapoor’s individual box office numbers as well.
As we checked the recent data, we figured out that Rk is the only Bollywood actor who has achieved a rare record with Animal’s Box Office. In fact, he achieved this record...

Deadpool 3, Beetlejuice 2 and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire top Fandango’s list of most-anticipated wide-release movies in 2024. (See the full top 10 and other charts below.)
The NBCUniversal-owned digital movie brand surveyed 8,000 ticket buyers about the titles they’re most looking forward to, and also gauged their mood heading into next year. About 81% of respondents say they are more excited about films in 2024 than they were heading into 2023, with 88% declaring their intention to go to multiple films.
The mindset of the moviegoer has been difficult to discern in recent years as Covid and the streaming boom upended decades of traditional business methods. Theatrical moviegoing has gradually reasserted its potential as a profit source, but studios still appear likely to release fewer films next year, in part due to the strikes. The Fandango charts also show that Hollywood has become ever more reliant on familiar IP. After the Deadpool, Beetlejuice and Ghostbusters franchise installments,...

Since its founding in 2011, Letterboxd has carved out a niche as a social platform for cinephiles. Now it wants to use that platform to get people off their computers and back to movie theaters.
The film discussion and review platform is adding showtimes for paid patron members in the U.S., U.K., Ireland, Australia, Canada and New Zealand, letting users see where the movies they are reading about are playing near them. The feature is available to patron members now, and will roll out to all members on Christmas Eve.
“Showtimes have long been on our radar as something we’d like to offer to our members—another way of making Letterboxd the one place they come when selecting what to watch next. We de-prioritized the feature somewhat over Covid, as seeing films in theaters was not top of mind!” says Letterboxd co-founder Matthew Buchanan. “Now that audiences are returning to cinemas,...

This Doctor Who article contains spoilers.
“When I was young, I was so sure of myself,” the Doctor tells Donna Noble early in the third and final Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Special. “I made a terrible mistake.” That bit of exposition catches up viewers who never got the chance to watch the lost First Doctor serial “The Celestial Toymaker,” in which Michael Gough played the Toymaker, the bad guy of “The Giggle,” now played by Neil Patrick Harris. However, it also captures the theme of the episode, in which the Toymaker’s control over reality and the weight of constant running finally catches up to the Doctor and forces him to admit how little he knows.
From the Covid-era satire of the world destroying itself in pursuit of individual truth to the weariness with which the Doctor tells Noble that he was “so certain” about his past actions, “The...

There are times when one’s world unexpectedly shifts off its axis, and everyone involved must scramble and find a new center of gravity. November 10, 2021 was such a day for Jon Batiste and his life partner, Suleika Jaouad. That morning, the acclaimed multi-instrumentalist and bandleader for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert learned he’d been nominated for a stunning 11 Grammy awards — including Album of the Year — for his sixth studio LP, We Are. It was also the morning that Jaouad, a New York Times bestselling author for her memoir, Between Two Kingdoms, began chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow that had re-emerged after more than a decade in remission.

As the arthouse cinema market continues to regain its footing, the list of what may be considered an overlooked film could be quite vast, depending on one’s metrics. For our yearly feature highlighting the 50 best films you might have missed––arriving before our overall top 50 films––we’ve sought to dig deep to find the gems that deserved more attention upon their initial release and have mostly been left out of year-end conversations. Hopefully, with many widely available on a variety of streaming platforms, they will begin to find an expanded audience.
While many documentaries would qualify for this list, we stuck strictly to narrative efforts; one can instead read our rundown of the top docs here. Check out the list below, as presented in alphabetical order.

George Clooney officially has eight directorial features under his belt, with the ninth, The Boys in the Boat, rowing towards a December 25th release. And it was with that movie that Clooney faced perhaps his most unique challenge yet: directing remotely.
It was during filming on The Boys in the Boat — which began in March 2022 (the project has been in development for quite some time) — that George Clooney caught Covid for the first time. But production couldn’t just stop and so he had to direct from an iPad. Speaking with People, Clooney remembered one scene with Callum Turner, who plays Olympian rower Joe Rantz. “I’m on an iPad hacking away from my bedroom…[co-producer Grant [Heslov] was sitting on the camera and they’d hold up the iPad to Cal and I’d go, ‘Ah, go fast.’ I’d rasp out ‘Faster’ whatever that was.” While this didn’t result in the best direction,...

Japanese cinema has achieved great heights through all eras of the medium. This weekend, two of the country’s giants — 82-year-old Hayao Miyazaki and 69-year-old Godzilla — came out of local retirement with sleeper hits.
GKids opened Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron” to #1 and Toho Releasing saw “Godzilla Minus One” take #3 in its second week. Both distributors smartly chose playtimes when top studios avoided releasing new films and when those in play provided less competition.
The weekend also saw the impressive debuts of three specialized titles. Led by Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” (Searchlight) with the fall’s top platform showing, Ava DuVernay’s “Origin” (Neon) began its one-week qualifying run along with Wim Wenders’ documentary “Anselm.”

After Broadway shut down due to the pandemic, “Waitress” received an arts grant from Chuck Schumer’s office that allowed the production to reopen in 2021. Sara Bareilles, who wrote the music and lyrics, said this opportunity inspired her and the team to make the most of their time back on stage by shooting a live recording.
Bleecker Street and Fathom Events will release “Waitress: The Musical” in theaters for a five-day series of nationwide special-event screenings, starting Dec. 7. Bareilles, who also plays the lead role of Jenna Hunterson in the film production, said shooting this live-capture helped bring the audience “closer to the emotionality of the performances.”

Look, we all made mistakes during Covid. Disney was no exception, banishing “Soul,” “Luca,” and “Turning Red” to streaming as Disney+ exclusives. It will now spend the first quarter of 2024 making it up to Pixar with what Disney called “special engagement” theatrical runs for each.
“Soul” was the first and truest Covid casualty of the bunch, and it will be the first to (finally) arrive in theaters on January 12. “Turning Red” is set for a February 9 release; “Luca” will arrive on March 22. All three movies will be screened along with Pixar shorts, just like in the good ‘ol days.
Despite the “special engagement” designation, end dates have not been booked in advance, a source with knowledge of the plan told IndieWire. If a film performs at the box office, by all means, run free. Speaking of free, the movies are also expected to remain on Disney+ while they play in theaters.

It has been stated time and time again that a well-executed genre movie may be able to present a provocative, yet necessary view on recent developments within our world. While it is perhaps the most obvious choice to use the elements of drama, especially with a family at its center, to tell a story dealing with these themes, the same can be said for horror and science-fiction. Some of the most relevant and also timeless stories have utilized aspects of horror and dreams to create a vision which still resonates with audiences today. Director Yoon Eun-kyung (“Hotel Lake”) seems to share this view considering her latest feature “The Tenants” blends elements of both genres, resulting in a Kafkaesque tale about the human condition, especially the value of the individual within a system seeking to control and observe everything.

Expectations for ‘The Marvels’ weren’t high in terms of box office numbers like they are for some other MCU projects. However, no one probably thought things would be this bad.
First, the opening weekend was somewhat weak. Then, the first week was even weaker. And now, as ‘The Marvels’ ends its box office run, it officially became MCU’s lowest-grossing movie of all time.
The movie ran in theaters for a full month and tallied $80 million in domestic box office returns and just under $197 million worldwide. It is not even enough to cover the approximate $220 million net budget, which is not something the MCU is accustomed to.

Three very different movies, original, with arthouse cred and in theaters for weeks, are drawing audiences showing welcome depth and breadth in the specialty market as awards season kicks off. Nicolas Cage’s nerdy character sees his life collapse when he randomly starts appearing in people’s dreams as Dream Scenario has a solid expansion, Saltburn is attracting young crowds on the coasts, The Holdovers drawing elusive older demos to theaters.
Meanwhile, Bollywood’s Animal showcases the ongoing strength of Indian films Stateside. The revenge thriller starring Ranbir Kapoor racked up an estimated $6.14 million on about 700 screens over the three days, the second biggest opening weekend of all time for a Bollywood film in North America behind Pathaan, taking the no. 7 slot at the North. Disney CEO Bob Iger blames the pandemic effect as part of the reason for the dismal box office results on The Marvels.
Speaking at a New York Times business summit earlier this week, Iger said the studio needs some revitalization.
″The Marvels was shot during Covid,” he explained. “There wasn’t as much supervision on the set, so to speak, where we have executives [that are] really looking over what’s being done day after day after day.”
He listed a number of reasons why the studio’s recent string of films is lagging, among them streaming and messaging.
“The experience of accessing [the films] and watching them in the home is better than it ever was,” he said. “And [it’s] a bargain when you think about it. Streaming Disney+ you can get for $7 a month. That’s a lot cheaper than taking your whole family to a film. So, I think the bar is...

The path to getting a movie from script to screen can be a long one even for short films. That was certainly the case for the latest Disney+ short “The Shepherd,” which stars Ben Radcliffe and John Travolta as two fighter pilots in the 1950s. The story, adapted from Frederick Forsyth’s novella, follows Radcliffe as a young pilot who, on Christmas Eve, flies home to England. However, mid-way through the flight, his plane malfunctions and the electrics fail, leaving Radcliffe lost and stranded. What happens next makes for a heartwarming Christmas tale akin to “A Christmas Carol” and the like. I attended a special Q&a screening in London with director Iain Softley and John Travolta with critic Mark Kermode moderating.
“I don’t have many projects I’ve ever invested my heart and soul into and this is one of the only ones,” explained Travolta. The actor seemed...

Disney today announced a cash dividend of $0.30 per share for the second half of its fiscal 2023, its first such payout since the dividend was halted three years ago during Covid.
It will be payable January 10, 2024 to shareholders of record at the close of business on December 11. The company had said back in February that it planned to bring back the dividend this year.
“This has been a year of important progress for The Walt Disney Company, defined by a strategic restructuring and a renewed focus on long-term growth,” said Mark Parker, Chairman of the Board. “As Disney moves forward with its key strategic objectives, we are pleased to declare a dividend for our shareholders while we continue to invest in the company’s future and prioritize meaningful value creation.”

Disney’s much vaunted centennial jubilee has taken on a sour note, at least at the multiplex. Trumpeted in the press as a celebration for a hundred years of classics, 2023 was likely intended to be a victory lap in the vein of 2019, when the once and future Disney CEO Bob Iger saw his “final year” coincide with a fire sale at the cinemas. Eight of the 10 highest grossing movies that year were either Disney releases or productions Disney had a profit share in, and each grossed more than $1 billion. Avengers: Endgame nearly touched $3 billion. The lone “original” film among the lot, with it being neither a sequel or remake, was Captain Marvel.

Three years ago, on her 22nd birthday, Naomi Hearts made a decision.
“I’m like, ‘I know that I can do it,'” she says. “‘I want to follow my dreams.'”
Her dream was to be a content creator–and when she told her mom about it, she wasn’t exactly sure what the response would be. Turns out, it was a pretty good one: Her mom bought her a streaming camera, and Hearts jumped on Twitch.
“I was doing fine. I was having fun with it,” she says. “ut then my friend was like, ‘You should really do TikTok.'”
Hearts said nah. She, like many people, figured TikTok was an app for kids, where dancing reigned supreme. She didn...

Disney CEO Bob Iger said at the New York Times’ DealBook Summit (via CNBC) following “The Marvels” flopping at the box office that there was a lack of supervision on the set of the film as a result of the Covid pandemic. The combination of pandemic set restrictions and Disney’s increased output due to the launch of streamer Disney+ made it increasingly difficult for studio executives to oversee the onslaught of new productions.
Since opening in theaters in November, the Brie Larson-led Marvel sequel has only grossed $77 million at the domestic box office and $187 million worldwide. It’s the biggest flop yet in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is shaping up to be the first MCU title not to cross the $100 million mark domestically.
