It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.
On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

In a recent interview with BBC Radio 4 Today, acting legend Sir Michael Caine discussed his upcoming film, "The Great Escaper," along with some shocking (or not) news: it will also be his last film.
As Caine tells it, he already considered himself retired when he received the script and turned it down three times. Reading it eventually won him over. Caine fell so "in love" with the script that he decided it would be a good high note to end his 70+ year career on. Caine said:
"I kept saying I'm gonna retire. Well, I am now because I figured, I've had a picture where I've played the lead, and it's got incredible reviews. The only parts I'm likely to get now are old men, 90-year-old men — well, maybe 85, you know? And I thought, 'Well, I might as well leave with all this. I've got wonderful reviews. What am I gonna do to beat this?...

The Pursuit of Love just wouldn’t leave Emily Mortimer alone. Much like its protagonist, the doggedly romantic yet free-spirited Linda Radlett, the novel followed Mortimer across time and space, waiting half a lifetime after their first meeting to present itself again, extend a hand, and ask her to go on a rousing adventure. Mortimer initially encountered the book as a teenager, “as a lot of girls in England do,” she says, projecting just above the Sunday-morning din of an espresso maker and chatter at a restaurant near her Brooklyn brownstone.

“You’re were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off” is and will always be Michael Caine’s most iconic line of all time, uttered in the 1969 British Caper The Italian Job. With a career spanning a hefty 64 years between 1953 and 2017, Caine hits our screens yet again this week starring opposite Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin in Going in Style, a remake of the 1979 heist comedy directed by Zach Braff. You watch enough hero-backed-into-a-corner action films like Crank, Taken, or The Equalizer and you start to find your mind drifting away from the sheer monotony of their progression. Their characters are built to survive these situations no matter how dire because people want to see the good guy win. They want to see him risk everything, travel in the murky areas of morality, and be the badass society doesn’t allow them to be, but that ultimate victory is key because escapism only works when your surrogate onscreen walks away. How else could there be a sequel? But what happens when a Joe Schmo is thrust into proving his mettle through the same type of scenario? What would those films look like through a Shaun of the Dead filter?
The answer arrives in the form of Adam Randall‘s Level Up, a high-concept thriller wherein slacker Matt (Josh Bowman) is...

This beautifully photographed film is a slow burner about two sisters who come into traumatic conflict with two renegade Union soldiers
Daniel Barber is the British film-maker who directed the urban thriller Harry Brown in 2009, with Michael Caine as a pensioner who takes on local thugs. His latest film (from 2014, getting a belated UK release) is a siege drama set towards the bitter end of the American civil war, written for the screen by the smart first-timer Julia Hart. Brit Marling and Hailee Steinfeld play two sisters in the south, Augusta and Louise, whose menfolk have all been killed; they live with their slave, Mad – a very good performance from Muna Otaru. These women are to come into traumatic conflict with two renegade Union soldiers, Moses (Sam Worthington) and Henry (Kyle Soller), crazed and bored with the horror of war. This is an intriguing slow burner of a film, whose pace sometimes decelerates to an almost Bergmanesque adagio: it’s beautifully photographed by the German cinematographer Martin Ruhe. However, I felt it didn’t come fully to dramatic life, and nothing in it quite lived up to its fascinating and shocking opening. Its two most charismatic performers, Otaru and Steinfeld, are the ones with the least to do. A serious and absorbing piece of work, nonetheless.

Call this a revisionist feminist postapocalyptic historical western home-invasion horror drama. But even that doesn’t quite do it justice. I’m “biast” (pro): desperate for stories about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
You haven’t seen a movie like this before. Even a wild label like “revisionist feminist postapocalyptic historical western home-invasion horror drama” doesn’t quite do it justice. The Keeping Room is a thrilling experience in how it defies categorization even as it pulls in bits and pieces from various genres in a way that shakes them all up, and in how it finds a fresh perspective on a scenario that is familiar in many of its aspects via the simple yet radical approach of telling its tale through the eyes of women.
This isn’t quite a western: we are not on the untamed frontier but,...

Five years after the Michael Caine vehicle Harry Brown hit theaters, director Daniel Barber has returned to the director’s seat with a revisitation to period drama, which he first explored with his Oscar nominated short The Tonto Woman. With The Keeping Room, he, along with Brit Marling, Sam Worthington, Hailee Steinfeld and newcomer Muna Otaru, relive the end of the American Civil War still firmly wrapped in the fraying husks of racism and sexism, yet his tale, penned by first time screenwriter Julia Hart, sees these barriers burned to the ground in a fit of valiantly feminine retaliation.
Bolstered by a set of strong female performances, Barber’s essentially feminist film premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival. I had the opportunity to sit down with the director to discuss how he came to the project, if he had any apprehensions about tackling American racism as a British filmmaker,...

There have been many movies made about the Civil War, but very few, if any, have been told from a female’s perspective. Now, however, we have The Keeping Room, which attempts to look at history from that point of view and shatter any preconceptions anyone has about gender.
Directed by Daniel Barber, who got Michael Caine to turn vigilante in Harry Brown, and based on the 2012 Black List screenplay by Julia Hart, The Keeping Room stars Brit Marling and Hailee Steinfeld as sisters who are forced to protect the family farmhouse and fend for themselves when their dad and brothers go off to fight in the war.
When two renegade soldiers arrive in their small town, it doesn’t take long to see that they have no real interests other than destroying everything and everyone around them. When the soldiers find out where the sisters live, it’s up...

Ruminations: Barber’s Sophomore Effort Brings the War Home
Director Daniel Barber returns with sophomore effort The Keeping Room, his first film since the Death Wish derivative Harry Brown (2009) starring Michael Caine. Based on Julia Hart’s screenplay, Barber takes us back to the waning days of the Civil War for this homestead invasion thriller which poses intriguing intersections of class, race, and the struggle for domination and survival. But though the presentation is compelling, particularly through its visual strengths and effective editing (often glossing over weaker moments in the script prolonging its formulaic third act), it often seems as if the film isn’t exploring its own potential, meekly elegiac in tone as it teases notions of female agency amidst an apathetic and violent backdrop.
Augusta (Brit Marling) and her younger sister Louise (Hailee Steinfeld) have been left without the comfort of men on their South Carolina homestead as the Civil War rages on.

Could we be seeing a quiet resurgence of the Western? During the Comic-Con presentation for "The Hateful Eight," Quentin Tarantino talked about being a Western director, and said that he doesn't feel like he's earned the right to call himself that until and unless he makes a third Western. The idea that we could see three Westerns inside of a decade, much less from one filmmaker, feels sort of groundbreaking considering how many times the genre has been pronounced dead over the years. What's really exciting is seeing that there are big studio Westerns being made as well as small indie Westerns, and once again, as in the heyday of the genre, any numbers of stories are being told. The Western is the American mythic form, a type of storytelling that allows us to tell big moral stories against this remarkable backdrop. And it sounds like "The Keeping Room" is...

Michael Caine's upcoming slate includes Vin Diesel's The Last Witch Hunter and the sequel to Now You See Me, but while he's keeping busy in elder-statesman roles, it looked as if 2009's Harry Brown was his final film as the lead. Happily that turned out not to be the case, since he couldn't resist Paolo Sorrentino's Youth. You can get a taste of the results in this just-released new trailer."I've retired about 30 times," Caine told Empire recently. "I always retire and then someone comes along with an offer you can't refuse. I wasn't going to play any more leading roles. I don't like it because you've got to get up early in the morning for eight weeks. But I just had to do Youth. It was wonderful." Sorrentino (This Must Be The Place, The Great Beauty) wrote and directed the film, which involves Caine's retired orchestra...

True Grit star Hailee Steinfeld will be making her third foray into the Western genre later this year in The Keeping Room, alongside Another Earth and The East star Brit Marling.
The Keeping Room, whose first trailer has now been released, marks the debut of screenwriter Julia Hart, with Harry Brown director Daniel Barber helming the feature. Steinfeld and Marling are joined onscreen by Muna Otaru, Kyle Soller, Ned Dennehy, and Sam Worthington.
The film’s synopsis is as follows:
Left without men in the dying days of the American Civil War, three Southern women – two sisters and one African-American slave – must fight to defend their home and themselves from two rogue soldiers who have broken off from the fast-approaching Union Army.
The Keeping Room originally ended up on The Black List, a collection of sought-after unproduced screenplays, in 2012. The film’s original cast was comprised of Steinfeld, Olivia Wilde,...

Called “a feminist western with bite” (Indiewire) and “a beautifully breathless revisionist western” midway between Cold Mountain and Straw Dogs (Little White Lies), anchored in the “bold and fearless” performances (Film School Rejects) delivered by its lead women,” Drafthouse Films has released a new trailer for The Keeping Room.
In this radically reimagined American Western set towards the end of the Civil War, Southerner Augusta (Brit Marling, Arbitrage, The East) encounters two renegade, drunken soldiers (Sam Worthington, Avatar & Kyle Soller, BBC’s “Poldark”) who are on a mission of pillage and violence. After escaping an attempted assault, Augusta races back to the isolated farmhouse that she shares with her sister Louise (Hailee Steinfeld, True Grit, Pitch Perfect 2) and their female slave Mad (newcomer Muna Otaru.) When the pair of soldiers track Augusta down intent on exacting revenge, the trio of women are forced to take up arms to fend off their assailants,...

‘Point of view’ in cinematic storytelling is at the crux of the entire issue of equality and sexism in film. Its influence on popular culture – and, in turn, society as a whole – is routinely underestimated. The fact is that the majority of the narratives we watch on our screens are told from the point of view of white men – making their experience the ‘norm,’ and everything else marginal. This creates a skewed cultural perspective, and leads to a situation that reinforces a pervasive sense of entitlement – if your perspective were the only one regularly represented in the media, you would unconsciously assume it was the most important, too. This is why The Keeping Room is a vital film.
In reality, the perspective of white men is, of course, no more important than any other perspective – particularly considering that that point of view is actually in the minority in global terms.

Written and Directed by Simon Blake
UK, 2014
The subject of adolescent criminality is a hot button issue in Britain, playing on the fears generated by rampant urbanization and the generation gap. Cinema has addressed these fears in different ways; Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg riffed on the idea with Hot Fuzz and their friend Joe Cornish cast them as unlikely heroes in Attack the Block while Michael Caine‘s avenging war vet in Harry Brown takes it into the territory of elderly wish fulfilment. Writer/director Simon Blake uses the idea as the narrative and thematic force behind Still; a grim, well-acted yet slightly messy contemporary crime drama.
Set in and around North London, Still introduces Carver (Aidan Gillen) and his ex-wife Rachel (Amanda Mealing) putting flowers on the grave of their deceased teenaged son on the anniversary of his death. Carver has deeply rooted feelings of guilt about...

As the name suggests, the so-called “geri-action” movie involves actors of the elder variety generally behaving in a way not befitting of their advanced years. Liam Neeson kick-started the trend by rebranding himself as an action hero with the Taken films and now everybody seems to be at it.
60-year-old Denzel did it with 2 Guns and The Equalizer, 71-year-old Robert De Niro did it with Killing Season and Grudge Match, and virtually everyone’s at it in The Expendables and Red franchises. Hell, even King of the Cockneys Michael Caine was blasting geezers away in Harry Brown aged 77.
The arthritic-fun doesn’t stop there. Some aging former A-listers who’ve fallen a tad out of favour are now trying to break back into Hollywood’s good books via action movies of their own. 61-year-old Pierce Brosnan had a go last year with The November Man, both Sean Penn (54) and...

If you don't know who Jack O'Connell is, you're about to: the 23-year-old British actor, whose accent is so thick you could easily mistake him for a Dickensian street urchin, stars as Louis Zamperini, a real life hero who won Olympic medals and was then a World War II prison camp survivor, in "Unbroken," the Oscar-bound drama directed by Angelina Jolie. Up until this point, he had starred in small British films like "Harry Brown," "This Is England," and this year's prison drama "Starred Up." Now he's about to jump off.
And for a kid with such exciting career prospects, he is unusually thoughtful and contemplative. Sitting down with him recently to talk about "Unbroken," I got the impression that this all weighs very heavily on him. At one point in the interview he uses the word "we" to discuss the team that helps him make career decisions, but he...

Jack O'Connell has spoken of the friendship he developed with Angelina Jolie on Unbroken.
The actor appears as Olympic athlete Louis Zamperini in the upcoming war biopic, which Jolie directed, and he spoke to Esquire of her "compassion" and hands-on attitude.
"[Angelina] had compassion," said O'Connell. "She supported me throughout. If I'm watching her treat everyone as an equal, that made me feel exactly like that too.
"I spent time with her in the rehearsal period. She set up meetings with my mum and some of my family. So, by the time we go to the set, it felt like I had a bit of a friend."
O'Connell, who has been widely tipped for an Oscar nomination for the role, also spoke about his upbringing as a working-class boy from Derby, saying that this description appears to be important to those in Hollywood.

While the British actor has racked up credits and acclaim across the pond ('This Is England,' 'Skins,' 'Harry Brown') and drew raves for his turn as a volatile young inmate in this year’s award-winning drama 'Starred Up,' this Christmas he tackles his most challenging role yet: Playing American hero Louis Zamperini ..., the Olympic track star, who enlisted in the Air Force when he was O’Connell’s age only to crash land in the Pacific, surviving 47 days adrift in a raft. Rebellious youths riding motorbikes down dirt roads aside, while there are some similarities to Pawel Pawlikoski’s My Summer of Love and this Norfolk, England set story of a dim-witted teen nicknamed Goob, writer-director Guy Myhill strikes a verve of his own in this quixotic feature debut. With cinematographer Simon Tindall providing dreamy summertime shots of fields of wheat adding romanticism to the humdrumness of rural living and Luke Abbott’s unusual electronic soundtrack setting the film firmly in youth culture and contrasting the stillness of the small town’s atmosphere, The Goob announces the arrival of a new British talent worth keeping tabs on.
The first time we meet 16-year-old Goob (Liam Walpole) he is getting off a school bus in his underwear and running through fields while his classmates cheer on. This is the mood of the...

One of the Tiff movies we've been most intrigued by, even if it's somewhat under the radar, is "The Keeping Room." Directed by "Harry Brown" helmer Daniel Barber, and penned by first time screenwriter Julia Hart, it tells the story of three South Carolina woman at the end of the Civil War who find their home besieged by a pair of Yankee soldiers. Brit Marling, Hailee Steinfeld and relative newcomer Muna Otaru play the heroines, while Sam Worthington and newcomer Kyle Soller play their adversaries. While it all sounded promising on paper, it might look even better in practice, as Deadline just debuted the first clip from the film, and it looks solid. The vibe is a sort of Terrence Malick genre picture, and the actresses look very strong, including what could be a star-making performance from Otaru. Of course, we've been wrong before, but amidst all the Tiff noise,...

Exclusive: Courting sales at Toronto this week is Civil War suspense drama The Keeping Room, the tale of three Southern women – Augusta (Brit Marling), her sheltered sister Louise (Hailee Steinfeld), and their long-silent family slave Mad (Muna Otaru) – defending themselves and their isolated farmhouse in the waning days of the war. Sam Worthington and Anna Karenina’s Kyle Soller also star as a pair of marauding Union soldiers in the film. Daniel Barber (Harry Brown) directs from Julia Hart’s 2012 Black List script.
Here’s how Barber sets up Deadline’s exclusive clip: “When Julia and I were working on the script for The Keeping Room, we tried very hard to imagine how the characters would behave with each other. We wanted their relationships to be very real, very natural and unforced. Augusta had this incredible strength of character, she was such a force of nature, she was so headstrong.

Production is already underway on Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions sequel Mission: Impossible 5 with director Christopher McQuarrie at the helm. Tom Cruise is back in action as Ethan Hunt and he's joined again by Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg and Jeremy Renner with Alec Baldwin entering the fray as the head of the CIA, who must deal with the Impossible Mission Force for some reason. Now Deadline has word on who might end up with the chief antagonist role with Prometheus supporting actor Sean Harris being courted for the role. Though the source cautions that this isn't a done deal quite yet. Harris isn't all that well-known in the United States, but the British actor has starred in the UK thriller Harry Brown, the indie 24-Hour Party People, the Belgian Red Riding thriller trilogy and the Showtime series "The Borgias." This could be a big breakthrough role for Harris (along...

Venice - NBC's "The Office" rang frequent laughs from Dwight Schrute's beet farm, with glimpses of backwards Cousin Mose and his feral antics proving particularly fertile ground for comedy ("And as of this morning, we are completely wireless here at Schrute Farms, but as soon as I find out where Mose hid all the wires, we'll get all that power back on.") This kind of vaguely unsettling boys-on-the-farm vibe is played straight in "The Goob", a character piece that has atmosphere to spare, and whose minimal plot is helped along by the happily original setting; this might be the first film shot in Norfolk to premiere at Venice. Self-described as "a psychological Western" and set largely on farmland of sorts in the flat formerly marshy Fens in the East of England (think the reclaimed bits of the Everglades without the redeeming features of exotic wildlife or sunshine), The Goob is...
