Dream-like episode
This is a whimsical 1940s-set episode as AJ Simon tries tracking down the lost manuscript of a hard-boiled novelist.
As the main character in the novels of the novelist in question is Sam Chandler it's obviously a play on the writers Raymond Chandler (who wrote about detective Philip Marlowe--remember Rick's dog?) and Dashielle Hammett, who invented Sam Spade of THE MALTESE FALCON.
The episode looks beautiful and they did lovely work on the women's hair, which seems authentic.
AJ does narration over the action. As is typical in these situations the narration, particularly in similes, is overwritten to the point of being pure parody. But then Chandler, in particular, often did that sort over overwriting himself.
Worth a peek.
