Germany’s Amusement Park Film is developing an English-language remake of the French-Italian movie “Les Aventuriers,” with Edward Berger on board to direct, and “Next Door,” a Berlin-set dark comedy that will mark the directorial debut of actor Daniel Bruhl.
Berger, who is known for helming “Deutschland 83″ and Benedict Cumberbatch-starrer “Patrick Melrose,” is co-developing the remake of “Les Aventuriers.” Gregory Burke, the BAFTA-nominated writer of “71” and “7 Days in Entebbe,” is writing the screenplay.
“Les Aventuriers” is a 1967 movie directed by Robert Enrico and starring Alain Delon and Lino Ventura. Based on a novel by José Giovanni, the story revolves around two likable underachievers who are best friends and set off to go treasure-hunting off the coast of Africa.

Denise Richards will star in sci-fi action film “Timecrafters.”
“Timecrafters: The Treasure of Pirate’s Cove” is the first movie in a planned franchise about time-traveling seamen who try to retrieve a treasure map from kids in a local town called Pirate’s Cove. The travelers, who originally lost the map, have to adapt to new technology and modern ways of life as they have fast-forwarded through time some 300 years after lightning struck their ship and forced them through a portal into a modern generation.
Richards will play a single mom named Victoria Dare who struggles with the loss of her husband and copes by gravitating toward a slew of unsuitable partners in search of the best one to help raise her son. Malcolm McDowell (“A Clockwork Orange”) will star alongside Richards, playing Captain Lynch, a villain who leads the pirates looking for the elusive treasure map, and Eric Balfour...

The 19th Annual Animation Show of Shows January 9, 2018 NYC
The history of my personal love for animation (and the history of the Annual Animation Show of Shows) is laid out in my review for the 18th Annual Animation Show of Shows.
The newest collection of animated shorts had its initial premiere screening in Fall 2017. It was then shown at the Quad Cinema in January 2018. Unlike last year -- when there was only a single showing of the collection, at the Leonard Nimoy Thalia on the Upper West Side -- this year the show ran for two weeks, with two to four screenings per day.
As noted in my earlier review, in watching these series' one is immediately struck by just how wide a variety of animation types and styles there are: from "traditional" to watercolor, from stop-motion to claymation, from collage to puppetry, and beyond. Also interesting is the sheer...

Naboer (Next Door)
Screenplay by Pål Sletaune
Directed by Pål Sletaune
Denmark/Norway/Sweden, 2005
Twists appear to be quite the common topic in this column lately. This time out the issue isn’t an actual twist, but the fracturing of a psyche that gives the idea of a twist. There’s no twist to spoil in Naboer because such a twist never takes place. From the start Naboer is the tale of a man who has lost his grip with reality. The question isn’t of the twists to come, but the journey through the mind of a damaged individual.
Naboer starts off plainly enough, and such a start is key to the films effectiveness. Josh is a sympathetic figure in the beginning of the film, and he’s again a sympathetic figure in the final shot of Naboer. In between the beginning and the end we embark on a crazy journey with Josh.

As most cinema-goers become mesmerised by Rooney Mara's performance as Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's remake of 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' lest we forget that is was in fact Noomi Rapace who also excelled in the same role in Niels Arden Oplev's Swedish original that first caught our eye. But today's snippet is focusing on Rapace's new Norwegian horror thriller 'Babycall'. The movie opened in its native Norway last October and is now set to arrive in UK theatres next month. 'Babycall' was written and directed by Pal Sletaune ('Next Door' Aka 'Naboer') and co-stars Kristoffer Joner and Vetle Qvenild Werring ('Cold Prey 2' Aka 'Fritt vilt II'). Rapace will be seen later this year in Ridley Scott's new sci-fi epic 'Prometheus'.

I first came across Norway's Pål Sletaune in 2005 with the release of his third feature, Naboer. Released on these shores as Next Door, the film is a gripping, twisty, punishing psychosexual thriller that remains a huge favorite of mine and has left me waiting for whatever Sletaune may do next ever since. What he's doing is Babycall, a new thriller starring The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo's Noomi Rapace as young mother who believes she hears a murder through her child's baby monitor.
Though he's editing the film right now, Sletaune was good enough to answer a few of our questions via email.
You gained a certain amount of notoriety for turning down the directing job on American Beauty and I notice going over your filmography that you have at least a co-writer credit on every one of your films. Have you deliberately chosen to only film your own...

We first wrote about upcoming Norwegian horror flick Skjult all the way back in December and with the official release of the film just a few days away a pair of new TV spots have just turned up online.
Kai Knutsen fled through the woods, from his crazed mother 20 years ago. Now the woman he hated more than anything on earth is dead, and he has inherited the house in the forest. It has a cruel secret.
This one is notable first of all for the presence of star Kristoffer Joner, an actor who is solid in pretty much everything he does but is particularly well suited for this sort of dark, psychological fare as anyone who has seen him in Naboer (Next Door) can tell you. And beyond Joner it just looks really, really good ... director Pål Øie clearly knows his way around the genre and he’s going for it pretty hard here.

Oh, this makes Todd a happy boy. Though I really love Norway’s Kristoffer Joner in straight drama - the man is not considered one of the region’s very best for nothing, after all - I have always thought that the man is particularly well suited to genre film. Joner has a sort of washed out, wan, everyman quality to him that allows a smart director to play just about anything off of him, a quality Pal Sletaune put to stunning use in 2005’s Naboer (Next Door). Joner hasn’t done genre since but he’s back into the fold now - and back in a big way - playing the lead in Pål Øie’s Skjult (Hidden).
