It’s fitting that Ron Howard’s documentary “Jim Henson Idea Man” gets its name from the man himself. During an early bit of voiceover, we hear the “Sesame Street” and “Muppets” creator describe his take on just what it is he does: Idea man. Nothing more, nothing less.
As the film winds on, others are more lofty in their estimations. Henson was a “man with a purpose,” a superhuman, someone for whom terms like “incredibly productive” can’t do justice. He “wanted to do more than was humanly possible,” one of Henson’s adult children tells us. Howard’s film reminds us how true that was during Henson’s lifetime and into his continuing legacy.
Henson was a puppeteer and creator of everything from The Muppets to “Fraggle Rock,” an animator and actor, a TV genius (Henson’s fingerprints are still on every element of “Sesame Street”), and a filmmaker.

We can’t stop here! This is Bear Country! While Russell Crowe passes the Gladiator torch to Paul Mescal for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, the Oscar-winning actor is getting behind the bar for Derrick Borte’s upcoming action-thriller Bear Country. The project marks another collaboration between Crowe and Borte after teaming up for Unhinged, a thriller starring Crowe as an unstable man obsessed with a woman after a spat of road rage.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Bear Country finds Crowe playing an aging but redoubtable club owner, Manco Kapak, whom a masked gunman robs. When the robbery sidelines his retirement plans and his girlfriend grows distant, his aspirations to live a quiet life shatter like glass breaking against a hardwood floor. As cartel bosses harass Manco and a young status seeker aims to purchase the club, Kapak must decide how to show them who the boss is.

The biggest night in Hollywood is here. Yes, it’s finally time for the 2024 Academy Awards. As the red carpet starts filling up with familiar faces and the ceremony gets underway, here’s a look at the five stars nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role, from Oppenheimer’s Cillian Murphy to Rustin’s Colman Domingo. Hint: They’re all no more than 11 years apart.

You can probably sum it all up in just one word: Barbenheimer.
It’s not a word found in Webster’s, but one that’s instantly recognizable to movie fans and everyone in all areas of the entertainment industry. Now it’s probably your key entry into the closing act of the very long Oscar season, one that started in earnest over Labor Day with the fall festivals at Venice and Telluride, and just a week later at Toronto. But really, this year got a significant start at Cannes with the debuts in May of Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall, Grand Prize winner The Zone of Interest, and the World Premiere of Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.

The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Actor are Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”), Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”), and Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”). Murphy (16/5) is favored to win by our odds, followed in order by Giamatti (18/5), Cooper (9/2), Wright (9/2), and Domingo (9/2).
Whereas last year’s lead male lineup was the first in almost nine decades to consist entirely of Oscars newcomers, this one includes three rookies and two general veterans. Standing alone in having already competed for this specific award is Cooper, who was previously recognized for “Silver Linings Playbook” (2013), “American Sniper” (2015), and “A Star Is Born” (2019). Since he personally helmed both “A Star Is Born” and “Maestro,” he is now the fourth person to direct himself to multiple acting nominations, following Laurence Olivier, Warren Beatty, and Clint Eastwood.

Based on the entire history of the Oscars, Best Actor is the category that typically features the longest nominated performances, and that certainly rings true this year. While the modern academy has seen fit to recognize several unusually short lead male turns, they refrained from doing so in 2024 and instead made the current lineup the first since 2019’s to exclusively include actors who pass the one-hour and 50% screen time marks. By both metrics, this constitutes only the 14th such instance ever.
The 2024 Best Actor nominees have an average screen time of one hour, 25 minutes, and 54 seconds, or 64.31% of their respective films. These amounts are over 15 minutes and 5% greater than those applying to the 2023 contenders. In terms of actual time, their average is the eighth highest in the category’s 96-year existence, while their percentage mean is the 20th highest.

"The Beverly Hillbillies" is the platonic ideal of a high-concept sitcom hook. At its essence, it's simply "Poor folks get stinking rich and move to Beverly Hills." That's probably all CBS needed to hear from creator Paul Henning, who, between 1962 and 1971, exploited this simple premise to the tune of nine seasons and 274 episodes. During this span, "The Beverly Hillbillies" was one of the top-rated shows on TV.
How could such a simple premise, which was never really tweaked, sustain a series for nearly a decade? This question perpetually flummoxed the nation's TV critics, who generally loathed the show, but anyone who gorged on "The Beverly Hillbillies" throughout their formative couch potato years (during its initial run or via syndication) knows the answer is obvious: it's the cast, stupid.

A jam-packed weekend of last-gasp Oscar campaigning — the film Academy’s final round of voting opened on Feb. 22 and will close on Feb. 27 — kicked off on Saturday night with the 30th SAG Awards, the first major awards show ever to be streamed on Netflix. But do Saturday night’s results actually provide reliable clues about what will happen two weeks from Sunday night at the 96th Oscars?
I would argue that they probably do.
SAG Award winners are determined by the roughly 160,000 members of SAG-AFTRA, the world’s largest union of actors, whereas Oscar winners are determined by the roughly 9,500 voting members of the film Academy, 86 percent of whom are not actors, which would suggest that any overlap is purely coincidental.
But it is quite a statement that SAG-AFTRA members voted best actor in a film — which has long looked to be neck-and-neck between Cillian Murphy for Oppenheimer over Paul Giamatti...

There’s a saying over here in the UK about London buses. You wait so long for one and then two turn up at once. That notion could play out at this year’s Academy Awards as this 2024 ceremony could be the second in a row where all four acting winners are rookie nominees.
This happened last year when Michelle Yeoh edged out Cate Blanchett (“Tár”) to win Best Actress for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” while her co-stars also emerged victorious. Jamie Lee Curtis took home Best Supporting Actress and Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actor. And Best Actor went to “The Whale” star Brendan Fraser.
The last time this played out was in 2006 when Phillip Seymour-Hoffman won Best Actor for “Capote,” Reese Witherspoon took home Best Actress for “Walk the Line,” Rachel Weisz triumphed in Best Supporting Actress for “The Constant Gardener,” and George Clooney emerged victorious...

Adding to his awards season accolades, Paul Giamatti was honored with the Cinema Vanguard Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Wednesday, where he sat down for a conversation about his long career and journey to The Holdovers.
In a 75-minute chat moderated by The Hollywood Reporter‘s Scott Feinberg, Giamatti walked the Santa Barbara audience through his pivot from wanting to study primate anthropology to pursuing acting after his father died. He reflected on early roles in Private Parts, Planet of the Apes (“I was really disappointed I couldn’t play a gorilla. I was like, ‘I can’t be a gorilla, why not?’ They’re like, ‘You look more like an orangutan'”) and eventually American Splendor, where he said, “I remember at the time thinking, this is probably the first and last time I’m gonna lead [a movie] like this.”

If there’s one word to describe Paul Giamatti’s most common type of role, it’s “curmudgeon.” The Yale-trained actor has the extraordinary range needed to take on various parts, but his most famous characters tend to have sharp minds and even sharper tongues. His most acclaimed roles, like the wine aficionado Miles in “Sideways,” are irritable and short-tempered with an arrogance and wit that masks their more sensitive interiors.
Giamatti’s latest role leans into that casting type harder than almost any of his other parts, and has clinched the actor his first ever Best Actor nomination. In “The Holdovers,” which reunites Giamatti with “Sideways” director Alexander Payne, the actor is at his surliest as Paul Hunham: a stuffy and strict English professor at an all-boys boarding school. The ’70s throwback Christmas comedy is an astonishing actor showcase for Giamatti, as well as his two co-stars Dominic Sessa and Da’Vine Joy Randolph,...

This article contains spoilers for The Holdovers.
“Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.” – Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
Though a dark horse in this year’s Oscar race for Best Picture, it’s no surprise that Alexander Payne’s latest dramedy, The Holdovers, is primed to clean up—or even upset—key acting and screenplay categories. Less of a candy-colored spectacle than Barbie, and certainly not as gravely bombastic as Oppenheimer, this quiet and philosophical story is all about messy, painfully ordinary mortals finding hope and redemption in everyday gestures.
Smart and well-structured as an original script, the performances of the three central figures are what really brings The Holdovers to relatable life. So much so that while the broad strokes of the movie’s ending seem unfair and cruel, viewers are still left smiling, with many calling The Holdovers a new Christmas movie staple.

Another Russell Crowe and Liam Hemsworth collaboration was not a square on our 2024 pop culture Bingo card, yet it looks like we're about to check it off. Moviegoers are due to see the pair of Aussies team up for the second time in as many years in February's military action thriller "Land of Bad." The pair recently co-starred in the 2022 movie "Poker Face" (no relation to the TV show of the same name), a thriller about a high stakes poker game gone wrong that was directed by Crowe himself.
This time around it's not a card game that goes wrong, but a mission. "Land of Bad" follows a group of military men on an extraction assignment in the Philippines that takes a bloody turn, leaving one young officer at the mercy of the elements and local militia. Fortunately, he's not alone: he's got Russell Crowe's drone pilot droning in his ear,...

It’s been almost 20 years since Paul Giamatti’s last Oscar nomination, for Ron Howard’s Cinderella Man in 2006. This year, with Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, Giamatti scores his long-overdue first lead nod after coming extremely close with another Payne collaboration, Sideways, in 2004.
The Holdovers follows a curmudgeonly teacher (Giamatti) at a New England boarding school, forced to watch over a small group of students over the holidays. He’s joined on campus by a grieving cook (played by Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who was also nominated today) and a rebellious senior looking for trouble (newcomer Dominic Sessa). The film scored five total Oscar nominations Tuesday, including for picture and original screenplay.
Tuesday morning, the veteran character actor chatted with The Hollywood Reporter in the wake of his second Oscar nomination to talk about receiving that news, his collaboration with Payne and what he might like to try out in future projects.

“Oppenheimer” has surged ahead of its competition, potentially becoming one of the most dominant Oscar winners since “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008), which garnered eight statuettes. Looking at the state of the race post-nominations, the Universal Pictures’ blockbuster could make an even bigger impact.
Christopher Nolan’s historical drama about the father of the Atomic bomb leads the tally with 13, making it the 11th movie to reach such a gargantuan Oscars nomination count. Six of the previous 10 films scored best picture wins, including classics like “Gone with the Wind” (1939), “Forrest Gump” (1994), and “The Shape of Water” (2017). The four that lost are “Mary Poppins” (1964), “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” (1966), “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” (2001), and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (2008), none of which were heavily favored to triumph in their respective years. But that’s probably not the fate of “Oppenheimer,” particularly after its victories at the Golden...

After landing his second Oscar nomination on Tuesday morning for his starring turn in Alexander Payne’s dramedy The Holdovers, Paul Giamatti spoke with Deadline about the reasons horror is currently at top of mind for him, the filmmakers active in that genre today that he’d most like to work with, his viral In-n-Out moment following the Golden Globes, a missed opportunity to work with David Lynch, and more.
Speaking to the genre filmmakers he admires, Giamatti named Hereditary‘s Ari Aster and Nope‘s Jordan Peele, though he gave particular focus to Zach Cregger, who caught his attention with his 2022 breakout feature, Barbarian. “I thought that movie was really, really well done, and that’s kind of one of my favorite horror movies I’ve seen recently,” the actor said. “That movie really struck a chord with me, and it stuck with me.”

Scott Stuber, the film chief at Netflix, is leaving the streaming service in March. He’ll (again) form his own company.
Stuber will stay with the streamer through the middle of March, a person with knowledge of the plan told IndieWire. Scott Stuber is leaving Netflix. The chairman of Netflix film since 2017, he will be leaving in March to start his own media company.
This has been in the works for some time, as rumors were rampant he had a different philosophy than Netflix toppers, whose prime focus has always been to make premium movies to be consumed by streaming. Other streamers have evolved into a theatrical first window for many of their big budget films, as Apple did in securing traditional distributors to globally release films like Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon. While Netflix has acquired some posh theaters in qualifying cities like New York and Los Angeles, its business plan is mainly global streaming without the giant P&a spend needed for films to do big movie house grosses.
Stuber will stay to help the transition, and then Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria will oversee things until a permanent replacement is secured.

The Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards changed a lot in the Oscar race for Best Actor, but not necessarily how we were expecting. Many Experts, Editors, and Users (myself included) thought we’d see Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”) start to build momentum, but it was actually Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”) who got a significant lift. Now Giamatti ranks second in our Oscar odds, right behind Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”). Scroll down to see the graph illustrating the state of the race as of this writing. Whereas five films each received multiple Cca Awards last year, that only applied to three this time, with the last being triple acting winner “The Holdovers.”

Paul Giamatti, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is one of the greatest character actors of all time.
Giamatti is an Oscar nominee and winner of Emmy, Spirit and Critics Choice awards, three Golden Globe awards and three SAG awards, with credits to his name including 2003’s American Splendor, 2004’s Sideways, 2005’s Cinderella Man, 2006’s The Illusionist, the 2008 limited series John Adams, 2012’s Win Win, 2013’s 12 Years a Slave and the drama series Billions, which ran from 2016 through earlier this year.
His most recent credit is 2023’s The Holdovers, which reunites him with his Sideways director Alexander Payne; in which he plays a cranky boarding school teacher who is made even crankier by having to spend the 1970 Christmas break on campus with an aggrieved student; and for which he has already won best actor Golden Globe and National Board of Review awards...

This year’s Golden Globes ceremony saw a menu of sushi and champagne for winners, nominees and guests. But for a winner, there’s only one meal that pairs best with a statue: In-n-Out Burger. And that’s just how Paul Giamatti – who won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for The Holdovers – celebrated, taking to a nearby joint after the show.
As seen in a candid snapshot, Paul Giamatti is checking his phone, two glorious In-n-Out Double-Doubles and one beautiful Golden Globe on the table before him – we just hope he’s not looking at the calories!

“Barbie” may have won the box office battle, but “Oppenheimer” won the awards.
The Golden Globes Awards cemented Christopher Nolan’s historical drama as the Oscar frontrunner and made other contenders re-group and re-think their campaign strategies. As Hollywood recovers from an epic night of schmoozing and partying, it’s a good time to take stock of the state of the awards race. Here are eight takeaways from the 2024 Golden Globes.

Paul Giamatti has won the Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy Golden Globe for “The Holdovers.”
The acclaimed Alexander Payne film featured some of Giamatti’s best-ever work, which is saying something, given that his previous team-up with Payne on “Sideways” is considered one of the best performances of the century to date. But his Paul Hunham, an irascible Western Civilization teacher whose life is in thrall to antiquity, captured the hearts of viewers and Globe voters. The film, set at a New England boarding school in 1970, actually felt like one of the New Hollywood classics Payne was obviously aspiring for it to be.
This is Giamatti’s third Golden Globe win after picking up trophies for “John Adams” and “Barney’s Version.” In addition to his three Golden Globe wins, he also has been nominated three other times, for “Sideways,” “Cinderella Man,” and “Too Big to Fail.

Paul Giamatti will be hoping to use the Golden Globes to press forward with his claims for a first Oscar nomination since his 2006 Best Supporting Actor bid for “Cinderella Man.” He stars this year in “The Holdovers,” which could lead him to a Best Actor nomination and has cemented him as the favorite to win Best Comedy/Musical Actor at the upcoming Golden Globes.
He’s nominated alongside Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”), Matt Damon (“Air”), Nicolas Cage (“Dream Scenario”), Joaquin Phoenix (“Beau is Afraid”), and Timothée Chalamet (“Wonka”). Could Chalamet upset the apple cart by claiming a shock win for “Wonka?”
Chalamet plays the role previously occupied by icons Gene Wilder (1971’s “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory”) and Johnny Depp (2006’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”). In the origin story “Wonka,” Chalamet plays a young chocolatier trying to take down the sinister Chocolate Cartel in the hopes of achieving...

Alexander Payne’s heart-tugging Christmas movie “The Holdovers” has been building upbeat word of mouth since it wowed crowds at Telluride, was runner-up at TIFF for the People’s Choice Award, and pulled audiences back to theaters ($18 million domestic).
Which is why it’s likely to score a scad of Oscar nominations. Payne has been nominated three times for Best Director and won twice for Adapted Screenplay (“Sideways” and “The Descendants”), but “The Holdovers” marks the feature-screenwriting debut of sitcom veteran David Hemingson, the sole credited writer on the film.
Payne’s lead actors usually land nominations, although Paul Giamatti was robbed for 2004’s “Sideways.” Now Academy voters have a chance to show their love for Giamatti, who is in rare form in “The Holdovers” as a hidebound prep school professor playing against rookie Dominic Sessa as a rebellious student, and wily veteran Da’Vine Joy Randolph as the school cook...

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.
First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.
We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

The 1935 Best Actor lineup at the Academy Awards featured three Oscar newcomers in the forms of Clark Gable, Frank Morgan (“The Affair of Cellini”), and William Powell (“The Thin Man”), with Gable winning. Then came an 88-year gap. It wasn’t until earlier this year that voters nominated another lineup in this category made entirely out of first-time nominees. That list consisted of winner Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) plus Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”), Bill Nighy (“Living”), and Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”).

The Palm Springs Film Awards will honor Paul Giamatti with the Icon Award for his performance in “The Holdovers.” He will receive the award at the Jan. 4 event at the Palm Springs Convention Center.
“In ‘The Holdovers,’ Paul Giamatti inhabits a complex character who is both challenging and rewarding, and ultimately reminds us of what it means to be connected as human beings,” festival chairman Nachhattar Singh Chandi said in a statement. “For his storied career of quintessential cinematic roles, it is our honor to present the Icon Award to Paul Giamatti for this career-best performance.”
In Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers,” Giamatti portrays a grumpy New England prep school teacher who forms a bond with a troubled student and the school’s head cook, who is grieving after the loss of her son. Paul Giamatti talks about finding the heart in the protagonist of Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers.
He is rightly known for his versatility, but Paul Giamatti has a special knack for principled, witty curmudgeons. “It seems to come to me,” he says of the personality type, “and it is hard for me to know whether I manifest it for myself or it’s something people have seen me do. The biggest story of the 1936 summer Olympics in Berlin was Black track and field star Jesse Owens winning four gold medals and putting the lie to Adolf Hitler’s theories of race supremacy. A less-heralded U.S. gold medal triumph over host country Nazi Germany glides onto screens this Christmas with The Boys in the Boat from MGM Amazon Studios, directed by George Clooney.

Paul Giamatti turned in one of the best performances of 2004 in Alexander Payne‘s “Sideways.” He played Miles, a depressed writer who takes a trip to Santa Barbara County to celebrate his friend’s (Thomas Haden Church) engagement. He reap bids at the Critics Choice, SAG and Golden Globes awards. It was shock when he was snubbed at the Oscars in favor of eventual winner Jamie Foxx (“Ray”) plus Don Cheadle (“Hotel Rwanda”), Johnny Depp (“Finding Neverland”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Aviator”), and Clint Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby”).
The academy can finally rectify that oversight as Giamatti and Payne have reunited for “The Holdovers,” which Focus Features is releasing on Oct. 27. Giamatti is a curmudgeon of a teacher forced to stay behind and look after students staying at his school throughout the holiday period. Dominic Sessa and Da’Vine Joy Randolph are great in supporting roles but it’s Giamatti who is the star of the picture.

The Telluride Film Festival has launched many Oscar Best Picture winners, from “The King’s Speech” and “Slumdog Millionaire” to “12 Years a Slave” and “Moonlight.” Oscar campaigners bring their films here to build critical reaction and positive buzz, often amplifying awareness at subsequent festivals in Toronto, New York, and London. Last year, “Tár” and “Women Talking” made it to Best Picture nominations.
This year, the film most likely to wind up in the Best Picture race is Yorgos Lanthimos’ surreal fantasy “Poor Things” (Searchlight), which premiered in Venice to rave reviews (Metascore 94) and moved on to wow Telluride crowds. Two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne returns to the big screen with his entertaining and crowd-pleasing film “The Holdovers” which debuted at the Telluride Film Festival on Thursday night, where he was in-person to introduce.
With a 1970s aesthetic, a sharp script by David Hemingson, and a trio of exquisite performers, the film feels like the slam-dunk Oscar contender the establishment members of the Academy can get behind.
“The Holdovers” reunites Payne with his “Sideways” star Paul Giamatti. It tells the story of a curmudgeonly instructor at an elite New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the students with nowhere to go. He forms an unlikely bond with a damaged, brainy troublemaker (played by newcomer Dominic Sessa) and the head cook (portrayed by Da’Vine Joy Randolph).

“The Holdovers,” director Alexander Payne’s first film since his 2017 flop “Downsizing,” scored strong reviews as a return to form for the two-time Oscar winner following its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on Thursday.
“We’ve all seen our share of stories about inspirational teachers. ‘The Holdovers’ is dedicated to the opposite sort: a hard-ass named Paul Hunham whom everyone hates,” Variety critic Peter Debruge wrote in his positive notice. “The feeling is mutual, as Mr. Hunham considers most of the kids enrolled at Barton Academy to be entitled little monsters, and the administration to be even more corrupt. Judging by the evidence director Alexander Payne provides, Mr. Hunham’s not wrong. Producer Sandy Marshall said the actors wanted to show support for the writers’ union because “without their members, there would be no stories to experience and no escape from the difficulties of the human experience that are often cast upon us. Simply, the artist must support the art.”

The last Academy Awards, which saw “Everything Everywhere All at Once” win Best Picture, featured a history-making lineup in the Best Actor category. All five of the nominees were newcomers: Brendan Fraser won for “The Whale” while Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”), Bill Nighy (“Living”), and Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) all reaped their first bids.
That was the first time this happened since 1935 when there were only three Best Actor nominees: Clark Gable (“It Happened One Night”), Frank Morgan (“The Affairs of Cellini”), and William Powell (“The Thin Man”); Gable won. But after such a long gap between those two records, could we have a case of London buses and see another Best Actor lineup full of newcomers again at this year’s Oscars? Let’s take a look.

Actor Russell Crowe has been known for his short tempter in the past. But his boxing film Cinderella Man had a surprising and positive effect on the actor.

Crowe’s temper had a habit of landing him in hot water. The Gladiator star was involved in more than a few controversies in the past after losing his cool. Some of these scandals came from what could’ve been minor inconveniences, and even earned the actor a felony charge. In an interview with Australia’s Sunday Night (via E News), Crowe explained what the source of his hot temper might have been.
“I’m extremely sensitive, and that’s probably where some of my negative stuff comes from,” Crowe said. “I’m a little bit intuitive, so I know from a handshake whether somebody means me good or ill.

The last time Alexander Payne and Paul Giamatti worked together the result was “Sideways,” the 2004 drama that won Payne an Oscar for adapted screenplay and left Giamatti on the list of egregious Best Actor snubs after the academy shunned the star for his performance. (Giamatti was nominated the following year in the Best Supporting Actor category for “Cinderella Man.”)
Now the two are back together for the upcoming Focus Features comedy-drama “The Holdovers,” a potential return to form for Payne after the mixed response to his 2017 movie “Downsizing.”
Focus released the first trailer for “The Holdovers” on Monday, a throwback piece of marketing that looks like it could have been put together in the 1980s or 1990s. Here’s the logline for the film, which also stars Da’Vine Joy Randolph and newcomer Dominic Sessa: “A curmudgeonly instructor (Giamatti) at a New England prep school is forced to remain on...

Paul Giamatti plays a curmudgeonly private school instructor at a New England prep school in the official trailer for Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers, which dropped on Monday ahead of a Nov. 10 nationwide release for the period dramedy.
A grumpy Giamatti in the film teaser is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students unable to go home to their families. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them, Angus Tully, a damaged, brainy troublemaker played by newcomer Dominic Sessa, and with the school’s head cook (Da’Vine Joy Randolph), who has just lost a son in Vietnam.
“I find the world a bitter and complicated space, and it seems to feel the same about me. I think you and I have this in common,” Giamatti’s character, Paul Hunham, tells Angus at one point in the trailer as their relationship begins to thaw.

Connor Price has been in the spotlight for a long time.
He (and all four of his siblings) started acting young. When he was 10 years old, he was cast in a little movie called Cinderella Man, where he played the son of Russell Crowe. It was his first major role, but definitely not his last: since then, Price has been in dozens of TV shows and movies. When he spoke to Tubefilter earlier this month, he’d just finished filming guest roles for Chicago Med, CSI: Vegas, and FBI: International.
But while Price loves acting, there’s something else he loves even more.

Over his two-decade career, Paddy Considine has played cops, ex-cons, priests, architects, struggling actors, union organizers and rock band managers. But when his agent told him that Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik wanted him to play King Viserys I Targaryen in HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel series, “House of the Dragon,” he couldn’t quite believe it was real.
“I said, ‘Who’s turned this down?’ Because I’m cynical that way,” he says. “My agent was like, ‘I assure you, they’re just coming to you for it.’”
Part of Considine’s disbelief was due to his feeling that the industry at large had only ever seen him as the working-class striver he made his name playing in the 2000s, in films such as “In America,” “My Summer of Love” and “Cinderella Man.”
“I felt like I couldn’t break free from it,” he says. “I was happy to act.

Russell Crowe will receive the Crystal Globe for outstanding artistic contribution to world cinema at the 57th Karlovy Vary Film Festival (June 30-July 8). The Oscar winning actor will also deploy his musical talent with his band Indoor Garden Party, which will perform at the festival’s opening night concert. The festival also revealed Friday that Johnny Depp would appear in its trailer, which will have its premiere at the opening ceremony.

In 1989, he started working in Australian films, with “The Crossing”, “Proof”, and “Romper Stomper”. He won two Australian Academy Awards: supporting actor for “Proof” and best actor for “Romper Stomper.”

Picking up an Oscar nomination (or better yet a win) can often lead to subsequent nominations in the following years. After Eddie Redmayne won Best Actor for “The Theory of Everything” in 2015, he picked up a second nomination the year later for “The Danish Girl.” And Willem Dafoe earned consecutive nominations in 2018 and 2019 for his work on”The Florida Project” and “At Eternity’s Gate.”
The Oscars afterglow is a real thing. So which of this year’s nominated stars could theoretically feel the benefit of this trend? We’ve combed through each of the 20 nominees’ next projects to see who could follow up their bid this year with a potential nomination next year. After all, it’s never too late to start thinking about the next Academy Awards, right?
