Academy Award-winning visionary filmmaker Kevin Costner directs New Line Cinema’s vast Horizon: An American Saga Chapters One and Two, a multi-faceted chronicle covering the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. A story of America too big for one film, this true cinematic event also stars Costner, who co-writes with Jon Baird (The Explorers Guild) and produces through his Territory Pictures.
In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, Horizon: An American Saga explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

It's officially official: We are returning to the "Office" universe. Yes, we say universe because NBC's beloved sitcom isn't being revived or rebooted. Rather, the powers that be have opted to craft a spin-off of sorts set in the same world as the American version of "The Office," albeit centered on a new cast of characters in a new location. Per a press release, the series is set to begin filming in July for an eventual release on the streaming service Peacock, and the first plot details have been revealed.
The currently untitled "Office" spin-off hails from Greg Daniels, who officially came on board to develop the project last year. He also adapted the original British "Office" series for American television. Daniels is working alongside "Nathan for You" co-creator Michael Koman. The show has been ordered to series at Peacock and is being described as "a new mockumentary series...

Screen writer and producer Jonathan Nolan is much more than just the sibling of famous director Christopher Nolan. Having played a significant part in The Prestige director’s massive success, the younger brother of the Oscar winner has held his own in the industry with many successful projects to his name.

One of the feathers in his cap as a writer and producer was the 2011 crime drama Person of Interest which ran successfully for 5 seasons. The show starred Jim Cavaziel in the lead role which earned the actor a lot of praise. In an interview before the series went on air, Nolan discussed one outstanding performance of the star that made him confident that he had taken the right decision to cast him.

From sharing repugnance towards Wbd’s handling of Turner Classic Movies to blasting Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of Napoleon, Brian Cox has never bothered filtering his opinions. Recently, while sharing his distaste for Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, the Succession star stressed that Phoenix was terrible in the role, claiming he’d done a better job as France’s first emperor.
However, his criticisms weren’t limited to Scott’s historical epic, as the actor also took shots at one of Mel Gibson’s most acclaimed works to date, which scored five Oscar wins, including Best Picture.

Marvel on Monday dropped a new trailer for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” one that includes a whole lot more Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) than the Super Bowl’s teaser-trailer. The “official trailer” has plenty of meta Disney-is-a-prude references courtesy of (mostly) Ryan Reynolds: There’s the “pegging” joke and one about the “one thing” MCU boss Kevin Feige would not let “Deadpool” do. Per Wade Wilson, that’s cocaine (no matter what you call it). Feige is among the film’s producers.
Deadpool also calls for a “third-act flashback” and a “big, slow-motion action sequence” in the trailer. The “Deadpool” films don’t just break the fourth wall, they run a Colossus through it.
Shawn Levy directs “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which also stars Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen.

At first, I was shocked by the news that Participant Media was dying. Such an appealing company. Smart. Mindful. Vibrant. Forward-thinking. The producer of intelligent films like Spotlight and Green Book, with a distinctly progressive message.
How could this be?
Then it finally hit me. Whatever else may have happened—announcing the shutdown, proprietor Jeff Skoll cited “revolutionary” changes in the entertainment business—Participant went under, I believe, because most of high-end Hollywood jumped into the company’s basically sound but modestly sized boat. The purpose-film niche was swamped.
It’s almost hard to remember that 20 years ago, when Participant was founded, the notion of a self-consciously message-oriented, activist film company was actually novel.
But, cinematically speaking, it was a much different world in 2004. The top movie that year was Shrek 2—not much message there. Culturally, the big story was a religious film, The Passion of the Christ. That hasn’t happened since.

The new iteration of “The Office” currently in development has started to flesh out its cast.
Variety has confirmed with sources that Sabrina Impacciatore and Domhnall Gleeson are attached to the project, which remain in development at Universal Television. They would occupy two roles in what would be an ensemble cast, like the original versions of the show.
Reps for Utv declined to comment.
Greg Daniels and Michael Koman are co-creating the new series. It has previously been reported that it is not a reboot of “The Office” but is set in the same universe, meaning it would likely be set in a different office setting with all new characters.
Gleeson has recently starred in shows such as “Alice & Jack,” “The Patient,” “Frank of Ireland,” and “Run.” He is perhaps best known for his role as General Hux in the new “Star Wars” film trilogy. He has also starred in films such as “Frank,...

The Book Of Clarence postulates apostle traits for an invented figure whose place among the apocrypha opens with a chariot race. That's a competition with a heavy wager to pay off a debt to a criminal figure, and over-leveraged borrowing is everywhere in the film.
The presence of a parallel Messiah can't but be compared to Life Of Brian. This was filmed in Matera, the Unesco heritage Italian village carved into the cliffs of a steep valley which was also where The Passion Of The Christ was shot. If, as Blanche Dubois once said, “The opposite of death is desire,” then Luca Guadagnino will live forever, and his latest film — a transcendently sweaty tennis love triangle so turned on by the heat of competition that its sex scenes feel like foreplay and its rallies feel like porn — is possibly the most unbridled portrait of resurrection since “The Passion of the Christ.”

Sasquatch Sunset releases April 12, 2024.
David and Nathan Zellner — known professionally as Zellner Bros. — may not be a household name (yet), but their films have garnered a reputation for defying the standards set by Hollywood. As true auteurs they bring a distinct style and vision to their often unconventional stories. No film is a truer depiction of this than the bigfoot dramedy Sasquatch Sunset. The film — which acts as a sort of expansion upon their 2011 short-film Sasquatch Birth Journal 2 — premiered at Sundance earlier this year.

To understand why is the industry so conflicted over how to release movies, check out the contradictory paths of two Amazon films, “The Beekeeper” and “Road House.”
The first, which stars Jason Statham as a righteous avenger, is a $40 million production acquired by Amazon MGM for the US. It grossed $66 million in its domestic theatrical release and went on to become a hit as a $19.99 PVOD. Currently, it’s $5.99 to rent and is #1 at iTunes (which ranks by transactions) as well as Fandango (which tracks by revenue).
That’s nearly unheard of at Fandango, which sometimes see its entire top 10 comprised of $19.99 titles. It is also unusual for a mid-level success like “The Beekeeper” to be so dominant on VOD.
Meantime, “Road House” skipped theaters and leads Reelgood’s list of most-streamed movies for the week ending last Wednesday.
At Netflix, another random theatrical release dominates its most-watched movie chart.

What the movie-streaming public wants depends on which top 10 chart you prefer. This week offered little consistency and some outright contradictions.
One thing is clear: Jake Gyllenhaal’s straight-to-streaming “Road House” remake is a massive hit. Amazon Prime reported over 50 million worldwide viewers through its second streaming weekend and gateway app Reelgood reported it as the week’s #1 movie for March 21-27 in the U.S.
“The Accountant,” a 2016 Warner Bros. drama starring Ben Affleck, is currently #1 at Netflix. On Easter weekend “The Passion of the Christ” led VOD at iTunes, while the just-released $19.99 “Imaginary” (Lionsgate) topped Fandango’s revenue-calculated list. (It was #20 at iTunes.) For a second week, Google Play did not update its list.
“Ordinary Angels” (also Lionsgate) is #2 at Fandango, but #14 at iTunes. Since Fandango calculates by revenue, that list favors PVODs — but this week, six of its top 10 rented for $5.99 or less; “The Passion of the Christ,...

It may come as a surprise to some that Mel Gibson is indeed still working. Not only that, but one of his recent thrillers — 2022's "On the Line" — was ranked one of the three most-watched films on Netflix in the last week. It seems that despite his ... controversies ... Gibson is still able to draw an audience.
For those too young to remember, Gibson was arrested in Los Angeles for driving under the influence. Upon his arrest, Gibson unleashed a drunken tirade that included several sexist and antisemitic remarks that were leaked to the public by TMZ. Gibson's antisemitic comments only calcified what many critics had theorized about the filmmaker when he made "The Passion of the Christ" in 2004, a film that was accused of leaning into antisemitic stereotypes. In the powerful movie, The Passion of the Christ, chronicling the end of Christ’s life, Jim Caviezel delivers a nuanced, moody performance that doesn’t deny Jesus’ humanity. It helped that Caviezel is a true believer. A devout Catholic, he went to confession and received Holy Communion every day while shooting Passion in Italy. The 2004 work, directed and co-written by Braveheart and Lethal Weapon star Mel Gibson, brings the Stations of the Cross — 14 scenes depicting His final 12 hours — to the big screen in excruciating detail. The movie harrowingly shows the Agony in the Garden of Olives, His betrayal by Judas Iscariot, His arrest and torture, the carrying of the cross, and His crucifixion and death. (Credit: Newmarket Releasing/courtesy Everett Collection) Key moments in Jesus’ life, from the Last Supper to the Sermon on the Mount, and biblical events like Peter’s denial of Christ are seen throughout. Exclusive: Fox Nation is lining up more religious content ahead of Easter, snapping up the rights to both The Chosen and The Passion of the Christ.
Passion of the Christ will be available beginning March 8, while Seasons 1 through 3 of The Chosen are set to debut on Fox Nation on March 10.
Both titles will be available through the peak viewing season, with Passion remaining through Easter and The Chosen staying even longer, through April 21.
In addition to these titles, Fox Nation will also be hosting a roundtable discussion to dissect both programs, led by Fox & Friends host Ainsley Earhardt. Details on guests for the roundtable are coming soon, Fox says.
The Chosen has become somewhat of a hot commodity lately, with The CW picking up the first three seasons last summer. The series about the life of Jesus is from creator, director and producer Dallas Jenkins and stars Jonathan Roumie as the King of Kings.
The Chosen is described as the first multi-season series of its kind. Set against the backdrop of Jewish oppression in first-century Israel, the seven-season show shares an authentic and intimate look at Jesus’ revolutionary life and teachings. The fourth season hit theaters in February, and Season 5 is in production.
It began as a crowdsourcing project on the Angel Studios app and turned into a global hit with over 110 million viewers in 175 countries, with plans to make it available in 600 languages. The series has generated 6.5 million followers across social media, made $35 million at box office in special-event theatrical releases and has spawned an apparel line, best-selling books, DVDs and an upcoming series of graphic novels.
Directed by Mel Gibson, The Passion of the Christ is a 2004 film about the last 12 hours in the life of Jesus of Nazareth (Jim Caviezel). The film opens in the Garden of Olives (Gethsemane) where Jesus has gone to pray after the Last Supper. Jesus resists Satan’s temptations. Betrayed by Judas Iscariot, Jesus is arrested and taken back to within the city walls of Jerusalem where the leaders of the Pharisees confront him with accusations of blasphemy and his trial results in a condemnation to death.
The pic remains the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time domestically, with $370.8 million. It was No. 1 at the North American box office for five nonconsecutive weeks.
Fox Nation has been building its platform on faith-based content, including the docu-drama Jesus Crown of Thorns coming in 2025.

Academy Award-winning visionary filmmaker Kevin Costner directs New Line Cinema’s vast “Horizon: An American Saga” Chapters One and Two, a multi-faceted chronicle covering the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West. A story of America too big for one film, this true cinematic event also stars Costner, who co-writes with Jon Baird (“The Explorers Guild”) and produces through his Territory Pictures.
In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, “Horizon: An American Saga” explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s films will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

As the season of film awards and achievements heads towards the night of The Oscars, a select few and equally auspicious award ceremonies are yet to happen. Among them, the Screen Actors Guild Awards seemed to have chosen Robert Downey Jr. as their pick for the Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in Oppenheimer, a deserving accolade that almost all organizations and individuals seem to agree with.

And thus, when the star took to the stage to formally accept the award with his hands, he was sure to give credit to the recent accolades of his career to several actors he has worked with in the past. Among them, he also includes the name of Mel Gibson, the actor and filmmaker who practically brought his career on track again after he made a film that un-blacklisted the star from Hollywood.

Paranoia, at least the kind stemming from a lack of confidence, isn’t the dominant sensation permeating Oliver Stone’s frenzied and decidedly campy pledge of malignance JFK, the film that briefly made conspiracy theorizing not just socially acceptable, but practically a cornerstone of citizens’ civic duty. No, in practice, JFK is as sure of itself as a QAnon truther, setting into centripetal motion hundreds of specious theories and dancing around the logical gaps like Max Ophüls’s camera did the titular jewelry of The Earrings of Madame de… It’s the crown jewel of the small but potent batch of mainstream American films of the late Boomer era that seemingly rode the collective insanity of the cultural zeitgeist to financial reward and cultural cachet—two other obvious examples being Network, which explicitly “articulated the popular rage” that had more or less been building since the Kennedy assassination, and the...

Benedict Fitzgerald, the co-writer of Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, has died. He was 74.
Fitzgerald died Jan. 17 after a long illness at his home in Marsala, Sicily, his cousin Nancy Morgan Ritter told The Hollywood Reporter.
Best known for his work on Gibson’s 2004 Biblical epic, the highest-grossing Christian film, as well as the highest-grossing independent film of all time, Fitzgerald’s other credits include co-writing the screenplay for John Huston’s Wise Blood (1979), the adaptation of Flannery O’Connor’s novel.

I’m trying to stay optimistic. It takes some effort, as just about everyone seems to think the film business is a mess–strike-thinned schedule, cultural chaos, streaming models in flux. But, hey, the Golden Globes audience was up by half, never mind critical reaction to the show. There are still signs of life out there.
So I’ll stick with an earlier prediction, that this will be a big comeback year for the Oscar show.
More, I’ll cautiously suggest that we can expect what you might call an “interstitial hit” between now and next December.
These are movies that seem to come out of nowhere. They arrive with low or no expectations, from companies that are barely on the map. But they work their way into some conceptual or temporal gap in the release schedule, firing up viewers with je ne sais quoi, And suddenly they’re right...

Mel Gibson is the Oscar-winning actor and director who has had his fair share of highs and lows, due in large part to several self-inflicted scandals. Let’s look back at 12 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1956, Gibson and his family moved from New York to Australia, where he first came to prominence as an actor thanks to George Miller‘s original “Mad Max” trilogy, plus leading roles in Peter Weir‘s “Gallipoli” and “The Year of Living Dangerously.” He had equal success in the US, starring in everything from action films (the “Lethal Weapon” franchise) to romantic comedies (“What Women Want”).
He first hit the Oscar jackpot with the 1995 historical epic “Braveheart,” in which he also starred as Scottish warrior William Wallace. That film brought his wins in Best Picture and Best Director. He had similar directorial success with the controversial box-office bonanza “The Passion of the Christ...

2023 has been, broadly speaking, a very good year at the box office. The domestic total for the year will be at or near $9 billion — far exceeding 2022's $7.366 billion total, representing an increase of more than 20 percent year-over-year. More than that, the top three movies of the year, which are "Barbie" ($1.44 billion), "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($1.36 billion), and "Oppenheimer" ($953 million), were not sequels. It's the first time in decades that this has been the case. Unfortunately, the party is going to come to a screeching halt in January as the 2024 release calendar is a barren wasteland, at least for the first chunk of the year.
The Hollywood Reporter recently reported that the 2024 domestic box office could take a hit as large as $2 billion. That would be devastating, to put it lightly. Movie theaters have been operating on anything but stable ground since the pandemic arrived in 2020. The good news is...

A fresh report suggests that the long-gestating buddy cop sequel Lethal Weapon 5 will shoot next year, with Mel Gibson in the director’s chair.
We know that a fifth entry in the Lethal Weapon series has been in the works for a long time. The late, great Richard Donner – director of the first four films – was working on it before he passed away in 2021. Then, in the same year we heard that Mel Gibson, one half of the series’ leading duo was set to take over the directorial reins. Of course, a lot has happened in the world since 2021, with a lot of that turbulence directly affecting Hollywood film production. However, despite all of the uncertainty, Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman (via World of Reel) is reporting that Lethal Weapon 5 will shoot next year.

It's typical for filmmakers to attend the glitzy premieres of their well-financed blockbuster movies, but it takes a certain kind of masochist to watch their movies in a theater with a ticket-buying public. Despite a filmmaker's best intentions, they will never be able to predict how the hoi polloi might respond to their work. Certain moments intended to be heady and serious could very well elicit titters, while laugh lines could land with a thud. Once a film is released, it's out of the director's hands.
But then, sometimes things work perfectly. As Nolan discovered when he snuck into the back of a New York theater to watch his hit film "Oppenheimer" unspool in front of a sold-out house.
As of this writing, Nolan's "Oppenheimer" has earned nearly $950 million worldwide, making it the sixth-highest-grossing R-rated film of all time. Despite being a heady, 3-hour tragedy that picks at the very foundation of American wartime patriotism,...

A star-studded crime thriller from Oscar-nominated director Julian Schnabel is coming our way, with Orcasr Isaac, Jason Momoa, and Gerard Butler leading the cast. The grand-scale Biblical epics that midcentury Hollywood churned out to roaring box-office returns had many drawcards as (so to speak) mass entertainment — brawny action, transporting spectacle, then jaw-dropping effects — but a sense of humor, by and large, wasn’t one of them. That’s something British musician-turned-filmmaker Jeymes Samuel attempts to rectify in his offbeat messiah story “The Book of Clarence,” a newly invented tale that runs parallel to the life and death of Jesus in ways both blithely blasphemous and sincerely Christian. Following on from Samuel’s debut, the rollicking hip-hop western “The Harder They Fall,” with its flagrantly anachronistic remix of genre traditions and a predominantly Black cast, “Clarence” clearly seeks to be the first film loosely of its type to make any pop-cultural impact since Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” nearly 20 years ago.
It’ll certainly prove a hard sell to the U.S.

Child kidnapping accessory charges have been dropped against Fabian Marta, one of the thousands of individuals who crowdfunded the controversial anti-child trafficking movie Sound of Freedom.
As reported in Newsweek, Marta was arrested by St. Louis Metropolitan Police in late July and charged by the Missouri Circuit Court as an accessory to child kidnapping. Per USA Today, the court released a memo on September 25th saying that a grand jury determined there was insufficient evidence to obtain a conviction.
Missouri Circuit Court public information officer Christine Bertelson further clarified to the newspaper that “there was no kidnapping.” Instead, the case was actually the result of “a misunderstanding” between relatives of the children.
Following Marta’s arrest, his attorney, Scott Rosenblum, told St. Louis’ KMOV4 that the charges were “unfounded” because his client was merely offering living space to another suspect in the case in exchange for rehabbing some of Marta’s other properties.

Emily Deschanel and her sister, Zooey Deschanel, have been gracing our screens for years, but did you know that success in Hollywood has been in the family for generations?
The Deschanels' parents were both established in the entertainment industry long before the birth of their daughters. Their father, Caleb Deschanel, is an Oscar-nominated cinematographer. He was first nominated for an Academy Award in cinematography in 1983 for the film "The Right Stuff," followed by "The Natural" in 1984 and "Fly Away Home" in 1996. Additionally, 2000's "The Patriot," 2004's "The Passion of Christ," and 2018's "Never Look Away" all netted him nominations. He is also a member of the National Film Preservation Board of the Library of Congress.

Sound of Freedom director Alejandro Monteverde is getting back in business with Utah-based Angel Studios for the release of his latest movie, Cabrini.
Angel Studios, which found box office gold with Sound of Freedom and prides itself on working outside of the Hollywood studio system, will release Cabrini in theaters on March 8, 2024. The drama portrays Francesca Cabrini, a poor Italian immigrant in New York City who overcame the odds to become a major entrepreneur in the 19th century.
“Francesca Cabrini is one of the most inspiring and influential figures in modern history, and yet few know her story. Faced with seemingly insurmountable life obstacles, Cabrini chose instead to focus on how she could change the status quo in her time, and her impact on the world is still felt today,” Liz Ellis, COO of Angel Studios, said in a statement on Tuesday.

Jim Caviezel stars as the real-life campaigner Tim Ballard in a dull film that has become a US box office sensation
This peculiar film features a notably wooden lead performance from Jim Caviezel, best known for playing Jesus in Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ. It has become a US box office sensation and an explosive campaign document, a phenomenon similar in its way to the once hugely popular viral video Kony 2012, which demanded the fugitive Ugandan cult leader Joseph Kony be arrested. Sound of Freedom is about child sex trafficking, based on the reminiscences of anti-trafficking activist and campaigner Tim Ballard, and stars Caviezel as Ballard, who quits his job at a toothless US government agency to rescue a young girl from a Colombian sex-trafficking cartel.
All decent people share a fundamental horror and outrage at child sexual abuse. But not everyone will share Caviezel’s QAnon-type...

The more things change, the more the Hollywood studios stay the same. At least that’s one of the surprising lessons of Barbenheimer, Sound of Freedom, Indiana Jones 5, Mission: Impossible 7, Fast and the Furious 10, and the other big-budget summer box office bets trying to help the movie business pull off a historic comeback.
Twenty years ago, we wrote a book, Open Wide, about a battle at the multiplex on the weekend of July 4, 2003, for the hearts, minds and dollars of the American public. In some respects, nothing has changed. The showdown that July weekend two decades ago pitted pink against black, and a sparkly self-actualized blonde heroine against a grim avatar of thermonuclear war.

Last week it had seemed that the reign of Barbenheimer was over when Jason Statham came in between the two, but like all things that are meant to be together, this week sees the duo return to their rightful spots at one and two on the charts. Of course number one is the juggernaut that is Barbie with an additional $33.7 million added to its massive $526.3 million domestic take and nearly $1.2 billion in worldwide grosses. Those numbers officially put Greta Gerwig at the top of the charts for highest grossing female director of all time, pretty good for only her third solo directing gig. I wonder if she will keep her streak alive at the Academy Awards where she has been nominated for both of her previous films, Director and Screenplay for 2017’s Lady Bird and Screenplay for 2019’s Little Women. I would put money on it right now that she does,...

“Barbenheimer” continues to rule the late summer box office as Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” earns its fourth No. 1 weekend with $33.7 million grossed, bringing its excellent domestic total to $526.3 million.
With another $48 million, “Barbie” will pass the domestic total of Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and become the highest grossing film of 2023 in North America.
Globally, “Barbie” has now reached $1.18 billion and passed the $1.12 billion global total of “Captain Marvel,” giving Greta Gerwig the record for the highest grossing film directed by a woman.
On the flip side, Universal’s period horror film “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” is sinking fast at the box office, opening to just $6.5 million from 2,715 locations.
Any legs for this $45 million film are unlikely, as “Demeter” has earned a middling B- on CinemaScore and Rotten Tomatoes scores of 49% critics and 74% audience. This will be the second vampire flop for Universal this year after the...
