Unlike the other Best Picture-nominated producers, who each have one film in a field of nine, Megan Ellison has two: American Hustle (directed by David O. Russell) and Her (directed by Spike Jonze). Both films have already hoarded numerous awards on the critics circuit, grossed a combined $200+ million worldwide, earned fifteen total Academy Award nominations, and both have a legitimate shot at winning the Best Picture prize–needless to say, it’s been a big year for Ellison. And what’s more interesting, perhaps, is that these are far and away the most eccentric films on the Best Picture ticket. This speaks, at least in part, to Megan Ellison’s producing style, which has raised a few eyebrows in Hollywood recently.

Great news, gay cinephiles! LogoTV snapped up a compelling catalog of gay movies and has made them available for free online streaming! (Sorry international folks, we only have U.S. distribution rights, so like so much else these days, these are geo-blocked.)
Now these are small indie films, so while they all have gay storylines and most feature cute male casts, not all of them are cinematic gems. But hey, on the whole they don’t suck!
Some of them are actually pretty good. In fact, we count five that made our reader ranked list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies: Eating Out 2 (#85), Adam & Steve (#79), Eating Out (#56), Boy Culture (#36) and Latter Days (#5).
In Latter Days a young and promiscuous gay man sets his sights on seducing his Mormon missionary neighbor. The resulting affair changes both their lives. The film stars Wes Ramsey and Steve Sandvoss and also has Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a supporting role.

As Aaliyah once sang, "Age ain't nothin but a number." Unfortunately, she was 13 and married to R. Kelly and had to get divorced, but not all May-December love stories are so tragic. With so much talk about age differences lately, whether its celebrity pairings or inane court cases, we thought we'd share our favorites.
Dorothy Snarker: Harold and Maude, which if you May youngsters out there haven't watched, you should for the Cat Stevens soundtrack alone. But mostly because Ruth Gordon is everything you've ever wanted to be when you grew up.
Bridget McManus: My vote goes to Tom Hanks and Elizabeth Perkins in Big. Although Hanks' Josh Baskin character is physically in an adult male body for most of the film let's not forget that he's just a 12-year-old boy wooing the 30-something New York businesswoman Susan.

As she arrives for the Oscars, the producer of The Master and Zero Dark Thirty is no longer the mystery she was
Photographers should be able to recognise Megan Ellison as she arrives at the Oscars this Sunday. Dark-haired and a young-looking 27, the producer of two of the year's most contentious films – The Master and Zero Dark Thirty – is no longer the mystery she was a couple of years ago. Yet the most powerful new force in Hollywood may still go unnoticed.
"She's incredibly self-effacing," says JoAnne Sellar, another of The Master's producers, who has worked with that film's director, Paul Thomas Anderson, throughout his career. "If you ran into her on set, you'd assume she was someone's Pa."
For an industry fond of tales of secretive billionaires with extravagant superpowers, there is something strangely fitting about the rise of Ellison, the daughter of software tycoon Larry Ellison, third wealthiest man in America.

Boarding schools seem to be a hotbed of sexual experimentation, at least that's how it seems from watching them on film. Interestingly, it's a trend that doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon. We've seen all-girls dormitories as a plot device since the 1930s, and yet there have been three released in the last year alone. Is it a coincidence that four out of eight of our Best Lesbian Boarding School Movies are directed and/or written by out women, two of which are said to be based on real life stories? Seems as if boarding schools might not be punishment as much as they are places to find your first love.

When a series of events leaves Madison suicidal and desperate, she locks herself away in her apartment for 30 days. Using a video camera to document herself like a visual journal, Madison vows that if she does not have the answer to her questions and feel more at peace with her life, she will kill herself on the 30th day. Elegant and charming supporting actor with more than 200 credits over a 70-year career
Kevin McCarthy, who has died aged 96, notched up more than 70 years as a working actor on stage and screen, with more than 200 film and TV credits. However mundane the material, it was usually enhanced by his lazy charm and natural elegance, his intriguing baritone voice and unconventional good looks – all attributes that might well have led him down the political path of his cousin, senator Eugene McCarthy. As it happened, he preferred to play politicians rather than be one.
He received his first screen credit in Laslo Benedek's version of Death of a Salesman (1951). McCarthy had previously played Biff, one of Willy Loman's disillusioned sons, in the London production of Arthur Miller's play, in 1949. By the time of the movie, he was a youthful-looking 37, with considerable stage experience. Resuming the role of Biff, he held...

Surreal and repressive, Mädchen in Uniform (1958) is the Technicolor remake of the dramatic — and downright shocking — 1931 German lesbian film of the same name. The story of a young woman who falls deeply in love with her teacher, it’s at once quaint and stirring.
Manuela (Romy Schneider) is the girl in question. It’s 1910, Prussia, and she’s just lost her mother. Her strict aunt brings her to a boarding school/convent to “learn discipline,” and the free-spirited youth immediately finds it a cold, unfriendly place. Run by the tyrannical Senior Superior, it's billed as the place where girls are turned into women who will be “fit to be soldiers’ mothers” – tough and ready for anything.
Discipline and suffering are the rules of the day. The kids are yelled at for the tiniest offense, physically disciplined, and given little love or affection by their cold fraeuleins (teachers). It's a direct commentary on the country's hard,...

Sexy and offbeat, Bloomington is a fantastic little drama from writer-director Fernanda Cardoso. Smartly playing with – and even subverting - the teacher-student lesbian romance, it's a refreshing treat in a summer swimming with overdone melodramas.
Sarah Stouffer plays Jacqueline, a child star that has grown up and decided to go to college in Bloomington. She navigates the hallways and quadrangles just fine, but comes across an uncomfortable student population who alternatively fawns over her, (as big fans of Neptune 26, her cult TV series) or cast disapproving looks at the pampered ex-star.
Jackie herself hates the attention. As a straight-edged girl with a solid head on her shoulders, she honestly wants to learn – and get away from her obnoxious mother. She quickly takes on two majors, (English Literature and Psychology, of course) and buckles down with a study group of uneasy buddies.
As it turns out, she's trying to escape from tragedy,...

In our first annual Top 50 Lesbian and Bi Characters poll, we asked you to vote for your favorite characters from film, television, and internet shows.
You cast your votes, and now we have the results. Before we reveal the winners, let's take a look at some of the trends that emerged.
Almost all of the characters were from films and television shows that made their debut after the year 2000. A few of the exceptions include Kerry Weaver from ER, and the ass-kicking ladies from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
While most of the characters were from Us productions, a fair amount came from international shows, including our top two characters (from the UK show Skins).
Also notable was the fact that some of your favorite characters, the leads from Xena: Warrior Princess (which ran from 1995-2001) and Idgie Threadgood from the film Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), were never officially presented as lesbian or bisexual.

As 2009 comes to a close, we take a look back at some of the people and events that made this the Best. Lesbian. Decade. Ever. in pop culture.
Luckily for all of us, there was far more information to have mentioned from the last ten years than we could have included in this brief survey. That's why our lists for each year are not intended to be exhaustive, but are instead snapshots of different memorable moments that included the representation of lesbians and bisexual women in film, television, music, literature, comics, sports and the Internet since the year 2000.

Katherine Brooks' name was in the air yesterday — or, well, it was in every single Hollywood trade. The much-adored director of Loving Annabelle has been attached to a biopic about female jockey Julie Krone for some time, and yesterday we found out that casting is finally underway. The film will begin shooting in Michigan and New York in April.
Julie Krone is the first female jockey to win a triple crown race (Belmont Stakes, 1993), and the only female jockey to ever appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. In 2000, she became the first woman to be inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame, and rightly so: Krone racked up 4,000 wins and $90 million in purse earnings during her illustrious career.
Katherine Brooks is not only directing the biopic, she's adapting the screenplay from Krone's autobiography, Riding For My Life, in which Krone says of herself: "As an athlete,...

Gravity Films has attached Katherine Brooks to direct "Freak," based on the life of jockey Julie Krone.
Brooks also adapted the screenplay from Krone's autobiography, "Riding for My Life," which details her history as the only woman to have won a Triple Crown race (the 1993 Belmont Stakes) and be inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Krone is the most successful female jockey of all time, with nearly four thousand career wins and over $90 million in purse earnings.
Gravity Films principal Sophie Watts will produce along with Brooks; John Manulis will executive produce. Shooting is scheduled to begin in April in New York and Michigan.
"Julie is a freak of nature, and although I admire her accomplishments in racing, it is her personal triumphs that drew me to the project," said Brooks. "I can't relate to winning a Triple Crown race, but I can relate to fighting for an impossible dream.

If you’ve been waiting anxiously to catch your first glimpse of repression, lust and Eva Green in an all-girls boarding school drama Cracks, wait no more. The first poster and trailer for the new film were released this week. While it looks gorgeous, the tagline certainly raises an eyebrow: “Innocence isn’t lost. It’s taken.” Uh-oh.
Eva stars as the popular, enigmatic Miss G, a teacher and diving coach at an elite English boarding school during the summer of 1934 who is adored by her students. Previous reports about the film has raised hopes a lesbian relationship, but the trailer suggests something more sinister.
The trailer brings to mind Picnic at Hanging Rock mixed with Loving Annabelle and a healthy dash of Heavenly Creatures and Lord of the Flies thrown in for good measure. So when Eva said that the story was “"little taboo” earlier, she really wasn’t kidding.

There is just something about boarding school that lends itself to tortured tales of verboten lesbian love. It started 75 years ago with Mädchen in Uniform, continued recently with Loving Annabelle, and will now carry on in the hands of Eva Green, with the fall release of Cracks.
"Cracks is a beautiful, dark, intense story, and it’s quite a brave film," Green told London's Daily Mail recently.
Eva Green arrives at the BAFTA Awards
Set in 1934, Cracks tells the story of Miss G (Eva Green), an unconventional, universally-loved teacher who shepherds a group of six teenage girls on their summer holiday. The clique's dynamic is thrown off-kilter when a beautiful and exotic Spanish student, Fiamma, arrives on campus.
The other girls are enamored with Fiamma, and spend days by the lake, listening to her recount stories of traveling the world with her father. Miss G, too, is taken with the new student,...

Ah, the first week of the new year. The holiday greetings and gay happy meetings have come to a close, and you're left with a full voicemail box, an overflowing inbox and the sense that the entire world is tilting left, which may indicate that you're still slightly hungover from New Year's Eve or that you have the beginnings of an inner ear infection. The only thing keeping you afloat as you trudge through the longest day of the work year is this: You know she loves you. And tonight, at 8 Et on the CW, Gossip Girl returns.
Because I love you too (though obviously not as much as Gossip Girl does), I've compiled all of the spoilers and speculation about the second half of Season 2 into one post. There are actual, legitimate, confirmed spoilers below. Read at your own risk!
