When The Office UK graced our screens, it left an indelible mark on the landscape of television comedy. Its sharp wit, uncomfortable silences, and unflinching portrayal of everyday office life made it a critical darling and a fan favorite. But what is the real reason behind its notably concise two-series run? Let’s explore the specific reasons that led to the show’s brief but impactful existence. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the creative minds behind The Office UK, were newcomers to television writing. This inexperience, paradoxically, became their strength. They brought a fresh perspective to the...

Ricky Gervais has made a personal brand out of being unabashedly indifferent to cancel culture, from his foul-mouthed stints as the host of the Golden Globes to his controversial Twitter rants. In keeping with that ethos, Gervais recently looked back on his two-season BBC sitcom “The Office,” which inspired the massive hit NBC series after airing from 2001 through 2003, in an interview with Times of London Radio to discuss how outrage mentality would’ve affected the program.
“I think now it would suffer because people take things literally,” he said of the mockumentary sitcom. “There’s these outrage mobs who take things out of context. This was a show about everything. It was about difference, it was about sex, race, all the things that people fear to even be discussed or talked about now in case they say the wrong thing and they’re ‘canceled,’” Gervais said.
He added, “And the...

To celebrate the release of horror slasher The Windmill Massacre on UK DVD, we’re giving one of our readers the chance to win a copy.
Nicely in time for Halloween, The Windmill Massacre is a fun and nostalgic throwback to edge-of-your-seat horror classics like Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street. It’s a good and gory Dutch treat, with a franchise-worthy villain in the form of The Miller, guaranteed to put viewers in a spin. This creepy, ghoulish nail-biter benefits not only from a top quality cast, headed up by the fantastic Noah Taylor (a regular in Game of Thrones and Peaky Blinders, and star of Simon Rumley’s horror favourite Red, White & Blue) and Patrick Baladi (David Brent’s dance off nemesis in The Office), but also a unique location (a splendidly spooky Dutch windmill) that offers nowhere to hide from the relentless killer.

Comic-Con attendees were the first to see footage from Warner Bros.’ upcoming DC venture Wonder Woman, which holds the lofty distinction of being the first modern superhero blockbuster to be toplined by a female protagonist, but that initial preview has long since been released online. And now, WB is going a step further by recutting the video for a strangely early extended TV spot (remember, the pic’s not out until next year).
What the clip lacks in fresh material it makes up for in momentum and slick execution – seeing the TV spot drives home what an effective first look the studio gave this movie, from the killer action money-shots to some entertaining banter between Amazonian princess Diana Prince and her love interest, downed pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine). While Arrow has steadily built a reliable audience over its first three seasons, every show that heads into a fourth year needs a bit of a shake up. It is a tried and tested strategy, and can be seen in many of the biggest dramatic successes of the modern era – including The X Files, ER, The Office, Friday Night Lights, Mad Men, and even Breaking Bad. These are shake ups that apply to both the structure and narrative of the show, and serve to refocus and redirect the overall plot. It is always interesting to see how a series team will approach these shake ups, and Arrow is no exception. What is clear now is that, for this show, the shake up will come in the form of Damien Darhk, played by actor Neal McDonough (Justified).

People Just Do Nothing returns to BBC Three tonight for a second run - one year on from its first full series, three years after its launch as an iPlayer 'Comedy Feed' pilot, and five years since its earliest outings on YouTube.
Devised by a group of friends, the sitcom / mockumentary was inspired by The Office, Spinal Tap and Curb Your Enthusiasm - but especially (and appropriately) by a BBC Three documentary series, Tower Block Dreams, which explored the underground music scene in UK council estates.
The early webisodes of People Just Do Nothing - following the deluded crew of pirate radio station Kurupt FM, led by Mc Grindah (Allan Mustafa) and DJ Beats (Hugo Chegwin) - were shot guerilla-style, with no budget and, for the most part, no scripts.
But these early amateur efforts generated a cult following and eventually attracted the attention of Roughcut TV's Ash Atalla, producer on The Office.

Apparently Martin Freeman is headed for total fandom domination. Imagine Benedict Cumberbatch saying that in his scariest, deepest, most intense Khan voice: Total. Fandom. Domination. Not only is he one-half of one of Tumblr's favorite ships and shows (talking about Sherlock, folks), but he's also the star of The Hobbit trilogy. Martin Freeman has joined the cast of "Captain America: Civil War." Freeman's one of those guys who sort of bubbled along for a while, recognizable from his work on "The Office," but hardly a household name, and then all of a sudden he went nuclear. Between "Sherlock" and the "Hobbit" movies, he has become far more recognizable and culturally omnipresent in the last five years, and I'm all for it. He turns in continuously great work in everything, and I love seeing him in something like last year's "Fargo," something I would have never expected to see him in. "Captain America: Civil War" fits into that category. In typical Marvel fashion, they are playing it close to the vest as to who he is playing. I'm having a hard time picturing him as a superhero, and I'm curious to see if this is a sizable role. There are so many...

Last weekend, The Hobbit star Martin Freeman hosted Saturday Night Live, and they created a hilarious parody video in which the actor revisits his roles of Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit and Tim Canterbury in the BBC's The Office.
The sketch is called "The Office: Middle Earth," and it starts out with a disappointed Bilbo telling us what he’s been doing the past few years, such as saving Middle Earth, being a hero, cashing in some treasure, and now the brave inspirational Hobbit is stuck working at a paper company with people he hates and driving a Jetta.
This was the best part of SNL last night and a perfect mashup of these two franchises. If you haven't seen the sketch yet, I hope you enjoy it!

Martin Freeman stans were treated with a memorable skit last night. The Saturday Night Live host reprised two of his most popular roles – The Hobbit’s Bilbo Baggins and The Office’s Tim Canterbury – for a hilarious crossover sketch, “The Office: Middle Earth.”
The skit takes place after the adventures in The Hobbit, as Bilbo — who turned down loads of treasure for saving Middle Earth claiming it was the noble thing to do – has now taken his talents to a paper company. The sketch hits home with many Office fans by capturing key elements of the show including employee on employee pranks, a goofy Gm, and office romances. It also features cameos from popular Hobbit characters such as Gandalf, Gollum, and Legolas who serve as Bilbo’s co-workers. It’s as funny as it sounds. Check out the full sketch above.
But why no Sherlock sketch?

It also features cameos from popular Hobbit characters such as Gandalf, Gollum, and Legolas who serve as Bilbo’s co-workers. It’s as funny as it sounds. Check out the full sketch above.
But why no Sherlock sketch?

Martin Freeman hosted Saturday Night Live last night and revisited two of his most beloved roles, Tim Canterbury in BBC.s The Office, and Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit. Watch the hilarious sketch as Bilbo Baggins takes on his most terrifying journey yet, a day at The Office. The sketch entitled, "The Office: Middle Earth" starts out with a disappointed Bilbo Baggins explaining what he.s been up to for the past few years, including saving Middle Earth, becoming a hero, cashing in some treasure, and now, after all he.s accomplished, he.s stuck working at a paper company and drives a Jetta. The look on Freeman.s face after that line says it all. He just bites his lip, looks side to side in that classic Tim Canterbury annoyed yet playful manner that we all came to love. The skit is the perfect mash-up between the two worlds.

Best known to American audiences as the star of Peter Jackson's Hobbit franchise and as "hey, that one guy!" from Love Actually, British actor Martin Freeman definitely had something to prove on last night's Saturday Night Live – mainly, of course, that he's funny. Freeman's background in comedy might not come across while he's traipsing around Middle-earth, but there was no arguing with his comedic chops once he took the stage for a funny and exceedingly well-timed monologue. If Freeman had the first-time jitters, they weren't apparent here, and the...

For anyone wondering what the heroes of The Hobbit got up to following the climax of the final film in the trilogy, it seems the answer has been provided.
A new Saturday Night Live sketch from last night's (December 13) show sees Martin Freeman returning to his roots in The Office, as Bilbo Baggins takes up an office job after saving Middle-earth.
He is joined by Gandalf, Gollum, Legolas and Tauriel in the office, and they are seen struggling with their new professional lives.
The video sees the Middle-earth characters don suits and ties, sip coffee and enjoy a typical office Christmas party, with Gandalf throwing some pretty sharp moves.
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is out now in UK cinemas and is released in the Us on December 17.

It was perhaps no surprise that this week's Saturday Night Live took aim at The Hobbit, since Martin Freeman hosted the episode. Freeman played a variety of characters throughout the episode, from a Kenny G-esque saxman to a clueless groom. But none of them compared to him combining his two iconic roles — Bilbo Baggins and The Office's Tim — in one sensational sketch. The cold open kicked things off with some jokes about torture, as Charlie Rose interviewed the two psychologists who devised the CIA's interrogation techniques. Rose claimed he was quite familiar with torture, since he's

There were lovely gifts and lumps of coal under the tree as Martin Freeman (Fargo, Sherlock, The Hobbit) took the reins of this week’s Saturday Night Live.
The episode started strong — with one of the better cold opens in recent memory (Taran Killam’s Charlie Rose interviewing the psychologists who helped the CIA with their brutal interrogation methods), a weird but occasionally amusing sketch featuring Freeman and Leslie Jones as a mismatched couple getting married after five days of dating (Kate McKinnon is just amazing), and then one of the best pop-culture mashups the show has produced in several...

Okay, so maybe this week's SNL won't be quite as exciting as it would be if a certain other Sherlock star were in the hot seat. Which isn't to say that Martin Freeman is anyone's second fiddle. From The Office to The Hobbit to Fargo to the parts of Sherlock when Benedict Cumberbatch isn't sucking up all the attention in the room, the man otherwise known as Dr. Watson has more than proven himself capable of holding his own onscreen. And even if his personal following isn't quite as fervent as the Cumberbitches are—though what fan clan is these days,...

What will Martin Freeman talk about during his Saturday Night Live monologue this weekend? The Hobbit, most likely. Old school The Office, if we’re lucky. But Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch? Don’t hold your breath.
Freeman had some choice words for his colleague who can’t help but make fans faint at his very sight. It might break your heart, or it might inspire some interesting Sherlock fan fiction. Check it out above.
Freeman’s not the only one who can be playful. Check out Cumberbatch’s cheekiest moments, in the gallery below.

BBC’s Sherlock is one of the biggest TV shows in the world. It dominated at this year’s Emmys, winning more awards than any other show, and boasts a fan following almost as obsessed with Sherlock as he is with solving crimes.
Despite only putting out three new episodes every couple of years (it looks like Series 4 won’t arrive until 2016) the show has had an incredible impact, with its stars propelled to stratospheric levels of fame; Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were cast in The Hobbit (as Bilbo and Smaug/the Necromancer respectively) purely off the back of their performances here, with Peter Jackson even adjusting the shooting schedule to accommodate them.
Today we’re going to look at twenty crazy things you probably didn’t know about the show, which may help, in some way, to fill the gap between now and the next time we...

When the original UK version of "The Office" concluded in 2003, it stood tall as one of the finest comedies ever made for TV. It was pitch perfect, utterly hilarious, completely relatable, and more emotionally complex than it might appear on the surface. The show made the careers of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, and become a huge export, not only launching the very successful Us version of the show, but also iterations in territories all around the world. However, Gervais couldn't resist revisiting David Brent. Last year, he revived his signature oafish office pest creation for a ten-minute short and music video, and now the character is going to the multiplex. BBC Films has announced that the David Brent movie, "Life On The Road," will go into production next year. Gervais will reprise his role as the sales manager, now working for a cleaning products company. However, Brent still dreams...

There’s a reason the BBC show Sherlock is so popular. Sure, it’s inventive and entertaining but, let’s face it, the show’s creators – Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffatt – got incredibly lucky when they landed stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman for the lead roles, just as they were both on the cusp of mega-stardom. Such fortunes undoubtedly give the show a huge ratings boost, but ultimately cause its biggest problem as well – at least in terms of putting together future seasons.
Soon after the three-episode first season of Sherlock aired in 2010, Cumberbatch was being snapped up for War Horse, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Fifth Estate and the re-booted Star Trek franchise. He is now a bona fide movie star – regularly appearing in awards-worthy fare, such as his 2013 double-whammy of August: Osage County and 12 Years A Slave. Cumberbatch also found time to join his Sherlock co-star on...

He talks to us about everything from the joys of swearing to Billy Bob Thorton's pathological fear of antiquities.Elsewhere, David Cross drops by to talk about the new film he wrote and directed, Hits, and we resist the temptation to grill him about Arrested Development, Mr. Show and The Increasingly Poor Decisions Of Todd Margaret. No-one does a Mrs. Featherbottom impersonation, we promise. In the non-interview portions of the podcast, the team talk about a trio of suspicious movie pitches currently gaining traction in Hollywood, and discuss the always enjoyable experience of spotting someone who is now famous playing a tiny part in an old movie. One name to get you started: Michael Shannon.

The last Almost Human of the season provides a fond farewell rather than any platform for the future...
This review contains spoilers.
1.13 Straw Man
The path to get through Almost Human season one has been far from smooth at times. It’s like they’d made Kennex’s artificial leg a little longer than the real one. This isn’t strange for a new series; the creative people behind the show try to judge what’s working, what’s not, and how best to move forward.
From the pilot it was obvious Almost Human had a major success with the combination of Karl Urban and Michael Ealy. It just gelled, and every scene they had together lit up the screen. The issue, and it didn’t really take long to emerge, is what to surround that strong character relationship with.
That’s what Straw Man massively underlined.
