The Case for Ann Dowd: Justin Theroux and Carrie Coon on Why the Lone ‘Leftovers’ Nominee Should Win
If Ann Dowd could have explained why “The Leftovers” was important three years ago, everyone within earshot would have been watching. But she didn’t know then. She had to live it first.
“Depending on the day, if someone asks me about Patti, I can’t get through the conversation,” Dowd said, in an interview with IndieWire. “You didn’t play those parts. You lived them.”
For three seasons, Dowd portrayed the confounding antagonist-turned-hero Patti Levin. She earned the series’ first and only Emmy nomination in 2017 (her second of the year, along with “The Handmaid’s Tale”).
“I think if you were to internally poll all of us — Justin, Carrie, [director and producer] Mimi [Leder], [music supervisor] Liza Richardson, the editors, and all the actors — and say, ‘The Leftovers’ is only going to get one nomination — and we’re taking [Outstanding Drama] Series off the table’ — I think everyone would’ve written down ‘Dowd,'” co-creator Damon Lindelof said.

It's been a few years since our favorite ragtag group of intergalactic misfits united to guard the galaxy and a lot has happened in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since then -- villainous robots and dimension-hopping sorcerers and superheroes who talk to ants. Thankfully, the second installment -- the "more unique, more daring" Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 -- picks up only a few months after Vol. 1, and you have this handy Q&A to answer any lingering Qs you may have before it hits theaters.
"Peter still has to deal with Rocket and he still has to deal with Drax and Gamora," Chris Pratt, aka Peter Quill aka the legendary outlaw, Star-Lord, said on the Atlanta, Georgia, set of Vol. 2. "There's still a lot of fun to be had there -- he certainly doesn't have a mastery on how to be a leader of this group. But I think he feels like the leader at the...

The third Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 trailer is out with new footage for us all to drool over until the film hits the big screen on May 5th, and it is awesome! This one gives us our best look at Kurt Russell, at least in his human form, playing Ego, the living planet. Check it out!
Great stuff!
Guardians of the Galaxy was a surprise hit for Marvel, and it became one of their highest grossing movies they ever made, and easily vaulted Chris Pratt, as Star-Lord, into one of the McU's top stars. It brought Dave Bautista into the household as a common industry name, it did wonders for Zoe Saldana, and elevated Michael Rooker to an even higher level after he gave us Merle Dixon from The Walking Dead. The movie was near perfect, and I have huge bias here simply because it is one of my all time favorite films.

Twenty-five miles outside Atlanta, down a nondescript rural road and past a security checkpoint where proper credentials, I assure you, are absolutely required, a spaceship has landed. The arches and flooring that make up the ship are pristinely white, like some sort of cosmic Apple store, and yellow-orange light glows from all directions, as if the whole thing had been dropped inside a lava lamp. Its passengers include a space outlaw wearing a shirt with a candy bar logo emblazoned on it, a blue-ish, tattooed alien meathead, a woman with green skin and another woman in skintight green spandex with antennae sprouting from her head, and Kurt Russell.
Russell affably welcomes three-fifths of the so-called Guardians of the Galaxy aboard his ship, a wide grin spreading across his scruffy face. The alien with the antennae, Mantis, looks on skeptically, however, as Peter Quill, Gamora and Drax survey the ship in wonder. Fleetwood Mac's "The...

It’s 149 days until Summer, but at least one massively popular digital media star already has plans. “Baby” Ariel Martin just announced she’ll serve as a counselor at Camp17, the self-proclaimed “one-of-a-kind camp experience” where “fans interact with their favorite digital personalities in a safe environment that nurtures authenticity, personal growth, and the creation of friendships and memories that last a lifetime.”

In case you didn’t notice last week, a number of categories had their ranks thinned out by the Academy. Well, in that regard, I’m here to help. Yes, AMPAS thinned the herd in Best Original Score, Best Original Song, and Best Foreign Language Feature. They also managed to include a handful of snubs, as always is the case. Those will be listed in just a moment, but definitely study these lists, as there are Oscar hints to be found within. For now though, these are just the remaining titles fighting it out for nominations. Take a look and be sure to see how it all impacts predictions going forward. Below you will see the 145 films in Original Score that are still eligible, the 91 tunes in Original Song, and the nine in Foreign Language Feature that remain in play. There were no real Song snubs, but notably Score has eliminated presumed nominee Arrival,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced the 145 scores eligible in the Best Original Score category, includeing work from “Jackie” and “La La Land.” The latter film, a musical directed by “Whiplash” helmer Damien Chazelle, picked up the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s award for Best Music earlier this month; “Jackie” was the category’s runner-up. Notably absent, meanwhile, are “Arrival” (which just landed a Golden Globe nod), “Manchester by the Sea” and “Silence.”

It’s “showtime, a-holes,” Chris Pratt says in the new trailer for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.” And yes, there is plenty of Baby Groot in this trailer too, but he is being a little mischievous and carries away something that Pratt’s character, Star-Lord, desperately needs. Fans became obsessed with Baby Groot after the first trailer debuted in October. Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Sean Gunn, Kurt Russell and Glenn Close will all star in the follow-up to the hit Marvel original, which premiered in August of 2014 and became a worldwide success.

Hello there, and what a week we're having. First, there's the news that Ghostbusters has probably been busted due to being a loss. Then, Ocean's 8 gets it's star-studded cast announced. While it's totally fine for a movie to be remade with a female cast, the cast for Ocean's 8 sounds like six degrees of Kevin Bacon. Since Hollywood doesn't seem to have new movie ideas for a female led movie, I've come up with a list of movies due for a remake.

It’s time to talk about remakes again and this week we’ve got one that makes you wish Hollywood would stop filming remakes. This is an example of a recurring problem in the film industry where they turn good, serious movies into bad comedies. This week, Cinelinx looks at the Stepford Wives. (2004)
The story was based on a novel by Ira Levin, who also wrote the chilling “Rosemary’s Baby”. When Levin’s novel “the Stepford Wives” came out in 1972, it was a best-seller because it touched upon the timely issue of women’s liberation and female empowerment that was such a hot-button subject of that era. The book took the idea of male resistance and nervousness about female equality and turned it into a fine horror story. The tale follows a family who moves to the town of Stepford. The wife, Joanna, makes friends with the other wives...

Everyone knows Woody Allen. At least, everyone thinks they know Woody Allen. His plumage is easily identifiable: horn-rimmed glasses, baggy suit, wispy hair, kvetching demeanor, ironic sense of humor, acute fear of death. As is his habitat: New York City, though recently he has flown as far afield as London, Barcelona, and Paris. His likes are well known: Bergman, Dostoevsky, New Orleans jazz. So too his dislikes: spiders, cars, nature, Wagner records, the entire city of Los Angeles. Whether or not these traits represent the true Allen, who’s to say? It is impossible to tell, with Allen, where cinema ends and life begins, an obfuscation he readily encourages. In the late nineteen-seventies, disillusioned with the comedic success he’d found making such films as Sleeper (1973), Love and Death (1975), and Annie Hall (1977), he turned for darker territory with Stardust Memories (1980), a film in which, none too surprisingly, he plays a...

Ghosts, ghouls, vampires, demons—they've been frightening kids for centuries, and with good reason. But children's brains are strange, malleable places that can perceive even the most unassuming figures—a cute, helpful Jedi Grand Master, a cuddly elephantine creature, a precocious baby dinosaur—as sinister agents of terror. Which brings us to today's Halloween-inspired PopWatch Confessional: What's the unintentionally scary thing that frightened you most when you were a kid? (Bonus: Reading through is a great way to stealthily learn how old we all are.) Ashley Fetters, online news editor: I was about eight when I saw the original...

20. The Godfather (1972)
Scene: The Horse Head
Video: http://youtu.be/VC1_tdnZq1A
It’s the sweeping epic that eventually spanned three films. But, without the sequels, the first still stands as one of the greatest cinematic achievements of all time. The Godfather is a crime drama, a family drama, and a warped version of the American dream. The story focuses on the Corleone family, beginning at the marriage of his daughter, an expansive reception that serves as a wonderful introduction to the characters we would grow to love. Part of this intro is to demonstrate how ruthless the family could be if called to. Vito (Marlon Brando) will grant requests on this day, as it is his daughter’s wedding day. One of those requests comes from Johnny Fontane (Al Martino), Vito’s godson and a professional singer. He wants to land a contested part in a film, so...

I generally pay as much attention to the broadcast network development season as I do to the baseball draft. Though the shows that actually survive development are much closer to airing chronologically than most baseball draftees are to the majors, the winnowing process is just as brutal in both cases. On average, a given network will hear 3-400 pitches a year, order scripts for 60-70 of them, make 8-12 pilots and put roughly between a half dozen and a dozen of them on the air. So I’ve usually found development not worth worrying about until shows are actually ordered to series and scheduled. That said, it’s been tough to ignore this fall’s development season, where it seems like every day for the past few weeks, my Twitter feed has blown up a few times an afternoon with news of a familiar movie or TV property being adapted...

The Ultimate Slumber Party
By Raymond Benson
There are certain films that capture the zeitgeist of an era, and The Big Chill is definitely one of them. If a movie like, say, Annie Hall, hits the nail on the head of urban relationships in the late 70s, then Chill embraces the Baby Boomers’ angst of adulthood in the early 80s—a time when the partying and discoing Carter years were undoubtedly over and we, in the USA, were solidly entrenched in Reagan’s world of hippies-turned-yuppies. The Big Chill is a love letter to the Baby Boomers, as it explores themes of regret over wasted opportunities, friendship and camaraderie, nostalgia, and the eternal question of what-happens-next.
Director and co-writer Kasdan, in a recent video interview (included as an extra on the disk), states that one of his influences for the picture was Jean Renoir’s 1939 classic, The Rules of the Game,...

Two decades before Neil Patrick Harris dared to don a golden pair of go-go boots to portray the "internationally ignored song stylist" know as Hedwig Schmidt, John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask were perfecting the act on the New York City drag scene. In the wake of Hedwig and the Angry Inch's latest theatrical incarnation — which just racked up eight Tony nominations — we caught up with several of the creative minds who have contributed to Hedwig's past, present, and future to create an (appropriately) oral history.

Here’s the thing about a pleasant, but unsurprising Oscars: It’s still pleasant! Unlike any other trophy telecast, the Oscars can actually coast on prestige and glamor during the dull moments. Charlize Theron can’t quite read the teleprompter? Whatever! Ellen DeGeneres is handing out pizza to celebrities like an evil, gluten-based “Candy Man” for too long? Fine! It doesn’t matter when I’m screaming, “Flawless Queen” every time Cate Blanchett appears onscreen and “She’S Not Going To Be Ignored, Meryl” when Glenn Close comes into view. Which was a lot. My throat hurts.
We came into the 86th Academy Awards panicking about the chances of our favorites. “Is Jennifer Lawrence‘s squawky performance in that horrifying puppet show American Hustle capable of winning over Lupita Nyong’o?” I gasped to myself. “Is Cate really a sure thing when Judi, Sandra, Amy, and Meryl are also towering totems of likability?...

Many of the races at Sunday (March 2) night's Academy Awards seem pre-determined as the ceremony is about to begin. Those guys from "My So-Called Life" and "True Detective" seem like locks. Etc. So how many times do we figure Jennifer Lawrence is going fall down on tonight's Oscars telecast. Five? 10? Twice that many if she wins? Actually, if she wins, Lupita Nyong'o fans are going to be tripping her. Not Lupita, though. She's too classy for that. 8:27 p.m. There are dozens of people in the HitFix office right now, but I'm hiding out in my office, because I'm dedicated to you, the readers. In a scene in 2000's "High Fidelity," Jack Black and Todd Louiso's record store clerk characters are coming up with a list of the top five songs about death. Black mentions "You Can't Always Get What You Want," but Louiso reminds him that the song was used in "The Big Chill." "Oh, God, you're right," says Black, and the song is disqualified.
That's how toxic "The Big Chill" was to popular culture -- so much so that even unassailable items that preceded it, like the Rolling Stones classic, were tainted by association.
It's true, of course, that "The Big Chill," released 30 years ago this month (on September 28, 1983), touched a huge raw nerve in the culture and became an enormous mainstream hit as a result. It's also true that it's a very enjoyable movie, full of witty and truthful moments in well-wrought performances by a stellar ensemble of then-rising stars.

Regardless of the abundance of male directors in horror, this genre pretty much belongs to the fairer sex. Think about it – how many time have we watched a film where the majority of men are drooling, sex obsessed morons who spend the best part of the story inebriated or getting violently disposed of by a maniac who often bears the Y chromosome? Whoever said women in horror were just limited to suffering and killing the big bad beastie at the end of yet another formulaic teenie kill flick, are clearly not looking hard enough but that said, the best of the female villains often miss out of the kudos they rightly deserve. This is our brief run-down of just a small gathering some of the greats . (Warning: Spoilers!)

Sunday night's big TV and film ceremony will feature – and hopefully reward – a dazzling array of female talent
It's Ladies Night this Sunday, and we're not talking about the Season 2 Premiere of Girls on HBO. NBC's 70th annual Golden Globes award show looks like giving us gals what we've badly missed in the Concert for Sandy Relief or the new Obama White House – a healthy representation.
Yes, we know what you're saying. Awards shows are filled with chicks. They're everywhere, scurrying over the red carpet in their shiny gowns and over-the-top jewels. But this time it's different, people. This year we're envying the brains more than the bodies.
Let's start with the fact that nominees Tina Fey (30 Rock) and Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) are co-hosting. Three cheers for those Baby Mamas for not being Ricky Gervais. They're two of our favorites and and if anyone let us give a speech,...

It’s Ladies’ Night at the Complex.
We’ve covered a pretty broad spectrum of shady characters over the past few months around here, but with Mother’s Day coming up in a few weeks, we felt it entirely appropriate to tip our collective hats to all the wonderful women that keep us under a thin layer of sweat. Presenting the ten meanest, craziest, and most scandalous chicks to ever set the screen on fire.
Alert: Spoilers abound.
10. Joan Crawford (Faye Dunaway, Mommie Dearest, 1981)
Mean broads aren’t all fictional. Believe it or not, there are real live firebreathing witches that walk the very terra firma upon which you stand. So tread lightly, my friend.
Joan Crawford’s reputation as a mean old bag was no secret in 1981 when Mommie Dearest hit the screen. However, it took Faye Dunaway channeling her maniacal soul to really get the message across to the movie-going public.

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.

When Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's American Horror Story premiered on FX two weeks ago, many of us wondered if the experiment in graphic and twisted terror could sustain itself after the frenetic and boundary-pushing first episode. And while the show has gradually eased off of some of the tricks and gimmicks it threw our way right out of the gate, I'm very pleased to say that three episodes in it is still every bit as creepy, weird, and alive. More alive than most of its characters, in fact - but we'll get to that in a minute.
Seriously - wow. This episode grounded the show like a fresh cement foundation under a gazebo, didn't it? We had the resolution of a few storylines, the beginnings of a few new ones, and the entwining of several seemingly disparate threads. But more than anything, it had an emotional depth that...

When it comes to actresses, the movie business has always had an eye for beautiful faces. Unfortunately, it has often only been an afterthought as to whether or not that beautiful face could do anything other than be beautiful. Leaf through the archives of any of the movie glamour magazines from long ago and you’ll find them a cemetery of beautiful faces primped and hyped by the Hollywood PR machine to be The Next Great Thing. Some never made it past a screen test, while others managed to survive a few screen roles, but through lack of talent, charisma, the right roles — whatever mysterious magic it is that causes a performer to click with an audience — soon disappeared, never to be heard of again. It’s a long, looong casualty list of forgotten pretties like Merrilyn Grix, Eleanor Counts, Kathy Marlowe, Myrna Dell, Sandra Giles, Jean Colleran, Sunnie O’Dea,...

If you're more interested in the typical fall slate of festival entrees than summer's glut of tentpole action fare, this is a great week. The Toronto International Film Festival announced the first wave of films that will play the fest in September. This is a batch of about 50 titles, which makes up only a small chunk of the programming. Usually Tiff features between two and three hundred films. But these are some of the highest-profile entries. Below you'll find rundowns on the new films from George Clooney, Bennett Miller, Jay & Mark Duplass, Todd Solondz, Francis Ford Coppola, Cameron Crowe, Sarah Polley, Fernando Meirelles, Lars von Trier, Marc Forster, Steve McQueen, Alexander Payne, and Lynne Ramsay. No announcement yet of the Midnight Madness programming choices, always some of my faves, but this is a great start. This is quite the list -- there are easily thirty films here that could be potential top ten for 2011 candidates,...
