John Cena as Peacemaker | DC Studios
What do these two have in common, you might wonder? A mutual loathing for characters like Aquaman is so intense that even in the heat of battle, they can’t resist a snide comment. And with the recent viral tweet showcasing Peacemaker’s quip about “fish f*ckers” followed by Homelander’s eager agreement, it’s clear that this special feature of the game isn’t just about the fists—it’s about the wits!

James Gunn has plans to bring the most ruthless assassin in the DC comics into his film universe. Gunn recently gave a hint that Slade Wilson aka Deathstroke will be a part of the Dcu. The supervillain is an archenemy of the Teen Titans and has also gone face-to-face with Batman and the entire Justice League. Gunn recently announced a Teen Titans project, which makes it even more convenient for a major Deathstroke appearance.

The character was an elite operative in the U.S. Army who gained enhanced physical and mental abilities from a super-soldier serum. Joe Manganiello portrayed the character in a brief appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League but further plans for the character went nowhere.

John Cena made his debut as Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker, in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, before going on to headline his own spin-off series. Peacemaker was a big success for Warner Bros./DC, and a second season is currently in production for the Max streaming service.
Gunn has already confirmed that Peacemaker season 2 will be set after the events of Superman Legacy, and that the movie will "have an impact" on the show. Does this mean we can expect to see Smith or some other Peacemaker characters appear in the Dcu Man of Steel reboot?
Cena was asked about the possibility of showing up in future Dcu projects during an appearance at Comicpalooza, and while he brilliantly evaded the question, his response did seem to suggest that he may know a little more than he's willing to divulge.

John Cena is one of the most respected and adored figures in Hollywood. He has made a name for himself through various pursuits, being successful as both an actor and a wrestler. He has become iconic in many ways and entered the fabric of popular culture. His acting roles have gained him a completely different type of audience, playing the role of The Peacemaker in the DC Universe, acting in Barbie, being a part of Argylle, and even adorning the skin of Dominic Toretto in the Fast and Furious series.
John Cena in The Peacemaker
Despite all these roles, he gets to star in an adaptation of a game. A recent update may change this as the actor might be getting a role in a highly anticipated adaptation of an iconic video game.

The Dcu has been slowly morphing into James Gunn’s vision, one project at a time. Although many questioned his authority as the co-ceo when it was initially announced, he has been proving himself to be worthy through his plan for the franchise. One could say that the filmmaker is being extensively deliberate with the projects he greenlights and those he doesn’t.
Viola Davis as Amanda Waller
The perfect example of this would be the hit series, Peacemaker. Where many would assume that the decision for a second season was an easy one for Gunn, with the success that the series saw, the truth is something entirely different.

By now, we know John Cena’s “Peacemaker” series is one of the few former Dceu projects going forward under James Gunn’s newly revamped DC Studios. Nearly all other relics of this era, Henry Cavill as Superman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, and Jason Momoa as Aquaman, are essentially canceled and very likely to be eventually rebooted. However, Gunn, the creator/writer/producer of “The Peacemaker” series, has recently revealed that the first season won’t be considered part of Dcu canon.

Do you really, do you really wanna taste it? Yes, we do! But where will that taste — that is, season two of Peacemaker — land in the DC Universe timeline? That was one of the biggest questions when it was announced that the Dcu would be replacing the Dceu. But James Gunn has stepped in to clear up any confusion…even if it still might be a little unclear just how it will all eventually come together.
James Gunn took to Threads — as he has grown quite fond of — to address where season two of Peacemaker sits in the evolving DC Universe, writing that it “will take place after the events in Superman.” It’s absolutely also worth noting that Gunn said that season one — which was released in 2022 and so part of the Dceu — is not canon in the Dcu. Got it? Good, moving on!

Joe Manganiello’s Slade Wilson / Deathstroke was supposed to make several appearances in the Dceu, including a standalone film with Gareth Evans at the helm. After fighting a long battle for the film, even amidst the DC restructuring, Manganiello is finally ready to say goodbye to Deathstroke, taking a little advice from his friend James Gunn.
Joe Manganiello in Zack Snyder’s Justice League
The character first appeared in the post-credits scene of the Justice League theatrical cut. However, his appearance was expanded a bit more in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Manganiello was also set to appear in Ben Affleck’s version of The Batman before Matt Reeves took over the project.

Prime Video’s big February drop is Mr. & Mrs. Smith! No, not the 2005 Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie action movie, but a new TV series kinda based on it starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. The set up for the show version? Glover and Erskine are two strangers who both get jobs at a shady spy agency and are asked to get married so that they can pretend to be a couple undercover, but things get more complicated when they start falling in love for real. Uh oh!
If you’re in the mood for a movie or two this month, you can also check out the Prime debuts of Strays, Bottoms, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. In the meantime, here’s everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Freevee this month. Amazon Originals are accompanied by an asterisk!

Danielle Brooks is definitely overjoyed at her Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for The Color Purple, after all the many, many years of hard graft she has put into her craft. However, she can’t help but wish the film had more nominations than just her own. On Tuesday morning, the nominations announcement came for Brooks and Brooks alone.
“I of course wish that my sister Fantasia [Barrino] could have had that moment as well, as our leading lady,” Brooks told Deadline after receiving the news. “She was phenomenal. But I’m grateful that I also get to share these moments with Colman [Domingo] for another movie [Rustin].

Searchlight Pictures vice president of national publicity Diana Loomis is leaving the studio after nearly 20 years, TheWrap has confirmed.
Loomis, who began at the studio back in 2006 (her first movie was “Little Miss Sunshine”) and previously served as head of the studio’s East Coast office, will leave at the end of the summer following her work on Searchlight titles “Flamin’ Hot,” “Theater Camp” and “Poor Things.” She will then launch a consulting operation specializing in theatrical and streaming releases, and awards campaigns for movie studios and streaming companies.
During her tenure at Searchlight, Loomis worked on the campaigns for five Best Picture Oscar winners – “Slumdog Millionaire,” “12 Years a Slave,” “Birdman,” “The Shape of Water” and “Nomadland.” Additionally, she worked on the rollout of more recent awards favorites like “The Banshees and Inisherin” and “Nightmare Alley.”

Paramount Picture and eOne’s “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” will be available to stream on Paramount+ on Tuesday, May 16. This comes 47 days after its March 31 domestic theatrical debut, continuing Paramount’s mostly-firm 45-day window — most movies arrive on home video on a Tuesday — between theatrical and streaming which began in July 2021 with “A Quiet Place Part II.” The film has been available to rent on PVOD for $20 or buy digitally for $25 since May 2, with a DVD, Blu-ray and 4K release arriving May 30.
The film received solid reviews and excellent word of mouth, but the $150 million franchise starter barely topped $205 million worldwide in theatrical earnings. The Dungeons and Dragons brand was a prime example of “IP for the sake of IP.” None of its admittedly impressive cast qualified as a butts-in-seats draw. Moreover, the film was initially slated for March 10 before being moved to March 31.

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
It happens every so often: two Hollywood movies come out around the same time, with a shockingly similar premise. There was "Top Gun" and "Iron Eagle" in 1986, "Dante's Peak" and "Volcano" in 1997, and in more recent times, "Hercules" and "The Legend of Hercules" in 2014. But the most infamous of these twin films battles took place in the summer of '98, when "Deep Impact" went up against "Armageddon" as the two asteroid disaster flicks battled it out for box office supremacy. Ultimately, Michael Bay's "Armageddon" came out on top.
It's not as though director Mimi Leder's "Deep Impact" was a failure — in fact, by many metrics, it was a gigantic success. It's just that it wasn't quite as big as Bay's bombastic spectacle starring Bruce Willis,...

Had Warner Bros. given Joel Schumacher an extra year to develop and shoot "Batman & Robin," it's reasonable to expect that he would've turned around another agreeably campy lark on par with "Batman Forever;" ergo, from the fans' perspective, it's probably a blessing that the studio rushed him from 1996's "A Time to Kill" straight into his second Dark Knight yarn. Had Schumacher been granted more time to refine the film with screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, he might've stuck with the franchise — which, spinning this alternate timeline forward, could've knocked George Clooney out of Steven Soderbergh's "Out of Sight" and obviated the need for Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins." A series-hobbling Bat-bomb is a more than acceptable tradeoff here.
There were, however, certain elements of "Batman & Robin" that were always going to fall flat, most notably the casting of Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze. Had Warner Bros. been smart...

The dreaded post-merger Warner Bros Discovery layoffs have reached the programming operation overseen by HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys.
Overall, 14 of staff — about 70 people — are being laid off Monday, the vast majority of them on the Max side. That includes in Max Non-Fiction Originals, International, Acquisitions, Casting and previously reported Live-Action Family Originals, which are all being either scaled back significantly or essentially eliminated, leading to the departure of the bulk of the the staffs, led by Jennifer O’Connell EVP, Non-Fiction & Live-Action Family Originals for HBO Max; Jennifer Kim, SVP, International Originals for HBO Max; Michael Quigley, EVP of Content Acquisitions at HBO Max; and Linda Lowy, EVP Casting for WarnerMedia’s HBO Max, TNT, TBS and truTV.
I hear the layoffs are being done via video conferences this morning. The cuts are part of Wbd leadership’s pledge to find at least 3 billion in savings.

Warner Bros. Discovery is not going to say how many HBO and HBO Max customers it has.
In the second quarter, the media conglomerate said HBO Max, HBO and Discovery+ subscribers combined were 92.1 million, up 1.7 million from 90.4 million the prior quarter. That’s up 22 75.8 million on a pro-forma basis versus a year earlier.
However, Wbd’s streaming businesses lost subscribers domestically in Q2, dropping 300,000 — falling from 53.3 million in the first quarter to 53.0 million as of June 30 in the U.S. and Canada.
For Q1, AT&T — the prior owner of WarnerMedia and HBO Max — had reported 76.8 million total HBO and HBO Max subscribers worldwide, including 48.6 million domestically. Meanwhile, Discovery reported 24 million direct-to-consumer subscribers in Q1. That adds up to 100.8 million — so what accounts for the discrepancy with the first-quarter pro-forma total Wbd reported? The company restated HBO Max subscribers to count third-party distribution deals only if the individual user has activated...

Since David Zaslav took over as CEO of the new Warner Bros. Discovery mega-company last week, there are already talks of shaking up one of Warner Bros.’ most profitable franchises: DC comic book projects.
The 43 billion buyout of WarnerMedia by Discovery has led to numerous executive shakeups, and top leadership reportedly has been discussing new ways to modernize the DC universe.
Longtime Discovery boss Zaslav allegedly is looking to hire a “creative and strategic czar similar to what Marvel has in Kevin Feige,” a source told Variety.
Prior to the merger closing, Zaslav reportedly vetted candidates with experience in “nurturing blockbuster intellectual property” in an effort to hire someone who has a robust business background capable of helming different factions at DC for a “more harmonious” approach.
Discovery insiders also told the outlet that while DC has found box office success with Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” and Jason Momoa-led solo feature “Aquaman,...

This article contains light spoilers for Peacemaker through episode 6.
Peacemaker is not an easy character to upstage.
The DC comic antihero has everything one is looking for in a leading man. His appearance is effortlessly iconic – featuring a tight red shirt adorned with a dove of peace logo and a metal helmet shiny enough to make Magneto jealous. His credo is simple: he will have peace, no matter how many men, women, and children he has to kill to get it.
When you combine the natural appeal of Peacemaker as a character with the absurd likeability and acute talents of the actor playing him in John Cena, you have the formula for a game-changing hero. The Suicide Squad director James Gunn certainly thought so as Peacemaker was the character he chose to lead the first TV spinoff of the 2021 DC film.

Opening credits sequences began as a functional part of film and television. They existed simply to let the audience know the title of the thing that they were watching and the creatives involved with it such as the production company, the writer, the director, and the main stars. However, as time went on, they would evolve to set the tone for the movie or the show they were preceding. There are even some opening credits that have become just as iconic as the characters or the shows themselves.

A man of formidable ego, Samuel Goldwyn once confided that, while he’d basically invented Hollywood, he disliked the word “movie.” It sounded “dopey and made-up,” he told me.
I wonder what he would think about the word “streamer.” Dictionaries still describe “streamer” as a strip of material, but the word defines Hollywood today, just as “movie” once did. It’s a streamer town, and it’s now Steven Spielberg who’s been positioned to help drive the action.
Last week when Netflix revealed its new mega-deal with Spielberg, the town’s dealmakers (including rivals) agreed it was a “natural.” The filmmaker who gave us Schindler’s List and Jaws would help fulfill Netflix’s voracious appetite for content. Any content. After all, Spielberg had done it all before – that is, before streamers even happened.

Warner Bros. has debuted a brand new trailer for James Gunn’s part sequel/ part reboot of ‘The Suicide Squad’.
Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X.
Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favourite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.
Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement.

A new trailer for DC and Warner Bros.’ “The Suicide Squad” has been unleashed. Directed by James Gunn, the film is a standalone sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 DC Extended Universe entry “Suicide Squad.” Check out the new footage below.
“The Suicide Squad,” like all of Warner Bros.’ 2021 titles, will debut day and date in whatever theaters are open later this summer and on HBO Max for 31 days. The release date is currently set for August 6, 2021. It’s a strategy that’s been paying off for Warner Bros. (mostly), thanks to films like “Godzilla vs. Kong,” which has topped $100 million in the U.S. even after playing on the Warner streaming platform.
Director James Gunn has long billed his version of “The Suicide Squad” as a gritty, 1970s war movie with comedic sensibilities. He also wrote the movie based on the comic book characters created by John Ostrander.

The latest trailer for director James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” is here, after seemingly leaking online early.
An unlisted YouTube video with the new trailer circulated online with the title “The Suicide Squad – Early Access Trailer Do Not Share.” Intentional or not, Gunn tweeted that some of the cast members released the trailer online earlier than expected. Warner Bros.’ Brazilian and Canadian Twitter accounts even joined in on the fun.
It seems like Margot, Jai, @TheSlyStallone @JohnCena @idriselba @flula @MelchiorDaniela @NathanFillion @MelchiorDaniela @dastmalchian @AliceBraga @cosio_joaquin and that Sob @joelkinnaman have already done that earlier than expected. How dare they. #TheSuicideSquad https://t.co/dMfUuiQctc

The movie sees the squad being recruited by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) on a mission to destroy a Nazi-era prison and laboratory. Along the way, they run into some massive obstacles — including Starro, the telepathic, skyscraper-tall starfish.

"Peacemaker" is the new 8-episode, live-action superhero TV series, based on the Charlton Comics character and the upcoming feature "The Suicide Squad" (2021), starring John Cena, Steve Agee, Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, Jennifer Holland, Chris Conrad and Chukwudi Iwuji, streaming January 2022 on HBO Max:
"...'The Peacemaker' debuted in Charlton Comics' 'Fightin' 5" #40 (1966), created by Joe Gill and Pat Boyette, following 'Christopher Smith', a man who loves peace so much he is willing to fight for it.
"He used an array of special non-lethal weapons, and also founded the 'Pax Institute' to go up against dictators and warlords.
"Smith later learns his peace-through-violence efforts were the result of a serious mental illness brought on by the shame of having a killer father, who was a vicious officer in The Third Reich during the war.
"He believes his father's spirit haunts him continually, criticizing his every move, even as he tries to live down his past.

Filmmaker James Gunn reported on Twitter that the first red band trailer for his upcoming The Suicide Squad movie hit a first-week record with over 150M views.
That number beats the 116M first-week views of New Line’s Mortal Kombat, which recently held the record as the most-watched red band trailer.
At the time of The Suicide Squad trailer drop on March 26, Warner Bros. hadn’t received an official rating for the follow-up to the 2016 movie, but it’s been made clear today that the DC film will be what is arguably the comic book cinema series’ fourth title to receive an R-rating after Watchmen, Joker, Zack Snyder’s Justice League and the extended DVD cut of Batman v. Superman (which had a PG-13 theatrical release).

Chinese helmer Xu Lei will return to the subject of rural life in northern China for his second feature “The Peacemaker,” one of the 20 narrative film projects selected to participate in the Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum this year.
Xu’s suspenseful and darkly humorous first film “Summer Detective,” which he wrote and directed, was nominated for best feature and won the prize for best script at the 2019 First International Film Festival, which focuses on emerging talent. The Beijing Culture-backed title grossed $1.45 million (RMB9.44 million) in theaters.
In this next feature, he returns to the region around his hometown in Hengshui, Heibei province to explore the phenomenon of village residents who take it upon themselves to become “peacemakers,” of sorts — unofficial deputies for the resolution of local disputes outside the formal legal system.
“Although I come from the countryside, I’ve realized that I really have no understanding of the place,...

This Wynonna Earp review contains spoilers.
Wynonna Earp Season 4, Episode 8
Oh, to be a fly on the (probably Zoom) wall of the Wynona Earp writers’ room during the brainstorm session about which Halloween costumes each character should wear in this autumnal holiday-themed installment! Reader, they nailed it. Wynonna dresses as feminist hero Britney Spears (compliment of Waverly for both bringing the costume together and knowing that Wynonna would be into it), and Wonder Woman. Doc is bisexual icon Freddie Mercury. And Waverly… well, Waverly is a ladybug and then an angel. It’s all beyond perfect, and epitomizes just how much fun this slasher episode of Wynonna Earp truly is. Two episodes, and Wynonna Earp Season 4B continues to be… just an incredibly good time? There is a time and place for Important Television, and Wynonna Earp sometimes ducks into that intersection, but I don’t think we talk enough...
