When "The Simpsons" debuted on December 17, 1989, it was an instant sensation. Matt Groening's bizarre, weirdly proportioned yellow people felt like a dark antidote to the corny TV Americana that had persisted through Reagan's America, and the show's popularity proved that audiences were ready for a change. Plus, it was incredibly novel to have an animated sitcom in primetime, leading many curious souls to tune in ... and instantly become hooked. Many years later, celebrities would be fighting tooth-and-nail to gain a coveted guest spot on "The Simpsons," either playing themselves or playing a character.
A fun piece of trivia: the first celebrity to guest-star in an episode of "The Simpsons" was Albert Brooks (no relation to show producer James L.). Albert Brooks played a character named Cowboy Bob in the 1990 episode "The Call of the Simpsons." Cowboy Bob was very eager to sell an Rv to the status-seeking Simpson family.

The junior senator, whose name is the latest to bubble up among People's Gop sources monitoring the Trump 'veepstakes,' isn't a "mama grizzly" or a hockey mom, but he just might be the latest representative of Alaska to enter the presidential race, following fellow Alaskan Sarah Palin. As the veepstakes continue - Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst has met with Trump, as well as Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, and Arkansas Sen. Our Us chums caught the Supergirl pilot at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. Here's a spoiler-free review...
Rest easy, DC Comics fans. The first episode of Supergirl packs enough DC Comics mythology into its 45 minutes to satisfy fans of Kara or her more famous cousin. Fans of The Flash and Arrow will instantly recognise the formula that has made both of those shows so successful, and there's no larger continuity barring entry for new fans.
Without spoiling a thing that you haven't already seen in the promotional materials for the show, Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) is Superman's cousin from Krypton, hiding her powers and living an ordinary life in Capital City as an awkward assistant to a powerful media mogul (Calista Flockhart). Circumstances force her to use her powers in public, she creates her new public identity, and goes forth to fight a powerful alien menace who has also ended up here.

"Keep Austin Weird" isn't just a catch phrase created by some offbeat tourist marketing campaign, but rather a mantra that emulates the quickly diminishing quirkiness that drew me to Austin from the big city of Houston, Texas in 1993. The cast of characters often encountered in the local scene, whether on the Drag or downtown, contributed to the charm and allure of the Capital City.

On Thursday (August 21) morning at 10 a.m. Et, Fxx is going to begin its Every Simpsons Ever Marathon, a showcase for 552 episodes of "The Simpsons," plus "The Simpsons Movie." That's a lot of episodes and if you're a "Simpsons" neophyte, you may be intimidated by the sheer avalanche of yellow-tinged animation. Fortunately, we're here to help. The individual fans on Team HitFix are weighing in on one or two episodes per day until even we may collapse under the avalanche of comedic greatness. And, since we know that nobody can watch 48 episodes per day and remain sane, we'll also recommend an episode or two that you might be able to skip each day if you need to shower, take a quick nap or show love to members of your family. Check out our recommendations and chime in with your own favorites... Day One of the marathon begins with "Simpsons Roasting...

One of my favorite things about watching Game of Thrones is getting to watch "Gay of Thrones" — Funny or Die's video recaps starring hairstylist Jonathan Van Ness (a real-life stylist at Stile Salon in Brentwood, California) — afterwards. In every episode, he recaps the show for a different client, including Alfie Allen, a.k.a. Theon, and most recently, celebrity fashion stylist Brad Goreski. This is Westeros translated into a gay kiki argot, with entertaining digressions into Nancy Kerrigan versus Tonya Harding and Whitney Houston anthems. You don't have to be gay (or even a GoT fan) to get into this. Best of all are the names he gives to each character, which are uncannily dead on, often offensive, and ridiculously funny. There is Jamie Lannister as "Brother D" (short for Brother Daddy), Shae as "Capital City Celine," and Ygritte as "that beautiful ginger bitch from Downton Abbey." Herewith is the...

Ready, Set, Fund is a column about crowdfunding and related fundraising endeavors for Austin and Texas independent film projects.
Local non-profit Cinema Du Cannes Project was created to empower "at risk" teenagers in Austin by involving them in the art of cinematic digital storytelling and digital media production. Youth-led teams produce films for submission into film festivals across the nation and world, including the Cannes Film Festival Court Metrage. In addition, participants learn valuable skills and support the community by producing public service announcements and videos for other local non-profits.
This summer the organization is producing a documentary, 40 Years - On the Air, which is currently funding on Kickstarter through August 4. This hour-long documentary features local media icon David Anderson -- seen above in an archive photo-- whose radio broadcast career has spanned over 40 years.

After a fairly enjoyable half-hour last week, this week's installment of The Simpsons tries too hard to use nostalgia for entertainment.
"Whiskey Business" makes references to several classic episodes of the past, but still fails to endear itself to the audience. That's probably because there's just waaay too much happening.
Moe's depression isn't a new thread to the series, but this week we see him attempt and fail at suicide. His sad sack schtick has always been a part of the show, but now nothing seems to be making him feel better about his life. So his loyal customers and Marge decide to whisk him away to ... Capital City?!?
The choice seemed unusual as did the fact that something as simple as a new suit could cheer up Moe, but it gave the episode a chance to trot out the Tony Bennett "Capital City" song, so that's good, right? From there,...

The Capital City Event Center was abuzz last Wednesday night with Austin Film Festival's Conversation in Film with Brian Helgeland, writer and director of 42, which hit theaters two days after the event. Moderated by Aff Executive Director Barbara Morgan, the conversation focused on Helgeland's career as a writer. I'll admit I'd seen many films Helgeland wrote but never realized he was the man behind the curtain.
Helgeland opened the conversation by letting the audience know he started his career by writing horror movies, his most notable (in his opinion) being 976-evil. It was through horror films that he began to get involved with other writers, eventually working on some television series episodes as well.
The screenwriter then jumped into the process of adapting L.A. Confidential, which I was astounded to hear took three whole years to write. His biggest challenge was trying to transform a 496-page book into a two-hour film,...

Today ended our three-week Sitcom Smackdown to determine the best sitcom of the past 30 years, and The Simpsons emerged as the ultimate champion. And what better way to celebrate this victory than through song? Check out their selections, with commentary from showrunner Al Jean. Prepare to be rocked, Dr. Zaius–style. 10. “Capital City” from season two's “Dancin' Homer.” In this song by Jeff Martin and Alf Clausen, Tony Bennett extols the virtues of Springfield’s state capital, which includes the crosstown bridge, the Penny Loafer, and 4th Street and D. The song helped Tony Bennett reach a younger audience, but did nothing to help The Simpsons reach an older audience. [Co-creator] Sam Simon reached out to Bennett. Today marks the release of "The Man With the Iron Fists," written and directed by RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan. Produced by Eli Roth, the film stars a number of big name actors including the likes of Russell Crowe, Lucy Liu, and even RZA himself. Taking place in nineteenth century China, a group of warriors and assassins must band together in order to protect their community.
For Marvel fans, however, the words "Iron Fist" trigger thoughts of a different man: Daniel Rand, one of the greatest martial artists in the entire Marvel universe. Drawing his power from a dragon named Shou-Lao the undying, Iron Fist has since forged himself into a living weapon. Kind of like RZA in "The Man With the Iron Fists," in fact!

Since its first reference in Batman #4 in 1940, Gotham City has been a primary part of the Batman mythology. Frank Miller has referred to Gotham City as New York City after dark, which makes sense considering that Gotham had already been a well-known nickname for the city before Batman's creation.
"Originally I was going to call Gotham City 'Civic City,'" said writer Bill Finger in 1970's The Steranko History of Comics. "Then I tried 'Capital City', then 'Coast City'. Then I flipped through the New York City phone book and spotted the name 'Gotham Jewelers' and said, 'That's it,' Gotham City. We didn't call it New York because we wanted anybody in any city to identify with it."
Despite Gotham City's obvious parallels to New York City, Bruce Wayne's home has also taken elements from Boston, Cincinnati, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Toronto, Vancouver, London and Chicago.
