It’s the final month of the year, which means much of our attention will be turned to sharing various best-of-2023 rundowns throughout December. The month also brings many of the year’s most noteworthy films, which we’ve rounded up before––some of which will be opening in a more limited capacity and expanding next month.
We should also note some top November picks like The Boy and the Heron and May December are finally getting in front of wider audiences, with the former getting a wide release on December 8 and the latter arriving on Netflix this Friday. For this round-up we’re also not including films getting limited one-week-only runs this month, such as Noora Niasari’s Shayda on December 1 and Ava DuVernay’s Origin and Alice Rohrwacher’s La Chimera on December 8.

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

There are many stories about Jean-Luc Godard in Cannes, like the year he helped to shut it down (1968) because of the civil unrest that was sweeping France at the time. Then there was the time when (in 1985) he was ambushed in the Palais by a Belgian anarchist and hit in the face with a custard pie after the premiere of Détective. And, as recently as 2018, there was the time he conducted a press conference for his film The Image Book via FaceTime from Switzerland, making journalists line up to speak into a mobile phone.
But the story that endures the most is the time in 1985 he signed a contract on a napkin with Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, CEOs of The Cannon Group, whose big hits that year were Invasion U.S.A., starring Chuck Norris, and Death Wish 3, with Charles Bronson. Godard — who died last year at age...

As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.
Though it’s not quite as vast or expensive as fellow Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Citadel (premiering April 28) is a massive, massive undertaking. Starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this spy series is described as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.” This means that the Russo Brothers-produced project will eventually feature several spinoffs in multiple countries and languages around the world. Neat-o!

Prime Video is hoping to launch its own extended franchise universe in April with the premiere of international spy series “Citadel” from the minds of the Russo Brothers. The show stars Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra, and Stanley Tucci, and is intended to be the first block of an interconnected story with different spinoffs in countries and regions around the world. The first version will begin streaming on April 28. In the show, the world is in the grips of Manticore, a criminal organization, and several former spies are recruited to restore order despite having their memories erased.
Watch the trailer for “Citadel”:
Beloved young adult author Judy Blume opened the door to discussion about difficult subjects for generations of kids. Now, the writer is the subject of a new documentary, “Judy Blume Forever,” coming to Prime Video on April 21. The doc looks at her trajectory — from a scared kid to...

In many successful film franchises, there may be said to be an unspoken "rule of threequels." This rule dictates that the third film in a series is where things begin to unravel. The thinking goes as follows: A film is a hit, establishing a new character or world into cinema. The sequel, banking on the success of the first, will be larger, more exciting, and is often more ambitious. By the third film, however, the filmmakers -- in an effort to outdo film #2 -- either have to ratchet the action up to a near-intolerable levels, or take the action in a "new direction," often with disastrous results. One can see this dynamic at play in "Alien³," "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," "Return of the Jedi," "Death Wish 3," "X-Men: The Last Stand," "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift," "Spider-Man 3," "RoboCop 3," and "Halloween III: Season of the Witch.

Gavan O’Herlihy, best known for playing Richie and Joanie Cunningham’s disappearing brother Chuck on “Happy Days,” has died. He was 70.
O’Herlihy died in Bath, England on Sept. 15, his brother, Cormac O’Herlihy, confirmed to Variety. A cause of death was not disclosed, but his brother confirmed that it was not Covid-19.
After making an appearance on an episode of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” in 1973, O’Herlihy broke out on “Happy Days” as Chuck, the eldest Cunningham sibling. Chuck was a high school jock and was almost always seen carrying a basketball. He was played by three different actors — Ric Carrott in the show’s pilot, O’Herlihy for the first two seasons and Randolph Roberts for two episodes in Season 2 — giving way to the pejorative “Chuck Cunningham syndrome” to describe TV characters who disappeared from shows and were later written off as if they never existed.

Perez’s latest film features Charles Bronson doppelganger Robert Bronzi (here billed as Robert Kovacs), who previously appeared in another Rene Perez film From Hell to the Wild West, as a vigilante with a mysterious past who goes to a crime-infested city and takes the law into his own hands, trying to rid the city of crime whilst at the same time protecting a young mother and her child.

Ever since the trailer for Titans‘ season finale hit the web late last week, it’s deservedly been the talk of the town. After all, who wouldn’t go bananas after seeing Batman finally losing it and kicking the crap out of anything in his path? No matter if you reacted positively or negatively, it got your attention.
So, if you placed your bet on Scarecrow’s fear toxin or Poison Ivy’s pheromones influencing the Dark Knight’s behavior, now is the time to say you were dead wrong. As it turned out, the synopsis for “Dick Grayson” pretty much gave away what was going on, but let’s start from the beginning and recap what was a tremendous episode, shall we?
Funny enough, we begin with Dick living the sweet life in California. He’s now married to Dawn, with one child running around the house and a baby on the way.

Paul Kersey never set out to be a hero. Following his 1974 debut, in the successful though explosively provocative first film of the Death Wish series, and after a string of four widely-lambasted sequels and an even more derided remake, many think he never should have been. As played by Charles Bronson across the five preliminary features, and by Bruce Willis in the newest incarnation, this character, an initially middling and mild-mannered architect (surgeon in the remake), is routinely, mostly unwittingly, thrust into a world of incessant, brutal violence. His quest for revenge is at first a primal and fathomable reaction to an assault on his wife and daughter (the former dies as a result, the latter is left in a catatonic/comatose state), but growing ever more convoluted and pitiless, his subsequent forays into vigilante justice attain varying degrees of clichéd, cartoonish excess. No longer was his target an almost...

The year is 1974 a former military man whose family is taken from him turns vigilante to hunt the people responsible for taking his wife and child from him. I’m not talking about Frank Castle, The Punisher (who made his first appearance Feb of that year), but I am talking about character Paul Kersey who is the main character of the film series Death Wish. Today is 2018 and the vigilante is being rebooted for big screen once more. Let’s check out the 2nd trailer (and poster) for the movie below:
In this reimagining of the 1974 revenge thriller Death Wish. Dr. Paul Kersey (Bruce Willis) is a surgeon who only sees the aftermath of his city's violence when it is rushed into his ER - until his wife (Elisabeth Shue) and college-age daughter (Camila Morrone) are viciously attacked in their suburban home. It’s certainly been a year to remember if you’re a fan of The Punisher, now hasn’t it? In addition to winning over True Believers with the new Netflix series starring Jon Bernthal, Frank Castle has found yet another way to turn heads on the comic book side of things.
As you may recall, James Rhodes unfortunately met his end during the events of Civil War II. But, as it turns out, his War Machine armor didn’t go to waste because – get this – Castle picked up where Iron Man’s best buddy left off. That’s right, the deadliest mech suit around has fallen into the most dangerous hands possible.
Originally, I scoffed at this idea because I like seeing Castle as more of a stripped down vigilante who can easily exist outside of the Marvel Universe – and often has in his feature films. But when I really thought about it,...

Actor Bruce Willis, will star in a remake of "Death Wish", to be directed by Aharon Keshales & Navot Papushado, rebooting director Michael Winner's 1974 vigilante action feature:
The original Paramount Pictures thriller was loosely based on the novel "Death Wish" by author Brian Garfield, following former WWII and Korean war vet, 'Paul Kersey'.
Kersey, a 'liberal' thinking architect, becomes an unstoppable late-night vigilante killer, targeting muggers, after a deadly assault against his wife and daughter pushes him over the deep end.
At the time of its initial release, critics were displeased with the film, considering it an 'immoral threat to society' and an encouragement of 'antisocial behavior'.
Despite the negative reviews, producers sensed the 'primal' appeal of the premise with audiences and released five "Death Wish" films.

Titles include "Death Wish II" (1982), "Death Wish 3" (1985), "Death Wish 4: The Crackdown" (1987) and "Death Wish V: The Face of Death...

1985 was the year of Back To The Future, Rocky IV and Rambo II. But what about these 20 movies, that also deserve a fair share of love?
Thirty years ago, Marty McFly was riding high with the smash hit Back To The Future, while Sylvester Stallone enjoyed his most successful year yet with the one-two punch of Rambo: First Blood Part II and Rocky IV. It was an era of family sci-fi and teen comedies and bullet-spraying action, where The Breakfast Club and Teen Wolf rubbed shoulders with Death Wish 3 and Commando. Then there were low-key dramas like Out Of Africa and The Color Purple, which were both awards magnets at the Oscars.
Away from all those big hits, 1985 saw the release of a wealth of less successful movies, some of which found a second life on the then-huge home video circuit. Here's our pick of 20 underappreciated films from the year of Rambo,...

We are honestly proud to bring the Golan-Globus epic, the flagship of Cannon Films, Death Wish 3 for its 30th anniversary. I’ve been wanting to show this film for some time now and lord knows people have demanded it (namely Jeremy Jones, who contributes to Dtb). If you haven’t seen any or the previous Death Wish films, you’ll be fine. They pretty much recap it in the beginning and let’s face it, there wasn’t really a heavy plot to Death Wish or Death Wish 2.
Death Wish 3

Charles Bronson brings out the heavy artillery in this gun-blazing, no-holds-barred thriller! Paul Kersey (Bronson) longs to leave his fighting days behind him. But when he arrives in New York to visit an old friend, he finds him gasping for breath in a pool of blood! Now the silent avenger must wage war...

Death Wish 3 screens midnights this Friday and Saturday (April 3rd and 4th) at The Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave., St. Louis, Mo 63117) as part of Destroy the Brain’s Late Night Grindhouse Film Series
The wonderfully preposterous Death Wish 3 (1985) sends Charles Bronson to a New York City portrayed as a vast burned-out wasteland with tenements occupied by terrified old people and the entire city dominated by gangs of unwashed thugs (and not a cop in sight). I’ve seen Death Wish 3 many times over the years and it becomes funnier as it ages. The action is overblown to comic proportions and I lose count of all the people who are shot, blown up, stabbed, beaten, pushed off of rooftops, and generally maimed during the course of the film. Death Wish 3 plays like Charles Bronson’s 90-minute shooting gallery. Thugs pop up from behind cars,...

“….God told me to!”
God Told Me To screens midnights this Friday and Saturday (March 6th and 7th) at The Hi-Pointe Theater (1005 McCausland Ave., St. Louis, Mo 63117)
In the Fall of 1976, my father dropped me off at the Hi-Pointe Theater after church one Sunday because I’d been bugging him about seeing the new horror film Rabid by David Cronenberg, a director who would soon become a favorite. Rabid was the first half of a double feature that afternoon, paired with something called Demon, which I knew nothing about except that it was rated R and was called Demon. While I loved the gory Rabid (and still do), my 14-year old mind was mostly just bewildered by the deranged religious madness and paranormal confusion on display in the less-gruesome Demon. About a dozen years later, I rented the VHS of Larry Cohen’s God Told Me To, and was surprised...

I am super psyched that we were able to grab the 4K restoration of Larry Cohen’s masterpiece, God Told Me To for our March Late Nite Grindhouse show. Come see what Time Out New York claims is one of the 100 best horror films.
“God Told Me To is without question one of darkest, sharpest, oddest films on this list, a tale of serial murder, religious mania and alien abduction shot on some of mid-’70s New York’s least salubrious streets. Cohen deserves to be mentioned alongside Carpenter and Craven in the horror canon – this might be Cohen’s masterpiece!”
- Time Out New York God Told Me To
1975 / dir. Larry Cohen / 4K Digital
A rooftop sniper guns down 14 pedestrians on the streets of New York City. A mild-mannered dad takes a shotgun and blows away his wife and children. A cop goes on a sudden shooting spree at the St.

Take the Charles Whitman inspired murders in Peter Bogdanovich's Targets, the satanic cult conception of Rosemary's Baby and toss in conspiracies from The Chariots of the Gods, a crazy Andy Kaufman cameo and sexual body horror that would make David Cronenberg blush and you'll get a rough idea of what you're in for with Larry Cohen's 1976 unconventional exploitation insanity known as God Told Me To.
The police procedural structure and gritty New York City atmosphere that permeates most of Cohen's work is punctuated with chaotic immediacy due to the Guerilla filmmaking and handheld cinematography that doesn't care about logical consistency and is concerned with creating panic and paranoia for the audience, not unlike the occurring calamity between characters and these bizarre events. Often due to budget and editing there is often no sense of time or reason to events as they unfold, which actually works in the film's...

Every year in Austin, Texas, the Alamo Drafthouse holds Fantastic Fest, a celebration of all things wild, weird, and wonderful in worldwide genre cinema. Most of these movies feature one or more of the following: animal cruelty, full-frontal nudity, fountains of blood and some kind of weird Japanese business. (If it's missing one or more of these elements, then it was probably admitted by mistake.)
Most film festivals are divided into the screenings and the parties; what Fantastic Fest does (brilliantly) is combine these two elements into a non-stop, week-long smorgasbord of good times. (This festival also included Mondo Con, a convention dedicated to pop culture artwork.) This was our first year at the festival and as such we tried to drink it all in.

The rise and fall of Cannon Films is told in Mark Hartley's wildly entertaining documentary, Electric Boogaloo. Here's Ryan's review...
Producers Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus were famous (or infamous) for many things, but a stringent approach to quality filmmaking was hardly one of them. At the height of their success in the 1980s, the Israeli cousins, and their company Cannon Films, were synonymous with cheap B-movies of just about every kind: Chuck Norris action flicks, sex comedies, ninja martial arts epics, dance movies and tawdry slasher horrors.
Their films frequently horrified critics, but became a staple of video rental stores: with Cannon Films cranking out as many as 50 or so pictures a year at its peak, the company's distinctive logo and self-explanatory film titles (New Year's Evil, Avenging Force, Enter The Ninja) were ubiquitous throughout the 80s and early 90s. The company was eventually brought down by its fast-and-loose approach to film production,...

The best way to describe how I approach Fantastic Fest is like summer camp. It happens once a year. You get back together with old friends. Yet in this case, this non-traditional camp is for fans of the most bizarre, violent, horrific, and Fantastic movies you could imagine. And even still, Fantastic Fest is so much more. This will be more third time attending Fantastic Fest and We Are Movie Geeks fourth time covering the crazy events that take place in Austin every September. For eight days I will be immersed in a world that is unlike any other film festival I have ever attended. What other festival is going to feature events like an opening night food fight, a karaoke party, a “nerd rap throwdown,” and the signature event at the festival – Fantastic Debates (which includes a verbal debate followed by a literal boxing match). These are just a...

Just as Rufus (George Carlin) predicted, Bill and Ted have had a profound influence on our culture. Maybe not as the rockers who would inspire a utopian global society by the 27th century, but look at how many other dumb-duo movies there have been since the release 25 years ago this week (on February 17, 1989) of "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" -- there's "Dumb and Dumber," "Beavis and Butt-head Do America," "Dude, Where's My Car," "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion," "Dick," and all of Kevin Smith's "Jay and Silent Bob" offerings, for starters. Plus, "Bill & Ted" launched a franchise and made a leading man out of Keanu Reeves.
Still, as often as you've traveled back in time and revisited the "Excellent Adventure," there's probably still plenty you don't know about the movie, including where it was filmed (hint: Not in San Dimas, California), which historical figures almost found their way into the film,...

Former Cannon Films exec and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves co-producer dies aged 87.
Former Cannon Films executive Michael J Kagan has died in London aged 87.
Kagan was head of production at well-known indie Cannon between 1982-88, during which time he was associate producer on two films directed by UK director Michael Winner: the 1983 remake of The Wicked Lady, starring Faye Dunaway, Alan Bates and John Gielgud, and Death Wish 3 in 1985.
He was also executive producer on Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987).
At its height in the 1980s, Cannon, then owned by renowned producers Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, was producing dozens of films per year, many of them B-movie classics.
Later in his career Kagan was line producer on Roger Spottiswoode’s action-comedy Air America and co-producer on box office hit Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves as well as Stephen Sommers’ The Jungle Book.
Kagan is survived by his wife Kate.

Ed Lauter, the popular character actor who specialized in playing tough guys, has died at age 74. Lauter was one of those familiar faces who was recognized by audiences even though many viewers did not know his name. For movie buffs, however, Lauter was well known and highly respected. He had dabbled with being a standup comic in the 1960s before trying his hand at acting. Lauter quickly gained a reputation as a reliable character actor and he became in-demand during the 1970s. Among his most memorable roles were a ruthless prison guard in director Robert Aldrich's 1974 hit The Longest Yard and as Ann-Margret's ill-fated husband in Richard Attenborough's 1978 thriller Magic. Other prominent roles included Hitchcock's final film Family Plot, The Magnificent Seven Ride!, Breakheart Pass, French Connection II, Hickey& Boggs, Death Wish 3 and, most recently Trouble With the Curve and the 2011 Best Picture Oscar winner The Artist.

Ed Lauter was one of my favorite character actors, one who seemed to be around as long as I can remember. With his height, balding head, and distinctive bearing, Lauter was often cast as cops, toughs and villains. He was Captain Knaur, the head prison guard opposite Burt Reynolds in The Longest Yard. He costarred with Charles Bronson four times (Breakheart Pass, The White Buffalo, Death Hunt, and Death Wish 3). He acted alongside Clint Eastwood last year in Trouble With The Curve (I was surprised that was the first time the two had performed together). He was in Hitchcock’s Family Plot and was one of the few highlights of the ’76 version of King Kong. He even had a nice role as Berenice Bejo’s butler in the Oscar-winning The Artist in 2011. He worked steadily for four decades and was always an asset to whatever film he was in.

He was the brutal prison guard who was Burt Reynolds' nemesis in the 1974 comedy-drama "The Longest Yard" and the sleazy gas station attendant in Alfred Hitchcock's last film, "The Family Plot.

I think everyone remembers where they were August 31st, 2003 when they heard that Charles Bronson had died. I was visiting my brother in Atlanta when my nephew knocked on my door and informed me that CNN had announced his death. I collapsed into a sobbing heap. Bronson was my hero, my muse, my role model. Hollywood’s brightest star would shine no more. It’s hard to believe he’s been gone ten years.
Charles Bronson was the unlikeliest of movie stars. Of all the leading men in the history of Hollywood, Charles Bronson had the least range as an actor. He rarely emoted or even changed his expression, and when he did speak, his voice was a reedy whisper. But Charles Bronson could coast on presence, charisma, and silent brooding menace like no one’s business and he wound up the world’s most bankable movie star throughout most of the 1970’s.

We told you a while back that The Scream Factory would be releasing both Scanners II: The New Order and Scanners III: The Takeover on Blu-ray and DVD this fall, and now we have some artwork to dig on!
The 1991 direct-to-video sequel Scanners II: The New Order starred David Hewlett of future “Stargate” TV fame and Deborah Raffin (Death Wish 3) in a tale about a mild-mannered scanner mixed up in a government conspiracy involving evil Scanners plotting a coup. Its lesser 1992 follow-up Scanners III: The Takeover starred no one in particular and dealt with a sibling rivalry between good and evil scanners.
Hopefully one day we'll see the original flick get the Blu-ray treatment it richly deserves. Fingers crossed!

Blood, guts and controversy abound, as we delve back to look at the evolving gore and mayhem in a dozen 80s videogames...
Ah, the 80s. The decade of video nasties, The A-Team, Boy George and Ronald Reagan. A time of conspicuous consumption and voluminous hair, the 80s was also the decade where videogames rapidly evolved, from the blocky 8-bit computers and consoles at its beginning, to the more powerful 16-bit systems at its end.
The 80s was also a period where the depiction of videogame gore would be realised with ever greater detail - much to the consternation of media watchdogs, who commonly regarded games as bleepy toys for children. The mainstream furore which would greet Mortal Kombat was still just over the horizon, but from the start of the start of the decade to its end, mischievous (and sometimes cynical, it has...

I was assistant district administrator at St Thomas' hospital in London in the mid 1980s, when Michael Winner approached us for permission to use the old Lambeth hospital site as a location for Death Wish 3. The hospital had closed, though the nurses home was still in use, and we were planning a community care centre for part of the site, so its future was in limbo.
I approached an old friend, Roger Stalley, a fellow of Trinity College Dublin, to find out how much Trinity had been paid for allowing filming of Educating Rita. I asked Winner for half that amount, to reflect the different circumstances. He was outraged and told me later that he phoned Lewis Gilbert, producer and director of Educating Rita, to berate him for overpaying. Nevertheless, Winner eventually agreed to the fee, due to the excellent negotiating skills of Helen Peston, the hospital's head of communications,...

Some may have thought that British movie director Michael Winner died years ago. He stopped making films in the ‘90s and even wrote his own joke obituary which was picked up on by some media and taken seriously. Winner continued to live in London and found a new career as a film critic with the long-running “Winner’s Dinners” column in the Sunday UK Times newspaper. Winner is remembered in the film industry as well as the restaurant scene for his abrasive personality,
He directed Charles Bronson in six films including three, The Mechanic, Death Wish, and Death 3, that landed in my Top Ten Tuesday: The Best of Charles Bronson list from July 2010 http://wearemoviegeeks.com/2010/06/top-ten-tuesday-charles-bronson/). Wilde, of course, starred as the Female Cenobite in Hellbound: Hellraiser II and as a punk thug in the late Michael Winner’s cult classic Death Wish 3. She’s well known in the UK as a media personality, however, and in recent years as one of the finest purveyors of erotically charged horror fiction around. Her first full length novel The Venus Complex is featured, along with a new interview with Wilde, in the upcoming Fangoria #321…
In the meantime, have a look at the cool poster for the event and if you are in the area, get there early….the room will no doubt fill up.
