Richard M. Sherman, a nine-time Academy Award nominee and one of the songwriting brothers behind Disney movies like 1964’s Mary Poppins and 1967’s The Jungle Book, has died at 95. Sherman died of age-related illness at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills on Saturday, according to a Walt Disney Company announcement. Robert B. Richard and Robert wrote more than 200 songs for some 27 films and 24 television productions, Disney reports. Their film credits include The Absent-Minded Professor (1961), The Parent Trap (1961), Summer Magic (1963), The Sword in the Stone (1963), That Darn Cat! Members of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and recipients of the National Medal of Honor, Richard and his older brother, Robert Sherman, wrote an estimated 1,000 songs and music for 50 movies, and they were responsible for more movie musical songs than anyone in history.

Disney has put the live-action remake of 'The Sword in the Stone' on hold. The 1963 animation had been expected to follow the likes of 'Cinderella', 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'The Lion King' in being turned into a live-action blockbuster by the media corporation but now, according to 'Damsel' director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, the project has been put on the back burner for now. He told Collider: "I was attached a long time ago, and I prepped a lot for Disney for that movie. I don’t know exactly what happened, but the studio decided to hold the project. "So right now it’s in a holding situation, and I don’t know what’s going to happen, to be honest. But I think it’s a great story. "I would be so keen to make it if they decided to greenlight the project.

Disney CEO Bob Iger recently revealed that the studio has secretly “killed a few projects” that they didn’t think were strong enough. Could one of those projects have been the live-action adaptation of The Sword in the Stone?
28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo was attached to direct the live-action adaptation of The Sword in the Stone, but he recently told Collider that Disney has put the project on hold for now. “I was attached a long time ago, and I prepped a lot for Disney for that movie,” Fresnadillo said. “I don’t know exactly what happened, but the studio decided to hold the project. Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo – of 28 Weeks Later and Damsel fame – says that his live-action Sword In The Stone for Disney is on hold, but he’s now developing a romantic thriller in the vein of Hitchcock.
For many, Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is perhaps best known for 28 Weeks Later, the downbeat and singularly terrifying 2007 horror sequel to Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later. This week, meanwhile, seems him in less disturbing territory with the fantasy adventure Damsel, which places Millie Bobby Brown in a dank lair inhabited by an angry dragon.
Not that it’s Fresnadillo’s only dip into fantastical waters; for several years, he was attached to a live action remake of The Sword In The Stone for Disney. When Disney 2D animation legend Andreas Deja left the studio in 2013 after three decades — he’s best known for supervising such iconic ’90s villains as Gaston from “Beauty and the Beast,” Jafar from “Aladdin,” and Scar from “The Lion King” — he wanted to direct. Thus began a seven-year passion project to make his first short, “Mushka” (a Russian term of endearment for “sweetheart”), about a young girl who rescues the titular tiger cub in the forest and raises him.
Deja’s goal was to channel the look of the Disney films from the ’60s that he grew up with in Germany, particularly “The Jungle Book” — the first he experienced and his favorite — which made him want to become an animator.
Deja started thinking about returning to his first love — drawing animals — and the friendly dynamic between the innocent girl and the powerful tiger. It turned out to be a fitting...

With this year being the 100 year anniversary of The Walt Disney Company and the release of their latest animated title, Wish, we wanted to know what animated Disney film has been your favorite over the years? We stuck to films specifically released by Disney, so no Pixar titles are included. What struck me while compiling the list is the progression of their films. From the innocence of their early work to what many consider their heyday in the early 90’s to the emergence of the CGI era. For many of us, Disney films defined our youth, but which is the one that has remained with you all these years? As always, if you don’t see your favorite listed, please click “Other” and let us know what it is in the comments section as well as any fond memories you have of these timeless classics.

Since the Writers Guild of American and Screen Actors Guild are both still on strike, this year's Destination D23 convention down in Orlando, Florida didn't really have much of anything to showcase. Animator, director, producer and story artist Burny Mattinson, who joined the Walt Disney Company at the end of its first great run of films, when Dumbo (1941) and Bambi (1942) were new and an in-his-prime Walt Disney was just 42 years old, died today. He was 87. He was the last full-time Walt Disney Studios employee who had worked at the company when Walt Disney still ran it.
Seeing the studio’s Pinocchio at the age of six convinced Mattinson he wanted to work in animation. “Ever since I saw that film, this was my dream—to work in this business,” he recalled years later. “So I worked every day, drawing.”

Burny Mattinson, a Disney Legend who served as an animator, producer, director and story artist in his nearly 70-year career with the studio, died Monday at the age of 87 following a short illness. Disney announced his death on their official website.
The story goes that Mattinson, who was born in San Francisco in 1935, was transformed when his mother took him to see Walt Disney’s “Pinocchio” at the age of 6. He knew what he wanted to do. As Don Hahn, who produced some of Disney’s most beloved movies during the Disney Renaissance, said of Mattinson’s life: “His life could be a Disney movie: teenaged kid shows up at the Disney gate with his portfolio under his arm and stays for 70 years. He was our story sensei, a brilliant draftsman who showed us what it was like to grind on a story until it was right.”

I don’t remember the first time I heard someone joke about Mario getting high in Super Mario Bros. by eating all the mushrooms he finds, but it certainly feels like that joke is old as Super Mario Bros. itself.
If you hear that joke when you’re 12 or 22, you’ll likely treat it like some kind of incredible revelation that changes the way you look at the Super Mario Bros. franchise. At some point, though, the gag becomes yet another example of someone trying to apply an edge to a kid-friendly product by making some kind of barely believable suggestion that the whole thing is actually about something slightly darker. It’s a funny thing to joke about, but it starts to get a little more awkward when someone treats that theory as the absolute truth.
Do you know what’s really funny, though? It turns out that the...

Photo: ‘The Green Knight'/A24 At long last, one of the year's most feverishly anticipated releases has fought its way onto movie screens around the world. David Lowery, director of ‘A Ghost Story’ (2017) and ‘Pete’s Dragon’ (2016), has returned to cinemas with a surreal yet rapturous retelling of the famed 14th century chivalric romance of Arthurian lore; “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight”. Audiences expecting the epic scale of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ or steadfast moral fortitude of typical Camelot fare will find themselves decidedly bewildered by the introspective asymmetry of ‘The Green Knight’ (2021) The latest masterclass in subversion from A24, the titans of modern experimentalism responsible for films like ‘The Lighthouse’ (2019) and ‘Moonlight’ (2016), ‘The Green Knight’ ultimately feels more akin to ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ (1988) than it does ‘The Sword in the Stone’ (1963). It’s tempting to think of the first “Star Wars” movie as ground zero for the new era of popular culture. But part of the primal power of George Lucas’s sci-fi landmark is that it represented a kind of dawn-of-the-digital-age, joystick-happy recycling of many, many things from the past. It drew on the ramshackle movie serials of the ’40s and ’50s. It drew on classic films as serious as John Ford’s “The Searchers” and Akira Kurosawa’s “The Hidden Fortress.” And, of course, there would have been no “Star Wars” without J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings”.
One of the reasons the “Lord of the Rings” films became such a massive cultural phenomenon is that they were, in effect, the true prequels to “Star Wars.” (It didn’t matter that they unfolded in a more primitive world; they took you over the hills and far away.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Mythic Quest” Season 1, Episode 11, “Everlight.”]
When the Apple TV+ comedy “Mythic Quest” debuted its “Quarantine” episode in late May of last year, Rob McElhenney’s sweet ode to caring co-workers hit at the right time, with the right notes. Zany virtual bets and inventive Zoom experiments made the half-hour a joyful reprieve, just like much of the show that preceded it. But two months into stay-at-home orders, Poppy Li’s struggles with social isolation — and her co-creative director Ian’s recognition of her deteriorating morale — gave the episode an extra emotional wallop. Not only did anxious audiences need the kind of respite good comedy can provide, but they needed someone to acknowledge how exhausting all that lonely worrying had become.
Nearly a year later, “Mythic Quest” is back, with both a new season (set to premiere May 7) and a new bonus episode. “Everlight” is much more traditionally executed than its predecessor,...

Under the terms of the agreement, he is set to develop scripted television and new media projects for eOne. First up on his slate is a contemporary series based on Akira Kurosawa’s “Yojimbo,” to be produced by Mark Gordon under the latter’s deal with eOne.
“I’m delighted and honored to call eOne my new home and very excited to work with Michael and his terrific team,” said Cogman. “eOne’s global reach and its dynamic, wide-ranging library of IP make it a truly exciting place to tell stories. The following contains spoilers for Netflix’s Cursed. Read our spoiler-free review of the series here.
While Netflix’s Cursed focuses primarily on the story of Nimue, a young girl with a magical gift and a dark destiny as the future Lady of the Lake, it asks its audience to engage with the traditional tropes of Arthurian legend in new and interesting ways.
Cursed’s Merlin may also feel a bit strange to viewers who are only familiar with the character as the legendary wizard from film adaptations like Disney’s The Sword in the Stone, or the famous T.H. White novel it’s based on, The Once and Future King. In these – and most other – retellings, Merlin is a figure of great power and wisdom. His magical abilities are substantial and he’s generally depicted as a sort of all-seeing sage, who engineers the birth of Arthur and the...

Netflix’s Cursed will (rightly) generate a lot of buzz for the way it injects a much-needed female perspective into the traditionally male world of Arthurian legend. The series gives a voice to a largely unexplored female character by focusing on the story of Fey girl Nimue, who is destined to one day become the Lady of the Lake. But in doing so, it also reimagines our understanding of Arthur himself, putting a fresh, new spin on a centuries-old figure.
The Arthur we first meet in Cursed isn’t exactly what you’d call once and future king material. A young mercenary for hire, initially he seems to be little more than a hustler looking out for his own ends. That this is a significant departure from the stories we generally know, to put it mildly.
Traditionally, Arthur is generally presented as the noblest of terms, either as a legendary...

After the wild success of Beauty and the Beast, Disney has apparently become determined to give the live-action treatment to every single one of their animated classics. 2019 alone saw Dumbo, Aladdin, Lady and the Tramp and The Lion King, with the delayed Mulan landing soon.
Beyond that, we know they’re working on adaptations of The Little Mermaid, The Sword in the Stone, Pinocchio, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Lilo & Stitch, among others. And now, we can apparently add a silly ol’ bear to that list, as we’re hearing from our sources – the same ones who told us live-action remakes of Robin Hood, Hercules and Bambi were in the works months before they were announced – that another live-action Winnie the Pooh film is meandering through the production line towards us.
Plot details are still scarce, but from what we understand, it won’t be related in any way to 2018’s Christopher Robin.

The Walt Disney Company has lately made something of an artform out of reimagining its own animated features into (often) billion-dollar live-action films, starting with Alice in Wonderland in 2010 and continuing with Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin, as well as the photorealistic computer animated remake of The Lion King.
A live-action version of Mulan, said to be more faithful to the original Chinese folktale than Disney’s 1998 animated film, is set to premiere this Spring, with Cruella, The Little Mermaid, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Peter Pan & Wendy, The Sword in the Stone, Lilo & Stitch, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Bambi, as well as Jungle Book and Aladdin sequels and possible Tinker Bell and Prince Charming projects, slated to be remade over the coming years.
According to The DisInsider, a potential live-action Rapunzel film has now been added to that extensive list as well, though...

After the bumper success of Beauty and the Beast, Disney appears determined to give the live-action treatment to every single one of their animated classics. 2019 alone has seen Dumbo, Aladdin and The Lion King hit cinemas, with Lady and the Tramp and Mulan landing very soon. Beyond that, we know they’re working on adaptations of The Little Mermaid, The Sword in the Stone, Pinocchio, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Lilo & Stitch. But, there’s a couple of notable animated classics that we haven’t heard much about, with the most interesting one being Hercules.
A live-action adaptation of the 1997 movie feels like a no-brainer, and though the previous frontrunner for the lead role was Alexander Skarsgard, I’ve seen hints that they’re in negotiations to cast Trevor Donovan instead. Donovan, best known for 90210, has been not-so-subtly hinting on social media that something’s going on...

We’re only three months away from the launch of Disney Plus, and the House of Mouse has amassed quite a catalog of films available to stream from the start. In fact, now that Disney has completely acquired Fox, more than 300 movie titles will be available upon its debut on November 12th. And within a year, that’s expected to grow by 200 more.
Considering Disney Plus will go head-to-head with Netflix, Hulu and other at-home streaming services, this large array of exclusive selections is expected to give Disney an upper hand against its ever-growing competition. That being said, while Disney’s platform prides itself as the future home for exclusive Marvel and Star Wars content, the service won’t actually launch with every film in either franchise.
In fact, only four Marvel movies will be accessible from day one – Iron Man, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain Marvel.

The Lion King is still in theaters, having just roared past $1 billion at the box office. Unsurprisingly then, Disney’s now working on another live-action remake of one of their classics that has a feline theme as well. According to our sources – the same ones who revealed Kevin Hart and Ryan Reynolds‘ cameos in Hobbs & Shaw months ago – The Aristocats is the latest of many properties that the studio has lined up for the remake treatment.
The original 1970 movie followed pampered Parisian cat Duchess and her three kittens as they get thrown out on the streets by greedy butler Edgar, meeting the charming rogue Thomas O’Malley the alley cat in the process. Details on the remake are still scarce and it’s far too early for casting or anything like that, but again, we’ve been told it’s on the studio’s list as with the success they...

Disney’s recent reboot of The Lion King surprised absolutely no one by dominating the box office this summer. Live-action remakes are basically printing money for the studio right now. However, not everyone is happy that classic films are being reimagined so often by those in charge. Several of the animators from the original Lion King are especially displeased by the 2019 flick. A few even say that they refuse to go watch the new movie in theaters.
David Stephan worked on the opening “Circle of Life” sequence back in 1992, as well as the design of the hyenas back in 1994 and had this to say in regards to the feature:
“If you polled the crew of the original Lion King, most of them would say, ‘Why? Did you really have to do that?’ It kind of hurts… It’s sort of sad that the stockholder is now in the room deciding what movies get made.

Jk Rowling stole the idea of Harry Potter from Neil Gaiman you know. Tim Hunter first appeared back in Books of Magic issue 1, January 1990, whereas Harry Potter first appeared in print in 1997. Both feature a school attending, glasses wearing English boy with a pet owl destined to be a great magician. Gotcha, Jk! Or so the urban myth goes. In reality, as all creative people know, these things bubble away for years before appearing, and Jk Rowling had been working on the ideas behind Harry Potter for several years . As Neil Gaiman himself has said, Harry Potter and Tim Hunter both in spirit come from the same source materials. In Gaiman’s case, his inspiration for Tim Hunter was T.H White’s ‘The Sword in the Stone’, about a young boy destined to grow up and become a great hero.
