With his whitish blond crew-cut, slow, menacing drawl and Germanic manner, Van Eyck was destined to be typecast as stereotypically scowling, arrogant Nazi officers. This was ironic, because he was an avowed anti-fascist who had left Germany in 1931 -- two years before Adolf Hitler came to power. The son of an aristocratic Prussian land owner, his father had intended him to embark on a military career. Instead, Peter spent his education in Berlin, where he trained as a musician.
In 1937, Van Eyck arrived in New York via Havana, Cuba, and became acquainted with the composer Aaron Copland. This led to a collaboration, as well as solo efforts, as composer and lyricist on a variety of songs for revue and cabaret. He also moonlighted as a pianist in bars and nightclubs. Around this time, he also began to work as a stage manager and arranger for Irving Berlin. Not afraid to try any job that came along, he tried his hand at driving a truck, and this, somehow, led him to Hollywood where he became a protege of the director Billy Wilder. Wilder prompted him to appear in front of the camera. In 1943, Peter commenced his career in films, by this time, as a naturalized American citizen. For the remainder of the decade, he had little to do but act an assembly line of parts as German officers and Gestapo henchmen in films like Five Graves to Cairo (1943) and Address Unknown (1944).
After the war, Van Eyck returned to Germany, where he was ironically cast as an American officer in Hallo, Fräulein! (1949). He also appeared in the comedy Royal Children (1950) ,with Jenny Jugo), as yet another American. He gave one of his very best performances in the role of Bimba in Henri-Georges Clouzot's high octane thriller The Wages of Fear (1953). In this famous French classic, he played one of a group of daredevil truck drivers traversing an impenetrable South American jungle with a deadly load of nitroglycerin.
Down the track, he found other good roles: as the womanising Frenchman Fribert in Rosemary (1958); as a police inspector investigating a famous murder in Dr. Crippen lebt (1958),aka ('Dr.Crippen lives'); a starring role as Paul Decker, who attempts the perfect murder of his wife in The Snorkel (1958); and one of two industrialist brothers in Helmut Käutner''s The Rest Is Silence (1959).
During the 60's, Van Eyck appeared increasingly in international co-productions of variable quality. Having settled in Switzerland and maintaining a residence in Paris, he was ideally placed to alternate between French, English and German film roles. He made three potboilers about the master criminal Dr. Mabuse which were extremely popular in Germany. His best performances during this period were as the East German intelligence officer Mundt, who is the target of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965) and as Colonel General von Brock in the absorbing war drama The Bridge at Remagen (1969), which was also his last film.
Van Eyck died near Zurich in July,1969, of septicemia, just short of his 58th birthday.- Actor

Claus Biederstaedt was born in Stargard, a mid-sized historic town in Pomerania, the son of a senior educational councillor who was also a conductor and taught music and art history. He was conscripted into the army as a 16-year-old and served on the Eastern Front, barely managing to escape to the west ahead of the Russian advance in 1945. His mother, believing her only son killed in action, tragically committed suicide by poison. Biederstaedt eventually reunited with his father in Hamburg and began to study medicine on the way to a career as a physician. However, after matriculating, he changed his plans and instead joined the ensemble of the Deutsches Theatre in Hamburg where he received acting tuition from noted thespians Will Quadflieg and Joseph Offenbach. He made his stage debut in 1950 and two years later first appeared on screen in the medical drama Die große Versuchung (1952), winning a coveted Film Award in Gold as most promising newcomer.
At the peak of his popularity in the '50s and '60s, Biederstaedt popped up in as many as five pictures a year, becoming one of the most sought-after lead actors in German cinema. A cheerful presence, he made himself at home in most contemporary genres, from wartime melodramas to romantic comedies (he famously gave Romy Schneider her first screen kiss in Fireworks (1954)). By the 1970s, he made regular TV appearances (Der Kommissar (1969), The Old Fox (1977), Derrick (1974), etc.) and worked behind the microphone as a singularly prolific voice-over actor, his trademark deep, smoky tones used for dubbing (among others) Peter Falk (Columbo (1971)), James Garner (The Rockford Files (1974)), Gregory Peck (Other People's Money (1991)), Gene Hackman (Lucky Lady (1975)), Richard Harris (A Man Called Horse (1970) ), Yul Brynner (Villa Rides (1968)), Paul Newman (Torn Curtain (1966)) and Marlon Brando (Bedtime Story (1964)). Biederstaedt also acted on and directed for the stage until cancer pre-empted his retirement in 2008. He died on June 18, 2020, ten days prior to his 92nd birthday.- Music Artist

- Anna Anderson was born Franziska Schanzkowska in 1899 in Poland. When she was young she became a munitions worker until an explosion in the factory that she worked in. In 1920, shortly after the explosion, she tried to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge in Berlin. She was institutionalized, but because she would not tell them her name they called her Miss Unknown. After two years at the institution she finally told people that she was Grand Duchess Anastasia, the last daughter of Czar Nicholas II of Russia. Many people who knew the real Anastasia came to see her, some calling her a fake, others saying that she had to be the real thing.
After several years of this she left the institution and stayed with friends who supported her claim that she was Anastasia. For years she went from friends house to institution all the while claiming that she was Anastasia. During this time there was a trial going on to determine wither or not she was the real Anastasia. During the 30 year trial the brother and sisters of Tsarina Alexandra tried to get the judge to say that this woman could not be Anastasia because she died with the rest of her family. Anastasia's uncle even hired a detective and came up with information about Anna. He strongly believed that she was Franziska Schanzkowska and not his niece Anastasia.
In the 1960s Anna moved to the United States and continued to stay with friends. One time though when she could not take it anymore she checked into a hotel under the assumed name of Anna Anderson and the moniker stuck. Right before Anna's visa was to expire she married John "Jack" Manahan. They lived together in Charlottesville Virginia until her death in 1983.
Several years after her death a body part of hers turned up in the hospital in Charlottesville and scientist decided that it was time to find out wither or not Anna Andersonn was indeed Anastasia. They tested her DNA against the DNA of an Uncle of Anastasias as well as the DNA of Carl Moucher a grand nephew of Franziska Schanzkowska. The DNA test concluded that Anna Andersonn was indeed Franziska Schanzkowska and not Anastasia. Further proof came in the late 1990s when the bodies of the Russian Royal Family were found. - German novelist Alfred Doblin was born in Stettin, Germany, in 1888. When he was ten years old his family moved to Berlin, and Alfred later attended Berlin and Freiburg universities, where he studied medicine. He received his MD degree in 1905 and was hired by a newspaper in Regensburg as a correspondent. By this time he had already written two novels (only one of which was published, and that one not until 1919). His first published works were short stories published in a local magazine in 1904.
He returned to Berlin in 1911 and set up a medical practice specializing in nervous disorders in the Alexanderplatz district. He continued writing, however, and in 1915 published to critical acclaim the novel "Die Drei Sprunge des Wang-lun". World War I interrupted his writing and medical careers, and he joined the German army as a physician. He remained in the army for three years, and took part in the horrendous battle of Verdun, in which it is estimated that more than one million men died. After the war he continued writing and several of his novels were published, including "Wallenstein" (1920), an epic novel about the Thirty Years War. He didn't confine himself just to historical novels, however. He turned out several plays and a science-fiction fantasy, "Berge, Meere und Giganten" (1924), about life in the period from the years 2700-3000 in which machines have taken over the most of the functions performed by man, wreaking havoc with humanity.
In 1926 he was elected to the Prussian Academy. In 1927 he turned out an epic poem, "Manas", and then two years later he published what many consider his masterwork, "Alexanderplatz", a novel about life in the working-class Berlin district where he spent many years. He wrote more books and plays that were successful, but the rise of Naziism and Adolf Hitler troubled him, and he left Germany. He moved around Europe until the German takeover of Holland, where he was living at the time, resulted in his moving to the US, where he settled down in Hollywood.
He moved back to Germany after the war, and died in Emmendingen in 1957 at age 78 of Parkinson's Disease. - Additional Crew
