The story of Claire, played by Lena Olin, thwarted in her own artistic ambitions, could have been a force for feminism, but the camera’s gaze is instead fixated on how gorgeous she is
“I create the art. She creates the rest of life. Everything we do is up to Claire.” That’s painter Richard Smythson speaking, an artworld big gun, Jackson Pollock-meets-Philip Roth, played by Bruce Dern. He’s being interviewed in front of camera alongside his long-suffering wife Claire (Lena Olin). Her response is frozen on screen for a split second: a forced smile and behind it a flash of panicked terror and possibly rage. It’s a moment of clarity that triggers a late-marriage crisis in Tom Dolby’s tasteful drama, brilliantly acted but never entirely credible and not quite the force for feminism it wants to be.
Pretty soon it’s clear what a...

To be a muse is to sign a raw deal, for muses are relegated to an ancillary status in which their talents serve their partner rather than themselves. They are the pseudo-collaborator who’s never creative in their own right. Spare a thought, then, for Claire Smythson (Lena Olin), because she’s not so much the muse to her husband Richard (Bruce Dern), a famous abstract artist, but the maid, manager and mother.
Richard is the proverbial artistic ego – pretentious, self indulgent, and convinced of his own eccentric genius. Difficult and recalcitrant, he knows that Claire will deal with the consequences of his moods and self-destruction. His seminars at a local art school, for example, turn into theatrical provocations that are a big middle finger to the modish sensibilities of trigger warnings and safe spaces. When the complaints reach the dean, it is Claire who’s called to the office.

In “The Artist’s Wife,” Lena Olin plays Claire, the wife of an abstract artist, Richard, played by Bruce Dern. Her life is perfectly composed. That is until Richard is diagnosed with dementia and their perfect world starts to disintegrate.
Written and directed by Tom Dolby, the story is close to his heart, as it was partially inspired by his relationship with his father, Ray Dolby, the sound engineer.
In this Framing the Scene, Dolby and his cinematographer Ryan Earl Parker break down, a key moment in the film — the culmination of tension as Claire returns home one day to a scene of destruction and mess. It is the explosion of Richard’s frustration and her realizing her husband’s decline.
Influences from the ’70s and ’80s
Tom Dolby: The look of the film, up to this point in the movie was so composed. Claire’s world was so organized, rigid and almost geometric.

Living in the shadow of a famous and talented spouse can be hard, particularly when one has to give up ambitions of their own ambitious. It is nearly always the wives who abandon their careers to focus on a famous husband’s work, particularly if it was in the same field. In The Artist’S Wife, Claire (Lena Olin) is long reconciled to dropping her own career as an artist to support the career of her famous, successful artist husband Richard (Bruce Dern). In fact, Claire thinks of Richard’s career as “their career” and Richard’s loving devotion to Claire, his younger second wife, reinforces her view that they are an artistic team. But when Richard receives a devastating medical diagnosis and...

Sometimes during a competitive Oscar season, a trend emerges around a shared topic. Remember the 71st Academy Awards rewarding the best films of 1998 when three out of the five Best Picture candidates revolved around World War II: “Life Is Beautiful,” “Saving Private Ryan” and “The Thin Red Line.” One of the recurring themes of 2020 is dementia, an insidious disease if ever there was one as it affects not only the patient, but also their relationships with loved ones. There are at least six movies, including one documentary, that revolve around such memory loss this year:
“The Father” (Sony Pictures Classics) – This Sundance Film Festival stand-out pits two Oscar-winning actors, Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, against one another as a senile parent and the daughter who moves in with him. French director Florian Zeller co-wrote the screenplay based on his own play. Critic Todd McCarthy (Hollywood Reporter) declared it “the best...

By now, there have been enough movies and TV dramas focused on the fraying ties between individuals gradually diminished by Alzheimer’s disease and their supportive but increasingly stressed loved ones to constitute an entire subgenre. If “The Artist’s Wife” stands apart from the pack, it’s largely because this familiar but affecting drama spends less time on depicting the systematic lessening of an exceptional intellect — though, rest assured, that tragedy is not at all minimized — and focuses more on the psychic toll taken on a loyal life partner whose selflessness is running on empty.
Right from the start, director Tom Dolby, working in concert with co-writers Nicole Brending and Abdi Nazemian, makes it clear that Claire (Lena Olin), the younger but no longer young wife of aged celebrity artist Richard Smythson (Bruce Dern), long ago settled into subservience in the spacious confines of their well-appointed East Hamptons home.

It would have been good for The Artist’s Wife if The Wife hadn’t come along first.
Like a first spouse whose presence often hovers over a second marriage, the Glenn Close-Jonathan Pryce drama gives a “been there, done that” feeling to Tom Dolby’s sophomore feature about the relationship between a famed artist experiencing the beginning stages of dementia and his supportive wife who subjugated her own artistic career to his. Despite its value in providing superb starring turns by Lena Olin and Bruce Dern, the film never manages to overcome its air of familiarity.

Strand Releasing and Water’s End Productions has decided to postpone the domestic release of The Artist’s Wife in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The Tom Dolby-directed drama starring Lena Olin and Bruce Dern was set to debut on April 3 in New York, April 10 in Los Angeles and April 17 in San Francisco. The film will be released later this year.
“With our particular audience as well as the general public’s safety in mind, we have decided to delay the release of The Artist’s Wife,” said Dolby. “This film is about love and hope bringing people together in the face of adversity, and it’s important to us that as much of our audience as possible is able to see it in a group setting. We’re enthusiastic about showing the film when the time is right.”

For decades, Bruce Dern has been one of the industry’s most compelling and often underrated actors. In recent years, Dern has only occasionally gotten central roles to play, more often being given supporting parts. This April, however, he gets a plum role in The Artist’s Wife, an independent drama which he stars in. Truly, for fans of great acting, this is a treat. A Trailer has dropped for the flick, which you will be able to see at the end of this post. If you love Dern, in particular, you’re in for something special here. The movie is a drama that will almost certainly tug at the heartstrings. IMDb describes the film as such: “Claire Smythson, wife of the renowned abstract artist Richard Smythson, is plunged into a late-life crisis when her husband is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and is in danger of not completing the paintings for his final show.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences added more details Monday to the news relayed at the Oscar Nominees Luncheon by president David Rubin that the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has reached 95% of its funding goal. AMPAS said the institution has raised more than $368 million in pledges and cash, near its $388 million pre-opening campaign goal.
The Campaign for the Academy Museum was launched in 2012, headed by chair Bob Iger and co-chairs Annette Bening and Tom Hanks. Rubin gave Iger a shout-out today at the luncheon at the Ray Dolby Ballroom.
The Academy Museum is still targeting a 2020 open date for its Mid-Wilshire District home, saying the 300,000 square-foot public and exhibition space is in its final exhibition design, build-out, and testing stages.

Fundraising for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has reached more than $368 million in pledges and cash, making up 95% of its $388 million campaign goal.
The announcement was by Academy President David Rubin at the nominees luncheon on Monday, less than two weeks before the 92nd Academy Awards on Feb. 9. The Academy also said the facility would open later this year at Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, where the former May Co. department store was located, following final exhibition design, build-out and testing. It gave no specific date.
The museum was first announced in 2012 with chair Bob Iger and co-chairs Annette Bening and Tom Hanks, when the Academy unveiled plans by architect Renzo Piano, and projected that the museum would open in 2016. The Academy launched a $250 million fundraising campaign and collected $200 million in pledges. After that, however, fundraising stalled and costs ballooned.

The most striking moments in Last Weekend are not the expected ones. It's not the way first-time directors Tom Dolby and Tom Williams shoot the palatial Lake Tahoe cabin previously featured in A Place in the Sun with the well-framed languor of architecture porn.
Nor is it in the vaguely Chekhovian overtones of Dolby's script. Instead, it's in the way members of a wealthy family respond to the gratitude and politeness of their weekend houseguests with an offhand thoughtlessness that makes the recipients wince.
That stems from the scattered and demanding matriarch, Celia Green (Patricia Clarkson), whose profound unease with money means she'll create an extravagant dinner-table display and then announce that the salmon was on sale.

Imagine that Cate Blanchett's Blue Jasmine character had been evicted from her bubble of complacent privilege not by calamity and public humiliation but by the veil of melancholy that descends with fraying family bonds and the encroaching awareness that the sun is setting on life's most joyous moments. That more or less describes the character played with dry humor and complexity by Patricia Clarkson in Last Weekend. Restrained and elegant to a fault, this first feature from co-directors Tom Dolby and Tom Williams is too muted in its catharsis and too overcrowded with superfluous characters to be fully satisfying, but
