If you are a horror fan then you might have heard about the director duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who gave us brilliant horror films like 2022’s Scream and 2019’s Ready or Not and now they are back with their new and even campier horror film Abigail. Written by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick, the new horror film is a reimagining of the 1936 Universal Classic Monsters film Dracula’s Daughter and it follows the story of a group of kidnappers who are told to kidnap the daughter of a very powerful man and keep her in the house for 24 hours, but they quickly realize that the daughter might not be what she seems. In 2020, we were introduced to Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, a unique musical dramedy about a computer coder (Jane Levy) who suddenly began to hear people’s innermost thoughts through song, allowing for many impressive performances and some of our favorite moments of TV to this day. After two seasons at NBC, it was canceled, but then fans got a follow-up movie on The Roku Channel, Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas, in 2021. So what are the chances for more of any kind? We’ll take another season, movie, anything! “I’m sitting right now in the production office of Zoey’s because we actually shoot on this exact same lot,” Skylar Astin (who played Max) tells TV Insider while discussing his current hit show, So Help Me Todd. “I’m currently in what was [Zoey’s creator] Austin Winsberg’s office. So it’s always a bit of a time warp to come here to work.

Author Stephen Graham Jones started his Indian Lake Trilogy with the novel My Heart Is a Chainsaw, which has an audiobook version that was read by Cara Gee, who may be best known for her work on the TV shows Strange Empire and The Expanse. The second novel in the series was Don’t Fear the Reaper, and the audiobook for that one had a full cast that included Isabella Star Lablanc (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines) and Jane Levy (Evil Dead 2013). The Indian Lake Trilogy is set to wrap up with The Angel of Indian Lake, which will be published on March 26th – and our friends at Bloody Disgusting have learned that the audiobook for this one is also going to have a full cast, with one of the cast members being the legendary Stephen King! Pre-orders can be made at This Link.

Jane Levy is taking on her first stage role!
The 34-year-old actress, best known for starring in the NBC musical series Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, is starring in the ensemble comedy Potus at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles.
Jane joins Alexandra Billings, Lauren Blumenfield, and more in the hilarious play that debuted on Broadway back in 2022.
In Potus, when the President unwittingly spins a PR nightmare into a global crisis, it inevitably falls on the seven women he relies on most to clean up the mess. Jane plays the role of Dusty, originally played by Julianne Hough on Broadway.
Jane is getting raves for her performance. TheaterMania noted, “The stand-out is Jane Levy, as the sexually confident, quick-thinking Dusty. Dizzy, but crazy like a fox, her Dusty becomes the moral center in an insane world.”

During its impressive 12-season run on Fox, viewers fell hard in love with the "Bones" investigative team at the Jeffersonian Institute Medico-Legal Lab. The initial hook was the sparkling chemistry between Emily Deschanel's brilliant Temperance "Bones" Brennan and David Boreanaz's smart-aleck FBI Agent Seeley Booth, but, as the series progressed, fans came to care just as much for the quirky crew that helped Bones and Booth catch all kinds of creepy killers once a week. So when they found themselves up against a formidably devious foe, the show's fans legitimately feared for their safety. And creator Hart Hanson and his crack team of writers capably played on these fears, going so far as to knock off John Francis Daley's lovable FBI psychologist Lance Sweets at the outset of season 10.

The motion picture academy has handed out Oscars for leading performances since the first ceremony in 1929. While the Best Actor prize is typically taken by a veteran, the Best Actress Oscar has tended to go to an ingenue. However, those age biases could be changing.
While a whopping 32 of the 96 Best Actress champs were in their 20s when they picked up their Oscars, the last five women to win were: 60-year-old Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”); 45-year old Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”); double champ Frances McDormand, 45-year-old Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) and 50-year-old Renee Zellweger (“Judy”). Yeoh’s closest rival last year was Cate Blanchett, 53, for “Tar.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2024 Oscar predictions for Best Actress.)
Besides Zellweger, the only other Best Actress champs in their 50s were both 54 when they won: Julianne Moore, who finally prevailed after four losses for “Still Alice...

Unlike a movie, a TV show is not generally meant to be consumed in a single sitting. It is, at least in theory, designed to be enjoyed episode by episode. So having already celebrated the best series of the year (and the best TV performances), we’re here now to highlight a few individual chapters that particularly stood out to us from our hundreds and hundreds of hours of viewing.
As a rule, we excluded any title that had already made either of our individual top 10s. (Sorry, Richie episode of The Bear. And “Long, Long Time” from The Last of Us. And half this season of Succession. Half this season of Reservation Dogs. And, and, and …) This was in part to save ourselves the trouble of singing praises we’ve already sung so many times before, but mostly in an effort to spread the love. For the same reasons,...

How the heck do you rank the "Evil Dead" movies?
No horror franchise has taken bigger swings, with entries ranging from brutal, unrelenting horror to straight-up goofball slapstick. No horror franchise has proven more consistent in its inconsistency, with each entry showcasing an anarchic streak a mile wide. If an "Evil Dead" movie isn't trying to startle you out of your skin with transgressive intensity, it's trying to make you giggle like a loon. And sometimes, it tries to make you giggle like a loon using that transgressive intensity. Director Sam Raimi made it clear with his original three movies that there are no hard and fast rules in this universe -- and other filmmakers have gleefully stepped in and followed suit. The only thing that truly defines an "Evil Dead" movie is that it needs to be extreme in one way or another.

Let’s just be honest: being scared isn’t fun. At least, not for everyone. So entering Halloween — aka “spooky season” — can be pretty hard, especially when it comes to finding movies to watch. Well, it’s a good thing you’re here.
Because the thing is, Halloween movies are a core piece of celebrating the holiday. You get together with friends, you break into the candy early, turn off all the lights and get cozy for the night. But if you’re a big ol’ scaredy cat (like this writer is more than secure enough to admit she is), those nights are significantly harder.
So, we went ahead and rounded up 13 of the best Halloween movies that you’ll be guaranteed to still get a good, nightmare-free sleep after.

Lee Cronin’s brand new installment Evil Dead Rise just slashed its way onto Max over the weekend, but it’s not the only film in the Evil Dead saga that you can stream on Max right now.
In fact, All Five Films in the Evil Dead franchise are now streaming on Max, which makes Max – formerly HBO Max – the Only place you can stream the entire bloody saga!
The franchise of course includes…
The Evil Dead (1981) Evil Dead II (1987) Army of Darkness (1993) Evil Dead (2013) Evil Dead Rise (2023)
It all began with Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead, the original horror classic that introduced the world to Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) and the Deadites he would go on to spend his entire life battling. After being forced to massacre his friends in the woods, Campbell’s Ash returned for Evil Dead II in 1987, a sequel that brought horror-comedy insanity to the forefront.

The following contains major spoilers for Evil Dead (2013) and Evil Dead Rise (2023).
Of the many horror franchises, few are as creatively violent as The Evil Dead. Sam Raimi’s 1981 original garnered an Nc-17 rating for “substantial horror violence and gore” and Stephen King described the low-budget indie as “the most ferociously original horror film of the year.” The film follows Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell), his sister, and three friends as they travel to a cabin in the remote woods and accidentally summon demons with an incantation from the Book of the Dead.
In 2013, Fede Alvarez directed the fourth franchise installation, Evil Dead, a remake/sequel following Mia (Jane Levy), her brother, and three friends in a similarly doomed cabin. Ten years later, the Deadites have returned to the big screen with Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise which tells a stand-alone story about a similar Book of the Dead. Found...

There’s a kind of shaggy glory to Evil Dead: Sam Raimi’s demonic scary movie series spawned from the writer/director’s triumphant indie horror marvel from 1981. Starring childhood friend Bruce Campbell and shot in the Tennessee wilderness with next to no budget, the inaugural outing with Raimi’s Necronomicon (aka Book of the Dead) and its flesh-ripping Deadites — also known by the original film’s title, “The Evil Dead” — established a formula for four more films with immeasurable influence on skin-peeling, tendon-snapping, chainsaw-revving pop culture as we know it.
The first film sees final guy Ash Williams (Campbell), his sister Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss), his girlfriend Linda (Betsy Baker), and friends Scott (Richard DeManincor) and Shelly (Theresa Tilly) heading out for a stay at a remote cabin. Once there, a cursed book and tape summons a demonic presence that slowly begins to feast on the souls of the unlucky travelers one by one.

The Evil Dead franchise is a horror classic that has stood the test of time. From the early days of Sam Raimi’s low-budget gore-fest to the more recent adaptations, the franchise has maintained a level of quality and consistency that is rarely found in the horror genre. With all the films in the franchise being something special in their own right, it’s time to rank them in order of greatness. So grab your boomstick and chainsaw, and let’s take a look at every film in the Evil Dead franchise and see which one reigns supreme.
1. Evil Dead 2 (1987)
What can be said about Evil Dead 2 that hasn’t already been said? This film is a masterpiece of horror-comedy, and it’s still just as effective today as it was when it first came out in 1987. Sam Raimi and team were firing on all cylinders here; they...

This post contains spoilers for Lee Cronin's "Evil Dead Rise."
The "Evil Dead" franchise epitomized the cabin in the woods horror trope in visceral and uncompromising ways. When Lee Cronin decided to craft a fresh, equally demented installment to keep the franchise going, he shifted the setting to a cramped L.A. apartment where a family unit experience horrors beyond their imagination. Apart from this marked shift in focus, Cronin's latest installment puts women under the spotlight by letting them be as emotionally complex and frighteningly scary as possible, with a story that puts these characters directly in the heart of gory mayhem.
Cronin's decision to veer in a fresh direction leads to a gripping apartment horror with a family forced to tear one another apart. Although the film relies on established franchise tropes, including tapes that spell out demon-summoning incantations and standard Deadite behavior, "Evil Dead Rise" situates...

The Deadites are set to return to theaters this weekend with director Lee Cronin's gloriously unhinged "Evil Dead Rise." Visionary director Sam Raimi's twisted version of the undead bowled over unsuspecting audiences when the original "The Evil Dead" hit in 1981, ushering in a new wave of blood-soaked mayhem and low-budget terror. When Raimi first cracked open the pages of The Necronomicon (a.k.a. the Book of the Dead) in that first film, the overall tone and texture of his breakthrough debut was decidedly darker and grittier than the films that followed. When five innocent college kids accidentally unleash Hell itself at a remote cabin in the woods, the dark spirits found in "The Evil Dead" are only concerned with wreaking as much havoc as possible. If you're Ash (Bruce Campbell), the reality of watching your girlfriend Linda (Betsy Baker) and your buddies transform into possessed soul eaters...

There’s no franchise like the Evil Dead franchise. Four quality entries that each, in their own way, have managed to push the boundaries of originality, black comedy, fear and fun. Not to mention buckets, troths and otherwise gnarly amounts of blood and gore. That’s the Evil Dead Way, after all.
With Evil Dead Rise cheese grating its way into theaters this week, let’s take a look at five of the scariest moments from the Evil Dead franchise so far. Come to sweet Henrietta…
The Tree Scenes – The Evil Dead + Evil Dead 2013
We can converse about whether or not the controversial scene from 1981’s The Evil Dead should exist (Sam Raimi even later said he regretted it) but the fact is that it does and it is horrifying. I included both the original and remake scene here because A) I’m a coward and this is a cop out,...

Evil Dead Rise (read our review right Here) will be introducing fans of the Evil Dead franchise to sisters Beth and Ellie, played by Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland, when the film reaches theatres on April 21st. In the build-up to the release of the film, Sutherland has taken to social media to share an image of her and Sullivan hanging out with another Evil Dead franchise heroine: Jane Levy from Evil Dead 2013.
It should be noted that Levy does not appear in Evil Dead Rise, this is just a fun picture of the stars of different entries in a franchise hanging out together:

Evil Dead franchise creator Sam Raimi handpicked Lee Cronin to write and direct a new Evil Dead movie after seeing his feature directorial debut The Hole in the Ground.

The Evil Dead franchise has long been a female-forward horror franchise, even with Bruce Campbell typically leading the charge. Ellen Sandweiss, Betsy Baker and Theresa Tilly from Sam Raimi’s original The Evil Dead have been collectively dubbed “The Ladies of The Evil Dead,” and 2013’s remake of course gave us a new franchise icon in Jane Levy’s Mia.
This year’s new movie Evil Dead Rise brings Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan into the mix as the latest ladies of The Evil Dead, and Sutherland just shared a pretty awesome photo over on Twitter this past weekend. The idea of a remake of "The Evil Dead" seemed like a form of blasphemy at one point, but horror hounds appear to love Fede Álvarez's remake/reboot/reimagining/etc, the 2013 film "Evil Dead". Me? I'm somewhere in the middle. I love the nasty, gory, overwhelmingly bleak atmosphere Álvarez and company created for the film. However, a lot of the dialogue is so painfully bad that it takes me out of the movie on more than one occasion. I'm not saying I expected Shakespearian prose from "Evil Dead," but I know they could've done a lot better. No matter — the film is still plenty visceral and scary,...

To credit Fede Álvarez’s Evil Dead as the motivating force behind “Revenge of the Remakes” wouldn’t be an audacious claim. By golden template standards for reanimating beloved horror franchises, it remains a remarkable exemplification alongside titans like Maniac or The Blob. As an underworldly standalone feature, it’s one of the fiercest, scare-you-senseless releases since its April 2013 premiere. I still remember every howl, sunken gasp, and pure release of elation during my midnight showtime—”That’S How You Execute A Remake,” dominating lobby chatter and ride home discussions. From there, reactionary adventures into do-over culture solidified as the investigative analysis you’ve been reading on Bloody Disgusting month after month.

Aziz Sliti went next by suggesting Ben Barnes and Lizzy Caplan before later going all “Succession” by adding, “Sarah Snook and Kieran Culkin as a couple is too good to be true.” Lil Tony is looking at Daniel Craig as a contender, while smurty11 is looking for the third season to cast Oh, Allison Williams, Michael Shannon,...

March of 2023 will be seen as one for the record books with the best showing for three long-running franchises, setting things up for a month that’s often known more as a buffer before the bigger summer releases. This April will only be slightly different, since it starts with one of the first major family films of the year, considering that “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” was released last December. Read on for Gold Derby’s April 2023 box office preview.

There are certain success stories in the history of cinema that serve to inspire filmmakers for generations to come. Existing right alongside Kevin Smith's low-budget comedy "Clerks" and Robert Rodriguez's "El Mariachi," there is Sam Raimi's all-time horror classic "The Evil Dead," which was made on a shoestring budget with his pals, producer Rob Tapert and star Bruce Campbell, in the early '80s. It ultimately found success despite its lack of resources, having earned more than $29 million in ticket sales to date. Not bad for a movie that was made for a mere $375,000.

Sam Raimi is the twisted mastermind behind the Evil Dead movies that shook the horror movie genre forever. They’re frequently put on repeat around the Halloween season, occasionally making their way back to the silver screen for the holiday. Evil Dead fans ranked their favorite movies via Letterboxd, so here’s a look at how they’re listed from worst to best.
4. ‘Evil Dead’ (2013) Jane Levy as Mia | TriStar Pictures
Letterboxd Rating: 3.4/5
Fede Álvarez’s Evil Dead took the movies in its own direction in 2013. It continues a familiar plot reminiscent of the franchise’s early installments, but it instills a new protagonist who heads to a remote cabin with her friends for entirely different reasons. Jane Levy takes on the lead role of Mia, who is hoping to gain control over her sobriety. There, they encounter the Book of the Dead, which awakens demons bent on possessing them one by one.

When the TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead came to an end, star Bruce Campbell said he was formally retiring from the role of Evil Dead franchise hero Ash, a character he had played in three films and three seasons of television over the course of forty years. There is a loophole, though: Campbell is still willing to provide the voice of the character, which is how we got his voicework on Evil Dead: The Game, and why there’s now hope that Ash vs. Evil Dead may be revived as an animated series. But franchise creator Sam Raimi is also still holding on to hope that he’ll get to direct Campbell as Ash in another movie.
Three years ago, Raimi said, “I would love to direct a new Evil Dead movie… but I’d really like to do it with Bruce. And he says he’s retired the character.

The Evil Dead franchise has taken a bit of a nothing’s-off-the-table approach in recent years, with Fede Alvarez’s remake in 2013 being followed by the return of the original franchise in the Starz series “Ash vs. Evil Dead.” There was a time when we felt the remake probably meant no more Ash Williams in the franchise, but thankfully that didn’t end up being the case.
Up next, the franchise returns to theaters with Evil Dead Rise on April 21, 2023, a brand new movie that once again introduces brand new characters and a fresh new storyline. Does the existence of Evil Dead Rise mean we’ll never see the return of Mia (Jane Levy) from Fede Alvarez’s movie? According to creator/producer Sam Raimi, everything is still on the table.

“Make sure there’s scary Deadites, and use the book.”
When Lee Cronin assumed writing/directing duties for Evil Dead Rise, those were Sam Raimi’s requests. Of course, there were other ingredients for the fifth installment of The Evil Dead horror franchise—launched in 1981 by director Raimi, producer Rob Tapert, and Bruce Campbell—such as blood, gore, chainsaws, and boomsticks.
But then the Irish filmmaker and lifelong Evil Dead fan reveals to us he had his own mission: “To bring you in, wind you up, and then punch you in the face for an hour.”
Handpicked by Raimi, who was impressed by Cronin’s short film “Ghost Train” and first feature, The Hole in the Ground, the director began filming Evil Dead Rise in New Zealand in June 2021. With all three serving as producers, Tapert joined the shoot on the ground while Raimi and Campbell supported his vision from afar.

“Honestly, it’s one of those things where it’s like people say don’t meet your heroes, well that’s wrong with David Strathairn,” Pullen laughed. “I mean, I’ve been such a huge fan of his for so long and, you know, when I became a professional actor would I respect most of his choices as an actor, like I think he’s always choosing super interesting projects and he’s really an artist, so when I met him...

In an exclusive interview with uInterview, Weston discussed what it was like working with Levy and Strathairn.
“They’re both wonderful actors,” Weston said. “With David it was the first time for [working with him] but it’s my third film with [director] Angus [MacLachlan] so there was definitely common ground and great communication. And I’m a congenial person, I get along with everybody, and I’d say that about David Strathairn and so we brought that to the table. We were the two senior citizens on the film so we...

In the film A Little Prayer, viewers follow Bill (David Strathairn) as he balances wanting to protect his daughter-in-law (Jane Levy) from his son’s (Will Pullen) suspected unfaithfulness. As writer and director Angus Maclachlan said, “It’s a story of a family and secrets in the family and fidelity and choices.”
In an exclusive interview with uInterview at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, Maclachlan revealed what the casting process was like.
“Oh, it’s incredibly important,” he said. “I’m an actor myself so I really love actors and really respect them and really honor what they do and the people that I ended up getting were like a dream cast. I mean they were just a dream cast, both in their performances but also in their esprit de corps because it’s never easy. I mean we had, you know, David Strathairn who is a...

In the film A Little Prayer, views follow Tammy (Jane Levy) and David (Will Pullen), and David’s parents, Bill (David Strathairn) and Venida (Celia Weston). In an exclusive interview with uInterview, Levy discussed what it was like working with Strathairn.
“I’m a huge fan,” she said. “It’s a real privilege to work with someone like David Strathairn. What’s so exciting about Sundance is we’re here honoring independent films. This is a really small production, we didn’t have many days to prep or shoot and so David and I just had...

Sony Pictures Classics has made many wise investments at the Sundance Film Festival over the years. Its 2022 acquisition, “Living,” just nabbed Oscar nominations for Best Actor, Bill Nighy, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Other recent Sundance titles propelled to the Oscars by the studio include “The Father” (2020), “Call Me By Your Name” (2017), “Whiplash” (2014) and “An Education” (2009). Amy Adams’ very first career bid came for “Junebug,” which the distributor picked up from Park City in 2005. That film’s writer, Angus MacLachlan, is the director of “A Little Prayer,” one of Sony Pictures Classics’ 2023 festival purchases (the other being Audience Award winner “The Persian Version”).
Starring David Strathairn as Bill Brass, the movie is about a soft-spoken North Carolina family man who, per official synopsis, “tests the limits of patriarchal interference” after discovering that his son, David (Will Pullen), has been having an extramarital affair. In breach of Southern hospitality, which prescribes minding one’s own affairs,...
