Here's eleven of my favorite new rock tunes for your early spring listening pleasure. Enjoy the melodic sunshine, people.
"Eskimo Kiss" The Kooks Junk of the Heart (Astralwerks)
Not sure why my fellow critics insist on dropping the "sounds like The Strokes" tag on these Brits. And some scribes have whined they aren't "edgy" enough. So what. I hear more of The Kinks and The La's as reference points. And to me, that's much better company if you love more pop in your rock. Case in point, the infectious ear candy of "Eskimo Kiss," my pick hit from their latest long player (LP). Currently on tour in the U.S. of A.
"Stay At Home" Yellow Ostrich Strange Land (Barsuk)
Speaking of the Strokes...I hear more than a hint of their aggro-guitar pop rock in this very fine track from former Wisconsinite/current New Yorker Alex Schaaf. His newly...

Ever wondered what would have happened if Kings of Leon decided not to make arena anthems and stuck to the blues-rock format that was infinitely better? If so, then Southampton rockers Band of Skulls may be your new favourite band as they release their second album, Sweet Sour. Full of fuzzy basslines, heavily distorted guitar and a huge slab of groove, they help to make up the British rock class of 2012 slowly taking over the world.
In the three years since their debut album, the band have found themselves touring all over the globe, to increasingly larger crowds. In spite of this, there is no sense that the band have lost their roots, with the songs having a delicate balance between dance-floor fillers and nostalgic lighters in the air moments. The combination and contrast of lead singers Russell Marsden and Emma Richardson allows this balance to occur,...

Here's a rundown of some standout videos and tracks for the day, from Black Keys, St. Vincent, Niki & the Dove and Band of Skulls. Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys hasn't just been hard at work on Dr. John's next album. He and Patrick Carney have been rocking audiences in support of latest "El Camino" in the last few months, with the below footage culled from a raucous set in New York. I find the setting disagreeable -- Webster Hall isn't even near one of the best venues in the city -- but the lights do a lot of doctoring...

Coachella Music Festival released their official 2012 lineup in a tweet on Monday afternoon, and the headliners for each day are The Black Keys, Radiohead and Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg as the grand finale.
This year, the festival is experimenting with hosting the same exact lineup twice in a row over two weekends, which means that the dates for the festival are April 13-15 and April 20-22.
Fans who didn't snag a pre-sale ticket last year may be repeatedly rebuffed right now as Coachella.com is crushed under the weight of its own success. But since the festival is technically twice as long this year, we're guessing that tickets will be a bit easier to obtain than last year, when tickets sold out exactly one week after the lineup was announced.
For now, enjoy the official 2012 lineup in an easily searchable format, or scroll down for a look at the official lineup poster.

After shocking fans months ago with the news that its desert festival will span two weekends in 2012, Coachella confirmed with its lineup announcement Monday (January 9) that it is going big this year. Posted to the fest's Facebook page, the roster boasts Radiohead, The Black Keys and Dr. Dre with Snoop Dogg.
In response to last year's event selling out — a week after the 2011 lineup was announced — the festival is experimenting with featuring the same artists for two consecutive three-day weekends: April 13-15 and April 20-22.

While Miley Cyrus isn't the first person to come to mind when making a wishlist of artists to cover Bob Dylan songs, we have to admit -- we're really looking forward to this album.
Miley and a host of her contemporaries have joined forces to pay tribute to both Bob Dylan and Amnesty International with a new cover album. The record, titled "Chimes of Freedom," features a huge variety of artists -- from Pete Seeger to Ke$ha.
"Glee" star Darren Criss even makes a contribution to the four-disc compilation, covering New Morning with his brother, Chuck Criss, and his band the Freelance Whales. The jam-packed album, which "salutes Amnesty International's 50th anniversary and life-saving human rights work," is set for a January 24 release. Check out the list of songs and artists below to see which classic your favorite singer will be covering.

Rumors have been circling the web regarding the highly anticipated Bonnaroo music festival for about a month, and now the official line-up has been released.
In January, someone with too much time on their hands threw together a fake line-up for the Manchester, Tn festival including the likes of U2, Lil' Wayne, The Strokes and Drake.
There are more than a few common threads (Lil' Wayne! Girl Talk! Florence + The Machine!) between the fake and real line-ups, but we are bummed that Drake didn't make the cut. Eminem taking top billing was a nice surprise, though.
Check out the full list of performers below, which also includes Arcade Fire, fresh off their Grammy win.
The festival is slated for June 9-12, 2011 and tickets will be available starting Feb. 19 and 12 noon on bonnaroo.com.

Arcade Fire

On Tuesday (February 15), organizers announced the lineup for the 2011 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, set for June 9-12 in Manchester, Tennessee. And, boy, it's going to be interesting to hear the purists' take on this year's bill.

Unlike earlier, decidedly crunchy editions of the fest, the 2011 lineup is topped by two of the hugest hip-hop acts in the business — Eminem and Lil Wayne — along with newly crowned Grammy champs Arcade Fire and the Black Keys. Other acts on the bill include Mumford & Sons, the Strokes, the Decemberists, Florence and the Machine, Big Boi, Wiz Khalifa and Robyn.
Of course, there are still some nods to Bonnaroo's roots: Fest vets Widespread Panic return once again, as do My Morning Jacket and the String Cheese Incident.

The first track on the soundtrack for The Dilemma begs, “Don’t do it / Don’t you break my heart.” Unfortunately, the titular dilemma in The Dilemma revolves around cheating and infidelity. Sounds like heartbreak may be on the horizon despite the funky pleading from The Band that kick off this collection. As Ronny (Vince Vaughn) and Nick (Kevin James) navigate the treacherous waters of what you do when you catch your best friend’s wife cheating on him, they do so to a rocking soundtrack packed with heavy hitters from Band of Skulls to Kiss to Wolfmother.

The Dilemma soundtrack. Increasingly it seems a line has been drawn when it comes to compiling soundtrack albums for studio comedy movies. A sexual line. Yes, that’s right. What we might pejoratively bracket as chick flicks or rom-coms – When in Rome or Valentine’s Day, say – have their accompanying records filled out with bubble bath ballads and light-footed pop numbers. Meanwhile, more man-centric movies – Hot Tub Time Machine, Due Date and yes, The Dilemma – invariably deliver a selection of riff-tastic Cro-Magnon rock. The sounds of a bloke drifting towards middle-age like the Mary Celeste drifting the ocean waves, fretting about that spare tyre bobbing round his midriff, the shiny ballroom floor on his crown getting bigger every day, and as a last resort, a last desperate grope in the direction of his fading youth, taking himself out for a drive and listening to something Really Loud on his car stereo.

With the unwanted controversy over the use of the word “gay” in Ron Howard’s “The Dilemma,” the film could use all the good news it can get.
Thankfully, the rock-heavy soundtrack should partly mitigate any of the film’s shortcomings as gritty blues-rock bands Wolfmother and The Black Keys lead a soundtrack destined to be played in a biker bar at three in the morning.
Brooklyn quartet The Hold Steady contribute new song “Just Saying” to the film, though the album’s previously released stuff is hardly throwaway material. You can probably guess what part of the movie Black Keys’ “She’s Long Gone” will be playing over, while nearly 35 years later, Kiss’s “Detroit Rock City” remains a quintessential badass classic rock staple.
Overall, the soundtrack veers heavily into bar-rock territory, with groups like The Fratellis and Band of Skulls contributing their respective fist-pumpers. We can imagine Kevin James in a bar,...

The Going the Distance soundtrack. Let’s say you were going to make a movie, with your ultimate aspiration being that you would get super-rich and start getting invites to the kind of parties where they serve sushi off the toned derrieres of underwear models and dwarves scurry round with complimentary bowls of cocaine strapped to their skulls. Now, to facilitate the opening of the door onto this world of Olympian decadence, from what type of film would you choose to make? Science fiction blockbuster? Action extravaganza? Humble rom com?
Hey, don’t roll your eyes at the latter suggestion. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again till I’m blue in the face; while romantic comedies might not generate the supernovas of buzz that the perceived big boys do, they offer the genuine advantages of relatively low production costs and big fat profit margins, meaning...

Activision and the "Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock" team paced themselves publicizing the full set list of more than 90 tracks that's slated to appear in the game, but they've put it all out there as of this week, and before you even make it to Soundgarden's full "Telephantasm" album that's coming bundled in the first shipment of units, you'll have a long list of core game tunes to thrash through including The Hives' "Tick Tick Boom" and multiple Megadeth and Rush numbers.
