HBO has released an intense trailer for their upcoming three-part miniseries called Gunpowder, which tells the story of British activist Guy Fawkes. The series follows Fawkes and his team of provincial English Catholics as they plan to blow up the House of Lords and kill King James I in the early 17th century.
This miniseries looks really good and it has a solid cast that includes Kit Harington, Peter Mullan, Mark Gatiss, Derek Riddell and Liv Tyler.
Even though Guy Fawkes has become the main name associated with the Gunpowder plot, thanks to V for Vendetta, he actually played a minor role in it. The main guy who led the charge was Robert Catesby, and that is who Harington is playing. For some additional information on the Gunpowder treason plot Wikipedia says:

Joanna took her stand against circuses holding animals captive by getting an elaborate tiger body paint job ... and posing in front of the Houses of Parliament in London. Politicians over there are considering a bill to ban wild animal circuses. We're pretty sure the Members of Parliament will absolutely take notice ... of Joanna.

As his new film, Mascots, arrives, the genius behind Spinal Tap talks about sitting in the House of Lords – and dying for five minutes
Christopher Guest jets into London to unveil his new film about mascots. He says he’s fascinated by mascots and by what makes them tick. Showbusiness, he explains, involves recognition, celebrity, that whole narcissistic trip, whereas the mascot can dance on the sidelines disguised as a lion or storm the pitch as a monkey and nobody knows who the hell they are. “So they’re performing,” he says. “But they’re hidden.” The more he talks about mascots, the more wistful he becomes.
It is the fate of comedians to be forever cast as the clown, as though there’s little distinction between their work and their life. In person, Guest is an exacting, cerebral, 68-year-old film-maker. He’s lively company; he has a great, bone-dry wit.

Leading up to their second wedding anniversary in August, the couple had spent a large part of the past couple months apart due to their hectic work schedules.

YouTube is reportedly hiring an executive who has a significant political pedigree. Oona King, a member of Britain’s House of Lords, has announced her decision to take a leave of absence from her position in order to become the global director of diversity at YouTube.
While YouTube has not yet confirmed the hire of King, the politician discussed her career move during an event at the House of Commons. She called YouTube “the future of broadcasting” and said her new position is “an amazing opportunity to go where the most exciting ideas are coming from.”
King is no small-time politician. The daughter of an African-American father and a Jewish mother, she became just the second black woman to join Parliament when she was elected in 1997. She has since served in several positions as a member of the left-leaning Labour party.

The Legend Of Tarzan Gallery 1 of 32

It’s easy to understand why Warner Bros. was tempted to make The Legend of Tarzan. Franchise-friendly, FX-heavy, and blockbuster-ready, it also boasts one of those illustrious brand names that everyone knows and Hollywood has yet to capitalize upon. To the studio, especially back when the project was first green-lit, in the wake of Alice in Wonderland and with the juggernaut Harry Potter franchise winding down, Tarzan must have seemed like a no-brainer, at once familiar enough to draw audiences and broad enough to allow a new team of filmmakers to provide a contemporary take on an old mythos.
And yet, times have changed. In this decade of #OscarsSoWhite and Black Lives Matter, audiences are challenging the movie industry to do better when it comes to smartly discussing race and – more prominently in the case of Tarzan – thoroughly banishing the white-savior...

The Red Shoes | Palestine in 1947 | Online trolls | Doonesbury | Train delays | Mixed-up seasons
The Red Shoes is not about “a ballerina forced to choose between ambition and love” (Report, 6 April). It’s about a ballerina forced to choose between being the protege of a controlling ballet impresario who considers marriage a betrayal of art, and her own artistic and personal freedom. She doesn’t cease to dance when she marries, though she is forced to give up the stardom bestowed on her by Lermontov. Her downfall comes when she gives up her independence to return to the source of her early fame.

• Karl Sabbagh (Letters, 11 April) may be right to correct Giles Fraser’s account of the Sykes-Picot agreement, but in asserting that Palestine did not gain its independence he ignores the fact that Egypt and Jordan occupied Gaza and the West Bank in 1947 when these areas...

The secret to not living in a state of perpetual regret is, of course, to make the right choice in the first place. Witness Jimmy scrambling to correct his eminently preventable error, one that saw Kim banished to document processing in the basement of Hhm, and you have all the object lesson you need in playing by the rules over taking the path of least resistance. “You’re like an alcoholic who can’t admit he has a problem,” a deeply un-self-aware Chuck, so brittle from an imagined disease that his every motion crackles and crunches thanks to the foil he wears, chides his errant brother. He’s right, though. Jimmy does what he wants and then tries to paper over the cracks. To him, life really is one big episode of Let’s Make a Deal.

We chat to the cast of Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong’s university-set comedy drama, Fresh Meat, which returns tonight on Channel 4…
Fresh Meat’s characters have been doomed from day one. It’s right there in the title. Ushering in his new seminar group in the first episode, the studiously irreverent Professor Shales calls, “Send in the fresh meat for the grinder”.
It might be the line of a try-hard iconoclast (Shales’ next move is the classic shock-Doc act of binning their essays. Take that, convention), but the words tell a truth never far from Fresh Meat’s cringe comedy. That, as the hapless products of an industrial process that leaves them indebted and scrabbling for ever-distant opportunity, today’s graduates are being shafted.
“There’s compassion for students in the writing,” says Joe Thomas, who plays indie kid undergrad Kingsley. “Particularly in this series,...

Former President Jimmy Carter says that if he had to choose between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, he’d vote for Trump because the billionaire businessman is more “malleable,” according to CBS News. “I think I would choose Trump,” Carter told the British Parliament on Wednesday, “which may surprise some of you, but the reason is Trump has proven already that he’s completely malleable. I don’t think he has any fixed opinions that he would really go to the White House and fight for.” Carter was speaking to the House of Lords about his campaign against Guinea worm...

Chicago – Different isn’t bad and might be great, but you’d better have an irrefutable reason to change what was never broken. Campy being the only word to accurately convey this alternate-reality version of Sherlock Holmes with an original script, writer Greg Kramer and director Andrew Shaver try too hard to be different without ever figuring out why.

Ex-Channel 4 chairman Luke Johnson has called on the BBC to stop showing popular programming like EastEnders and The Voice UK.
Johnson waded into the ongoing licence fee debate while speaking to the House of Lords communication committee, saying that giving up some popular shows to competitors wouldn't "diminish the BBC at all".
"I do struggle with the idea that the BBC commissions and broadcasts programmes that would clearly be shown by unsubsidised rivals," Johnson argued (via The Guardian).
"If you keep the licence fee, which I'm not sure in the medium or long term is a good idea, it should reduce its output at least to programmes that others aren't making and commissioning.
"They broadcast The Voice in a prime slot because they want to gain as broad a support as possible for its future. The idea that no one else would show that is a joke, it's ludicrous,...

Angelina Jolie made an appearance at the House of Lords in London on Tuesday to speak to the select committee on sexual violence in conflict. The actress shared evidence of the ongoing issues, stating, "For over 10 years I've been visiting the field and meeting with families and survivors of sexual violence who felt for so long that their voices simply didn't matter. They weren't heard and they carried a great shame." She then went on to recount specific stories of meeting young women and children who had been the victims of sexual violence. You can watch a clip of her heartbreaking testimony below.

'Lord Montagu' documentary. 'Lord Montagu' documentary: Anti-gay persecution victim became successful entrepreneur and National Motor Museum founder On first blush, the life of a Lord of the Realm, a Peer to the English monarchy, a child born with an actual silver spoon in his mouth and an ancient estate to inherit, would seem wholly irrelevant to a commoner such as myself – and an American, no less. Yet the life of the man once known as Little Lord Montagu, as captured in director Luke Korem's titular documentary, Lord Montagu, is one that fascinates both for its storied historical context and for the way the Little Lord lived it. Which required a good deal of bravery, ingenuity, and affection for the “common people” and the things we love. At this writing, Edward Douglas-Scott-Montagu, 3rd Baron Montagu of Beaulieu, is 88 years old. The film about his Lordship begins when he is only two years old,...

Robert Evans: The Kid Is Alright

I interviewed legendary Hollywood producer Robert Evans in 2002 for Venice Magazine, in conjunction with the release of the documentary "The Kid Stays in the Picture," adapted from his iconic autobiography and audiobook. Our chat took place at Woodland, Evans' storied estate in Beverly Hills, in his equally famous screening room, which mysteriously burned down a couple years later. Evans was still physically frail, having recently survived a series of strokes, but his mind, his wit and his charm were sharp as ever, with near total recall for people, places and stories. Many, many stories. Here are a few of them.
It’s a widely-held belief that the years 1967-76 represent the “golden age” of American cinema. Just look at a few of these titles: Rosemary’s Baby,...

According to the stage, Lloyd Webber said in a speech It is extremely worrying that, to go to a stage school or theatre college, you now have to pay such an enormous amount of money that it is being left to foundations and others to fill the funding gap with scholarships. It concerns me how many people may be slipping through the gap.'...

Chariots of Fire producer reveals how Greenpeace activists brought him back to filmmaking.
When David Puttnam stepped back from filmmaking in his mid-50s, he cited the examples of some of the legendary filmmakers he had met while boss of Columbia Pictures - directors like Stanley Kramer, John Huston, Fred Zinnemann and George Stevens who felt embittered at their loss of influence late in their careers.
“What I realised…is what angry men they were. When I made the decision to be out [of the film business] at 55, it was because I realised that the last 15 years of their lives, they were not happy guys,” the Chariots Of Fire producer said in a 2008 interview.
